This is one of my favorite restaurants in Bethlehem. The sushi is consistently delicious, but for me, the ramen is the absolute best. It's the kind of dish that's so great you think about it for days after you have it. As other reviewers have mentioned, the restaurant is small. I don't know that you could be over 6 foot tall and be comfortable eating in (but there's always take out). However, the service is great, and the food is great, and the ambiance is funky. After dining there about 5 times, I have no complaints, and I highly suggest giving it a try. read more

This place is the dive bar of Bethlehem sushi. It's awesome but you got to be ready for it. The place is small and part of their outdoor seating is a picnic table falling apart in the parking lot. As I said, it's a dive but I dug it. I dug it all. Everything from the seemingly thrown together rolls to the heavily mustachioed waiter named Yuri. The place has a certain craziness that is appreciated in a place as tame as Bethlehem. Everyone at this joint is a character and the lax behavior is a welcome change from the harshness of typical sushi restaurants. The sushi is good. The fish was fresh and certainly as good as I imagine it gets so far inland. I'm not too big on rolls usually, as I like to focus on the flavor of the fish and not on the rice or the sauces or whatever, but the rolls here were nuts. Whoever created this menu is some sort of crazy and I like that. So, I broke out of my habit and ordered some rolls on top of my sushi and loved it. These reviews are hilarious... Man, Bethlehem, y'all be trippin'. I live in California with sushi places closer to my house than I can spit watermelon seeds. Yeah, the sushi is cheaper and the floor plans are more open, but out here you can't find any place quite like The Other Fish. The staff is really fun to talk to, and Matt goes through some lengths to bring fresh fish to the valley - quite a feat when the shore is far away. Anyway, I wasn't too much of a roll person until I came here, but the rolls they put together here have turned me. The special at the time, the shogun roll, included shiitake mushrooms, which I'd never encountered in a roll before. Pretty delicious discovery. There's a ton of different rolls on the menu, and if you happen to dream something up they don't have down on paper, I'm pretty sure they could roll it up for you. Just don't get crazy. Or do, whatever. They might not serve alcohol, but there's nothing stopping you from getting drunk off your own! BYOB, eat some good food, and have fun. That's what it's really all about. read more

I'm not sure why people are so harsh about this place. I'm from California, and lived in LA for a while, and I still think this is a good sushi joint! There are a couple rolls that I adore, including the Rainbow Roll and the Dragon Roll. However, they have a specialty roll that I've never had any where else, and it has this amazing sauce on it. If you're a sushi purist, you'll probably roll your eyes and give a big sigh, but if you're just a person who loves sushi and ALSO loves yummy tasting food, then you're not going to stop yourself from enjoying the "Wayno" roll.... it's super delicious and really spicy. It's a small little restaurant, so yeah, deal with it! They can't do anything about that, since they're limited with the space they have. They're fun and the food is fresh. I've eaten there more than any other place in Bethlehem, and with my sensitive tummy, I'm happy to say that I've never had any issues. I've tried a few other sushi restaurants in the Lehigh Valley and haven't been able to say the same. Went in here with a big restaurant.com coupon for two people (needed to spend $100+) and it didn't disappoint. George W.'s review is spot on- you have to understand what this place isn't. If you try to get a pot of tea, they'll give you a mug with a steeper bag. It makes up for it with a fun staff, excellent chef, and quality food. It's a local gem for a good bite and a nice cut of sashimi. I only eat rolls once or twice a year but filled up on them here because they were so good. Go for it. read more

The other fish is a sweet spot to go to for a unique atmosphere. I loved the staff and the food! We both got ramen- took about 20-25 minutes after we ordered for our food to come out and gave us time to chat and not feel rushed. My only concern is that the space is a little tight. Honestly, everyone that has written a review on this place has knocked it as "indie" or "pretentious". They then go on to say that no one in the Lehigh Valley knows food. I'm sure these are the same people who drive an hour to Philly or NYC to get "real" food. Now THAT is pretentious! I admit the place is pretty cramped but in the summer there is some nice outdoor seating. The sushi is very good and has been rated pretty well in local publications. I talked to the owner and he gets fresh fish in everyday from Japan. My favorite dish of the restaurant is the Kamikaze Chicken. It's an appetizer and it's a nice spicy chicken with a spicy mayo sauce. Try the dumplings too!! I've been to other sushi places in the area and I think this is the best. It's important to understand what The Other Fish is and what it is not. It is, as another reviewer succinctly put it, "the dive bar of Bethlehem sushi." The food is great. The staff is friendly and the seating is tight. Real tight. The sushi is also a bit on the pricey side (but all good sushi should be if it's fresh.) The decor is what you would expect to find in a "sushi dive bar" (namely, some local type art on the walls, a few shelves haphazardly full of kitchen items). However, that's part of the charm of the place and they make no qualms about it. If you're expecting a roomy, five star quiet evening, you won't find it here. If you're expecting a very interesting meal, lots of talking going on and cramped space, then you've got it. Just be honest when you go and don't expect something that it isn't. This place makes the best sushi in the valley! The seaweed salad and dumplings are also to die for! Actually, I have never had something that I haven't loved from here. The miso soup and ginger salad are the best I've ever had as well! My favorite roll is the shamus roll, which is a roll on special some times (may be on the menu by now) Ask for it! its amazing! I agree with Eva. I'm from San Diego, and this is on par with a lot of the places back home. Sushi is super fresh, really delicious and well priced. They have good specials and if you go on Restaurant.com, you can get a good deal. Definitely a dive and very small, but clean and the staff is very friendly, knowledgable and easy-going. The coolest thing about this place is that you can make/adjust any roll you want. Most places have their set rolls/specials, but you can add/subtract anything you want. Reasonably priced for the Bethlehem area. Definitely give it a try, one of the best sushi places in the Lehigh Valley. read more

