What a treasure in Sisters! Looking for a quick bite on my way back to Portland today, I stopped in and immediately the lovely server (Christa?) recommended a bowl of the soup, a super healthy cauliflower, mushroom and potato soup with no butter, oil or cream. It was an unbelievably delicious and warming meal served with crusty warm bread. I followed that with the tasty smokehouse board, all paired with a glass of French Rose to complete the perfect lunch/dinner. What a treat! The service was faultless: warm, genuine and prompt. The ambiance is excellent as well, with soft music, a gentle babble of conversation, original art for sale and gorgeous jewelry throughout. The locals all stop here for drinks and snacks, too... I think they have kept it their own little secret, given it's off the main drag (by a block!). Across all the categories, they knocked it out of the park. A home run, open door! Bravo. Totally unacceptable experience. A dog allowed to be inside, jumped up on my child as we were being sat inside the restaurant. Dogs should not be allowed inside a nice restaurant, especially not such a small sitting area. The seating was cramped and we were told we had to be done eating within an hour and half. We were staying a night in Sisters on our way to Grants Pass to see some friends. It was a Tuesday that we were there. The problem with that is a lot of the restaurants in Sisters are closed on Tuesday. We did not want bar food/ fast food. We only had two to choose from. We want to go to the Bistro but they were closed because they were getting the kitchen ready for the new chef that was coming the next day. We settled on The Open Door. It was just ok. Their bread basket with balsamic drizzle was good. They did not make the bread and the drizzle came from Costco. My husband said his steak salad was good. I had the halibut. It was very bland and flavorless. I think is would have been a lot better with a little seasoning and a squeeze of lemon juice. Since we did not have reservations so they sat us at the bar. That was fine until someone (that works there) ask if we were seated or did we seat our selves. It felt a little confrontational. We were sat there by the hostess, so I am not sure what the issue was. read more

This place used to be our absolute favorite place for dinner in Sisters. That was until the last time we dined there. I ordered the salmon which was said to be fresh and wild - two very important things for me. The meal was tastefully presented, however, it tasted and smelled so fishy that there was clearly no way it was fresh. When I informed our server, she said "Well of course it does - it's fish!" I thought, hmmm, maybe she doesn't eat much fish, so I told her that fresh fish should not taste fishy or smell. Her reply was something to the fact that after all, we were in Sisters. I could only assume that she meant we were a ways from the sea. I believe she offered another entree, but I truly cannot remember what it was. For us, the lack of concern and knowledge shown was kind of over the top. She wasn't apologetic or concerned about the quality of our meal. And, this time service was inattentive and cool. We looked up this restaurant a day before visiting and were exited to eat here. We were short on time headed to a work function. The hostess checked with the servers and they said a to-go order could be ready in 8 minutes. It took 30. We had one special request - dressing on the side of my salad because I have diet restrictions. It came with the dressing on it, we did not have time to exchange the order, we were made late to the work function, and I had to go without lunch. To their credit. All the staff was incredibly kind and the ambiance was absolutely perfect. It seems like my experience is atypical for The Open Door. read more

First review! My wife and I went here for lunch while staying in Sisters. We shared the Fall Salad and each had a sandwich. Tuna Melt for me and the "Crenshaw" for her. Both were excellent and perfect portions. Salad was big and indulgent and a great complement to the sandwiches (and Fall!). Restaurant is in the back of a cozy little art gallery. Maybe 7 tables and a little bar. Service was friendly and accommodating. Probably out of our budget for Dinner but lunch was great! read more

The Open Door was AMAZING! Not on the main strip so people miss it but it's worth straying a bit to get to. We had the soup of the day which was cioppino and a beautiful salad. The soup was a giant serving with shrimp, scallops, clams and two huge mussels, along with an array of vegetables and toasted baguette. The salad was a bed of greens topped with black beans, barley, avocado, grapes and some other special treats. The waitstaff was amazing, so sweet. We Loved Courtney. Pros- nice atmosphere- waitperson was sweet Cons- hostess didn't follow up when we requested a seat where it was warmer. Outside was very breezy- finally waitperson checked with her and said nothing available. We decided to stay and the seafood lasagne was recommended so I ordered. The wait time for dinner to arrive was extremely long- over 30 minutes- when the lasagne arrived it was a small piece from the end. Burnt noodles on two sides. Seafood over cooked and it was extremely dry. I ate a couple bits however couldn't finish. Mentioned it and they gave us a free dessert. $17.50 for a small dry burnt piece of lasagne and replaced with a $7 dessert. I won't be returning. read more

