This was my first time at the Mill. We loved the rustic warehouse look. We were seated on the second floor. It was getting quite hot up there; no air circulating. I saw ductwork in the rafters; maybe the AC was not working? We went for Mother's Day brunch. It was probably not their best culinary showing, buffets usually aren't. I was not a fan of the Cheesy Hash Brown and Egg Casserole. It was the texture, not so much the taste. The French toast was a good mixture of cinnamon and sugar, but only if you could find the pieces that weren't dried out. I liked the bacon: salty, well cooked and crunchy. The flank steak was tender and tasty. Prepared to a perfect medium and marinaded in a nice meaty broth. The chicken in the Lemon Chicken Piccata was overcooked, dry, resulting in a tough chew. I did enjoy the Mushroom Strudel. A moist dish with a tasty gravy drizzle. I would've liked to try the bread pudding with caramel sauce, but they apparently ran out. The other desserts were ok. They looked like they were hastily cut into slices and served on the thinnest of paper plates. I could tell those running the place were also a bit frustrated; they made their feelings rather vocal, easy for all seated to hear (that's like a major rule of restauranting: the issues in the back should never be exposed in the front, where the customers can hear.) All in all, not a good first impression. But, I am willing to return and have a normal sit-down meal. Then I can see how they do. I have been told that their service and food is usually pretty solid. Old Fred Mill never disappoints. Great food, superb service and friendly ambiance. Four of us for dinner. Place was modestly busy. We had meat loaf, pot roast and two had the pork chop. Meat loaf was plate licking good. Came with mashed potatoes and a vegetable medley. Pot roast was cooked perfectly. Came with mashed potatoes, veggies and a tasty gravy. Pork chops were moist, tender and huge, and topped with an apricot sauce. Meal was very good. Hot wheat bread loaf and side salads started the experience. Highly recommend without any reservations. This had to be the worst culinary bait and switch I've ever seen. Here's what was on the menu: Canadian Walleye filet, lightly dusted with in-house seasoned flour, pan seared, and topped with a lemon compound butter, served with wild rice pilaf and vegetable medley. Here's what I received: 3 small pieces of fried fish (could have been anything and no lemon butter, 'mashed potatoes' that were both lumpy and the consistency of glue (inedible) and a plastic cup of Cole slaw (vegetable medley? The food is pretty good it has some good flavors but the bread that they give you is really bland. The food portions are also pretty small. The service is ok. Some of the waiters seem like they hate their job. Some seem really joyful, but there's this one waiter who doesn't even know the menu, and she just didn't ask if I wanted a drink. She also forgot that my meal gets a salad. The atmosphere is very old fashion and has a pretty good vibe. The chicken was really dry and there was a giant hair in my pasta!!! read more

Unassuming yet quite delightful is how I'd describe this place. The menu may not look overtly impressive, but the food was well cooked and most enjoyable. Within easy walking distance of the Iron Amethyst Inn, this was an ideal location to relax and eat well cooked fair that pleased the palette and soothed the soul. We were served on both nights by Aliyah who made us feel very welcome with her prompt service and happy demeanor. The prices felt reasonable and at no time did we feel anything except happy we'd picked the Inn to eat at. If you're in the area I feel you can't go far wrong eating here. I can't speak for the food because we stopped by for a drink on the way to dinner and the door was open not known that they don't open for an hour and a half. They were nice to let us come in and order drinks while they were closed. The place is an old mill with a history of a great steam train wreck in front of the place. The place is old and intact with the wood floors, ceilings and part of the pulley system in the roof. I don't know when it was converted to bar, restaurant and gift shop but it still has nice charm with all the antiques and props of an old mill. We had all old fashions which we all agreed were average but it was a nice atmosphere. read more

