We were staying down by the capital and the few restaurants that had been recommended we book on Friday night. We found Buck and Honey's on Yelp and were able to make reservations. We arrived at a Friday night at 6:15 PM as people are being turned away because they did not have reservations. We were seated quickly and our wonderful server, Melina, greeted us with a big smile and brought us waters. She was terrific and helped us choose the prime rib sliders with the mushroom risotto and I had the walleye with the cauliflower smash. He also ordered two side Caesar salads, which were fresh and delicious. Our service was excellent, and the food was delicious. We were very happy with our decision to come here. So much so that we made reservations for the next night as we were leaving the restaurant. The second night we had Samantha and she was equally a terrific server. Went on a Wednesday night, and it was considerably busy. Busy enough it took the server over twenty minutes to get us just our waters. However, once we got over that hump, the service was pretty good, especially as a few larger tables cleared out. I had the mahi mahi fish tacos. They were pretty good. Definitely larger than I was expecting. It has definitely been a long while since I've had mahi mahi, so it was a bit of an adjustment on my part. To be honest, I didn't really notice the jicama, and I'm sure you could mistake it for carrots or any other mild root vegetable. The chili lime vinaigrette was where it was at though. Wasn't too sweet, spicy, or sour. I thought it had a really nice balance of flavors. I chose the potato dippers as my side, and those were different. They're like a mix between a potato chip and steak fries. They didn't taste bad or anything, it was just for me, they were a bit to soft texturally to be considered a "fry." My fellow diners both had the Spring Buddha Bowls. They seemed to be enjoyed. There was a comment made about the peanut sauce having a bit more spicy kick than expected, but it seemed as it was a good contrast to the sweet cherry tomatoes and corn. Overall, a very nice restaurant whose acoustics seemed to be better than what they appeared to be, i.e. I was able to hear what the others at my table were saying. Buck and Honey's quickly became my favorite restaurant during my visit to Madison so much so that I went back a second time. Both visits were outstanding. My servers were incredibly friendly, attentive, and made each experience feel special. I started each meal with an apéritif, and I have to highlight the Smoked Crown Apple Old Fashioned. Hands down the best Old Fashioned I've ever had. Highly recommended! For dinner, I ordered the Chipotle Chicken Pasta with shrimp, and it was excellent -- flavorful, well-prepared, and memorable. Six of us dined here on Saturday night after a long at the nearby annual Beer Fest. It was a gametime decision to go as we wanted to shower at the hotel but we got a second wind and headed over to B&H. We are glad we did. The host staff and our waiter was very friendly. There were 3 of us that ordered the special which was the 16 oz Prime Rib (Med Rare of course!) My cousin had some apps and that Firecracker Shrimp was amazing! Unfortunately, there were 2 issues that night. First, was a few of us ordered a small side salad but only a few minutes later our entrees came. I wish it was spaced out better. Then my wife had Bone In Ribeye and ordered it Medium Rare. When she got it, it was more Medium. She asked our server to bring back another one Medium Rare this time and he said "Let me talk to my manager and I'll be back". Several minutes passed then his manager came with a new steak. I have had many fried pickles and these were hands down the best I have ever had. They were so fresh tasting and the tempura was so light. This was also my first experience with cheese churds since I am from VA. They were so good. Would defiantly order them again. The cod was light and had great flavor. One star for the service. The server was terrible. The waitress would just slide things on the table and leave without saying a word. She never offered to refill drinks and never asked us how our food was. That brings me to the food quality which I would rate two stars. Out of three orders, none of us thought or food was better than just okay. The rack of ribs that I ordered was subpar in flavor and the fish that was ordered was bland. First time at a Buck and Honeys - Came for brunch/lunch. Although their website says lunch only served M-F, their lunch menu is available on Saturday and Sunday. We were there for a leisurely time and told the server up front that we would be there awhile. Started off with drinks - I had there expresso martini which was delicious- came with a cute cat design on the foam - that is made from a machine. They have a QR code that you can send a design to and it will print it - pretty cool! We split the bacon wrap dated and the tuna on crispy rice cakes. The tuna was spicy with a slice of jalapeno on top but so good. The bacon was crispy and the goat cheese was creamy inside the date. I had the eggs Benedict special which was with filet, mushrooms and a spicy sauce. It came with melon and hashbrowns. I believe the bread was a ciabatta bun. It was good - but the eggs was almost semi hard and it was light on the steak. My friends had the fish tacos and a side salad - which they both very much enjoyed. Service was great - she didn't rush us and we never felt we overstayed our welcome. Would definitely come back when the patio is open! read more

