This is the perfect base if you are exploring Yellowstone everyday. You can walk to pretty much everything in West Yellowstone from here. My boyfriend and I stayed here for a few nights in a private room with a bathroom. Our room was outside by parking spaces, so I liked that. The room itself was cozy and perfect for us to come back to after long days hiking and exploring. The room had a refrigerator and microwave, which was nice. The bed was comfortable. The room was clean. The heat did not work well, so it got a bit chilly through the night. The hotel has a cute gift shop and you get a discount if you are staying in the hotel. We received discount vouchers for the restaurant next door. To me that was awesome! The hotel was a little pricey, but seemed cheaper than most places around there. I wanted so badly to like this hotel. The staff is friendly and the hotel is historic. However, not a great stay. You hear the creaking and closing of all your neighbors' doors and hallway use. No tv and tiny room were tough to muddle through. There is also a big step down from the bathroom to the bedroom, which I missed in the middle of the night and sprained my ankle. Also the bathroom wasn't particularly spotless. If you want to stay here for the history, that makes sense. Otherwise, not at all. read more

Rustic. Very rustic. At first glance I thought the motel section in back was a homeless shelter. Our room was in the historic building and was so old TVs haven't been installed BUT we did have a toilet and bathtub (community showers down the hall). Grease pit Fan from timberline cafe running pretty constantly through our open window with no screen. Total firetrap, but alarms in room. Yellowstone entrance two blocks. I was thinking an historical hotel how clean it would be. But I wrong. If you ever go to Yellowstone, that hotel is super friendly and the room is clean. The hotel is own by a family business owner very friendly and nice. Even the staff that works in there are friendly and fun to talk too. I stayed 4 night, on July 4th, the hotel offer us a BBQ dinner at 8 pm and for fireworks at 10 pm. We came late little over 9 pm, the owner saw us coming offer us BBQ dinner. I highly recommended this hotel if you ever go to Yellowstone. And is very convenient the entrance from Yellowstone is only 1/2 miles away from the hotel read more

The check-in lady was really friendly and we were happy to learn about the free coffee and hot chocolate making machine (it reminded me of an ice skating rink?) in the main building. We were happy that we were able to park right outside of our room. The price seemed fine (not the lowest but not terrible). For some reason I have no memories of the room. They didn't have a breakfast option on-site but each of the guests got a $5 off coupon for Timberline Cafe. I believe it could also be used at some other near-by restaurant but the other one wasn't open that day. The Good: location, charming room, really nice guy who checked us in, huckleberry hot cocoa The Bad: the woman who works in the gift shop will blast country music during her entire shift. Because of the age of the building, sound travels easily. Our room was right over the speaker and we heard all of her poor musical choices. We stayed here for a night, and aside from the inconvenience of needing to check in by 10PM (we drove out of the park just to come here to get the key), it was a great stay. I love the cleanliness of the bathrooms and showers, and the bed was really comfortable though a tad small. I stayed in a female dorm (which was basically just two twin beds in one room), and everything I needed was in the room. There was a sink in the room too which was convenient, and there were hangers on the wall and outlets for both beds. The wifi was also quick. Service was friendly as well, and I enjoyed my stay here! There's an added bonus of a $10 voucher to Timberline Cafe next door (although I would've been happy with $10 less in my hotel cost). They have a variety of rooms as well, not just the dorm room but also rooms with bigger beds and such. I would recommend the Madison! read more

Booked a room in the Madison for an overnight trip into Yellowstone. The room was clean, the staff were nice, and they let us do a late checkout. All great things! I really enjoyed no TV in the room, and hope other locations model that in Montana. The shared bathroom was fine, and the bathrooms were clean, and well kept. It's clean, well designed; has a great layout with commercial activities at the first floor and all the rooms on the second floor (so that no one is waking you up walking on top of your head like in other places). Thank goodness my boyfriend and I are both sized petite or else we'd be uncomfortable in this room. But the 9x12 food room was just right for us--and so was the price in this location. Even better it was clean all the way. ROOM AMENITIES Somehow within that small room there fit a bed, small dining table and two chairs, small dresser, tiny fridge, and a TV. Sometimes we still had to step over each other and our luggage to get from one side of the room to the other, but since we're not too picky it was perfect. The bathroom was very clean with enough towels and make-up towels and remover (never seen those before in a hotel). I noticed the shower head stopped shortly above mine so a taller person may find that annoying. THE REST OF THE HOTEL I barely got to check out the gift shop along the main road where the check-in desk was located but it seemed full of quirky and Yellowstone-related souvenirs. From 5am-11pm there is complimentary generic coffee, hot chocolate, and tea behind the desk. Thank goodness there was also a microwave there--we used that enough times. I noticed there was also a mini fridge there for other room's use. The WiFi wasn't spotty. While it wasn't mind-blowing it was reliable and free. Since West Yellowstone isn't that large to begin with, you can easily walk to many places from this hotel. read more

We were going to stay for 2 nights, but cancelled the second night in the early evening of our first night. We stayed in room 108 (not in the historic building). The room smelled of dog urine. Not sure where it was coming from, but it was definitely there. The owner of the hotel was super friendly and genuinely wanted his guests, and us to be content and comfortable, and I'm so sorry to be giving a poor review, but the room was pretty gross. The shower would not get hot either, and the toilet clogged easily. Yes, the place is older and is going to have older fixtures etc, but the overall feel was not clean or fresh. The building needs a ton of cleaning and work. Lesson learned(again) -You get what you pay for. read more