We wanted to try your restaurant for my birthday, we have heard good things about it and wanted to try it out. We were very disappointed with the Prime Rib ; it was not at all we expected, it was cold and very thin, there was no way it cam out Med/Rare it was well done. To pay $33.00 for it, it was ridicules. When we made the reservation, we were asked if this was a special occasion, my husband put down yes (Birthday), however our server never said a word about being a Birthday meal. She was in a hurry to leave, as we saw her leaving when we were leaving. Usually when we have gone out for a Birthday celebration, we are treated to a dessert to share when asked if this is a Birthday (dont ask if you are not going to do something for thr guest). This place is a gem, the building is full of history and feels cozy, the menu isn't extensive but it has enough so you're not snoozing at the APT, we shared an appetizer (pecan crusted Brie) and it was delicious and perfectly sized for 2 people, for the main course we got peppercorn sirloin steak for me and lemon caper chicken piccata for my date, both were cooked to perfection and were paired with a yummy corn & clam bisque, our server was nice but we felt like it was her first week there, I'd have given the place if they weren't out of every drink I asked for, all in all it's an amazing place. read more

Holiday with the family, this turned out to be an excellent choice. This was a buffet style, there was plenty of hot food, which was mostly traditional, with vegetarian option being- the mushroom streudel! Kudos to Chef Angel! It's what I'll remember most about this holiday. Incredibly tasty, great texture, buttery, outta this world. I later called to compliment the chef, and to inquire whether I could get more of this stuff to take home, and yes I could! And I did. 25 pieces (rolled about 1 1/2" in diameter × about 2" long,) more mushroom than strudel.. I bought a whole pan of this @ $75. , (and worth it!) frozen to take & bake, the pan was maybe 14" × 11" (best guess,) and my party guests were definitely impressed. For being a buffet, wait staff was attentive and on point. They even brought a dessert tray around after dinner. I don't know what is the name of the chocolate dessert, but it was really really good, rich and not overly sweet or gooey. The ambiance- this place was built mid 1800s, the decor is comprised of some nice antiques, some items curated from auctions and estate sales. It's really something, how well it was put together. Whomever insulted the interior decorating, saying it needed updating, TOTALLY missed the point, as it's like stepping back in time. From the finished wood cooler, to the low drafting table hostess desk, the Hoosier cabinets, the bar, large mirrors behind the bar dating way back, it's she appropriate class. In a large glass case, there are even a couple of machines from the milling itself. (There is an upstairs to the dining areas, but we didn't make it up the stairs.) Nancy was really nice, bubbling with pride and the story of the place. Also to note, other items are for sale: there's a good-sized rack of very assorted jams, butters, relishes, and the like, (did I see mango jalapeno?) and a rack of lovely winter scarves; that's as far as I got. They are open most holidays, and it's certainly best to call ahead for reservations.(And mushroom streudel is more readily available a day or 2 before a holiday!) It's so worth the drive, maybe 25 minutes? from west Madison. (Taking Hwy 14 West, off of Hwy 12.) We're looking forward to checking the place out during off holiday time. Enjoy! read more

Came here for lunch the Saturday before Easter. I'm not sure if it was the weather or the fact that people were saving their appetites for Easter, but there was only one other table in the entire restaurant at 12:30p. I expected a bit more decor in the dining portion of the restaurant - the walls were pretty much bare outside of a couple of quilts. All of the tables and chairs were antique and sort-of mismatched. The gift shop was really cute, as was the upstairs. They had it all set up for Easter brunch, over 500 people reserved is what our waitress told us, and it looked really nice. Our waitress was lovely; took the time to offer us some historical info about the building as well as a dinner menu. She was quick to get us drinks and take our orders. She checked in on us often as well. I had the special; ham and swiss with a dijon sauce on rye bread. I opted for the harvest salad as my side and was very happy I did. I'm not completely sure of what was in it but it was a perfect blend of ingredients, all tossed in balsamic vinaigrette. Very fresh. The rest of our party had clam chowder, the turkey and cranberry sandwich, and stuffed grilled cheese. There were no leftovers, everyone loved what they ordered. Both the ham and turkey sandwiches had a very generous portion of thinly sliced meat. I heard the fries were a little on the soggy side but that didn't stop them from eating them. The prices were very fair considering the portion size. I can't wait to come back for dinner sometime. read more

