The owner is very rude !! She has very poor customer service skills and not much knowledge on the critters she has up for sale in her store. Dogs are loose with no boundaries in there and not safe to enter with your pet that is leashed. Her reptiles have some kind of illness and she's selling them with no care or concern. I do not recommend this pet store there is no guarantee on there health and she will not give a refund. Pet stores usually have some kind of insurance on there product including live animals and reptiles. Owner was beyond quick to escalate a argument on this situation when bringing back a dead critter that was only in new home for a few hours she was very hyped and amped with aggression and had no remorse on selling a sick pet !! Great pet shop to go into if you're looking for reptile and aquatic animals/items. I came in to look for dog toys and accessories and was slightly disappointed with their small selection. But I still walked around and browsed at all the other goodies they have to offer. Their staff was very helpful and attentive! I will say that I got distracted with the three beautiful golden retrievers lounging around the store. I got to talk with the staff member that owns them and she was very helpful. She gave me tips and recommendations for my 8 year old Shepherd we just rescued last week. read more

I have heard of this shop for years but never ventured in until today. I was looking for some different live aquarium plants and driftwood that my pet store does not carry. I was immediately welcomed by a wonderful girl, of who's name I did not catch unfortunately. She showed me right to the live plants and offered suggestions on which were the hardiest, of which I immediately had her select for me. As I continued to browse the shop I continually heard her assisting other customers. I only browsed the freshwater fish selections but from the live plants, live fish and driftwood decor I was really impressed! The quality of their fish tanks were fantastic too! if not the several posted messages saying they don't guarantee the health of animals once they leave the store, or the improper substrate, heat, light, and loose feeding of the animals, the multiple leopard geckos in the same terrarium when they are known solitary creatures, or the escaped domesticated mice free roaming the shelves.. Let this be your sign not to purchase an animal here: I go here for feeders for my several reptiles and for weeks i saw the same bearded dragon in the same sad conditions and one day i couldn't let him suffer anymore so i purchased him and took him directly to the vet where he tested positive for two intestinal parasites as well as growth delays due to importer husbandry during critical stages of their life. These are HIGHLY contagious parasites and i would bet every one of the remaining reptiles at the store are infected and if you have purchased an animal from them that isn't doing so well, you should probably go to the vet. The sad part is that (most) of the employees seem to be relatively knowledgeable about reptiles, yet, none of the animals in their care are receiving even their MINIMUM and MOST BASIC needs. This vet visit has pushed me over the edge of doubt and now i do not trust even the feeders to not be parasite ridden and i will not be returning. it would be one thing if they turned animals out fast enough that they would only be in this housing temporarily, but from what i can tell most of their animals get there and stay there for several weeks if not months. Like how long has that frilled neck lizard been up there in his tiny box? please upgrade your husbandry and care of your animals. as a family/privately owned shop, you should be able to give the animals at least the minimum. read more

They have a great selection of fish but I will probably never be back because of multiple bad experiences with one of the staff. I've been in the fish hobby most of my life, I have multiple planted tanks I'm running Co2, I actually do my research. Every time I encounter one employee at this store that works in the fish section he is constantly argumentative and often just flat wrong. Horrible place. Rude and dishonest staff. Do not stand by the items they sell, especially when they were sold to you defective. CROOKS WHO OVERCHARGE FOR UNDERWHELMING PRODUCTS AND PETS. The aquatic plants they had Were all unhealthy, and in tankS with live fish. The pricing is sketchy and very very high in comparison to better, more noteworthy shops. The associate gave me false information about aquascaping, and led me to buy $240 of defective wood and unhealthy plants and moss. I was so excited to start building my tank. Well, i soon found out after boiling the first piece of wood and attempting to submerge it that something was not right. I contacted the store and explained the situation, and was simply trying to be replaced with non defective products or a refund. The store basically told me it was my problem that i listened to their employees and they refused to either honor my refund or replace my purchase. They are rude and shady. Lie to customers and the employees have no knowledge. SO NOT GO HERE, BUY ON AMAZON OR PETCO, YOULL BE IN BETTER HANDS. read more

