Nestled in downtown Bardstown, Kentucky is this cute restaurant. They have a very welcoming space and you walk into the main area where they have many beers on draft and many of them brewed in house. We came in with a larger group due to our bourbon tour and they were kind and accommodating. They had some specials for the summer and they left us the menu now as a vegetarian my options were a bit limited, but they had a few items on the appetizer list that were quite appealing. I also got an aperol spritz to celebrate end of summer, which was excellent. For my meal, I actually got the pretzel which came with their queso as well as their house mustard. Now I get the pretzel often depending on the location and I was so impressed with how tasty it was and how great the mustard was. I say that because a lot of places do not have tasty mustard when it comes to their pretzels. Queso was also very flavorful. The staff was very attentive for our large group and we had an excellent time. Scout and Scholar is a good place to go when you realize you need food in between visiting distilleries around the Bardstown area. Is the food the greatest? No - my chicken tender sandwich was a bit dry and the side salad had tomatoes that looked like they went through a microwave before they were put on the plate. That being said, the food isn't terrible, the staff wasn't rude or overbearing - it's food that allows you to feed the alcohol and enjoy some decent beer that is palatable, especially to those who don't like bourbon or realize that maybe they have had a bit too much and need to slow down. read more

I very rarely leave bad reviews or don't recommend a spot to visit, but my husband and our 2 friends came here for dinner a couple of weekends ago and had an absolutely awful time. We had finished our distillery tour at Heaven Hill and wanted to eat dinner together before we all headed back to Indianapolis. Scout & Scholar popped up with good reviews, so we decided to try it out. Our server had started our friendly, but as soon as one of our friends said his beer did not taste good and wanted to order a different one, his whole attitude changed and he stopped checking on us. I ordered the fried chicken plate Buffalo style that was supposed to be "chicken fingers" and they came out lukewarm and so tiny (they looked like chicken nuggets), but were $19.... insane. They also had a side of old coleslaw (was not the same color as what came out on top of either hot dog dish and didn't taste good). I had also asked for a side of buffalo sauce to dip them into and somehow it was more spicy than my actual chicken fingers, yet they said they only had the one buffalo sauce. My husband ordered the slaw dogs and one of our friends ordered the tacos dogs. The "hot dogs" were about 1/3rd the size of a normal hot dog. They kept joking that they were served Slim Jim's. The hot dogs were 5% hot dog, 45% coleslaw, and 50% bread and were $18 for 2... absolutely crazy. Our other friend ordered the chicken salad sandwich and a side of mashed potatoes and her sandwich was also way too much bread to filling ratio. The gravy that was brought out for the mashed potatoes was about twice the amount that was needed, so when she poured it over the mashed potatoes it spilled all over their side of the table. The last time our server came to check on us was right after this happened/we got our food and he said he would bring them a new napkin since one was used to clean up all of the gravy. He never came back with a new napkin as promised, never came back to ask if we wanted another rounds of drinks, and never came back to refill our waters at all during our entire stay. We waited for 20-30 minutes after we were all done eating before could finally pay because he wouldn't check on our table/wasn't in the dining area at all. When he gave us our bills ours was over $10 higher than our friends, despite spending the same amount of money as them on food and drinks (giving them the benefit of the doubt that they took off our friend's beer entirely since they had to give him a different one). It's been a bit since I've been to Scout & Scholar. Possibly since they got a new owner, definitely since they got a new menu. Came on a slow Saturday morning and service was great. I love craft beer flights and the three we tried didn't disappoint. Some of the food today was a miss for me. Love their pretzel as always. We also tried the fish sandwich and the chicken tenders, Buffalo style. Hope you like dill. Both the ranch and the tarter were very dill heavy and I just wasn't a fan of either sauce. The chicken was good. My tater tots were okay- pretty average as tots go. The slaw is on the sweet side. My husband really liked the fish sandwich. We also tried the potato soup today which was on special. She said it was homemade. We really enjoyed it. It was a pretty strait forward no flairs potato soup with a little bit of corn, carrots, and maybe onion. It was light for potato soup. I would recommend it! read more