Yes, it's small and cramped. No, it's not going to win any decor awards. But, the food is excellent and the staff is comprised of a few fun characters. Those claiming the sushi is bad (not as good as Wegman's... come on!) obviously don't know good sushi from bad. Bring a couple Sapporo's (yes, BYOB), have a Seamus Roll and enjoy an unpretentious & tasty meal at a fair price. They do a nice job with take-out as well. read more

Amazing sushi...try the Zoe roll. Other entrees such as the kamikaze chicken are excellent as well. The ginger dressing on the salad is to die for. As said in previous posts, it won't win any design awards, but that's what I love about this place. Its unpretentious, laid back vibe is one of the reasons I keep coming back to the Other Fish. This was absolutely amazing. We're in from out of town (WV) and try to eat sushi wherever we go. It was probably the best we've had anywhere. My husband and I had 4 rolls, and two appetizers and it was only $60 also, which is very cheap for high quality sushi. Waiter was fantastic, atmosphere is incredibly comfortable, and the music didn't suck. Definitely recommend!! read more

I have lived in Japan and I have returned there on numerous occasions. In fact, I was just there this month and I will be living there all summer. I say this because I feel qualified to review this sushi restaurant. I highly recommend this delightful sushi bar. I find the food to be very authentic in taste and I also appreciate the unique rolls on the menu. I wonder where else these scathing reviewers are dining out. Is there some amazing Japanese restaurant hidden in the Lehigh Valley that I am unaware of? I don't get a pretentious "indie" vibe when dining at The Other Fish. They have a great selection of fish and all types of rolls, including their own specials to choose from. It's BYOB and there's a store nearby to buy drinks if you didn't bring your own from home. My favorite hidden gem in Bethlehem! The Other Fish has never failed as my go-to sushi and ramen spot. The specialty rolls are to die for and all their sushi is fresh and delicious. My absolute favorite meal is the ramen noodle bowl. The bowls may seem pricey, but you get a very large portion. Although I normally order take out, the intimate vibe of this small restaurant makes it a perfect date night spot. I have been here only once and let me tell you I am itching to go back. While the place is small and a little cramped doesn't mean they can't put out great food and service. The service was phenomenal. The guy was super nice and comedic which made me feel more relaxed and welcomed to this little "hobbit house." (Granted I am 6'5" so it might seem smaller than it actually is). The feel and ambiance of the place was really laid back and had a nice older college type feel. Let's get to the food. Amazing, spectacular, fantastic. I ordered two sushi rolls whose names I cannot for the life of me remember. I believe one of them was the kill bill. They were rolled perfectly, great flavor and great portion sizes. Even though their menu is quite cumbersome, once you get the hang of how to peruse the menu it becomes quite simple. Their ingredients taste delightfully fresh and makes you want to face the fear of mercury poison by devouring as much sushi as possible. Two things that I truly love about this place is that it is byob friendly and its adaptable. They encourage you to bring in alcohol and have yourself a good time. The server even suggested a place two stores down if we wanted to grab some beers with our dinner. They also allow you to change and adapt any roll you want. So if you detest cream cheese on your sushi like I do, just request not to have it. Or be creative and crest you own rolls like I am tempted to do. Overall, this place is a jewel. Going up a star thanks to the terrific udon soup I had tonight. Great value and a great meal. Shrimp, scallops, sweet mushrooms, one egg and loads of noodles and scallions made it a great dish. . I may not be ordering it this summer but it fit the bill on a chilly spring evening. Well done. Fresh tuna sashimi for an appetizer also hit the spot. My excitement to eat here quickly subsided when I walked inside. The decor was boring and felt much more like a fish n chips place than a sushi restaurant. The music playing reminded me of high school circa 1999 - and the cool dude behind the counter singing along paid us no mind. Some time after ordering a scruffy guy appeared from no where, said nothing, didn't look up, slapped some rolls together and handed them to us. I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED. It felt like zero of the people working gave any f**ks about our presence. It's really hard to pay that kind of money when you feel like you're invisible to the crew. Especially when you're THE ONLY CUSTOMERS! (lol) I absolutely hate mayonnaise. In the last ten years I've found many more sushi restaurants use crab salad with mayo now, instead of lump crabmeat. I scowered the menu carefully for rolls without mayo and ordered accordingly - unfortunately they both had mayonnaise when they came out. I tried to eat it, but there wasn't just a bit of mayo to hold it together, there was A LOT of mayo. Sigh. With the staff's demeanor I decided I'd rather just bounce and never come back, instead of asking them to make it again. My date and I walked down the street to the Brew Works and had a much better atmosphere and food/drinks. It was OK. I went with my boyfriend because we had a coupon, basically 15$ off our meal. The place was really cool looking, awesome music and it felt more like you were in a friendship with the people who worked there. It is very tiny, most of the seating near the sushi bar. It was cool to see the chef cook your meal. The employees are more of your friends, so they joke around, go on their phones and talk to each other constantly. They are very close to you all the time due to the small space. They were really friendly and going on a not busy night (right when the opened) service was good. The problems started with the fact it wasn't a typical eat in joint. You can see the chef cook right in front of you. It is definitely a place based on younger people. The music, the style and the food is all for the younger crowd except they close at an early hour. So this was very confusing, especially if you want to go out drinking or get food delivered at a later hour. The food was nothing to brag about, actually one of the worst sushi places I have eaten at in the valley. The only roll worth talking about was a half tuna half salmon deep fried roll which was fried well. The fish (in opinion) did not taste fresh, (maybe I went on a bad day?) We also shared a teriyaki chicken, watching the chef cook it was cool and veggies were yummy but the chicken was dry. He cooked it almost poaching the chicken causing it to dry out plus it wasn't on a sizzling platter which is the only time I ever been to a sushi place where that has happened. They don't have a large menu mostly sushi, a little over priced compared to the sushi places I've been to. It was cool to go just to check it out, listen to sweet music and enjoy the scenery but nothing I would go out of my way for, especially if I didn't have a coupon. I do recommend to try it to base your own opinion! Just make sure to go early, or maybe get delivery especially if you have more than two people going (They only have one large table). read more

