Excellent service and great food. The owner works there and actively manages the restaurant. What a gracious lady! Everyone working there seemed dedicated to ensuring customer happiness and satisfaction. The weather was hot and the place was crowded, yet the staff moved with purpose and smiles. While there, we were hit rather suddenly with a surprise rainstorm, so the restaurant team scrambled to open umbrellas and move as many patrons inside as they could manage. We were impressed as they continued the business at hand without interruption in spite of the minor chaos created by the wind and rain. We were so happy do have dined there. We are still talking about The Open Door, and smiling as we relate our story. Everything that we had there was delicious. Fantastic place! We will return! read more

Went there for dinner, party of 6. I was the designated driver so I ordered a cran/oj. Despite the fact they have a bar, they don't have Cranberry, they offered Pomegranate instead. Horrible, but whatever. We ordered three apps, Bread, not complimentary, Brussels sprouts and Burrata. All very good. Took a while for the waitress to take our dinner order though. They have 6 entrees on the menu for Dinner. I ordered lasagna as did 2 others in our party. They are known for it, and I've had it there before, it's very good. For context, we are there at 5pm on a Saturday for this reservation made earlier in the week. Waitress comes back after taking our order and informs us they only have 1 order of lasagna in the house. 5pm Saturday night, signature dish. I switched to the pork chop and mashed potatoes, another switched to a seafood Lasagna which was a special. Thumbs down on the seafood lasagna my friend switched to. Pork chop was fine, didn't like the sauce they used on it and the mashed. We are not quite done eating dinner when the waitress comes to us and says, we have another reservation for this table at 7pm, which is in 15 minutes. Never offered coffee, never suggested dessert. The bill came, we split it even, 3 ways . We spent $450. If they had offered coffee, dessert, after dinner drink, the bill is $550 plus. So, as I'm scoring the experience, Drinks 2 stars, food 2 stars and service 2 stars. Chance of returning zero. They automatic charge a 20% gratuity on Parties of 6 or more. I always go over 20 percent but this is the first time in decades I haven't tipped at least 25%. read more

Don't know where to start first we had the most amazing waiter! Kallen was professional, super friendly and just made our dinner experience extra awesome. The food was off the charts from the beet salad to the spring salad with a curry dressing. The main course was off the charts. I had the sausage lasagna which was superb. My husband had the lemon fettuccine which was awesome as well. The ambiance is like something out of a story book. Comfortable, really nicely decorated inside and outside. An amazing ambience. Fantastic service. Wonderfully attentive staff. And, sort of mediocre food. But honestly - I still feel they deserves a solid four star rating. And, here is why - We went on a busy evening over the summer, and thought we could walk-in and get a table for four. Boy were we sorely mistaken. In fact, we have tried three separate times to eat at the open door, and each time we were thwarted by a full restaurant. This time, however, the host graciously helped us to find the space to wait for an available table. Ask if we wanted any starters and brought us a bottle of wine, and accommodated everyone of our wins. It was amazing. She was so delightful. The evening only got better when the server came over. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. I want to say our evening was great, but the food just wasn't that fantastic. It just wasn't knock your socks off. Like you'd expect from a place with so many other highly notable assets. And, in spite of making that statement I still feel the open door is a great place to go. The staff all on their own make it worthwhile. They have a nice selection of wines, not overly heavy on Oregon Pinot - but just enough. They have a good number of cocktails - but not overwhelmingly. A little crazy to see so many 4 and 5 stars. I can ONLY give them a 3 starts. Here is why, the most UNDERWHELMING Chipotle Turkey Club sandwich I have ever paid for!! I mean look at this picture. An eight year old could have made this at home and save my $13!!!! And Kettled chips, served right out of a commercially made bag!!! I was super disappointed. So why not lower stars? Because the smokey flatbread was ok, and the draft beers were refreshing, the setting was great and the service and all staff were super friendly and nice. We had the pleasure of visiting The Open Door the first night of our trip in Oregon. We sat outside on the patio which was quaint and as it grew darker the strung lights outside were a nice touch of ambiance. Service was personable and we really enjoyed talking to our server (I wish we could remember her name!) throughout our meal! Our meal started with a garden salad and bacon, potato, and leek soup which was a great way to start. the salad was fresh and the soup was silky and had wonderful flavor. For entrees we chose the halibut and the real star of the show, the seafood lasagna. The halibut was flavorful, but the potatoes were a little dry. The seafood lasagna on the other hand was moist, flavorful, and FULL of alfredo and shrimp, salmon, and scallops + the portion was HUGE. I'm still dreaming of it honestly. To finish we enjoyed the spiked berries that were warm and cooked down to almost a jam consistency and paired with creamy vanilla bean ice cream. This was the perfect way to end the meal, we were saying we wished we ordered our own instead of one to split! We cannot wait to be back for one of the best meals we enjoyed in Oregon! read more