Great food, service, and atmosphere for lunch. I stopped here with a colleague while in the area for a work trip. It was right around lunch time on a Friday and the restaurant had about half the tables occupied plus some folks sitting at the bar. Not too busy. We sat at the bar and were attended to promptly by one of the bartenders. No drinks for us on that day, although I wish I could have tried something from the brewery. We ordered and received our food rather quickly, although we had time to take in the atmosphere - high ceilings, a view of the brewery through glass, and a beautiful bar space in front of us. The pulled pork slider and hot Italian sub looked appetizing when they arrived, and we were hungry. The first thing we both noticed was that the buns were amazing. Felt almost freshly baked and had great flavor. My pulled pork was juicy and the sauce was mild in spice, sweet and tangy in flavor. We both ordered the tater tots which were seasoned. Pretty heavy on the salt in the seasoning, which is my preference, and crispy. My colleague enjoyed his sandwich and tots, too. Overall, I think this was a fantastic spot to stop for lunch and I wish I could come back for dinnertime to enjoy a few beers and another entree off of the menu. read more

Unprepared, poor communication, lack of management and generally clueless. Sunday evening, Labor Day weekend in a tourist destination town. Waited 45 minutes for a table while we sat at the bar. Bartender was the highlight of the evening, everything from there went down hill fast and hard. Our 45 minute wait came and went as the hostess sat other guests ahead of us. Once we called her out on it, she said our table would be ready shortly. A table she then had to clear. Once seated, the waitress took a short lifetime paying any attention to us, finally brought us waters and we gave her our order, to which she said, hmmm I don't know if we are out of the tots or not, so we gave her a "plan b" order of wings and pretzel. She walked away, only to come back to our empty water glasses to say they were indeed out of tots. So we expected the wings and the pretzel. Water glasses still unfilled, and our waitress absent, one of our party went to the bar to get a beer, only to find our waitress standing there, but she did offer to carry the beer to the table.... water glasses still empty. Finally the waitress shows up with the food, and the tots we were promised they were out of magically appeared!!!! Along with another portion carried to another table for another customer.... and besides the tots we got $18 worth of wings that we didn't want if they had the tots! So, no tots, then tots, then wings we didn't really want, no water, no wait service for beer orders, and...... she delivered all that without any silverware and simply walked away.... we had to hunt down the hostess to get some silverware... the only excuse the waitress offered was they just got slammed and were unprepared... on a holiday weekend... that's ON THE CALENDER EVERY YEAR.... in a TOURIST DESTINATION. Un acceptable. There was NO visible manager on site, no authority figure guiding the pitiful excuses for employees that wandered around aimlessly with disgusted looks on their faces, trying their hardest to ignore all the guests. There was one male food runner and between him and the bartender, who was also running food, they were the only two people out of at least 8 that put any effort into anything. Showing up is a good first step to having a job, but in a service job, you have to actually PROVIDE SERVICE! If the service is good enough, I don't even care if you smile... but if it SUCKS you need to find another job you're actually qualified for... like being a tree stump. read more

Paid a visit while spending some time in Bardstown and it did not disappoint. This place gets pretty busy and I get it. Ordered the classic smash burger and it was really good. Patties were nice and juicy, the buns were soft and the whole thing was delightfully greasy. Tater tots were crispy and tasty. We also had the giant pretzel and it was warm, soft, and salty. The country ham and beer cheese were a nice addition to the pretzel. Cocktails tasted great and went well with our meals. Service was quick and friendly. So, this is a really cool brewery. Fantastic service and location, fair prices, quality food, and excellent beer. What more is there to ask for in such a place? We had a salted pretzel as a starter and the house mustard was great. I liked the cheese just fine, but wish they had a beer cheese instead of standard queso (but no biggie). I ordered the bangers and mash as my main per our server's recommendation and it was great, the best I've had outside of British style pubs. My wife had the BBQ sandwich which she liked and she really liked the crispy tater tots. I tried a few of the beers and apologies as I can't remember the names though one was an IPA, one a chocolatey stout, the last a lager. My wife had a sour. All were really, really good. read more

I stopped in for lunch and it was a bonus they were a brewery. I had a chicken sandwich and fries, both of which were very tasty. I paired my food with a flight and enjoyed them all and left with a 32oz of their Irish red ale. I brought it back to Texas for my roommates to try and we cracked it open the other night upon celebrating my return and they both enjoyed it. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating to accommodate larger groups and there is street parking out front and a parking lot right next to that. I highly recommend stopping in. read more

