If you've never had Serbian food before, you have to check Tenen out. It's like a mix between Mediterranean food like Greek food with German food. There are a good variety of pork dishes but I ordered a steak. It was bacon wrapped and within the steak was oozing cheese. The steak was seasoned perfectly. It was accompanied by a tomato based sauce that complimented the slightly salty steak very well. It also came with a basket of fried potatoes and a side of cucumbers and tomatoes dipped slightly in vinegar and salt. The service was attentive and on point giving recommendations based on my taste pallette. The dining area was small, maybe enough for a total of 30 people dining max at one time. The ambiance was very quiet, enough to talk and converse without having to raise your voice. Lots of wall art depicting either famous people or places from Serbia. I noticed several Nikola Tesla pictures. A destination to totally visit and wisk you away to the food joys of Serbia. I am always excited to try places that serve Balkan food and I do wish we had more Balkan restaurants here in the Northwest. 4 of us grabbed dinner at Tenen on our way home from visiting Vancouver. Now, I will say that I'm a bit of a Serbian food snob and I am not that easy to please. In addition, I'm a vegetarian, which makes Balkan restaurants a bit challenging. With that caveat, I will say that I overall enjoyed my dinner and will be back for sure. The portions are very generous, and all of us walked away happy and full. I had the ushtipci (dough fritters), which were puffy and airy and wonderful. They came with kaymak (traditional Serbian clotted cream - type spread), which tasted a bit industrial (it reminded me of the kaymak I have in fridge, which I buy at the store) and the urnebes (a spicy Serbian dip), which did not have much flavor (which is strange because it's supposed to be spicy and bursting with flavor). The Shopska salad was fresh and delicious, just how it's supposed to taste; however, the roasted red pepper salad, which I was very excited to see on the menu, also tasted industrial, like something out of a store-bought jar. I was hoping I'd see gibanica or proja on the menu, but they don't seem to have them. My husband had the meat platter and loved it, and our friends had the goulash and the chicken roulade, which they raved about. Our order came with homemade bread (pogaca), which was simply heavenly and possibly my favorite part of the meal! We did have krempita for dessert, which was small and underwhelming. Overall, I wouldn't say it was a perfect meal and it's certainly not the best Serbian food I've ever had, but it's a good introduction to the Balkan cuisine for people who've never had it, and a really nostalgic treat for those of us who miss home. I will be back, and I look forward to trying their breakfast menu, and potentially the breaded cheese next. Came here on a Thursday evening. Reservations need to be made beforehand as the restaurant space is small and seating is limited. They do get quite busy! The parking lot is small but nearby street parking is free and available. The interior is well decorated with European style photos and artifacts hung up on the wall. It has a very warm and homey feel. I had the cabbage rolls which were absolutely amazing and was a nice warm meal on a cold day. Luckily, Tenen took away my disappointment and Monday blues. Foods seemed authentic Eastern European cuisine as the customers and owner were conversing in their own language when I opened the restaurant door and I was blown away by their cultural decor the minute I stepped inside. Ambiance was cozy, decorated with many historical references to their local culture. Service was decent though the foods took a while; thankfully, it was worth the wait. For me, this place was a true hidden gem as I must have driven by Chevron at least a dozen times and had never known of its existence but Tenen is right next to Chevron! What did I order? A traditional dish that I can not properly enunciate -- Karadjordjeva Schnitzel, which was a filling cheesy dish that I would def recommend as a comfort food. As recommended by most yelpers, i plan to return one day with more foodie friends to order their popular meat platter. Time for another update. This time my friends and I (3 people total) tried the MVP platter. This one costs more than the BBQ platter for 3 ($110 vs ~$90 as of the time of writing) so we were wondering if the platter is worth it. The quality of the food selection goes up with the MVP. We got a giant meat "burrito" that was full of cheese. There are now BBQ chicken chunks, as well as 2 salads (coleslaw, and Greek) instead of 1. Was it worth it? Yes. I wouldn't get it every time, but it is worth the extra few bucks if one wants something different. My friends and I were barely able to polish off the platter, and all of us are big eaters. In theory, the MVP is for 4 people. One thing worth mentioning - I think management changed since the last time I was here. I didn't recognize any of the staff, and a few things were different, such as the additional of placemats. read more

