Palmdale was our first pit stop on our way home from Kernville. Located close to HWY 14 and good sized parking lot. Not a super huge dining area but not tiny either. Plenty of booths and some two tops that can accommodate parties more than 4 people. We walked in and were instantly greeted by Irma at the counter. As she pointed out available booths, she gave us the rundown on breakfast specials (that are also written on the grease board). Besides a hot cup o' Joe- I wanted some light bites. My typical breakfast plates would consist of Country Fried Steak/ Corned Beef Hash/ or Steak & Eggs. This time- when I heard Irma mention Beef Barley soup, I thought a cup would suffice. Along with that- sides of crispy bacon (I think 5 strips came in that order) & an English muffin. Which was toasted to perfection. Once I took my first spoonful of the Beef Barley soup- I knew I was gonna order an entire bowl. The strips of beef had some of the tasty gristle that truly makes the broth. Simple hearty soup. No shortage of barley and beef. I haven't had this soup in so long, it brought me back to childhood. I couldn't stop raving about it, (I'm a gal of simple pleasures) to other patrons. Hubby's breakfast combo came with a huge portion of hash browns. I told him to pack it up in a To Go container w/ the remaining bacon. And the hash browns were just as buttery & delicious when I re heated them in my skillet later the following day. Irma kept checking on us and would chit chat here and there. I came for a very early dinner and I told my server Brittney that I would like to try the meatloaf Ala cart with gravey and a cup of the spicey creamy potato and sausage soup. It's sounds like a crazy mix for dinner but it was an excellent choice. Both the items were outstanding in taste. I did make sure word got back to the cook that they did a great job! I was asked by my server Brittney if I was up for dessert today since I wolfed down my dinner and I told her in 20 minutes I'll be able to enjoy a piece of apple pie. That's always great! The meal was good: typical "diner food," nothing special about how it was seasoned; good, but not "unique." My wife and I shared a biscuit with country gravy, my favorite part of the meal! The decor (like Karen's Kitchen 2) is very monotone: grays and blacks with bits of blue. It makes the restaurant feel dull. It's nicely painted, but...dull. The wait staff were fast, efficient, and pleasant, checking on people regularly and making sure coffees were topped off. Service was good, coffee was great. I ordered the chilaquiles plate and I can tell the beans are from a can, and the salsa on the tortilla chips are also canned. My husband got the machaca plate and it was better but his beans were also canned. The portion is huge but for canned food it's definitely overpriced, we aren't locals but come to the desert often to visit family, I think we will be trying another place next time. read more

I do give this restaurant 1 star because I have no other option but the food was decent but I do suggest getting your hashbrowns extra extra well done if you go there. in order to have The traditional hashbrowns that you crave. The biscuits and gravy was also very good but seemed like a challenge to get it. My friend actually gave up and got a burrito after trying to order 3 different other items in the classic breakfast section of the menu that is apparently supposed to include b&g and hashbrowns and "Karen" said they're not include. They gave me my side of b&g without question the waitress was not attentive, very rude and tossed the silverware at us!!! It was such a surreal (Karen) experience. Shoot it couldn't even be mad! So here we are again. Quality and best practices just are not being upheld here. I had eggs, bacon, toast buttered, fries (well done). When it made it to the table, eggs were near cold, fries were cold and soggy. She had the chicken and waffles. I sent it back, fries came back with half of them crispy and the others the same way they originally came to the table. Eggs still cold. Toast was buttered and the buttered sides were back to back so that both sides were now buttered, as well as my fingers. Bacon was past crisp. Waffles are really thick and doughy, no crisp to it. She liked the chicken. So is the issue, The kitchen (if this is the original kitchen, maybe it needs an update). Is it the servers being overtaxed or poorly trained?