In a nutshell: This was our go to place in downtown Bardstown for local brews and delicious, reasonably priced food, but after the ownership changed and the menu got much smaller and much pricier for what we perceived as lower quality food, we probably won't be eating there again in the future. In depth: The restaurant and venue are both very well kept and the outdoor areas are perfect both for kids to get energy out on their turf lawn, and for social gatherings or friends, coworkers, or families to hang out. The front bar areas are specious, and if you are waiting for a table, this is probably one of the places better equipped to make that wait time more bearable. The local brews they offer, as well as guest rotations are (of all the ones we've had) delicious and thanks to their wide variety of brews, there's bound to be one for everyone that goes there. The bar service is quick and friendly, and for what you get, the pours are reasonably priced. As for the food, as I mentioned in the nutshell, the restaurant recently went though some ownership changes (my understanding is one of the families that owned it sold out their shares and gave full control to the other family, but don't quote me). Following this change, the menu shrunk in size and many of the items my family and I liked such as the casadillas got cut from the new slimmed down menu. Of what did stay on the menu, many of them got quite a price hike, such as the pretzel appetizer nearly doubling in price while the portion remained the same. It's a similar story for the smash burgers and what else little remains of the original menu. Normally, when restaurants do this, it's to tighten up on the quality of the items they're best at, but aside from increasing profit margin and simplifying their food orders, it's difficult to see a purpose that benefitted the customer. It's for all these reasons, as well as just generally not being impressed with the service and wait times that we'll probably just make this a spot for good beers and that's about it, which is a shame, as in the past the food and pricing is what also kept is coming back. I'll update this review as needed. We're not upset or anything. We understand business decision must be made to preserve profitability, but in the case of our particular group of local regulars, it's just not as attractive of a restaurant option any more, especially with so many new places opening up in the last few years a few blocks away. read more

Our server was super knowledgeable but maybe a little too pushy about what she thought we should order. I don't know if there was a promotion for servers or something but it got to be annoying that every time we ordered, she had a comment to steer us to something else. Otherwise she was awesome. This was not a good first experience. To start, the service was really bad. The whole time our server seemed to be tending to all of the tables around us but was oblivious to us. P We placed our drink orders and it took a long time to get most of them, and even longer for one other. The sangria was just okay. I was told the Old Fashion was good. We had checked out the menu online but we found out that some of the items listed online were not on the printed menu and vice versa. When we placed our order we were informed that a couple items we wanted were out. In most restaurants this would have been conveyed when we got our menus to prevent this from happening. We had finished our drinks well before our food came . We sat with empty glasses for a bit. Oddly enough, our first drinks were served in clear SOLO cups. The refills were in actually glasses. The food took a while to come out. We kept waiting for the appetizer and my wife's salad, but didn't come out first as expected. They came out with our entrees. The food was a mixed bag. The sausage balls were more breading than sausage, making them somewhat dry. I was told the burger was just okay. The crispy potatoes were good. My wife's steak was good as well. However, it would be nice if they offered more than one size of steak instead of the single large 16oz. size. My dish, the Hot Brown was pretty sad. Two plain limp pieces of bread, not even toasted. There was not enough mornay sauce and what was there was bland. The assembly/presentation was just sloppy. I've had a lot of Hot Browns from a lot of restaurants. It's one of my favorite dishes. This one was very disappointing. We asked for a couple boxes and our check. We waited.... and waited. I eventually had to go to the bar and ask someone for the boxes. Magically the server suddenly appeared right after. We saw tables that we seats nearly30 minutes after us had already gotten their bill, paid and left. These were tables that had the same server as us. I tried waiving to get the server's attention, but thy never seemed to notice. The icing on the cake was when we got the check. The price for the steak and for the burger were higher than what was on the menu, both printed and online. The ribeye was $49 instead of $44, and the smash burger was $20 instead of $18. We were never told of the price changes when we ordered. Apparently they don't know how to update the prices on the website and can't be bothered to, or are too cheap to, print updated menus. Even other details on the check were wrong. It listed us as a party of 6 when there were only 3 of us. The whole experience felt like the place is poorly managed. We may go back, as some of the other menu items seemed appealing, including the items they were out of, but some other reviews here have some not so favorable comments about this.