Tenen Meat Platter for 2: loads of meat with a side of bread and slaw. The slaw was a bit tart but it paired well with the heavy meats. The meats were cooked well. Flavourful and tender. You can taste the smokiness of the fire. 10/10 Goulash: the both kept hot throughout the meal. The meat was so tender and flavourful. Melt in your mouth. The flavour of the broth was delicious. This place is a hidden neighborhood gem. We have been wanting to come here for a while. But somehow just never did until yesterday (Friday dinner time). We came at 5:30pm and were seated immediately. The decoration here makes you feel like you're in a Serbian grandma's place. We ordered a BBQ platter for one, a goulash, and a Cockta (Balkan cola). I have never been to eastern Europe. The only time I've had goulash before was at the Vancouver Christmas Market. So I wasn't sure what to expect. Then the food came.. Cockta 7/10 It's very different from our typical coke. It's a lot more floral, more acidic and not as sweet. It's not bad, just different. Goulash 10/10 The pork is so tender it melts in your mouth. The sauce is fatty but so full of flavour. It blew my mind how good this is. BBQ platter 8/10 This gives a good variety of different meat and sausages. The sausages were a bit too salty for me, but the homemade coleslaw certainly helped with that. All in all it's a good dish to try Balkan BBQ if it's your first time. The portion is huge and the two of us couldn't even finish half of this. We took them home and will have another 2-4 meals out of this. For ~$70 (including 18% tips), this is extremely good value. The restaurant has started doing lunch special and daily special on the bulletin board. The menu changed. The people are still the same but the service is definitely not as great as before. In the past the server would come and talk to their customer. I noticed a few things off lately: 1) I tried ordering on Uber Eats for lunch and they missed the mark on turning on Uber Eat app to allow order. I called UberEat wondering why I was not able to place the order and was told that they didn't turn it on. So I ordered from somewhere else. 2) I came here for dinner with a friend from out of town, I was charged for an extra order of complimentary bread. There were three of us and they only gave us two bread and when we asked for one extra one we were charged $2.95. Our total bill came to $80.95 and they nickels and dimed on bread which is quit shocking. If the extra order is not complementary then let us know. Or if they want to save on bread take the two pieces of bread and cut it into smaller pieces. Food was not as tasty as before but the three stars is mostly on the service. Service was not good. We ran out of water in the middle of the meal and no one came to refill our water. Plates were not remove until we asked for our bill. We were not the only table being ignored. This is one of those hole-in-the-wall places that I definitely knew about, but was hesitant to visit?? I grew up seeing it in my neighbourhood but never visited because I found it intimidating for some reason LOL A bunch of people we know said it was a great spot for meat in the last couple of years and my boyfriend and I finally decided to go on a walk and check it out and we were blown away!! They are an Eastern-European restaurant so you'll find a variety of dishes including Balkan food, cabbage rolls, schnitzel, lamb/veal, pastas, tons of different bbq meats! Huge portions packed with big flavours! I'm not too familiar with European cuisine and am not a big fan of cabbage rolls, but we were not disappointed! I love the pillowy bread and the meat (under the bread) was grilled and well seasoned. I am always worried that meats can be gamey, but this was not at all. I have been wanting to try the food here ever since a few friends raved about the meat platter. I like meat but not overly so, but the aroma is definitely mouth watering. I had ordered the meat platter to go and it filled my car with such delicious scent. It also drove my neighbor's dog with longing when we bumped into each other outside our doors. Besides the meat platter which has so much meat that I think it can actually feed two small eaters, I also ordered the cabbage rolls and a roasted red pepper and eggplant dip. The dishes also came with coleslaw and two cheese dips and rolls. The meat platter is a good deal for meat lovers. I like the skewered meat which are tender. I do not see bacon but there is a pork belly which is unfortunately very tough and dry that I cannot really cut through it. The sausage and chevapi are ok. The meat is served with roasted chopped potatoes and coleslaw. The disappointing dish is the cabbage roll. I love cabbage rolls and their version is way too salty. The cabbage rolls are huge with lots of meat filling. The sides of rice and mashed potatoes looked to be swimming in the container. And they are bland which is a good thing since the cabbage rolls are so salty. I will not order this in future. The rolls are nice and soft, perfect with the dips. One is a cheese dip and the other is a bit spicy. The rolls also go well with the roasted red pepper and eggplant dip. I am glad I get to try this place but it is not something I dream about. Picked this place for a weekday dinner date, and it was seated to max capacity on a Monday around 6:30! Loved the cozy vibe with all the cultural decor -- even in the washroom! Got the veal soup to start and loved it! Very generous meat portions inside the soup. Not the biggest fan of the biscuit that came along, but