Voodoo Penne

The service here is hit or miss, the food takes awhile to come out. The salmon ceviche barely has salmon. The voodoo penne is my favorite pasta dish ever. I am a very big fan of the breading on the calamari as well. The margarita flatbread is perfect to me. The crepe is very fresh.

I've been to Caffe Boa at least 5 times, and it's never disappointed. I have had their salmon salad, crepes, shareable board, and more. They were all delicious! I appreciate that their portions are not humongous, so I can explore Tempe afterwards without lugging around a doggy bag. The servers are super professional. They have accommodated our requests without any issues. The service is not the quickest, but that is okay because the food is super fresh, presentable, and yummy. The environment is pretty laid back. It's not informal like a sports bar, but it's not formal that it requires jackets. It's classy for a brunch with friends or a cute date. For a fun weekday date, they offer live music Monday nights.

Butternut Squash Ravioli dish - A-

The charcuterie board options are great. Pretty restaurant. We were blessed with beautiful weather so we sat outside. Our server was very nice & helpful. I got the butternut ravioli dish. It had good flavor and I would order it again. My husband got the lasagna and he wasn't quite as impressed. He said it lacked flavor. It looked delicious, but he struggled to finish it.

Still one of the best restauraunts in Tempe. The Coniglio is a must-try always. Huge portion and homemade!!!

Excellent food, strong wine & cocktail program, real potential... Largely positive experience at Caffe Boa Tempe. The food is genuinely excellent (house-made pasta and sauces, thoughtful sourcing, beautifully plated). Craft cocktails are inventive, and the wine list is extensive with a focus on cleaner selections. The space is warm and inviting, with free Wi-Fi and some power access in the back, giving it potential as a strong third-place gathering spot. A few service flow and accessibility details could be refined, but the foundation is solid. We came to Cafe Boa for a weekday lunch, and unfortunately, it was a pretty underwhelming experience from start to finish. While the restaurant has a nice layout and the patio seating was pleasant thanks to great weather, the positives ended there. The food was mediocre at best. My Bianco Flatbread was bland and overly oily--there was barely any flavor to it. I also tried the Reuben, which had potential, but the sauce made the bread so soggy it fell apart in my hands. The antipasti platter was fine, but it's hard to mess up a plate of cured meats and cheeses. The biggest issue, though, was the service--it was incredibly slow and inattentive. We waited far too long for everything, and our waters sat empty for most of the meal. What should have been a quick one-hour lunch turned into a two-hour ordeal, which was frustrating since we were on a work break. To top it off, a table near us actually got up and left after no one came to take their order. Maybe dinner service is better, but based on this experience, I wouldn't recommend Cafe Boa for lunch. We expected much more.

Our reservation mix-up had us seated outside in the Arizona summer, but luckily it wasn't too hot--and we had the best waitress, Ava. She made the night fun and memorable. Her recommendation of the Antonino Street Corn was spot on, and the mains (Ossobuco, Coniglio, Ravioli Zucca, Voodoo Penne) were excellent. We ended with the amazing Zucca Gelato. Ava's great service turned a warm evening into a wonderful dining experience.

Haboob cocktail and beer - Dec 2024

Service was great, we made a reservation for dinner and were seated promptly inside. We got two pastas, 1) fettuccine Bianca with adding the wild Alaskan salmon ($34) and 2) voodoo penne blackened chicken with Cajun cream ($23). We got two drinks and the special sausage perogis as an appetizer ($24). They charged a 2% credit card fee which was not communicated to us that was strange but we paid it. 3.5 stars, overall the food was too expensive and drinks were average. I got the Haboob and it came without a straw so my first sip was all bitters. Asking for a straw helped but it was too sweet for me. My pasta was delicious, noodles were delicate for the fettuccini but the value fell short. The had other items menus that sounded intriguing (rabbit, ossobucco) that we wanted to try too but came for a pasta craving. The perogis really missed the mark for us and were not worth the $24. They have indoor and outdoor dining and some metered parking outside.

Gnocchi Fricassee

Went the Caffe Boa for a girls night. The ambiance did not disappoint - the perfect mix of fancy and relaxed. We wanted to dress up and go somewhere cute and this was the perfect place for that. We sat on the patio but the inside looked just as cute. Our server was very friendly and very knowledgeable on the menu. I ordered the gnocchi dish with mushrooms and a sauce (I forgot the name oops). The gnocchi itself was amazing and had the best texture. The sauce was a little salty for me, but I still ate the entire meal so the saltiness did not deter me. We had the crepes and espresso mocha torta for dessert. Crepes were my personal favorite. Amazing prices too. I spent about $45-$50 for my meal, a coke, and splitting two desserts. Would recommend!