We just stayed here for two nights and it was wonderful. I prefer to stay in family owned historic hotels and The Madison did not disappoint. Room 9 was very comfortable and clean with a private bath. Hotel gave us a $10 voucher for breakfast next door at the Timberline which was very good and convenient. It'll probably be the cheapest place you'll find price-wise ($83 after tax for a single). Pros: Cheap, had vacancy on same day reservations, very clean, easy accessibility, free wifi, a $5 off coupon for the restaurant next door. Cons: walls thinner than paper (you can pretty much hear anything and everything that happens above, below, or next to you), communal restrooms and showers, men's restroom had a seriously plumbing problem but was unaddressed. Overall, I'd still give it a 4 star. The staff was helpful and friendly and the ambience is great. read more

I love motels. Madison Hotel is a hotel, but it does have a 'motel' area, which is where I stayed at. So... isn't that wonderful! Clean room, good environment, free coffee or hot chocolate in the hotel, and a gift shop inside the hotel. Everything I want in a hotel or motel, they have it, and they also provide coupons for a local restaurant. The price is fair. It's pretty cheap compare with other hotels or motels in town. You can't save that money if you want a place to live before or after a Yellowstone Park trip. If I ever visit this town again, Madison Hotel will be my first choice read more

Beautiful decoration of the hotel and the rooms. The room is so cozy we wished we could have stayed longer. And the owner is really nice - when I stumbled upon him after-hours, I told him that I have to leave early in morning and cannot come to the front desk to settle the bill in the morning (as suggested in our late checkin envelope), he was very considerate and took me to the office at 11pm and settled the bill for me. He also shared some great tips for visit to the park and warned us of the snow expected in the early hours of next morning. Will definitely stay here again! read more

This is a very basic hotel/motel. The rooms are small, but not cramped. Most importantly, they are very clean. I lead photography tours to YNP and used the Madison as our base camp in the Fall of 2015. All of our tour participants liked their rooms and we had no complaints or issues to speak of. The staff was very pleasant and professional. The $5 breakfast voucher was a pleasant surprise. Don't believe in the name of Historical Madison. This place is so mediocre. It is just an old and dirty motel, located right behind the gift shop. I reserved this hotel via hotel.com for 2 nights and paid & 188 per night. The register clerk gave me the paper to sighed when I arrived for the first night and I paid for it in advance. The motel was very dirty. The bathroom was not cleaned and I asked for the hair blower for an hour before someone could bring it to me. There was only one chair in the room and it was very dirty carpet and bad smell. I did not want to make a complaint at that time because we were very tired from the long drive. In the morning, we left to explore Yellowstone park and the hotel manager left me text messages and demanded me to move out. She also stated that she couldn't find my reservation. I was trying to explain to her that I had the confirmation with hotel.com but she stated that the hotel was overbooked and I had to call hotel.com myself. She couldn't find my name and she wanted me to leave now. I was at Mammoth Hot Spring and I couldn't contact anybody due to no signals inside the park. I was trying to call and explain to her that I had the confirmation for reservation and asked her to honor it. She still stated that I only paid for the first night and I needed to gather my stuffs and leave. It was very disturbed experience to be treated unfairly. I drove back for almost 1 hour to the hotel and she had the owner who happened to be her husband spoke to me on the phone. He stated that there was the confusion with the reservation and asked me if I wanted to stay for one more night. I told him that my enjoyment inside Yellowstone was already ruined and I wanted to check out. No apology from the business owner or anyone. Ironically, I had to say thank you to them. I saved almost $ 70 because I found Travel lodge down the street via Orbiz.com and paid $120 for that night. The room was bigger and cleaner. There was no dirty carpet and non sanitized bathroom. I found a nice size table set and comfortable 2 queen beds there. I am an RN and if anyone who reads my comment asking for any proof, I have text messages from Madison Historical Hotel motel and the proofs of hotel.com's reservation These are the facts, do not stay in this hotel and believe in the lying reviews that they deceived you. This is also the location for the "West Yellowstone International Hostel", which is a very quaint, log cabin-like place that reminds me more of grandma's house than a hostel. There isn't your usual big communal space and kitchen like you would expect at your regular hostel, but you do get private rooms and plenty of character. read more

I stayed in the 100-year-old "hotel" part of this establishment in mid-June for five days. Very interesting place, it is a two-story log cabin-type building with a fairly extensive gift shop and lobby with TV on the first floor. The hotel rooms and bathrooms are upstairs. The décor is wood, wood, and more wood, very much what I would expect in this type of building. I did have two minor issues: 1) One of the two shower rooms was still being renovated, so it was unavailable. I had no problem getting a shower when I needed one, though. 2) The heat needed to be reset in my room one night. The problem was addressed within a few hours. At the back of the building, there is a refreshment area on the first floor that has a coffeemaker with hot water for us tea drinkers, a small communal fridge, and an ice maker. Next door, you will find a café called the Timberline. I had breakfast there each day and found the food good and the staff friendly. Pricewise, you really can't beat this place. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here, again. read more

Wonderful hotel, super owner and desk lady was amazingly sweet. Wonderful room and most pleasant experience in our cross country road trip. Arrived to find we had booked Norman Bates "Bates Motel" online without knowing it and had to run to find another quickly. It was disheartening until we found "The Madison" and it made everything perfect. Funny it cost less that the horror hotel we were almost stuck with too. Cozy, adorable log cabin look with blankets with bears on them....so fitting. Must have been 20 outlets in the place to plug in everything, Even wonderful special makeup wash clothes and super little soaps and matching nice shampoos. Comfy beds too ! They also have a nice gift shop and restaurant with killer tasting pies. What more could you ask for? Price was reasonable with area rates for the tourist spot. In fact very reasonable for that area.
