Once I completed that, I wanted to maintain my cardio program, and joined the Henry Mayo Fitness and Health Center. I really like this place, for several reasons. I can actually get free memberships at several local gyms through my insurance, but I'd rather pay to go here. It's a more mature crowd, with most people either doing some sort of rehab or physical fitness. It's not a social club or hang out, everyone is serious about what they're doing. I don't have much experience in gyms, but from what I see, they have plenty of cardio machines (treadmills, crossfits, arm ergos, upright and reclining bikes) as well as weight stations with both plate weights and resistance. There are free weights as well and all kinds of support stuff like mats, stretch bands, etc. The place is spotless, with constant cleaning going on, and everyone seems to take the time to wipe their stations down after use. I don't use these areas, but they have beautiful locker rooms, showers, basketball courts and a pool that is half indoor/half outdoor. The staff is friendly and helpful, and available for personal training if you desire. They have tons of classes from spin to balance. Downstairs, there is an advanced weight training room. I go three times a week and always look forward to it. I highly recommend you check them out.

If I could describe the Valencia EOS, in three words, it would be "REPAIR IN PROGRESS". In fact, leave your weight belt at home and bring your tool belt instead. I've trained at EOS gyms throughout Arizona and they are always well maintained. When EOS purchased the Valencia Golds Gym I was initially excited. The Gold's Gym needed some serious upgrades and I thought EOS would get after it. Unfortunately, after all the Golds Gym signs were taken down, the maintenance crew jumped ship. The original weight machines from when the gym opened 14 years ago are falling apart. The only thing that's guaranteed to work is the merchant account debiting your bank account every month. The other day I walked by four treadmills before I found one that worked. There is one cable crossover machine that has been broken for nearly 6 months. It sits in the middle of the gym with an aging "Repair in Progress" sign. The sign should read "Rest in Peace". It's become the new gym mascot. I think we should give it a name and decorate it for the holidays, because management won't do anything about it. HMU if you guys want to start a GoFundMe account to get it fixed. Nicer gyms repair broken equipment immediately, but EOS lets them sit and rot. Meanwhile, the gym hosts never ending membership drives and it's undoubtedly working, because the gym is packed. EOS mailers pour out of my mailbox. I can't imagine how much they're spending on marketing, but sadly, there is nothing left in the budget for maintenance and upgrades. The only notable improvements I've seen are modern business signs on the exterior and pretty So Cal paintings on the walls. If you are an older or advanced trainer avoid this gym at all costs, unless of course you're going to one of the classes, I hear those are OK With the unrelenting crowds due to low membership fees, gym etiquette is marginal. With that said, imagine what wonders await you in the men's locker room. You'll have to skillfully navigate through hoards of skinny/fat dudes taking shirtless selfies. I've photo bombed several of them just walking by minding my own business. Sometimes you're treated to a guy blasting rap music out of his iPhone for everyone's listening pleasure. The adjacent bathrooms are always foul smelling. One morning, I had to walk through sewage water to wash my hands because of the never-ending drainage issues. You may want to throw your galoshes in the gym bag just in case. The sink / soap dispensers work infrequently and now one of the hand dryers has the ubiquitous "Repair in Progress" sign. Don't buy it, it's false advertising. There will be no repair, nor any progress; it's been broken for weeks. You'll have to lineup to dry your hands from here on out. After several years of membership at this location, I have decided to join another gym. A few of my friends have already left, and I will follow them. All things considered, EOS Valencia isn't that bad of a gym, it's worse.

However, I've now had two uncomfortable interactions with a front desk employee named Deborah that left me feeling frustrated, unwelcome, and honestly unsafe. The first interaction happened while I was on the treadmill. Deborah approached me and told me that "someone complained" because I didn't have headphones on while watching something on my phone. I completely understand the common courtesy of using headphones in the gym, which is why I purposely chose a treadmill with empty machines on both sides of me, kept the volume extremely low, and even had captions on. The gym music, conversations, treadmills, and equipment were all significantly louder than my phone. When I explained this, Deborah herself responded, "Oh I know, I can't even hear it and I'm standing right here." That immediately confused me, because if she couldn't hear it standing next to me, I didn't understand why it was being treated like a complaint issue. When I asked who complained, she said she didn't know. The only people near me were a few women talking loudly together, so the situation felt strange and unnecessary. What bothered me most was not the reminder itself, I understand policies and courtesy rules exist. What bothered me was the approach. It felt like she blamed an "anonymous member complaint" instead of simply asking me directly to put headphones on. I later told Deborah that I didn't appreciate being told a story that didn't make sense when she could have just communicated honestly and respectfully. The second interaction happened when my app wasn't working and I asked to check in using my phone number. As I was walking away, Deborah stopped me and repeatedly pushed me to take a photo for the account. I told her multiple times that I was not comfortable doing that, but she continued pushing and giving reasons that were not accurate. I explained that I've been coming here for months without issue and that my home gym already has my photo on file. She incorrectly insisted this location was my home gym, even after my app showed otherwise. Again, the issue is not that she wants to do her job thoroughly. The issue is the way she communicates and disregards boundaries after being told "no." Not everything needs to become confrontational or overexplained. There's a difference between being helpful and making members feel uncomfortable. These interactions have created a negative feeling every time I come in and see her working. I hope management addresses the importance of respectful communication and listening to member concerns and boundaries. If management would like to contact me directly, Deborah knows exactly who I am.

I just wish I could take more of her classes. Walter is also really knowledgeable and just very solid overall. Shoutout to the front desk and management team. Gail, the general manager, is amazing and has been so supportive of my fitness journey. She really makes people feel seen and comfortable. Mark, who I did a trial personal training session with, was really nice and encouraging and made it a great first experience. The smoothie spot inside is also really good, which is a nice bonus. Policies are applied inconsistently, and even management appears unsure of the club's own rules. Equipment is outdated and poorly maintained, yet instead of fixing or replacing worn machines, management has made questionable decisions--like removing spaces members actually use and enjoy. Communication is poor, customer concerns are dismissed, and service quality has clearly declined under current management. For a gym that charges monthly fees, the experience does not match expectations. Until management improves, equipment is upgraded, and member feedback is taken seriously, this location is hard to recommend.