You had me at Chimay on tap!!

Tucked away in a small inlet of businesses right off Mill Avenue. The ambiance is old luxury with a slight modern vibe. We arrived right in mid-afternoon on the weekend. The dining room was surprisingly empty. We headed to the bar where another couple were enjoying libations and conversation with one of the bartenders. Another bartender was prepping for the next service and while we made eye contact, neither staff member made an immediate effort to approach us. Upon finally being greeted, we ordered a cocktail - delicious - and a Chimay on draft! Presentation of the Cucumbersome was fitting for the atmosphere and Chimay on tap is a HUGE plus! Definitely worth returning, or so we thought at that moment. As we were waiting for other folks to partake in an event nearby, we asked for our check promptly so as to not have to wait to get the staff attention as they were in the midst of prepping. I provided my credit card and waited for the receipt to tip and pay. That's when the surprise came in... Not previously disclosed, there was an additional 2% "credit card" fee added to the final bill. If I can afford to pay $15+ for a cocktail and around $12 for a pint of beer, an additional 2% isn't an issue. The hidden way it was charged was revolting. And I hate being nickel-and-dimed! Just add a freaking $0.50 or $1 to each drink and include it as an expense! The majority of folks will pay by CC. You are just aggravating us. Turned off enough that I will never recommend the business or return.

This place was fantastic and so cute. The environment felt upscale without being too much. We had lunch here the weekend of the iron man. We sat outside and played carts. Our waiter was 10/10. Attentive and lots of personality. I got the bruschetta at lunch and I order 3 of the normal tomato bruschettas. He said he went ahead and put it in as a dinner bruschetta because I would get more for the same price. So nice! My boyfriend got the lasagna. It looked really weird because it was orange but he really liked it and would recommend it.

Just a short walk from the Mill Ave. stop on the light rail, step inside CAFFE BOA (est. 1994) and be transported to a world of simple elegance: a spring of rosemary nestles in with your silverware, and fresh flowers look like they are posing for a still life in the restroom.Treat yourself to an elegant lunch with unique menu items like the butter lettuce salad or a pasta dish made with pasta made fresh daily. Here's an ex: Coniglio made with Nicky Farms free range and slow roasted rabbit, foraged mushrooms, thyme, and pecorino. Perfect. Just perfect. An attentive and informative server completed my mini vacation away from the ordinary so I left satisfied and refreshed. A chalkboard announced there is live jazz on Mondays from 6-9, but call to check for that and other possible performances.

It's the kind of restaurant that makes getting dressed up feel exciting and worth it, and I absolutely loved that about the experience. It felt like such a perfect date night spot or place to celebrate something special. The servers were also extremely attentive the entire night. Everyone was friendly, professional, and made sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling overbearing. The service honestly matched the upscale atmosphere perfectly and made the whole experience feel even more polished. And OMG... the food. SO SO SO SO SO GOOD. Like genuinely one of those meals where every single bite makes you pause for a second because it tastes that incredible. I got the chicken orzo along with the lime icebox cake for dessert, and both were absolutely amazingggg. The chicken orzo was phenomenal. The lemon flavor throughout the orzo was bright, fresh, and flavorful without being overpowering, and the tomatoes were the PERFECT addition because they balanced everything so well and added a little sweetness and freshness to the dish. But the chicken... wow. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside while still being super juicy and tender inside, which is honestly hard to do. Every component of the dish worked together perfectly. Magnificent is genuinely the best word for it. And the lime icebox cake was the perfect ending to the meal, refreshing, creamy, flavorful, and not too heavy after dinner. Honestly, I'm sitting here craving the food again just looking back at the pictures I took. This is definitely one of those restaurants that sticks in your mind long after you leave.