Sadly I had high hopes for this restaurant. It is very popular and is always packed. We ate here a few years ago and the food was good and atmosphere very nice. Because we spoke highly of this place to friends, they gave us a generous gift card as a thank you for staying at our house. So decided tonight to go there.......bad decision...... First course was a dinner salad that comes with the meal. The salad was a wad of spring mix.....the kind you get in a plastic container at Safeway.....with nothing else to garnish it. No tomatoes, no cucumber, no cheese......except dressing. I asked for Ranch....no Ranch.....no other choice except a horseradish dressing. Blech..... I ordered the lemon alfredo pasta with chicken and spinach......bad choice.....the pasta was under cooked and the chicken was pre-cooked, chunks of bland chicken. The sauce was just ok. Olive Garden could do better. Why not use real chicken with some spices and grill it? It was awful..... My partner had the seafood lasagna, which he thought was good but I thought it had too much nutmeg. Dessert was a very small slice of flourless chocolate cake. It was just ok. Then the bill.......It had an added surcharge for "non-cash" payment. Hmmmmm......we pointed this out to the waiter.....we were paying with a gift card from their restaurant which is the same as cash....... Really? Restaurants are now tacking on a surcharge if you use a credit card? Will I go back there? Nope.....sorry......There are way too many restaurants in the area to waste money again at this one. Probably the best meal I've had in 20 years this weekend. The Dungeness Crab Bisque was so delicious, the only thing missing was salty ocean breezes. The seared Scallops in creamy corn sauce----the Scallops melted in my mouth and the corn sauce was so fresh I thought I was back in the Midwest summertime. The corn kernels delicate and sweet. Such a carefully crafted and deft hand in preparing this meal. I've eaten here for 12 years, and never been disappointed, but this meal was one of the best I've had from anywhere in the world. read more

Based on some of the reviews we read had tempered expectations going into this meal, and they were blown away! The food is excellent for the price; not at all expensive. The setting is unique and very charming-- a quaint interior inside a gallery and a nice outside seating area. Our server was very attentive. I ordered the seafood lasagna with a cup of soup; my partner ordered the pasta special with the soup. The soup arrived efficiently and was delicious; just the right amount as an appetizer. The pasta took a bit longer, but not an exorbitant amount (30-40 minute tops, I've waited much longer for meals). Nonetheless, the server comped us dessert before dinner had even arrived! The pasta was delicious; lots of seafood and not overwhelmed by the flavor of the sauce. My partner liked her dish as well: a sun-dried-tomato-pesto linguine. For dessert, we ordered the coconut custard pie and the flourless chocolate cake. The pie was very coconut heavy, so as a coconut lover I was a big fan. The chocolate cake was just about the most chocolate you could put in one piece of cake: incredibly moist and delicious and topped with homemade whipped cream and salted caramel sauce. So good my partner wanted to lick the plate! Though they were comped, we would've been happy to pay for them. We enjoyed a great lunch on the patio here. I visited with a group of 5, and coming at 11.30 we were seated right away. Tables are widely spaced and there is hand sanitizer available. Our meal started with a tasty signature cocktail, which sadly I don't remember the name of. It was served in a martini glass and was perfect for a gals lunch out. I grew up in Sisters and still come home regularly to visit my family. We always eat at least one meal at the Open Door when I come back to town! It's a favorite spot for us. What makes this place special though is the care that the owners put into community and the love with which they plan and prepare the meals. Supporting businesses like the Open Door supports the ecosystem of this small town. Recently my Mom was diagnosed with a serious illness, and the Open Door literally opened their doors to our family on a day they were normally closed to prepare a special meal for her and us. The hostess was running around like crazy and I wasn't sure why since it didn't look like there were that many tables. At first I thought that maybe this place is better with reservations (I didn't have any), but it seemed like the person in line ahead of me did have some and they got messed up. So since I was going to just order a salad )especially since the person in line gave them rave reviews), I was able to sit in one of the sofa areas with no additional wait. Service-wise, I now wish I waited for a table since I felt I was totally forgotten about, feeling like I was placed there as if I were a new garden fixture. I fortunately ordered what I wanted right as I sat down thinking it would arrive faster. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. Once it did arrive, I was a bit disappointed with the tenderloin part of the salad. It didn't seem like it was tenderloin since it was very difficult to cut. The rest of the salad was nice. My situation is likely a result of expectations not being met and am wondering if that is the missing link to all of the many other 5 star reviews. I saw other non-5 star reviews (looked for them after my visit there) where the writer felt guilty not providing 5 stars. Guess my thoughts there is you really should be honest about your experience, otherwise how would others get the whole picture? So in my opinion if you are looking for a place to hang out for awhile and enjoy the environment, then this is your perfect place. Answer 'No' Well you can sit in a hallway then at this table that was two feet square on high chairs that were the absolutely the worst chair I have ever sat on. Then they brought us tepid water. The first encounter with a staff member was a bright spot in our day being received by her joyous smile and enthusiasm to be sure we enjoyed our experience. This was augmented by a terrific outside dining area with lots of art and creativity surrounding us. With all great successful restaurants, the Open Door offered a perfect small menu with eclectic choices for every palette without drowning me in options. First note: get the mac and cheese!!! You will not regret it. I believe they change it every so often but the one we got was a spinach, sun dried tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, parmesan, and chunks of chicken. The flavors blended together so well! The yellowfin melt was superb. It's an open faced sandwich, crispy toasted bread and delicious melted cheese on top. If you're not a fan of mustard I'd stay away as the the mustard is very strong with this one. Boyfriend got the turkey sandwich and sandwich and said it was one of the best he has ever had. He hates mayonnaise. And he said there was something really good about the mayonnaise in his sandwich. Now that's saying something!