I want to share a frustrating experience I just had at this store. I recently decided to get back into salt water reef aquariums having spent over a decade in the hobby. I researched local shops in the area and decided to check out The Pet Shop rather than shop online. I walked in and the salt water area smelled a bit fishy (no pun intended). That smell is unmistakable to any experienced hobbyist who knows when fish and coral are unhealthy. I look around and all of the coral stock seems depleted and unhealthy/dying looking. I ask for some help and the gentlemen brings out who I presume is the owner. I asked her if this is her usual stock and wasn't sure given the economic situation we're in. She somewhat cut me off and told me the industry is shut down and she isn't paying for the prices her distributors are charging and proceeded to bash her competitors saying they are only open 1 day a week. Ok. Not sure I really needed that background info but ok I understand. She told me I might be happy at another store in the area. I then empathized with her regarding the industry shutdown (even though other local fish stores seem well stocked and have healthy looking stock) and asked her if it's normal most of the coral look this unhealthy? One of her display tanks was full of nothing but a parasite called Aptasia (a clear sign of tank neglect). She got very defensive and said "wow I've never had anyone tell me that before"....I really wasn't trying to insult her personally whatsoever. It was a fair question. As a new customer I simply wanted to know what to expect at this store. It led to a further awkward exchange before I just decided to shop elsewhere. I get 100% we're in tough times. But the questions I had were fair based on what she is selling in her store. Based on a few other reviews of this place the owner seems to have an attitude problem. I'll be spending with her competitors. UPDATE: after reading the owners response it's very clear my initial review is justified. She doesn't get it. She just doesn't understand basic customer service and is incredibly defensive. First of all, nothing I said was a personal insult, I said I WASN'T looking to shop online (hence wanting to support local), and I never once said the word "crap". I had two small children with me at the time. I asked your associate the same thing I asked you. Is this your complete stock and why did the stock look unhealthy. That's a fair question when 75% of what your selling at full price is receding and dying. I know what a pet store smells like. The smell is not from a normal pet store. It's the smell of dead coral tissue. I've been in this hobby a long time and I know what I'm talking about...but nice condescending and passive aggressive response. If "crap" is the word you want to make up, then you must subconsciously agree. Who goes into a store to deliberately cause an issue? This store owner takes zero responsibility for her poor quality stock and her subsequent poor customer service skills. Instead further blames the customer. How about saying to your customer, so sorry we're under stocked at the moment and yes the coral doesn't seem as healthy as normal and thank you for bringing it to our attention. We take pride in our shop and will see if there is maybe something wrong with our water parameters etc. Is taking responsibility for this poor experience really that hard as a business owner? Hope it's worth this review in the eyes of your customers. If your into reef aquariums, don't take my word for it. Take a look at what this store is selling at full price then compare to other stores in the Valley. My husband and I are extremely familiar with many of the area pet stores having had all sorts of reptiles, cats, and aquariums over the years, and from the moment this store opened, we have been impressed. What makes a great shop or business is the diversity of product, extensive knowledge about the product, competitive pricing, and fantastic customer service, and this place has it all! The owners and staff are well-versed in all areas (dogs, cats, reptiles, exotic small animals, and fish), and are super friendly and helpful. They also have the stamp of approval from one of the local exotic veterinarians and are linked up with a number of animal rescue organizations that you see on site for weekend adoptions. I originally heard about this shop as a former patron of Pet's Inc. in Tempe. We were sad to see Pet's Inc. close, but very happy to hear that the staff had plans to open a similar concept on their own! The walls of animal areas are color coded for easy location by animal type and product is organized and stocked on shelves in a very logical, easy-to-find- manner. I'm also happy to see that they have higher quality cat and dog food like Wellness and Blue Buffalo, for great prices. Our most recent experience was buying 55 gallons of pre-mixed saltwater, live sand, live rock, and two clownfish for a start-up 55 gallon aquarium. Again, fantastic customer service in helping us with our needs for this tank. We also have been going regularly for coral frags and shrimp for our saltwater nanoreef since the store opened. Nice selection of coral, fish, and cleaner crew, so we will be heading back regularly as our new tank evolves. It's refreshing to see owners and staff so passionate about their business, and we will gladly be supporting them in the future. Can't wait to see how this place grows! read more