Even though The Old Feed Mill is 2 hours from my house, my wife and I always head to the restaurant when we're remotely close to Mazomanie. We go there specifically for one delicious dish: the mushroom strudel. YUM! Quite frankly, the mushroom strudel doesn't sound that good on paper and it doesn't actually look all that good, but it is heavenly. On our last visit, my wife dared to venture a bit on the menu and ordered the chicken pot pie (under the promise that I'd share my mushroom strudel with her.) The pot pie was also wonderful and arrived in a tasty bread bowl that was a treat in itself. I finished off dinner with a chocolate torte cake that arrived with ice cream and whip cream and was easily big enough for two. The old mill has wonderful ambiance because it's in an actual old mill (duh!) as opposed to a new building with old decorations. As a railroad fan, it doesn't hurt that the restaurant is right next to railroad tracks, but unfortunately the tracks aren't used much so I haven't seen a train while dining. As it was fall with our last visit, the restaurant was tastefully decorated with harvest decorations which is way better than all the gory, death-themed decorations that most restaurants decorate with near Halloween. Aside from the top-notch food and ambiance, the staff is always super friendly and we almost always end-up staying late just to talk to them. In a way, I'm glad The Old Feed Mill isn't closer to my home because I'd end-up eating there every week! read more

Truly 4.5 stars. My mother would go nuts for this place, and, truth be told, I was really impressed too. Somehow they combined a lovely old restored mill setting with well executed food and good service, all the more unexpectedly because it is in Middle of Nowhere, Wisconsin. But then again, you could never have a place like this in a city or suburbs. I am a harsh judge of the quaint-country aesthetic, so trust me when I say that this mill restaurant is a top-notch example. It was endlessly charming and handsome, not at all cutesy or cheap. Everything fit together; whoever did their decorating should get an award. The stone walls and wooden beams of the mill speak for themselves. Added to that foundation were elements such as tree-branch curtain rods, a subtle floral-pattern stencil all around the walls near the ceiling, and tiny vases of fresh flowers on each table. I even noticed the handsome knit placemats and the napkins which looked like burlap but felt softer than t-shirt cotton. Little touches like those add up to a very convincingly genuine experience. The cuisine is aptly described as country classics with a slight twist. For example, the regular menu features apple cider roasted chicken, pork loin, pot roast, macaroni and cheese, etc., while the specials board that evening listed salmon anisette and Jamaican-style steak and shrimp. This is the kind of restaurant that I wished existed in my small hometown, so that when I visit the family, we can all share a nice meal which satisfies both simple and sophisticated palates. Heck, EVERY small town should have a place like The Old Feed Mill, but that would be impossible because this place is pretty special. How was the food? Startlingly good. There was warm, wheaty bread to start. The pre-dinner salad was a medium-sized bowl of quality greens with a few cherry tomatoes, red onions, and cucumbers. I loved the garlic-peppercorn dressing, and another little clue that these people are operating at a higher level was the choice of about a dozen dressings: it wasn't your typical backwoods offering of french, ranch, and italian. I chose the meatloaf because it was jazzed up with italian sausage, but the bacon binding the perimeter of each piece was a surprise. My plate contained two inch-thick palm-sized slabs, not to mention the mound of mashed potatoes and pile of vegetables. The latter two were decent, but the meatloaf was the star of that little play. It would have been great on its own, but there was a dijon mustard glaze to push it that extra step from tasty to delicious. Dessert was bread pudding--the densest slab of the stuff that I have ever encountered. The piece that they gave me was about 6" x 3" x 1" and must have weighed almost two pounds. I was done after four bites...but of course I kept the rest for later. Not the best but quite enjoyable, and the companion caramel sauce was divine. Value is incredible here. Entree was $15.95 and the monster bread pudding $3.95. That's bread, salad, entree and sides, dessert, and a full meal's worth of leftovers for twenty bucks. Just another feather in the Old Feed Mill's cap. If you are headed, like we were, to Spring Green for the American Players Theater, good luck getting a table at the one decent restaurant in town. Instead, try the Old Feed Mill about two-thirds of the distance between Madison and Spring Green. You will not rue the choice, believe me. NOTE: If you are approaching from the east on US 14, Cramer Street is the first right as you crest the hill coming into town. The street signs are small and worn in some cases, and you will miss it if your attention has been suddenly drawn to the speed trap at the top of the hill. read more