that was just us. My partner's meat platter for 1 ($23) was perfect for him. The crispy bacon was oh so good -- we only wished there were more than the 1 piece. Also really liked the potato wedges. I'd seen a recipe for cevapi and that gave me a craving for the famous Balkan dish which I'd not had for years. It was a staple food in Sarajevo when I was there, so I decided to try Tenen. It's a cozy little restaurant with mementos on the walls and a very friendly host. She recommended the veal ragout soup which was a nice light broth with veal and vegetables.. very good as an appetizer. I ordered the plate of 5 cevapi (the plate of 10, in hindsight, would have been impossible!). They had nicely toasted the somun bread on the grill and the meat was nicely seasoned. Slightly tougher than I remember but delicious. It also came with kajmak, a heavy sour cream/butter type of condiment but I really missed having a pile of onions and ajvar roasted pepper sauce on the side. It also came with a very big bowl of pickled cabbage and some nice fries. I just couldn't finish it all due to the portions. I'll be glad to come again and to try their burek read more

We have noticed this restaurant behind the gas station on royal oak/rumble and we decided to try it. We ordered take out - smoked pork shoulder (forgot to snap a photo) and pork stuffed wirh cheese. My first reaction was - wow, that is a lot of food . It tasted really good, but I was only able to eat about 1/3 before I was full. Stuffed pork still tasted really good the next day, even cold, cut into thin slices on a piece of bread. Food came with fried potatoes, coleslaw (vinegar style - very good) and bread. There are lots of choices on the menu and we already picked something else we want to try. We are definitely going back. Had to leave another review as the service we experienced recently was so amazing. By our own fault, we neglected to think of making a reservation until about a second before we arrived. We walked in and saw that the restaurant had a large party in their main dining room. Thinking we had to go home, our party of 6 (including a hangry toddler!) was pleasantly surprised when the servers offered to seat us in the back patio area. It turned out to be a very nice and cozy covered tent area with propane heaters. The servers thoughtfully set up the heaters for us, turned on the fairy lights and we ended up having the entire back patio area to ourselves! The only minor negative fact is that the food can be quite salty. We went through many waters, but the service and amazing flavours make up for the rise in my blood pressure. read more

Decided I wanted a decent amount of protein after my hike. So I searched for a nearby place to have a meal. Ordered the platter for one. I think it is a lot of food for one person. Service time was very reasonable. I enjoyed the chicken portion of the plate very much. The fries were delicious - the crunch and the softness on the inside. The rest were a-okay. I think I read into the positive comments too much. Overall, if you have a sensitive taste for salt, would not recommend - everything seemed a bit of an overkill on salt. The coleslaw was drenched in a sour sauce, to a point that it was overpowering everything, and I had to order a drink to compensate for it - but it didn't work out. Ambient - I sat inside, and it was the afternoon, the place was not well lit at all. For atmosphere, some places are just naturally darker - but here it seemed like it was just...hard to see. I was here for a family dinner last night, and it was a unique experience for all of us. None of us ever tried Slavic food, but I've only tried Russian dish few times. My family and I came here around 6:40, and the tables were full of customers waiting for their food. We were kind of annoyed that food took around 40 minutes or longer to come. Regardless of the wait times, it was so worth waiting though. Somehow we didn't even get bread until we almost finished eating. We had Meat Platter (2people $38.95), Carbonara ($16.95) and Zlatiborski Goulash ($17.95) and they were all yummy. When it comes to Meat Platter, it was so big that none of us could finish it. Pork chops, chicken and sausage were fresh and tasty. It was interesting how this dish came with plain and red pepper butter. I personally think it was good enough without butter; and the butter was home made and tasty. Carbonara was perfect. Pasta was nicely cooked, and it was tasty. Goulash had big chunks of meat and some veggies along with rice and mashed potatoes. Goulash was SO good. Home made breads were VERY impressive as well. Service was attentive and friendly. We noticed the owner interacting to our next table, and some customers were Russians and Serbians. Because some customers were Russians and Serbians this restaurant knows how to cook Eastern European food well. Just that I felt very thirsty after eating and had to drink so much water. Get the meat platter! This is probably the best thing Tenen's menu. The platter comes with chicken shish kebab, chicken thigh (so tender and juicy), bacon, sausage, chevapi (minced grilled meat), fries and coleslaw (tangier than other coleslaws, which I liked). My second favorite is their cabbage rolls, but I think they need to tone down the salt a little bit. It's just a personal preference, so to each their