Great sushi here. The specialty rolls are excellent, although very expensive in my opinion. It's easy to get carried away when ordering. The restaurant space is very small, only a few tables. If you are lucky enough to get a seat, it's worth it. It is a very old building, so it may not look the cleanest. Fairly solid sushi place near downtown Bethlehem. I ordered a shrimp tempura roll and chicken katzu for lunch the other day. The katzu was pretty good - though a bit much for a lunch potion. Not sure if they distinguish between lunch and dinner portions since I haven't been there for dinner. I will have to say that I was disappointed that they didn't have a bento box option for lunch. Those are always my favorite. That's what I went in there with the intention of buying. I will go back there. Their food is solid, simple, and tasty. My body craves chicken katzu every now and then...and I can't stop thinking about it until that delicious panko breaded chicken hits my lips. MMMMMMMMM! NOT good for groups - they only have one large table up front...and the DON'T accept reservations. Kind of a pain. So let's start with the good- tons of atmosphere, totally divey as described, outside seating was nice until it started drizzling aggressively and there was no umbrella at our table. The server was terrific, very friendly enthusiastic, and knowledgeable but clearly running off his feet working the full inside seating area and the outside. The house made ginger dressing is possibly the best I've ever had. My friend and I shared the crab wontons and they were 90% cream cheese, fried. Just bleh. We each ordered two rolls, mine came out after 25 minutes, hers after 35 minutes. The fish itself was ok, really seemed like if you didn't order something spicy the flavor was lacking. We asked for a reference for dessert and got one but alas that was worse than the dinner had been. If I go back, I'll sit at the bar inside to get quicker service and order sashimi. I really enjoy The Other Fish and have been here many times. It is the only sushi place I have ever encountered that I would consider to be a "hole in the wall". The setup is bizarre but they ran with it and the result is a really unique atmosphere. All the employees are friendly. The sushi is on par with the area but what makes it special is the eccentric rolls. I have plowed through probably 75% of the menu at this point and there's only one roll I didn't like and that was because it was doused with strange sauces. read more

Cant for the life of me figure out how any of you gave this place a bad review. All I can faqthom is that the bad reviews seem to be further back so perhaps there was a different chef or owners..... I however found this place to be great. It is small, yes, and it did get crowded but that did not slow down the two behind the counter. Matt, who does the apps and fried foods was polite and congenial even though he had no waitress to help him out. All the food prepared for us was great.... I am not one for sushi but all the rest of my group, all 6, ordered sushi and loved it. I had the shumya for my app, small pan fried pork dumplings. They were fantastic. The miso soup and salad that came out before the entree were also very good. I had a deep fried roll filled with shrimp cream cheese and jalapenos and i dipped it in their spicy sauce. Spicy and fantastic I loved every bite. Also loved my shrimp tempura entree. I was so insanely stuffed and so was everyone else but we all devored our meals and loved every bite. The Other Fish is definitely one of the best sushi options in the area. The small size is a downside, but personally I have never had to wait for a table. Their BYOB policy is also a positive. The owners are really informative if you have any questions regarding the sushi, and they are very understanding when it comes to substitutions: we ordered one of the sushi dinners and they happily substituted spicy tuna for the tuna roll. Cozy, delicious, and fun sushi joint in downtown Bethlehem. The staff really knows the menu and they are great at recommending new items for you. Matt, the owner, is extremely friendly and makes sure your experience is wonderful.
