When it comes to fly fishing on the legendary waters of the Upper Madison River, the only place to consider is the Old Kirby Place. Step out of the door of the lodge and you'll be in the Madison River in just steps. Perfect for fisherman that want to wade in. They also offer guided float trips on historic river. Ask for Montana Mike, he's the best. Great stories, and a great guide. Lodging stay includes meals (which were incredible) and full beverage offerings. I always like to relax on the riverside Caddis Shack with a scotch on the rocks after a long day on the river. Easy access to the areas other sites. We took a half-day trip into Yellowstone. The west gate is about a half an hour away. Perfect to shoot over and witness Old Faithful. Hebgen and Quake lakes are also on the way and offer up other experiences for Fly Fisherman. Ennis, MT is also about a half hour away. A quaint fishing town that has some fun events throughout the summer and a great local pond that is free for kids to fish. All in all, if you want a great experience in the West Yellowstone area of MT then check out Old Kirby Place. And if the owner Bruce is in town, make sure to ask him for a story or two. read more

The Old Kirby Place is Cameron, Montana is beautiful sitting right on The Madison River but!!!!if you want service DO NOT go there The manager, Brent, is not a host, cook, problem solver and in no way makes your stay pleasant Brent's cooking skills are way below par. Our first breakfast, consisting of burn/charred bacon and beyond burned toast. I still cannot figure out how one burns toast in a toaster Brent did not serve breakfast on our schedule and I am not sure he had one. If you do not mind having a gallon jug of milk sitting on the breakfast table and two 1/2 gallons of orange sitting on the table, then Brent is your guy. I do mind. Our second breakfast consisted of steaks that had been sitting on the counter all day and all night. Most people in the party were afraid to eat the steaks. There was no fruit or anything healthy. The third breakfast---oh! Brent never showed up, adults and kids checked out without a breakfast and the Lodge is not convenient where you can go down the street to eat I would NOT recommend The Old Kirby Place. We were told an open bar---never saw an open bar and actually had to ask Brent for drinks. It seems Brent does most of the drinking and the guests are on their own read more

I am counting the days until my next visit to the OKP in mid-September. This rustic-chic lodge is the perfect place to enjoy true peace and solitude. Daily happy hour in the Caddis Shack is not to be missed! The food and company add to the relaxing ambiance. Accommodations are relaxing and include everything needed for a comfortable stay. Stargazing on the stroll back to my cabin from the main house every evening was a highlight. Also, being only 45 minutes from Yellowstone is beyond convenient. I cannot wait to go back in September so that I may share this hidden hideaway with my husband! read more

The Old Kirby Place is one of my favorite places to stay. Bruce (the owner) and Brent (the manager) have always been good to us. The accommodations are nice and comfortable, and the meals are great. The fishing was excellent. We had two drift-boat guides and caught more fish than I could imagine. I have stayed at the OKP many times over the years and once again, it did not disappoint. Already looking forward to doing it again next year! read more

There is so much to love about this place. First of all you can't beat being right on the banks of the Madison River. The location is perfect. The lodge, cabins and grounds are well kept and comfortable. After a day of fishing, relaxing with a cocktail and a great meal is the perfect way to end the day. When they say you will get Montana size meals they aren't kidding! There is also good fishing in the private pond located on the property. I will definitely be returning to the OKP. read more

Full disclosure, this is a great location along the Madison River. The cabins and main lodge are ok. They have beds, warm showers and clean towels. However, the guy who runs the place, Brent, is the brother of the owner. This guy is a real creep. He wears dirty sweat pants around the place, burns the bacon, drinks whiskey and wine while the sun is up and constantly bugs the guests. He even yelled at my brother on his wedding day! I drove around alot during my trip to Montana and noticed many places along the Madison to stay in cabins. I'd look elsewhere as you can sleep and get guide and not pay for the privilege of being around a jerk who trys to ruin your vacation and good time. read more

The OKP is amazing! We spent 3 nights here and it was one of the best experiences we've ever had. Fishing the Madison River with our guide for two days was so cool. It was our first time fly fishing and our guide was super patient and knew the river so well. After fishing, the food and drinks were delicious. One of the best parts was relaxing at the Caddis Shack with a glass of wine before dinner. We'll be back for sure. read more

I really wanted to like this place. The Madison River is beautiful, the cabins are 'ok' but the guy (Brent) who is in charge of running the place completely ruins the experience. The initial impression you get when you walk into the lodge is one where the proprietor doesn't care enough to clean up after previous guests and provides meals that are borderline health code violations. He left steaks out of the fridge for a day and a half before cooking them to serve for breakfast. It's a wonder everyone didn't get extremely sick. He drank heavily most of the time we were there and even yelled at one of the guests. He's lucky a few of the remaining guests showed enough restraint not to stomp him in the mud. You can find something much more accommodating and much more reasonable in cost anywhere else along the Madison. In fact, West Fork Cabins (located across the Hutchins Bridge) would be a far better experience. Any choice you made that didn't include "Brent the Host from Hell" would be a step up! read more

The Old Kirby Place is one of my favorite places on Earth. Amazing and comfortable spot to connect with family and friends, lots of outdoor areas on the property to explore. Our son loves kayaking in Lake LeAnn. About 30 mins to both West Yellowstone and Ennis. Each summer, we look forward to great daytime hiking and sunset cocktails on the Madison River at the Caddis Shack. Highly recommend!! read more
