FIRST IMPRESSION: Although I had passed through in the area in the past while on trips to hike or skywatch at Vasquez Rocks, Saturday, June 26, 2021 was my first ever visit here. Sort of comical, I did I come away from thia experience happy but, also mad. I was happy based on my total experience and mad that I had not visited sooner. STAFF WOWING AFFECT: Yes, they truly wowed as I found them all to be extremely knowledgeable and familiar with every aspect of this shop. They were also quite enthusiastic and overall very upbeat. These type employees always make for the best encounters. Their job was to sell books and they did just that effortlessly. APPEARANCE: I loved that they had signs hanging from the ceiling that defined the various sections of the store. They also had blackboards areas where colored chalk is turned into attractive, artistic signage. I will note that this was an impeccably clean store, unlike B&N where from time to time you can find a coffee cup and/or a napkin here or there. RESTROOMS: I believe I spotted a sign stating that the shop didn't have a restroom for it's customers but, I am not 100% on this one. PARKING: This shop is situated in a stripmall, so the parking is merely steps from the front door and in grand abundance. HOURS ON MY VISIT: I was there on a Saturday and they stayed open until 1900 hours (7 P.M.) IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW: This shop hosts author signings. Information for any and all events can found on their social media pages (IG/FB). IT'S ON SALE: There is a sale every day of the week on one genre or another ans there is even a dsy qhen CDs, DVDs and LP go on sale... EVERY DAY... REALLY! If you haven't shopped here and you have a heartbeat AND you are reading this you really have to be asking yourself LOYALTY PROGRAM: For ever ten dollars you spend you receive a stamp on a card that is conveniently shaped like a bookmark (imagine that ingenuity!). Get ten stamps and it is redeemable for a five dollar book of your choice (I like this concept also used at Fatburger). RARE BOOKS: Even though I didn't purchase anything from this area, I found plenty that I already owned in their impressive collection (as a book collector this always lends to me a warm comforting feeling). This includes the only other copy of book by William Harrison Ainsworth that I have ever come across. (mine is an 1836... can't recall what theirs was... 1830-something or another). THE HAUL: I left with books on the history of L.A., the TCM Christmas movie book, a vocabulary builder, Bauermeister's The Scent Keeper, four books for children, the DVD Hook (to soon be shown at the 2021 B.F.F. (Backyard Film Festival)) and lastly some accomplishment stickers. END GAME: I would highly recommend this shop to all bibliophiles as it is well worth your time. The first thing that struck me was the spectacular aroma of the vintage literature. IYKYK, I was taken back to another time as soon as I walked in! The store is arranged and organized well The staff were very pleasant and friendly. I was informed of ways that I could receive future discounts along with recommended reads. A bit similar to LA's The Last Bookstore, but a smaller gem in Santa Clarita. I might say small but it is packed with such an assortment of classics literature, comics, psychology, self help, history, children's and cooking books just to name a few. Everything is so organized by genre and by authors last name which makes book hunting so effortless. Also has vinyls, movies, a few antique typewriters and much more to explore. Let me say it takes hours or maybe several days to explore it all. Books are semi used, so you'll find most at half off than new price. Several books in the $5-$8 range. Additionally, let me mention there's book carts outside their bookstore, mostly children's books which you can grab a bankers box and fill up for just $15! They do also offer a bag which you can fill up with books for a 10% off! Sure is an irresistible offer for all you bookworms out there. So forget Barnes and Noble and give The Open Book a visit, you'll be sure to fall in love. And have I mentioned, incredibly helpful staff. read more