The Open Door is by far one of my favorite spots in town. I bring out of town guests here and during the summers, you just can't beat their patio ambiance and friendly staff. I do wish the menu was a bit more expansive, but what they do serve, is delicious! read more

Stopped in after a long hike for a beer ( husband) and glass of wine. Had the black bean hummus appetizer with veggies and requested some bread. They brought warm grilled bread at no extra charge. Wait staff were super nice. We sat outside in the sun. Everything coming out of the kitchen looked yummy. We will come back for a meal next time. read more

Pretty darn good. I'm a pdx foodie so my standards are above average. This restaurant is also an art gallery so my wife and I reviewed the art on the walls while waiting for our drinks before dinner. We had the lasagna and the"Good Earth". Both were very, very fresh and well prepared. The menu is a bit limited but all of the entrees and appetizers look excellent. We had the berries and ice cream with tawny port. All was yummy and I can honestly say this restaurant would do well in Portland---farm to table excellent!! read more

We enjoyed our time at the Open Door immensely. It's a lovely restaurant with an amazing out-door dining area, replete with art studio, greenhouse, food truck, bar, etc. We enjoyed our spot in the open air dining area. Every table was being used. Emily was a fabulous host/ server/ owner. We selected a delicious Barbera D'Alba red wine. It was yummy and inexpensive. We found out later, you can buy a wine bottle "to go" for even cheaper than drinking it there. Our beet salad was exquisite. And we wanted to love the Green Lentils/ Butternut Squash dish, but I don't think the cook knew how to make it. The lentils and squash were crunchy/ underdone. The table next to us of 8 people, all ordered the meatball dish. It smelled so good, I was envious that we hadn't ordered it. We would go again. It was a wonderful place. Just not perfect. read more

The Open Door offers an impossible menage of a Century-City-Chic menu and service by attractive women crammed into a mogul's fantasy of Joe Meek's cabin. However, Lana thought that the atmosphere was "nice," so Roger, who is writing this review, cannot rate it a single wandering star. In good weather a pleasant patio dining experience is available. Food: Three stars. This is a wine bar with a short menu of lunch entrees and desserts. Portions are large. The food tastes good but much of it is covered in kale and arugula to make it seem that it might also be good for you, which it isn't. Alcohol: Three stars. Full bar plus wine but no beer. Standard American mark-up for wine by the glass, three or more times the retail price; but a bottle was a bit less than twice average retail. A wine bar is not a high-volume retailer: you must allow for corkage, aka service charges, and for the fact that other costs are higher for low-volume retailers. Service: Two stars. Friendly and attentive but not overly so; but also slow and confused. Lana ordered the cheese board as her entree but it was served early, apparently as an appetizer. She dutifully shared it with Roger, in part because his entree was not served simultaneously. Indeed, after another 15 or 20 minutes, someone discovered that his entree was no longer available. His forced reorder resulted in a further delay. Noise: Three stars. A reasonable quiet patio was unfortunately accompanied by Frank Sinatra. Granted, Frankie is much more bearable than the usual thump-thump-scream-and-whine trash played at conversation-deadening volumes to keep the help hopping and the patrons eating quickly and leaving soon thereafter; but it's still not conducive to digestion. read more

The salad dressing I had with my summer salad (sweet potatoes, almonds, Gruyere, onion and more) was about the best salad dressing ever. Yellow Fin Tuna melt, omg! Loved this place! Not a big menu or big restaurant but the food was delicious. The tomato soup was one of the best I've ever tasted and the Panini sandwich had perfectly toasted bread and fresh ingredients. I definitely recommend the salad with fruit and nuts. I went here only a couple of days after The Open Door opened and was thoroughly impressed! Our waitress was very attentive not only to our party but to everyone else enjoying lunch on a beautiful sunny afternoon! Our water glasses were never empty, and the time it took to get our food was just right. In terms of the food, everything tasted great! I ordered a salad, and others at our table tried a couple of the different paninis. We all ate everything on our plates - delicious. We also opted to try the ginger snap cookie ice cream sandwich. Two ginger snaps with coconut ice cream sandwiched in between! This was a very refreshing treat on a hot summer day! Our experience at The Open Door was very pleasant, and I hope it does well in Sisters! It will be interesting to see how/if the menu changes as we move into the fall and winter months. A lot of the menu choices seemed to cater to a light and refreshing palate. Will they introduce soups or comfort foods when the weather gets colder? I guess we'll see! read more