own. Authentic and delicious traditional East European dishes loaded with ingredients and flavours! I've never tried food from the Balkan region. It reminded me of Greek food but not quite. They are really good with their meat. We had chicken, pork and lamb. The portion was big and the pricing was fair. The soup of the day was made of chicken, carrots, green peas and potatoes. The flavour was homey and satisfying. The soup wasn't watery but full of contents. The pork schnitzel was this gigantic log which is crispy on the outside and filled with pork tenderloin and cheese. Cutting through it and seeing the cheese flowing out of it was amusing. The roasted potatoes were well seasoned and the pickled cabbage was refreshing and gave you a break from the cheesy meat taste. My favourite out of all in this dinner was the roasted lamb. They were so tender and moist. It fell right off the bone. The creamy sauce compliments the meat! Loved the rice and roasted vegetables on the dish. The flatbread was yummy and dry the way it is. It goes well with any sauce or simply on its own. The baklava dessert was traditional and unique. I found it a tad too sweet but I could taste the grind walnut and appreciate the honey within it. This little cozy restaurant has a good vibe and ambience of East Europe. The server was very sweet and helped packing the leftover. However, when I opened the leftover the next day, I noticed that half of the 1.5 leftover flatbread was not packed. It's been a long time since I went to Tenen and surprisingly the pricing hasn't changed much. They have shown up frequently on Groupon, however, and with their clever pricing, the $20-towards-lunch adds up to either a cheap yet huge-portioned lunch for one person, or approximately a half-priced lunch for two persons. They do have nearly-$20 main dishes so going solo with the groupon is fine (and it's one groupon per table) but most items are $16.95. Overall the food is comfort homestyle food. Actually on the mediocre side except the portion per plate is probably good enough for up to two persons depending on what you get and your appetite. Tenen does feed you well and isn't skimpy on portions. Even though they have the usual fillers of bread and potatoes, they aren't stingy with the meat. Gourmet Burger ($16.95) 10 oz. patty with bacon and cheese mixed in -Looks like the bread used is a pita sliced in half and pan fried in drippings from the burger. -The seared-on-the-outside patty itself is really heavy and filling, but it's also really kind of rubbery-firm from maybe having ground the meat too finely. It has the feel of an overdone burger patty. -The burger has some cheese, bacon, and chili mixed in for a slight bit of bite to the flavour. -The plate has fries, coleslaw, and a scoop of rich chili-flavoured spreading cheese which you can certainly slather inside the burger. The patty is big enough for this burger to count as two regular burgers that might each cost you $10-$12 elsewhere. It's a very plain burger (bread and patty) but the plate is not skimpy on portions even if you discount the complimentary thick pita that comes to the table. Cabbage Rolls (16.95) seasoned ground beef and pork with rice, stuffed in sauerkraut leaves, served with mashed potato -Looks like a small portion at just two rolls, but the amount of rice in the filling is token, so you're getting basically two burgers worth of meat here. If you're still not feeling full enough you can work in the pita bread that comes to the table. -Overall tasted fine, nothing superlative here. The slight sourness of the sauerkraut really helps with how filling this plate is. OK food with bonus points for generous portions -- something that is steadily harder to find nowadays, especially with newer restaurants. read more

Came to this restaurant for my wife's monthly meeting with her God sister. We like to go try different foods. We had made a reservation at 730pm about two weeks ahead of time. Good thing we did as it seems the restaurant was booked for late evening Parties and while we were seated a couple of parties of walk in customers were turned away. I thought it was absolutely delicious albeit a very rich/heavy dish. But I did enjoy it very much. My wife ordered the goulash and the pork was so tender and delicious as well. It was served with rice and mashed potatoes. I ordered the tenen BBQ platter for one. It was a delightfully filled plate of meat served with fries and coslaw. The meat was all delicious and cooked perfectly. Though I did find it to be a tad salty but not in a bad way. But best to eat with the provided bread or fries. Service is where it lacked, the food imo was excellent and very delicious. Service was ok while there were no guests but us. I think our waitress was helping on the back for the big rush of the evening patrons. Which only got worse for us when they did arrive as she was very busy serving them and neglected us. We waited a very long time before we could get her attention to pack away food we court finish then weren't able to get a hold of her when we wanted our bill. I think the owner a guy saw us and attended to us. I don't lay blame cuz I know it's hard to run a restaurant especially a very small one like this one. But there is room for improvement. There are those that might throw a hissy fit etc... I'm pretty laid