Good service and selection. They are picky about which books they will buy from customers--but that means that the items kept in stock are interesting and fun to peruse. Lots of different categories here. They offer a loyalty program and some discount days. Lots of community events. This is a wonderful resource and fun place to shop. Dropped by on a trip to Sequoia/Kings National Parks, and was happy to visit. Plenty of parking in the strip mall, and happy that there was AC in the building! Good-sized bookstore, where they seem to have mostly used books (though saw a few new/like new books). They also have cute bookish items for purchase. Organization is pretty good. They do have the different sections (e.g., fiction, art, science fiction, etc.), and they have some signs here and there about authors. For example, you'll plainly see the Star Wars section. I was pleasantly surprised on their selection of vintage books. Definitely bought a few of those. They had some signed books, but not too many. It sounded like some signed books would get dropped off here and there, but that I'd have to check with the other Open Book stores to see what they have. The store itself is pretty clean. The books themselves were okay-ish clean, but any of the ones that were bought by the store from customers weren't always that great. I definitely picked up a few books that were pretty dusty, which meant that touching other books with my now-dusty/dirty hands could stain pages. The employees were nice, though! They were polite, helpful, professional. Had some nice chats. The loyalty program is nice, too. Fill out the stamp card and get a $5 store credit for a book. Pretty disappointed lately due to the selection of books, and some of the prices. I came here to sell books that were going for $5-8 each, and only got $1.50 total for 5 books. That means they're making roughly 90+% back for the book I just gave them free pretty much. I brought books here before and have gotten at least $20 something credit to use when perusing. I understand that there has been upper management changes to how much credit you give for the very good quality books you're buying from your customer, but come on, my books are only worth a quarter? This is worst than any bookstore buying I've ever experienced I wish they told me this before I made my appointment to come down. It barely covered my gas here. I pretty much paid to come here to deliver my books to them. What a waste of time and money! Better off taking my books to the goodwill and do them a favor. Their books are only $1.99. read more

Yelp 2018 Challenge (13 of 100) Not everyone likes to use a Kindle to read books and there is is something about books that you don't experience from an electronic reader. If you dogear the page on your Kindle you are probably going to need to replace the device. This is a good find if you are looking for a good price on a used book. What I noticed right away is a cool archway at the front doors made of books and I thought that was a nice touch especially if you are a parent with a young kid to show them something to get them into a book. They had a really good selection of various categories of books, fiction and non-fiction, self-help and cookbooks, kids books and others. There were some worn older editions, but not as many as I have seen in some stores. And pretty good prices on books that were in a very new condition. I would say if you need a book to read don't head directly for the Barnes and Noble in Valencia, come here first. read more

They're waaaay overpriced. You can find a lot of the books on Amazon for about the same price on on eBay for way less. Other used book stores (most of the ones I've been to) I clueing thrift shops sell used books for no more than $5. Some even only cents and they're like new. I did did 4 bibles here that I had been looking for though at a great price. Santa Clarita valley needs more used book stores. This seems to be the only one. I also love to go to the community book boxes and leave books there and often times find great ones for my son. Found a Harry Potter set and some really good Ann Rice and History books. I was excited when this place opened but honestly, unless you go on one of their "special" days (only reason they get 2 stars instead of one), they are overpriced AF. You are better off buying a used book on "the amazon" or rummaging through thrift books or for a brand new book at an actual great price go to the online store "book outlet", or heck, go support B&Nbs and buy one of their B&N books (those books are great and crazy affordable). And the fact that they not only force you to submit to a forehead temperature scan (really??) but those awful lunch lady gloves that make your hands sweat and you can't even flip through pages (really????!!!!), I get it, the owners hate Trump you've made your COVID point but your basically a crusty used book store and your Covid restriction are more rigid than a cafe in San Fran. Even the used books are in great condition and never disappoint. Some used book stores are unorganized and hard to find the author you're looking for but not here. If you've been to the Open Book by the mall, it's got the same great book store feel but bigger with more options and plenty to look at. It's not a Barnes and Noble as for a selection but that small town community feel is exactly what I like. Not to say they don't have plenty of books to peruse. It's in a decent area and the store is cute and clean. The prices are reasonable. It has several sections to browse and if they don't have what you're looking for they'll offer to get it for you, which is excellent. The staff is friendly and helpful, they greet you when you come in and are generally available if you have questions. They also have different events at the store which is really fun and worth a drive to be apart of readings, book clubs, and more. read more