How have I went this long without knowing about this place???? I live in Middleton and a nice meal means heading into Madison. I wanted something in a local small town. Luckily I found this beautiful place in Mazomanie on a nice humid summer evening. My wife and I pulled up to the beautiful restored mill. As soon as we got of our car we could hear the bluegrass band playing out on the front porch. It was then that I knew I would like this place. We went inside and were promptly seated. We started off with some homemade bread and Clam Chowder Soup. Both servings were wonderful. I ordered the battered fish, boy was it battered oh-so perfectly. I had a Wisconsin Amber to pair with the fish. My wife had the pot roast dinner and that pot roast could put your 90 year old grandmother to shame. It was literally perfect. The Garlic Mashed Potatoes were great as well, I had to add a little butter to mine. My wife through they were perfect though. All in all a great atmosphere and delicious food. read more

We stopped by for lunch. Beautiful old building. Found out it is not the original structure, but after a fire it was rebuilt in 1899. Yeah it's old. 12 x12 x40 wood beams in excellent condition. I had the side salad with blue cheese dressing. Very fresh. I originally wanted the Cesar sal with smoked trout, but was informed that was a typo and the trout is out of season. :( The special of the day sounded good, but I went with my old standby the Reuben. Thick chunks of corned beef, with tangy sour kraut and thousand island on this absolutely lovely soft rye, grilled to perfection. Best Ruben I have had in a long time. Our group of seven (one infant) had the following: Meatloaf which might have been OK if not slathered with some gastly brown gravy. Undercooked garlic mashed potatoes with little or no garlic. A dish of cod and shrimp in a cheddar cheese glop - barely edible. A mushroom strudel that was edible, and mac and cheese that was OK. But fer crying out loud, it's Wisconsin! Shouldn't the mac and cheese be outstanding?! We are annual visitors to Spring Green and always looking for new restaurants to try. We can now cross this one off the list. Came here for Thanksgiving. We were the last seating of the day. It was buffet style. We went to get our Thanksgiving dinner. On the buffet line was a pulled pork, sliced turkey, a beef stew dish, and a mushroom pastry for vegetarians. I had the pastry and turkey. Also on the line we're mashed potatoes and dressing and gravy. Except here's what made me angry---someone in a red top and red hair, an employee, rushed in ahead of me. She had a to-go container, and proceeded to take the remainder of the dressing and gravy, and left none for us--the last customers. We asked the food runner, and were informed there was no more dressing or gravy left. Those are key Thanksgiving meal items, and she should not have taken for herself and not left any for customers. Then at the end, there were no desserts left other than a bread pudding that did not look appetizing. I was extremely disappointed with my holiday meal because they ran out of so many items. Then we got the bill and the total was $60 for two. Which wouldn't seem bad if we got a full meal. We left a good tip as it was a holiday and our waitress had to work the holiday. It wasn't until I was home I realized tip was supposed to be included. Something our young waitress (purposefully?) neglected to tell us. What we were able to get tasted good, just extremely disappointed the employees took last of food before us customers were fed. read more

We have eaten here many times before so I'm not sure what's going on but it's not good. Took our daughter and her husband out for their 1st anniversary dinner a few weeks back. Started out by sitting in a chair that the legs were so loose in that I refused to sit in it. Went to grab a chair from an adjoining table and the entire back lifted off in my hands. The third chair I grabbed I used but it was also questionable. Now I appreciate the re-purposing of old chairs in a business, but a little glue and some wood clamps go a long way. Now onto the meal; 3 out of 4 of us experienced cold, tasteless dinners, and not only was one of them cold but the fish had been over cooked to start with. The garlic mashed potato's had not a trace of garlic, and the gravy that was spread over my meatloaf I feel very certain can from a can. Considering the price points all unacceptable. Normally I am one that is very vocal when I am served sub-par food or given poor service (in which in this case the service was excellent), but my daughter is not and I didn't want to spoil her evening even more. Also, I would write this off to just a bad night, but then we spoke to friends that basically had the same experience (less the chair issues) the following evening. Doubt we will return. read more

