Have been a customer for 30 plus years. Even delivered the paper when I was a kid in Anaheim. A few months ago I subscribed for the year paid in full. I subscribed to the Orange County Register, because they had a special promotion going on for their Sunday delivery. The Sunday paper includes coupons which I thought would make up for the minor cost of the subscription. When my subscription was up, there was no way to cancel online and I had to call them to cancel. Everything appeared to go smoothly and the person on the other end taking my call told me that my subscription was cancelled. I rarely keep my personal phone on me during working hours and usually check any messages on my personal phone after work. To my surprise a few days after cancelling my subscription I had 11 missed calls from a particular number in the 714 area code. No message was left. 2 days later there were 8 more missed calls from this same number. The pattern repeated a few more times. A quick search on google revealed to me that this particular number that was calling me multiple times in the day in the 714 area code and hanging up was from the OC Register. This is a really shady business practice! I recommend that everyone stay far and clear from the Orange County Register and their harassing phone calls. read more

They send out kids asking to be helped for college in exchange for a one time non recurring payment for online access to their content. This then becomes a monthly subscription which is a pain to cancel. I have called to cancel and the phone agents say they have cancelled but you keep seeing your credit cart billed. This is unprofessional behavior and my one thinking of subscribing to this awful paper should look elsewhere for news or any other outlet for charity. read more

I am very very disappointed. For ELEVEN WEEKS I have called the circulation dept regarding no delivery of my paper. For 11 weeks they have promised to extend my subscription and that they would bring me one out late. I have never received one paper. I donated $20 in cash to a student who said OC Register would give them a college grant. The newspaper took my information and subscribed me without my knowledge! What a horrible business practice! I don't even read newspapers and I now have overpaid dues also without my knowledge until a promoter called and told me. I tried to dispute the charge with customer service and they said they don't accept any disputes. In the end I had to pay the full amount through credit card but now I'm worried after seeing all the other one star reviews about not giving them credit info :(. I signed up for a 16 week for $1 trial that ended on 1/1/21 as confirmed by a representative when I called a few months ago. She told me to call them back before 1/1/21 and they can cancel or find a better rate. On 12/27/20, I see a charge of $65 had posted on my credit card and when I called, they said well you didn't cancel in time so we're charging you, and refunds are not allowed. WHAT?!? If you can't figure out how to deliver a paper over a 5-week period then you don't deserve my business! I had to call and tell them my dissatisfaction and formally tell them I wanted my subscription cancelled. I was told by the representative that the balance of my subscription would be credited to my credit card ...... No surprise, I'm still waiting for that to happen. Here's the kicker, I have received numerous calls from them wanting my business back. The number is in my spam folder so I don't have to hear my phone ring but I wish the Orange County Register would stop harassing me!! And the cherry on top of the cake that has already been burnt to a crisp is that when I try to go look for an Orange County Register in my neighborhood I can never find one at any location because they never stock enough papers. I don't mind the content of the newspaper, but the subscription is unreasonable. I'm a simple man. I want to pay a flat fee for a 1 year subscription of Sunday Only delivery. Only, they game the system by putting out "special editions" that are subtracted from your original balance at $5.95 per issue. If you got a deal for 1 year for $15, they'd hit you with 3 special editions, and then automatically renew your subscription for the full price. I realized this game, and opted out of the "special editions" when I renewed last year. In addition, they put in the fine print that you have to specifically "Opt Out" of your subscription or else they'll charge your credit card when your account balance reaches $0. I immediately opted out of the auto-renew. At that point, I should have had 1 year for the subscription cost, based on playing on their terms and opting out of everything. However, when my subscription ended, they continued delivering the newspaper and charging me. When they called to offer a new subscription, they required that I pay the "past due" balance of $9 in addition to the cost of the deal. I refused. I received follow up calls and they said they would remove the past due balance and I wouldn't have to pay it. So here I am, with a "Final Notice" for the "Past due" amount of $14.30. Do I pay it to make the problem go away? If I don't pay, will it go to collections? I'll never subscribe to the OC Register again. read more

I'm a huge advocate for a free press, and appreciate the role of quality, professional newspapers in our society. The OC Register misses the mark on quality and professionalism. Most pieces containing any serious journalistic content are usually from a third party provider - maybe a couple times a year, the paper will come out with an in-house investigative piece. Columns are written by staff that seem to lack any imagination and resort to repetitive language tools (Jonathan Lansner is a regular offender). Staff appears to be minimal so maybe that's part of the problem (as all newspapers face belt tightening). It seems like most columns are written by folks that like their "status" in the biz - not realizing how many of us cringe at the highschool level of journalism. Give me the Wallstreet Journal, LA/NY Times, etc. for interesting pieces covering the full spectrum of interests (political, sports, opinion, etc.) read more

I was on auto pay for my Sunday only delivery. I did not know they do not send a bill or an email or a text indicating they are renewing the subscription. So they took out $383.80 from my checking account without my knowledge. When I contacted them, they said they do not give refunds and basically I'm out of luck. This company is a scam. A high school student came to my home one day asking for a donation to his college education by making a one time payment to 'LA times'. I wanted to donate to the student, but don't want to get into some monthly subscription scam so I didn't provide credit card info, but instead gave him a check. Next thing I know, my bank account starts getting monthly charges from this "Orange County Register". I called my bank to block this monthly payment to Orange County Register. But the next month, I still get charged, because the Orange County Register changed their Merchant ID to circumvent the block. In the end, I terminated my bank account. So pathetic. read more

