My old framer closed down, so I pulled up to the Paint Chip to get my most recent degree framed. My initial appointment was very in-depth; the worker (unfortunately I don't remember their name) was SO helpful and walked me through tons of options to get the dignified look I was hoping for. I thought it was so cool that I got to go behind the counter and pick frame options off the wall - they really have everything you could ever need! We found a matte and frame that worked well with my other degree, which I brought for reference. The whole thing was under $300, which was very reasonable for what I ordered! They also gave me a discount for being a first-time customer and they also offer teacher discounts! The framing was estimated to take 6 weeks, which was a little long. However, the wait is worth it, as they custom-order and shape the frame to your needs. My order was finished in a little less than that timeline, which I appreciated. They also gave me hanging advice and tips for where it would look best. I love how it turned out and will definitely be back when I next have something special to commemorate! read more

Hubby and I were walking our Goldendoodle puppy and noticed a sign that said dog friendly business. Stepping inside this art/frame store our puppy was pretty excited lol, but we kept control of him! The staff were very sweet to our puppy, so we didn't want to leave the shop empty handed! We purchased a cat card for an upcoming kid's birthday party and Twistables Colored Pencils for our eldest! This is a really cute store. As an artist, I always feel compelled to walk in when I visit my son out in Davis. I love the variety of paints, paintbrushes, art supplies, and frames, but it only seems to have gotten more expensive as the years go by. I bought 5 small items and almost paid 100! That's two tiny water colors, two paintbrushes, and two mechanical pencils, almost 100. Unbelievable. Secondly, there were two young women working there yesterday on a sunday, one was a taller young woman with glasses and straight hair, as I was passing by the counter, looking at watercolors, she began to talk about customers to her Coworker, who just listened, she began to talk about how someone who walked in was short, talking about their looks, and how she found short people unappealing and disgusting, and continued to talk about others on and on and on. She did not have a smile on her face, did not greet, she actually made faces. Little did she know, that the person she was referring to, was my brother's gf, which walked in separately and was on the other side of the store. Bad etiquette and lack of professionalism on her behalf. No one likes a snobby student, who sits there and talks down on people's looks as they enter the store. Having said that , you truly never know what a person is going through Esmeralda, a representative here, approached me today while I was looking at the gallery and asked to 'help me' . I explained, 'no thank you' . I separated myself from her and she followed behind. Asking me several times ' can I help you' , while I was looking at art, I explained several times,I politely responded , ' no thank you' . This seemed to irritate her more and it would seem she began trying to patronize me and make unwelcoming hand gestures at me. This is an excellent store for painters. They have a pretty good selection of paints both oil and acrylic, great selection of brushes and canvases too and any other accessories that go with paints. Their service is great too, very friendly and knowledgeable employees. I'm giving 4/5 stars because of the prices. Most of their selection is "mid/higher end" more expensive brands but it is all higher quality products so it's not just them overcharging. That's not to say that there aren't a few items you can find cheaper online, however. read more

I hate to write this review because I actually really love this place and its products. My issue was with an employee. I'm Cuban. While checking out, I noticed the clerk had a pin of Cuba on her vest and asked if she was Cuban as well. She said no, she was just a fan of Socialism. Ok. They have a great selection of art supplies, they are always having great deals on really quality items, and there service is some of the best I've ever experienced. I never have trouble finding exactly what I need for whatever creative project I'm currently on - and quickly at that! It's a small art supply place but they do have a variety of materials from paint, to brushes to sketchbooks and designed papers to miscellaneous art supplies. They also have colored pens and markers and a framing area. The staff are easy going and friendly. The price is reasonable. Lucky enough to have talented artistic kids. One of them is a painter. We've had a couple of paintings framed at The Paint Chip. The staff is always very helpful and take their time with helping us find the right frame for whatever piece we're wanting to frame. This is a local art and framing store here in my little town. We will always choose this place because we always like to give back to the smaller businesses. My husband has been going here for over 20-25 years and he loves getting all his art matted and framed there. We come here probably about once a year and do at least one or two pieces here every year. I love that the staff here are very friendly and very knowledgable on any questions you have and they are very super patient and they will help you out with their knowledge as much as possible (we have spent 2 1/2 hours trying to pick up framing LOL). By coming in here I have learned the difference between the different glasses, the different frames and the different Matting. I love the fact recently for Christmas 2019 I had to pull off a funny gift for my husband and I needed 10 different gift certificates to here in 10 different denominators. We had a really good laugh about it at the cash register. When you walk into this place they have greeting cards they also have art supplies paint supplies of all sorts different type of handmade wrapping paper as well as basic frames, pens and other things like puzzles from metal earth and such. They always have their sale stuff outside the store over a few tables. We love this place and we will continue to to give them our business many years to come. read more