Our waitress was not the most attentive in spite of my family and I being one of only five tables in the whole restaurant, and the walls were actually pretty bare, not to mention the dollar amount on the menu!' Wisconsin Mac & Cheese and the Beer Cheese Soup were great, though! Something we do as a family is we try each others' meals. Meatloaf, ribs, and the mac & cheese were ordered. The ribs were not very good and neither was the meatloaf. Also my original order, Pecan Crusted Whitefish, was canceled because they were out of whitefish! I personally do not recommend this restaurant, unless you got the mac and cheese with beer cheese soup (and can put up with inattentive waitstaff.) read more

Well this is a short review as we never got to eat here. When we walked in about 5:30pm, the hostess asked us if we had reservations. When we said no, she was very curt and abrupt explaining they were very busy and we would have to wait at least an hour and maybe we could get seated. Peering around the corner, we noticed several empty tables though they may have been set for upcoming reservations. Perhaps it was our attire?? We were both in nice blue jeans and a polo shirt for me and a nice blouse for my wife. At any rate, we left and went to Mt Horeb for a wonderful dinner at Bistro 101. Eat: Artichoke fritters -- perfectly fried chunks of battered artichoke hearts, paired with a ranch-like dipping sauce. How can one go wrong? And although I didn't taste them myself, I heard "oohs" and "ahhs" coming from those who ordered the bacon-wrapped filet and the New Zealand rack of lamb. Very easy to drive past, but for dessert, not worth bypassing! Beautiful old building, love they reused such an amazing structure. The bread they talk so highly about, that they ground the flour for, is decent. It's a really heavy bread. We order lamb, that was the special. Lamb was ok, but everything else with it was unflavored and ruined the dish. Veggies tasted like they weren't fresh and were a weird combo. Smashed potatoes were dry and needed mucho butter. I've read the desserts have been rated highly via Gourmet Magazine. So we split an Apple Dumpling served with a smooth thick cinnamon ice cream. IT WAS DELISH, totally saved the meal. It was a whole peeled, cored, poached apple wrapped in a thick dough, bathing in a buttery caramel sauce. I can say this was probably one of the best apple desserts I've had. Food was just so-so, mainly cooking, not ingredients, and yet an interesting menu. Pecan crusted Brie. Sounds great, and was ok - center just not melted at all. Salads were good and they make the blue cheese dressing themselves. I had the cider-marinated chicken. This time the inside was cooked nicely but the coating was like wet flour. Shame, because the flavor was pretty good. Wine list had cheap wines at cheap prices - no values and nothing interesting. Bar vibe was unfriendly. We ordered the smoked pork and the mushroom strudel. We were so pleased and thankful for our meal. The flavors were delightful and truly homemade. This place is so adorable... not technically "my style" but it's very cute, country, cozy. The owners are so nice and love to discuss the place which is great. They have a shop up front, upstairs they have banquet rooms... all decorated in that crafty country vibe with lots of handmade quilts and dried flowers. The building is beautiful. They will even ground up flour for you - wheat or rye $1 a pound. I got both and made my first batch of rye with it. Yum. Dinner was pretty good. I had a wonderful handmade wheat pasta which was excellent. I love to make pasta and this was a good one. I couldn't decide on sauce so I asked for 1/2 marinara 1/2 cream - definately would go with all marinara next time. The cream was ok, I didn't finish that side but the marina was full of oven roasted tomatoes. Yum. Veggies were fresh and tasty as well. Everyone else in our group loved their dishes (sorry I'm bad at remembering the meat dishes they got). My husband would only rate it 4 stars though for whatever meat he got. He thinks we can get better back home but overall loved the experience. Desserts all look great and are handmade. We went with the cheesecake brownie which could not be eaten by 4 people but it was outstanding. Worth the drive out into the country. My wife and I frequent this place a lot. We live in Mazo and really this is your only food option. I always get the Pot Roast and have loved it (mostly. A few bad batches with mostly fat). The last time we went in it was a horrible experience. No one seated us for a good 15 minutes. Once we were finally given a table it took another 15 to 20 minutes before the waitress came to ask us if we would like something to drink. After ordering our drinks, it took another 15 minutes for the them to arrive. I was ready to walk out but my wife wanted to wait. We had nothing at home to cook so we sat....and waited. The food came and it was good but that horrible situation with the wait staff was insane. I should mention that the restaurant was not even close to being full. Other patrons were getting their drink orders placed and their food to them before we even got a glass of ice water. It was as though we were invisible. I still tipped but really wanted to stick it to that lady. Sigh. She can have her tip and I'll give the Internet a tip too. Don't plan on competent wait staff. read more