I have been multiple times now and the staff are lovely and so incredibly knowledgeable! I am new to the aquarium life and overwhelmed with all the different information out there. The last thing I want to do is learn at the expense of a living creature and I went in thinking I was ready to try snails and eventually shrimp. Thankfully an incredibly knowledgeable employee took the time to listen to my current situation and recommended that I allow the plants to get more established and found me the perfect little filter for my tiny tank. I love this place. This has been the only place I've found near me that has live blood worms and ghost shrimp for a reasonable price. They have a HUGE selection of aquarium plants and freshwater fish. They have pet you normally don't see at a petsmart or petco. All the employees are very helpful and friendly and the owners are very nice. I love how they have rescues there on the weekend. That's how I found The Bark Side Rescue and Kitts Kitten Rescue. My daughter "LOVES Pet Stores" and when she saw that a new pet store (The Pet Shop) was in town well of course I had to take her. She was in the market for a couple of hermit crabs. The Pet Shop is far from us so I choose to email first to see if they had what we wanted. They did and the turn around time on e-mail/with pics was same day! Our Favorite local pet store went out of business last year and all I can say "my daughter was deeply saddened" and she found The Pet Shop is a great replacement. It is not as large (I never liked how large the other became) but they have a great selection (very healthy) on fresh and saltwater fish, little critters, and of course snakes and alike. I have been a pretty intense aquarist my entire life basically. I've set up everything from a nano tank, to a 3,000 gallon reef tank, so when I moved out to Arizona the first thing I did was look for a decent aquarium shop. I was pleasantly surprised when I found that in the east valley there are actually a few really good options. This was actually the 3rd family owned shop that I checked out because if you are into the hobby of fish, big chains are the worst. Over the last year or so I have gotten to recognize the staff and really enjoy talking to them when I make my monthly pick up of some RO and Salt water as well as making some good purchases. This is a quality shop with quality supplies. As far as Mom and Pop shops go this a great one. They are kind, knowledgeable and have a great stock of all sorts of animals. I highly encourage anyone to stop in and just have a chat with these guys about your next pet purchase. read more

Apparently this place thought that Pets Inc went out of business, because it was too rectangular and not close enough to where people live. All I've heard about the Pet Shop is that it is being run by some former employees of Pets Inc and wants to be exactly like that store was. It isn't yet, but they did just open within the last month. They have a good selection of fish, both fresh and salt, but they are missing the huge reptile section that Pets Inc had and the rare species as well. They had a pair of williamsi day geckos, but that was about as exotic as it got. A huge beef I have with them is they are selling regular bearded dragons as citrus. Look at my profile picture, that is a citrus bearded dragon. They also keep their dragons on astro turf for some reason, which I am totally against. I liked their bettas and fish supplies (although they don't have enough live plants yet) and will have to give them a chance to grow, but their reptile section was just very disappointing. read more

This shop just opened, not too far from me, although it is not the closest one around. But it is worth the extra miles since I loved it right away. It is the the best pet store I've been too yet. They have a great selection of small mammals, including sugar gliders, plus reptiles and tarantulas (which is what I came to check out.) The store is are very well stocked in all supplies, and they sell feeder mice, rats, roaches and crickets. Although I am not into fish, this place has by far one of the largest selections I've seen in the Valley. They seem to have as many salt water species as they do fresh. The shop itself is a large, warehouse-like space, well organized, and best of all, the prices are very reasonable. I highly recommend this store. read more

Was checking out the fish stock when Mike came over to help and spent almost 30 minutes schooling me on fish knowledge. The store owner Dylan was very helpful when I came in to ask questions about my betta fish. My fish has been very sick the past few weeks and I originally went to Petsmart where they told me he had a fungal infection and I bought what they recommended. Well he still wasn't better today so I went to The Pet Shop and immediately Dylan said it was not fungal at all and it was a bacterial infection after he saw a picture of my fish. He took the time to pull out some books and figure out exactly what I needed. They have a great variety of fish and I did notice their betta fish seemed much more lively and healthy than those at other stores. They also have products (food, toys, beds, ect) for dogs and cats. I have been coming to this shop for a few years now and absolutely love everything about it. I used to drive across town for their selection of freshwater fish and live plants, fortunately we moved and are right up the street now. I have a small reef tank and a new tortoise, the staff are very knowledgable across the board and have helped with educating me along the way. Over the years I have had a few mishaps with purchases from the store (an opened chemi-clean container and a bad batch of salt water) but the owners stepped up each time and made it right no questions asked. Price point is good staff and ownership are excellent and honest, livestock has always been healthy...what more could you ask for. Oh and there is a bonus, if you go on the weekends you will prob run into three of the cutest and sweetest golden retrievers around! read more