The restaurant itself is very cute and clearly designed for photos, which matches what I saw on their Instagram. Service overall was fantastic. The food, however, was just okay. I ordered the burrata and fig plate and was told they'd replace the bread with apple slices. I received five very small slices of apple, and when the plate was set down the waitress said she'd get more if needed. I later noticed I was charged $2 for an additional five slices, which together didn't even amount to half an apple. Ironically, the bread that comes with the dish would have been far more substantial. The burrata was fine, but nothing memorable. My friend ordered the chicken and brussels sprouts and didn't even finish it before having the plate taken away. The flourless almond cake was the star, a bit salty on its own, but with the ice cream and whipped cream it was a delightful combo which were the highlight. Overall, this is a great spot for cocktails, ambiance, and photos, but the food is fairly mediocre compared to the setting.

Hubby ordered rigatoni with Bolognese and steak meatballs. I didn't taste it, but he really liked it. My son ordered Caccio e Pepe pappardelle. I tasted it and it was very yummy. I had the meatball ferris wheel which is literally a little ferris wheel with little bowls with a different kind of meatball in each. The Ferris wheel ended up just making it harder to eat, but I do think the novelty of it is cute. That said, I was super disappointed. I liked the steak meatball pretty well and the arabbiata was yummy, but the rest were mediocre for me. I love meatballs but, honestly, I've had meatballs that I like better elsewhere. My bread was also over-toasted, making it kind of like a hard crumbly rock. Our server was very nice and quite friendly, but both my husband and I noticed that she actually boxed the food at the two tables near us for those people, but for us, just just dropped off boxes and a bag at our table and left us to do it ourselves. I don't mind doing it myself, but what made us different from the other tables? All in all it was good. The pasta was fresh and perfectly cooked and sooo good and the Saganaki was also delish. The meatballs, not so much for me.

The pizza was as good as any Neapolitan-style pizza in town, including that dude named "Chris". The arancini was slightly over-fried, but I actually dug the crunch. Salad, fresh. We were seated and immediately after sitting down I literally couldn't hear anything anyone was saying at my table. Most the customers were crammed into the front right room and it was impossible to hear anyone at my table with loud women surrounding us enjoying lunch (which is fine) but break up the crowd a little.. I immediately stood up and asked to be moved so we could atleast hear each other. The young teen who Sat us was very helpful and moved us to a different table in the back right. When I tried to order the appetizer, I said "Yes, (looking at the waitress) we'd like to split a Caprese ( glances at my daughter to confirm in a questioning voice hesitating at the end) The waitresses said, "ok, I'll come back in a few when you figure it out" obviously not willing to wait a few seconds for a confirmation. We just sat there going Wow?!? That was wild, we also had our pizza orders ready but ended up waiting till she wandered back our way. The entire time we felt like we were keeping her from her kids? Grandkids? We definitely put her out, drinks were not offered beyond the first, I had to ask for a second one. The pizzas came, but not mine. I was informed it was wrong and they had to remake it. After my pizza finally came I realized it was still rather doughy and undercooked. We moved on as my daughters were done eating thier pizza and one of them grabbed boxes and we boxed them and waited to order crepes. We finally got our crepes and mine didn't look gf and was missing the allergy flag. We waited a few and I finally got up and went to the front room, the 2 teen girls (servers? They were serving) were messing around in the front room and almost ran into me when I FINALLY went up front to say My food had been messed up after it was dropped, no one checked back. They kept messing around and then stopped and looked at me asking if I needed help. I said YES please. She went into the side room to the front left and the waitress got up from the table where she was sitting with the other kids (that were at the drink fountain when we'd walked in.) She asked what she could help me with... I told her my gf pizza was not cooked all the way; I'd thrown it into a box (that we'd actually went to get) and I'll reheat it properly later and eat it, but the crepe I was concerned as there was not an allergy flag and it looked JUST like my daughters texture wise. I'm familiar with the crepes and I REALLY didn't think it was gf. She said she would not do anything about the pizza since I didn't mention it prior but the crepe was indeed gluten free. A little stunned I again said I would take the pizza home and reheat, I didn't ask for anything in regards to the pizza as they reheat well... and I would not eat the crepe, I truly didn't think it was gf! She said they'd remake it. I replied no thank you. (I'd already sat once while my party ate, for the gf pizza to be remade... I wasn't doing that again. With an attitude she told me she'd remove it from the bill! One bite was cut out and STILL on the fork, it should but have been an issue. I love Cibo and the food is amazing and it's worth the drive to come from Surprise for a treat, but that was a bit much...I'll be back, but I'll definitely ask for a different server!

The ambiance was very similar to restaurants back in Milano, noisy because people were chatting and having a good time.