What's not to love about the Old Feed Mill. The setting is absolutely beautiful. This stunning 100 year old + feed mill is the perfect set up for a quaint, and lovely dinner/lunch. The bar includes all of the Wisconsin staples: Brandy Old Fashioned's, ice cream drinks, local beers and a great selection of wines (many local). I have dined on Friday night, Saturday night and for Sunday brunch. Each meal did not disappoint! They serve Friday night fish fry, and for only $13.99 you get 2 huge pieces of cod, a potato, coleslaw and all you can eat rye bread at the table. I cannot say enough about the warm bread that you get before your meal! For only $3 more you can make your fish meal all you can eat! The breading on the fish is flaky and the fish is so very tender! One of the best fish frys I have ever been to for sure! On Saturday night, they have a Prime Rib special. You can get a queen or king cut. Both sizes are enormous and oh so tender! For a few dollars more you can add on sauteed mushroom and onions, which I did! It came with super fresh vegetables, choice of potato and soup or salad. All of the soups are made from scratch and the salads are a very nice mix of romaine and spring greens. My husband ordered the Lemon Caper Chicken Picatta which was super moist and flavorful. Some of our other favorites include the Mill Burger, Cashew Crusted Pork Loin, Mac and Cheese (this is a HUGE portion), Mushroom Strudel, and Parmesan Crusted Salmon. You cannot miss their Sunday brunch! I have paid A LOT more for brunches that don't hold a candle to this one. The dessert bar is enormous and all are made in house. The lemon poppy seed cheesecake was to die for! Other items on the brunch included: prime rib, cod, mac and cheese, 3-4 salad choices, roasted potatoes, fresh vegetables, garlic mashed potatoes, bacon, eggs, french toast, and cider roasted chicken. For the price, this brunch is a hidden gem for sure! Nancy and Dan the owners are super nice and very inviting and all of the servers we have had were friendly, knowledgeable, and polite. It has been over 2-3 years since I've been here, so this review is with a bit of faded memory. It has been a favorite rest stop for my husband and inlaws for years any time they traveled from their home in Milwaukee to The American Player's Theater and eventually I had the chance to give this place a shot. Wonderful food, beautiful decor, and a nice little gift shop. I always ordered the turkey club. The place does have some good looking vegetarian items, I don't know if they would/ could modify for vegan. I wasn't a vegan at the time to try so I don't have this information. Very recommended, especially to those traveling across the state to the Theater (which I also gave a 5 star rating)! read more

Stppped in for lunch. This was our second time going to this great little restaurant located in a historic flour mill building. My wife and I had pot roast--one of the restaurant's signature dinners. It was accompanied by mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes and the meat was super tender in a delicious beef gravy. We had an excellent bread pudding for dessert; also a house specialty. Most likely one of the best Lemon Caper Chicken Frittata entrees I have been served. The chicken breasts were breaded and pan fried golden to perfection! The lemon cream sauce was a perfect match. The side of sautéed vegetables were served with just the right amount of crunch. The Caesar dressing was to die for. Did I mention the wild rice blend? Great compliment to the presentation.