I am not one to leave reviews, but this place deserves one. The GM at this location is rude and unprofessional, the staff lacks training and knowledge to be helpful and efficient at their jobs! I was directed to purchase an ADF and two glass cats which were completely wrong for my aquarium setup so when i attempted to go back and EXCHANGE not even requesting a refund the GM denied me, when I explained that this was their employees mistake they still denied me and stated I could "donate" them back. I will not return and spend my money here there's plenty of other great fish stores around the area don't bother with this one. read more

Made an trip out to the Pet Shop. At first when I walked in, it was the run of the mill local pet shop. The staff talking to a regular, three speed bumps (oh wait those were the guard dogs!), and just classic mom and pop feel. They stopped to welcome me and my son in and told us if we needed help to let them know. We ventured to the back were the salt water fish were at. Salt water selection was low, however its Sunday and I am sure its not a stocking day maybe even far from it. Pricing seemed to be high on some things, low on others, so really averaging out what you would find else where. Corals on the other hand selection was huge, and pricing was great. I have found cheaper online but then you have to sit at home and wait for the box so they don't die in the heat! Help was great, they were knowledgable and fast to help. They didn't attack you like other stores which was nice. My son has a small fresh water tank so we walked over and found some frogs that he wanted. All in all I would return, for fish and more. Everyone is friendly, and its a laid back store. With it being a family run business I expected the prices to be much higher and was surprised that they were pretty spot on. The Pet Shop is a great Salt Water store for aquarius fans. small fw set up but everytime i go there i always see new fish and more plants coming in. im sad to see Pets Inc close then again im happy to see the same people at Pets Inc at the The Pet Shop. Friendly staff and very knowledgeable on just about everything on saltwater fish and corals. this is the only fish store ive been going to since Its opened. prices are reasonable and better than most fish stores around the area. if you need special items they will order them for you. i just bought some metal halides from them at a good cost. for me having a 155g FW and a 75g reef talk. they have pretty much everything i need and can ask for when it comes to questions or supplies. great staff, great atmosphere. i would reccomend this to anyone who is interested in the aquatics. read more

To start off when I first went in there to get salt water for my fish tank I brought in a 27 gallon tote bin that I was unaware of that I could not fill it up but when we asked her, she gave me a lot of attitude and was being extremely rude when all I asked was can I get 20 gallons the most I could do was 10 so I took it and secondly I bought two clown fish from there. One of them is doing perfectly fine thriving and the other one died. Two days later they were not fighting my water levels are perfect. As they should be because I bought it from them. I took my clown fish with a picture of my tank like they asked when I called and then they tried saying that the other clown fish's was beating the other one up. Because it had a tear on his back fin because I watched as soon as he died he went right behind the rocks so that's how his fin got a little tear and then they said if it's not the other clown fish, then it Has to be my water and I have to bring them a water sample but I live 30 minutes away so it's not easy to get there and I can't drive read more

My friend whose an avid aquarist has been coming here for years and loves it so I thought I'd stop by as I'm new to the hobby. Such a great experience! The entire staff was so friendly, helpful, and attentive. It seemed as though some people brought their kids in just to look around and the staff were friendly to them too. I've been to a few aquarium stores where the staff is kind of snobby. Not here! And they have a great selection of fish, plants, frozen food, and tons of foods and plant and water additives. I was there for the fish side but I looked around the rest of the store and they have tons of cool animals including a 3 foot monitor (not for sale though). I really do like this shop and they have a good variety of supplies and animals and fish, but one employee (Mike) always over exaggerates how big the fish are gonna get (ghost shrimp do not get 4inches+, Hatchet fish do not get 7-8 inches, blue tetras do not get bigger then 3 inches(talking the small ones that you can keep bettas), variety of things he's told me) always tells me fish will not work together because they're too aggressive (refuses to sell to me) then tries to upmarket me on buying more expensive fish, I do my research on these fish before I buy them and end up buying them at different stores and ends up working out, I have 6 tanks most bigger then 30 gallons, had been fish keeping for 10 years so Ik what to get Alsoo he sold me a albino bushynose pleco for $23 and it's just a normal pleco!? read more