This is a fantastic little gem, small but almost perfect for what it is. Food is interesting, delicious AND healthy, and beautifully plated. Beet salad was superb - candied pecans, dried cherries, a few greens; a wonderful balance of interesting flavors and textures, clear to the last bite. Sandwiches and paninis all a cut or three above the common herd, hard to choose. We decided on a fine toasted brie and turkey, delicately crisped and delicious. The kitchen here seems expert at the "little things" that make a good dish great. Service was warm, knowledgable and professional - welcoming but un-intrusive. Ambience is lovely too, a light-filled small space, fine art crowding the walls, interesting music. Large deck and garden space with sculpture for nice days. Amazing food and service, plus when we got stranded at the restaurant because there were no Lyft, Uber or Taxis available to take us back to the RV park we were staying at, the Owner drove us back. Talk about service that goes the extra mile, we cannot say enough good things about the place. Such nice people. The Gallery is also quite amazing. Highly recommend checking out this place. The Seafood Lasagna was to die for, as well as the salads, drinks and best bread basket ever with such high quality olive oil and balsamsic reduction. We ate at The Open Door twice recently. My first occasion was for a WONDERFUL dinner, complete with an excellent Duckhorn Merlot (personally suggested by owner Julia Rickards), and a sampling of wonderful desserts. We started with Roasted Brussel Sprouts. Now you've got to understand that I really dislike Brussel Sprouts. Really can't stand them. I'm opposed to them almost as much as I am Lima Beans. This lifelong conviction was about to change!! When Julia and her daughter Emily suggested Brussel Sprouts, I went in kicking and screaming. But, they were FANTASTIC! So much so, that we've even purchased Brussel Sprouts here at home, on purpose, and have cooked them like The Open Door did. I'm a new Brussel Sprouts fan, done up The Open Door way at least, and that credit is due The Open Door. Thank you! I then very much enjoyed the Greek Salad. You've got to try that! It's a fantastic blend of greens, cherry tomatoes, garbanzo beans, olives, feta cheese and other garden ingredients. The excellent vinaigrette, orange-infused if I recall, really tied everything together. Excellent. I had a daily special version of their House Lasagna. I was thrilled with the balance of ingredients and pasta layers. Sometimes in Lasagna, the pasta overtakes the ingredients or vice versa, but that definitely wasn't the case with this wonderful dish! Everything was perfectly prepared with careful attention to not overcooking the pasta. The serving size was perfect, the temperature well-calculated, and the result was a wonderful plate, perfectly blending its many complimentary flavors. In other words: it was AMAZING!!! Having had such a terrific experience for dinner, we went back for lunch the next day. I tried the Tuscan Panini, and was not disappointed! It was delicious and very unique! On sourdough bread, you'll find an ample serving of well-smoked chicken breast, along with tomato, avocado and spinach. It was topped off with my favorite Pepper Jack cheese, giving this tasty offering a little punch. I remember commenting that I wished I'd had two stomachs so I could have enjoyed TWO of these!!!! My wife and daughter went back a third time, after I had to depart for a business trip. But, I'll let them tell of that third excellent encounter! The attached Clearwater Art Gallery is filled with beautiful and varied art from a number of local artists, including Dan Rickards, co-owner of the gallery and the restaurant. Dan and Julia are the wonderful parents of Emily, whom you'll also find at the restaurant on many occasions! To top it all off, The Open Door has a philanthropic bent, and while we were there, they were actively supporting the Circle of Friends mentoring program for vulnerable kids. Adults in that program are very intentional about engaging early in kids lives, serving as positive role models, and remaining committed over the long haul to the success of each child in the program.