Won't cancel when you request it. My father has been dead since early April, before that he was in hospice for a week and in the hospital for the week before that. He is the only one who ever read the paper. We have talked to three different reps requesting that they cancel the paper and we still get billed and we still get the paper, but since their delivery sucks we only get about 3 a week actually delivered. Right now those three are acting as trashcan filler. Got another bill today, but they were closed before I could call, must be nice. Their hours I am either asleep or at work. Month after month I requested a cancellation in early 2022 - finally in May or June I got to a rep who said he would cancel it and put me on a non auto payment renewal to my CC. I then subscribed to the LA Times for 7 day print and online for less than the online register! It did not bill to my credit card but I got weekly calls to set up billing a a special rate - I would always say I am not active I cancelled in June and they would hang up. Please do NOT ever give them your credit card number or any payment information. They will continue to charge it even if you cancel it over and over. They just charged me $234 for a year's subscription after I had repeatedly cancelled it and you can't talk to anyone in billing. For the 3rd time in the last 30 days, the delivery guy left the paper in the gutter which is constantly wet from sprinkler run off. Does the delivery guy think we're too lax to not care? Not at $77 a month. So now I have to go down to the 7-11 to get a newspaper. Based on other yelp reviews, no one at the OCR will care. I think the guy must drive to his customers, and try to flip the paper over his roof and lands where it may. He must've flunked PE because his aim is lousy. Either that or his morning beer was still in effect. Why doesn't at least look and see if he gave me a wet paper, then replace it right there if it's wet? Horrible. Will probably cancel. We have been subscribing to the Orange County register for days a week (Thursday through Sunday). Our delivery has been spotty at best I called last week to request a paper the situation was elevated to a supervisor but still no paper that day. Today once again I have no paper. I called to speak with customer service who again elevated to a supervisor and as of yet no paper once again. My nephew was interviewed and featured on the front page of OCR , the only reason I subscribed was to read the article about someone I care about. Now I come check the online version and I feel like I'm in the twilight zone. Several times at end of a front page story the OCR suggests other articles to read. One of those suggested article is "Kobe Bryant settles with maid who worked in Newport Hone". I mean there's so many newsworthy stories in 2020, other than Covid or HB. I called the middle of July to complain, then yesterday again via the automated service (which never called back) and then again today...when I cancelled my service. I asked to be refunded for the weeks I didn't receive a paper and the guy on the phone said, "Oh, we don't do that" and basically accused me of not calling enough to complain...I guess I was supposed to call every Monday. I have subscribed to the OC Register since moving to Orange County almost 10 years ago. At first they were a breath of fresh air after reading the LA Times for years, but they have deteriorated into just using articles they buy from AP and other left leaning sources. I get the Thurs thru Sunday papers. I guess since I don't get the daily subscription my carrier often forgets to deliver my paper. When I call I get the automated voice that acknowledges my complaint and says a replacement is enroute. The replacement NEVER comes...When I'm paying about $2.50 PER PAPER this kind of non-customer service is unacceptable. I am seriously considering canceling my subscription. While it's nice to have access to local news, the paper is shrinking and content seems to be mostly from the NY Times and the Associated Press. Anyone who gets critical thinking can easily pick up on the manipulative language in these articles. It truly has become one-sided propaganda. The automatic subscription obscures the extremely high rate being charged for this publication. I get that they have high overhead, but the rates are outrageous. If I weren't sending my grandson the comics page, I would cancel. Service is usually reliable, but the two times I have called because the newspaper was missing a section, I have been assured that a correct copy would be delivered within 90 minutes. Beware of the "Special Editions". I like the OC Register as a newspaper, but score it 2 stars because of their deceptive business practices. I cancelled my daily subscription a couple of years ago because their pricing was getting outrageous and I didn't have time to read the paper each day. I was called a few weeks after cancelling for a reasonably priced offer for Sunday only delivery and daily access to the e-Edition. I prefer the e-Edition so I went ahead and signed up. Two years later I have never received a Sunday paper, but am not concerned because I do prefer the e-Edition. When it came time to renew this year, I got the statement in June. It seemed earlier than usual and went I looked back to last year's payment, sure enough my renewal is normally in August. When I called to ask about it, they said it was because I had not "Opted Out" of the special editions. What the heck are those? Supposedly they are an occasional supplement to the normal paper that they charge extra for. And the cost of them over the past year ate up 2 months of my prepaid subscription. There is some fine print on the renewal invoice I received, but it does not specifically say how much the cost is for a special edition...only that the subscription term will be shortened if a special edition is published in the term. To me, this is a sketchy business practice. If they want to produce a special edition, it should just be included in the subscription fee. I wonder how many people have gotten their invoice with a couple of months shaved off of their yearly term and not realized it....I guess that's the idea. read more

I used to love the OC Register, but unfortunately this company is done. They are doing a new scam. A lady called from their retention telling me I had a balance of $10.51. I asked how there was a balance after I had cancelled subscription last year. She kept telling me should could work out a "deal" with remaining balance. I hung up and called their billing department and the agreed there was a balance, but it was a mistake and it would be wiped clean. I am going to be reporting this as fraud. read more