I always like to stop by this store when I'm in town. They have a pretty good selection for a small business in a small town (comparatively). Their prices aren't discount but Geez, at today's gas prices it would cost way more to go to another town than you would save, I'm sure. I have bought miscellaneous items from them the three or four times I've been in, mostly feeding my purple pen fetish I'm sure, also colorful pencils, tiny canvases, whatever. To my surprise I found they now carry a few yarns and knitting supplies. The needles looked about the same price as Michael's and Joann's. The cotton yarn was about a dollar more and the wool yarn a couple dollars more per skein. No coupons here, at least not 40% like M's and J's. I was tickled to find a purple Sharpie as I'd forgotten to bring one of mine from home on my trip and had missed it. There is a $5 minimum for credit card purchases. I like to support small businesses whenever possible so I will continue to stop in here whenever I'm in town. read more

I had a drawing that I made for a family member that I needed framed. Ariana, was extremely helpful in walking me through my options, the design of the frame, to what glass to use. Her knowledge was amazing. When I came into to sign my piece after the borders were done(on time, by the way)..another staff person(forgot her name)...was equally helpful. Especially in telling me where to sign on the border so as not to hide it from the frame. The finished result is beyond my expectations. Definitely more unique stuff in here, I ended up walking out with a few canvases, paints and brush for a birthday present. Keep in mind, I have almost zero knowledge about art supplies so when I asked for recommendations on where to start for painting in a park, Petra (if I spelled your name wrong I'm sorry!) Graciously guided me throughout the entire store giving me the scoop on their products. She painted a picture for me in a way that I could visualize by explaining colors, products, what works well in conjunction with eachother and even gave me tips and strategies to keep my colors fresh, paint sets clean, and how to maintain them. the paint chip is a davis institution and has been around as long as I can remember. they have always had a good selection of art supplies most esp for basic needs. they usually have a table outside with sale items and those are always a great deal esp canvases. this is a small shop and a local business so obvs they can't compete with larger chains + amazon but I like to try to support them if I'm in town and I'm out of something basic that they might carry or is on sale. read more

My framed art was absolutely perfect and I love it. The price wasn't bad either. The customer service/framing service model is inefficient at best. It took over one month to get a small job done but they wouldn't commit to when it would be done. When I would come in they were confused to where my order was in the pipeline...They log all the work manually in a notebook and they ask you "what day did you come in" to find your project. What day did I come in??? I can't remember what day it is today! The staff peel through a book for several minutes (while you wait) trying to find you..."is it a custom job...what does it look like....what day did you come in...how do you spell your last name". As you wait the computer is sitting there calling your name for efficiency! Also, when the job is done they call you once every two weeks (their policy per the employee. What? Why every two weeks? After one month, I dropped by to see the status of my job since no calls had been received. They had called me at home (yeah right, like my teens will give me a message) to let me know the job was done. The job had been done and was sitting there for two weeks waiting for a pick up. When I picked it up...same questions...what day did you bring it in...was it custom....flip through the book...searching....searching....calling the workroom...three people looking for it...15 minutes later after lots of searching and questions...they found it!!! I like what they offer here, but everything is really expensive! I came in to find colored pencils, but all they had available was a pack for $40. I'm sure it's great quality, but they lacked other options. I've looked around here before too and it makes me want to start doing crafts more, but I just can't afford any of the stuff. **BUYER BEWARE** I purchased an art portfolio folder yesterday. No one said anything to me at the time of purchase. An orange slip of paper was stapled to my receipt which I did not look at when I received the receipt. The portfolio folder was not the right size. I went to return it today, one day later. Apparently, the orange slip of paper informed me that the store only gives store credit or exchange; there are no straight-out refunds. I complained. The clerk called the manager. I have been a "Paint Chip" patron for many years. I've had many custom framing jobs done. From my personal artwork to photo's to archival to blank custom frames with specific size photo spots. I have been VERY pleased with the materials they use for the jobs and the wide range of selection they have had for the framing materials, mattes and backings. They have good quality art supplies (which is important to me) and the staff has always been very helpful and friendly. Being that I live several miles away. It is always worth the drive. I love going here and looking at all of the great art supplies: paints, pencils, canvases, etc. They have lots of project supplies too (decorating boxes, origami..) and a good selection if frames. Also several art options for children including those "how to" type books that come with supplies. At the register there is usually a fun impulse buy too ;) You can get supplies from other places cheaper, but it is always fun to peruse this shop...and then I usually end up purchasing something anyway!
