The downtown area in Bardstown is a very nice setting for such a historical place as this Tavern. I have been to Bardstown numerous times and always intrigued to stop at het Tavern and enjoy the food and ambiance. I was a bit disappointed. The place was not particularly packed on a Saturday afternoon, yet the staff was not very attentive to the guest. Every waitresses was wearing an apron that could use a trip or two to the dry cleaners, it simply looks unsanitary to be serving food with a dirty apron. It is not like a pill just happened; it was simply dirty on all the ones that I saw. The soups of the day were quite delicious. However the entrees leave some room for a better meal. Just because the place is old and rustic, it should not need go the extra mile and look in the brinks of looking abandon. In an attempt to make the place look period correct, they have placed some items in the dinning are that simply look out of place and in need of a good dusting. I will not be returning. read more

My mother came here 25 years ago. We came here today with her promising us a great experience. Unfortunately, it was less than appealing. We were promised a 15 min wait, but instead we ended up waiting an hour and 15 minutes. We waited for our food for 30 minutes and when it finally came, it was disgusting. We ended up paying 71 dollars for something we couldn't eat. They're were largely unprepared and short staffed. On behalf of justice, please do not go here. read more

We had to ask several times for refills and at one point we did not see her for more than 15 minutes. If you're ever visiting Bardstown you have to stop by for a bite to eat and maybe a quick walk through of the hotel upstairs. This place has been recommended by many people and the reviews were accurate. This place is a great place to get a quick review of the history Bardstown and how important this little tavern/hotel was to American history. Worth a trip here and worth the time walking around viewing the artifacts on display. So, why did Jesse James shoot up the room? We were fine with our 20 minute wait, however, once seated we were never once looked at or acknowledged. We were a group of 2 people and a group of 4 who sat down after us got their drinks before we even ordered ours. I'm in town for a fundraising bicycle ride and booked a room for the night, it rained on my ride and I was soaked. I arrived a few hours before check in time, and pleaded for them to allow me to check in early. My room wasn't ready yet, but she made sure to get it next on the list. She let me check in as early as possible so I could get out of my wet cycling clothes. After I got a shower and changed, I had drinks at the bar at the tavern. The bartenders were awesome. Very nice and kept good conversation all while taking care of the rest of the bar. Highly recommended! They also have a huge selection of bourbon. read more

Don't eat here. It's dirty. The food is gross. You will leave feeling ripped off. My family and I had reservations for Easter Brunch. We got there at 1:30 and walked into a mostly empty restaurant. The plates for the buffet were dirty, and that should have been our first indicator to just leave. There was salad straight out of the bag on the table, and the food had been out on the buffet line for a while. There were rehydrated hash browns and mashed potatoes. Everything was barely lukewarm. The turkey was dry. My husband got food poisoning and was luckily the only one to get it out of the group. The bathrooms are equally dirty. If you must come- just go to the bourbon bar and check out the upstairs. We will never be going back. I wish I could give zero stars. read more

We ate at the tavern for our 18th anniversary. Very unique building the food was very tasty. I got the fried steak which was way better than expected. The waitress was amazing. It was pouring down rain the day that we visited bardstown and didn't get to enjoy the small town as much as we like but we will be returning. We didn't eat here, only dropped into the bar for a drink so we could see the place. Pretty cool historic building with lots to look at, including a gift shop. The bar area we were in looked like it was added on at some point, not historic at all. They did however have 125 kinds of bourbon, which is worth seeing in itself. Incredible place, amazing history, and awesome Bourbon selection. However, service in the bar is below average to say the least. Walking in you're immediately yelled to check in with the hostess, no walk ins welcome. The bartender that looks like he's the lead singer for a Good Charlotte cover band is slow and quite rude. Usually a good bourbon bar (and this is one) can cover a multitude of sins but not tonight. Super busy on a Monday night (most other things are closed), we tried to sit on the bar side and the bartender was just swamped. She did her best and her cocktails were good but service was slow and when our not-good dinners were served she never stopped back to check so we could get salt and pepper, a reheat on mashed potatoes that were served ice cold, or a substitute for the disgusting canned slimy green beans on the plate. No water refills, and had to wait forever to get the check. We asked to speak to the manager and her answer was "the bartender should have stopped serving food". WTH??? Stop your business because you can't adequately staff? Bardstown is a food wasteland, should have just sucked it up and gone fast food, at least it's cheap and hot. read more

Sorely disappointed in it all. I had the walnut crusted chicken with bourbon sauce, collard greens, and a baked potato. The portions were small, the collards were not hot and lacked flavor. The chicken tasted okay, but it wasn't hot and was nothing spectacular. A friend dining with us sent her rice pilaf back to have them microwave it because it was cold. I could almost understand it if they were busy, but there were a lot of empty tables. I will admit the blackberry cobbler was pretty good. Had a great experience when I went with my friend to celebrate her birthday. Our server was great! (I wish I remembered her name.) Most (or all) of their drinks were Bourbon based and we weren't sure what to order, but the server was extremely helpful in selecting some. They were really good so we got a second round. The stuffed mushroom appetizer was AMAZING! I think they were the best I've ever had. We split the veggie entree and it was very good. I would definitely order it again. We also split the bread pudding to go. It was pretty good later that night but probably really good when it first comes out. The building is really old and interesting. I would not recommend OTI. Hostess station was confusing as to who to place our name with. Service was mediocre. Tickets for party of four were printed incorrectly. The Hot brown was cold and fried chicken not completely cooked. Cheese biscuits were good, but we were not charged for them or the dessert. Bathroom only gad one working stall. Dirty overall. Very unique tavern that opened in 1779. I found the building very interesting as the interior is quite original. We ate here for lunch on a Saturday; I enjoyed their Hot Brown plate. My brother liked his chicken sandwich but father found his burger to be just average. Their menu is a large selection of unique bottled beer and bourbon. Last month I had the pleasure of dining at theTalbott Tavern. Our group was hitting small distilleries on the Craft Bourbon Trail (highly recommend this self-guided tour) and planned to leave on the Bluegrass Parkway when we spotted a small craft distillery on the edge of town, Preservation Distillery. Had a really great tour and tasting there, and our tour guide told us we were making a mistake not staying for the fried chicken at the Talbott Tavern. After a day of tasting that sounded like a good idea, and we are so glad we stayed. The fried chicken, country steak, regional burgoo stew, and berry cobbler were some of the best we've had on the bourbon trail. And can I add, don't miss the beer cheese! Such a cool Historic place! Great food and awesome ambiance. So much history here (Abraham Lincoln, Jesse James, and many others have all stayed here). Burgoo!!!!! If I could do a review with one word that would be it. But if more is needed... Great staff with fun stories bout ghosts in the establishment. Fried chicken to die for. Old country decor. HUGE bourbon selection. Did I mention the Burgoo? My wife and I stumbled upon this restaurant on a road trip to Tennessee. We had plans to do more that day. 5 hours later I was stuffed and drunk and happy. Had a return visit with my kids for more food and we all just loved it. Dinner was excellent. I ordered the burgoo! It was delicious, but a lot different than burgoo you would find in Owensboro, Ky. It was like a marriage of burgoo and chili.