back but I'm writing this to warn those that try this place that service might not be what you're expecting. Looking for homemade fresh Balkan cuisine for my partner and Tenen nailed it. The vibe, the music and whole ambience brings you back to the beautiful country of Croatia. Let's talk food . The bread (rolls) and homemade butter can bring a tear to your eye. the bbq meat platter was spot on. Salty. Crispy. Juicy. The staff were amazing. We were looking for a little something different to eat and I stumbled upon Tenen in my search. It's an Eastern Europe restaurant specializing in Balkan cuisine; mainly Serbian dishes but there seems to be some Russian influence too. We made reservations for a Saturday evening (7:00pm) and luckily we did because it was busy. It got even busier at night because there was a live band that started playing at 9:15pm. No idea if this is a weekend thing but it was fun and lively. Everyone seemed to know each other and were singing along to all the songs. The inside is small but warm and inviting. There's room for about 35 people. Staff were friendly and our waitress was patient and sweet. The menu is split into appetizers, salads, pasta, entrees, Balkan style BBQ and desserts. There's also a Tuesday special for 10 chevapi ($11.95) along with a few daily specials to round things out. - Veal ragout soup ($6.95) - hearty veal and vegetable soup served with corn bread. It also came with two pieces of their homemade bread (lepina). Hearty flavour and the bread had a satisfying, chewy bite. - Tenen meat platter ($38.95 for 2 people) - chevapi, chicken shish kebab, pork cutlet, chicken thigh, bacon and sausage. It also came with roasted potatoes, coleslaw, lepina, kaymak (cheese) and urnebes (cheese and hot chili peppers). The chevapi, chicken thigh and sausage were all tender and bursting with flavour. Unfortunately, the pork cutlet was dry and overcooked. Same for the bacon and chicken shish kebab, although to a lesser extent. Still, it's a massive platter and can easily feed three people. - Leskovački uštipci ($16.95) - this was one of their specials. Beef and pork meat with melted cheese topped with red onion, over roasted potatoes and coleslaw. The meat was fantastic. The texture was spot on but the taste reminded me of seafood for some reason. Delicious! Definitely would come back to try their karadjordjeva snicla (their house speciality), which was sold out, along with a few other Balkan specialties. read more

My friends and I came here last night for dinner and this place is awesome. The staff is great and so helpful. The restaurant is small and I liked that the walls full of old pictures and items from Balkan region. We had the traditional meze for two. Great presentation and loved the corn bread. For the entrees we ordered chicken roulade, cabbage rolls and Tenen meat platter for one. Also gave us home made bread. Everything was super good. I want to come back to try other things on the menu. I've had home cooked and authentic Eastern European foods before - this ain't it and ain't for me. considering the location, rent and decor - I was expecting more on the home cooked side and less on the tourist gouging price points. Friendly family run service made for an enjoyable brunch despite the long wait for food. We came while there was a big lunch party that took up most of the room. Decor is pleasant, lots of things and photos on the wall that will be a welcome sight if you've never been to Europe (the eastern part) I came with my family so I tried a few things from the menu including: Marinated Chicken Thigh - this was moist and tender ( albeit heavy on the cheese). Not the best chicken I've had but still decent. The chicken is served with a small handful of fries and coleslaw salad. Note the coleslaw is not your American heavy on the mayo version. Gourmet Burger - this was basically a 10oz patty. They say burger but there is no bun. It's 10oz of meat, with a hearty dose of bacon and cheese mixed in. My brother had this and he said it was good but 10 oz of anything is a lot. Chicken Roulade - I ordered this for my mom but looking back, I should have got this instead. It was the best dish of the three. Chicken breast stuffed with spinach and cheese, then wrapped in crispy bacon. Oh my, this was a winner. I will definitely return, next time to try the Tenen Meat Platter because that dish looked amazing. read more

All I can say is WOW! The food, the service and ambience were great!! We had the veal ragout soup and shared the Tenen meat platter. Although you could order the platter for two (about $38), we're glad we split one, more than enough for two. Can't wait to got back and try something else on the menu...I highly recommend Tenen :) read more

It's a small cozy restaurant which specializes Eastern European cuisine and walls are adorned with old photos of people and European scenery plus some Balkan weavery. For meat loving people , I recommend this place especially the Tenen meat plate either good for 1 or 2 people. The chicken roulade was popular and I enjoyed it. For someone who hasn't been to this place, the cute menu will give you info about the history and the people who started this restaurant and I think it was informative. The servings are in big portion so we have lots of take home food and service is good as well. read more