We're in town a for a couple podcast live recording shows and decided to eat dinner near our hotel. This place looked neat. Upon entering, there were 4 groups of people in line ahead of us with more starting to line up behind us. I was nervous that there'd be a long wait. The hostess got us in right away. This place is massive with indoor seating and outdoor seating. They have a cool bar area too. You could feel how busy the place was but everyone seemed happy and on top of what they were doing. I ordered the veggie centricity and it was amazing! I would eat way more veggies if I could prepare them how they did. Cauliflower mashed, Brussel sprouts, additional cauliflower all so good. I love the fried polenta. My boyfriend liked his stuffed chicken. The sauce was really good. I've been here numerous times before but I'm posting because I couldn't find any photos of their brunch menu on Yelp. I was hoping to preview before I ordered. I got "The Cure" - everything bagel with a fried egg, very thick bacon, and pepper jack. The bacon is super thick, almost like pork belly (which i love). The sandwich was delicious but it's huge. Hashbrowns cooked to perfection. Mimosa flight was great as well (very sweet, like candy). My wife likes less sweetness in her drinks and thin crispy bacon, so our experiences were different. I went here for an anniversary dinner, and I would highly recommend it. I was drawn here because I saw the pictures online, and I will say in person, it does live up to the hype. The atmosphere is beautiful with a woodsy aesthetic. The best part is the little forest of trees behind the bar. Quite unique and gorgeous. Since we made a reservation and told them it was our anniversary, they put a little framed sign that says "Happy Anniversary" on our table. It's a small little touch that made us feel special. My spouse got an old fashioned to drink. The presentation was stunning and unexpected. It came in a small lantern. When you open it, smoke comes out and adds to the smoky notes of the drink. I absolutely loved this! The food is very good as well. The curds were decent as appetizers. I prefer something more crispy and beer battered, but that is my personal preference. The main courses were what blew me away. We got the prime rib, which was so tender and flavorful. They also have fresh daily vegetables and today it was garlicky green beans. Those were delish! We also got the miso cod. I was excited to try this because I don't see this item on too many menus around Wisconsin. It melted in my mouth. I should have ordered another portion. It was amazing. For dessert, we got a brownie with ice cream. Also very tasty. Service was also good. Our sever was very nice. It was very crowded, but she still tried to be attentive. Dinner here tonight with my mother. We got there early so no wait for a table. At first they seated us at a very tiny 2 top but they were gracious about moving us to a larger table. The food and service were excellent. I had fried cod and my mother had baked cod, we both preferred the fried. Parking is inadequate. We are both disabled and we had to park far away even though they were not yet busy. I don't like valet parking but maybe that would be useful here during busy hours. We will come back but there are other places just as good and easier to park. read more

I'm going to harp on price through this review, be forewarned. The quick one liner: The food is good, the portion sizes are so-so, but the prices speak to excellent quality or plentiful portions. Their baked French onion soup was very good; A satisfying amount of cheese, flavorful croutons, and good broth to onion ratio. I had Spanky's Meatloaf (stop it, you!) -- it was good, even if there wasn't enough of it. The garlic mashed potatoes were alright, but the mac and cheese felt like it was from a bag. Which, fine, but it was an $18 entree. Mrs. T got the Thai chicken bowl that had pickled cabbage and it wound up being unexpectedly spicy and the ingredients didn't work cohesively together and it was $22 for a miniscule portion of chicken and some peeled veggies (not even cooked peeled veggies) and more kale than should be in any bowl that isn't just a bowl of kale. All in all the food choices felt a bit pretentious, and while the quality occasionally measured up to it (that French onion soup was quite astounding) -- the prices don't reflect the level of quality / quantity. The wait staff was great, for what it's worth, I don't think we had a glass go dry and they checked in on us at good intervals without feeling pushy. As for the ambiance: It's an odd mix between dim lights for an intimate feel and a sports bar. Beautifully decorated and dimly lit (and expensive) but the TVs cheapened the feel somewhat. Time to update my review since my original review was from the middle of covid. We have now been here at least a dozen or so times in the last three and a half years. You can make reservations via opentable and it is a good idea to do so since it is alway crowded. In good weather their outdoor space is very nice with a good view of the river. Their Wisco Old Fashion is solid and a decent price. The food has been consistently very good. The apps such as the bacon wrapped dates and the firecracker shrimp are excellent. Their bowls, ahi tuna salad and hot comby sandwich are all tasty. The service overall has been good. The one thing since covid is their prices have soared (even more than most restaurants). Still a local favorite of ours especially in summer when we can sit out on their deck. read more

There was free music entertainment too on Friday night. This night was a miss for me as I had the blackened Mahi Mahi which really lacked the typical spicy taste. Also, the fish was overcooked and somewhat dry. However, the other food our group had was good . This is a hot spot in Madison and I'm glad we finally went. It's a lovely space, great ambience, beautiful behind the bar area. Our drinks were outstanding, the appetizers we excellent. The bacon wrapped dates were the best! Our server could have been a bit more attentive, as we wouldn't see her for long stretches of time, but I think she was still learning the job. A minor inconvenience. Really good waitress! I got the Veggie centricity and my companion got the Thai chicken bowl. Both were really good! The cauliflower mash under my sautéed veg was so good. Went here for restaurant week, and the place was busy! We had a 10 minute wait to get a table. Staff were constantly moving and maintained a happy attitude with all the diners. They were super accommodating and brought us a car seat carrier to our table to put the seat in. It's nice that they have this as an option instead of the standard high chair. As for the food, we did the Sassy curds and bbq brisket crepe for appetizers. The curds are some of my favorite in town and have just the right breading to cheese ratio and a thinner ranch. I kind of wish that they would have some hot honey with them, just to play up the honey in the name. The crepe was a fun appetizer option, but something about it just didn't work for us. I'm not sure if it was the coleslaw or something else. For the mains we got the mango Mahi and the Korean bowl. The fish had a good flavor, but it was a little overcooked and could have used more of the mango beurre blanc to go with all the rice. The Korean bowl was quite tasty and well sauced. The shaved carrots were a fun touch. For dessert, we got the French silk pie and the tres leches cheesecake. The pie was nice and silky and had a good malty taste. The crust was a little pale though. The tres leches cheesecake also had strawberries and kiwi on it. The cake was sweet but not soggy, however the cheesecake layer didn't have a texture that I would have expected. It was almost like a jelloesque texture. I was also kind of expecting more of a one to one ratio, and this was more 3 parts cake 1 part cheesecake.
