The staff is knowledgeable and very helpful. The fish and shrimp I have bought there are thriving.

We have shopped at Pet Works for years and have consistently had positive experiences, which makes today's interaction especially disappointing. During checkout, we asked for the law enforcement discount to be applied. The cashier told us they do not offer one. I simply responded, "Oh, that's odd--we've always received it in the past." The cashier then checked with another employee named DJ, who said they only offer a "first responder discount." I replied that a police officer is a first responder. Employee DJ then came over and argued, "No. I was an EMT for 7 years--I was a first responder. Not law enforcement." This interaction was not about the discount itself. If Pet Works no longer offers a discount, that is completely fine. What was concerning was the dismissive and uninformed manner in which the situation was handled by the person that appeared to be in charge. My husband served 30 years in law enforcement, and the lack of basic understanding and professionalism during this exchange was surprising. One interaction can say a lot about a business, and unfortunately this experience reflected poorly on Pet Works of Olympia. After years of being loyal customers, this was extremely disappointing. read more

Unfortunately, we arrived on parade day and the parking lot was filled with illegal parade parkers. A few of us wanted to shop here so we dutifully jenga'ed our cars near the front of the building. We stayed in our vehicles, waiting for a spot to open as the paraders wrapped up. Out came a very kind young lady who ran us off. So, if you aren't smart enough to keep your parking clear before an event, but run out to chase off your own customers, I got nothing. read more

This review is for the self bathing area of the store. I have not actually had a shopping experience in the store, I have only used their self bathing area. We were from out of town, and decided to pop in here for an impromptu self dog wash for our dogs, and we regretted that we did. It was a terrible experience. The self bathing area was beyond filthy. I mean, its one thing to be filthy because there are dogs being washed, etc., but its another to not even attempt to clean the area. The floor was soaking wet, and no one was making an attempt to dry it. I almost slipped and fell twice. The bathing stations are old and outdated. There were no towels to be found whatsoever to dry the dogs. There were not leash restraints that help keep the dog in the tub to be found either. The drying area is horrendous and horrible. It is a small constricted area, and makes it very hard to dry your dog. It was so awful. This is one of the worst self bathing stations I have ever been to, and I have been to several in various places. In addition to that, the staff was not very friendly. I would not recommend The Pet Works for their self bathing area, that is for sure. The only thing good about the self bathing was the price of it. read more

The review is for the store groomer. She allowed me to bring my own shampoo and even my own towels to use on my dogs. She groomed my pets over several months using my supplies, and after my last appointment with her recently, she said that she would no longer groom my pets because I was not using her supplies, which meant that I didn't trust her. I spoke with the store manager, who did not feel that this was poor or inconsistent customer service but said that this groomer and I were "just not a good fit." read more

I've now bought cat food from this store about 4 times because it's priced well. However, every time I leave the store, I feel like, wow, they are really unfriendly in there. Not personable at all. I could buy the food on Amazon, but I try to shop local. I've also shopped at Mud Bay, and it's the complete opposite experience. You get the feeling the staff enjoy working there, are friendly, helpful, and personable. That's where I will be taking my business from now on. read more

One of my favorite places to shop. I go every weekend for the aquatics. We even got our rabbit there. It can be hard to get help if you need a fish sometimes and you practically have to tap someone on the shoulder. Once you get help the fish guys are knowledgeable and will spend time looking just to see if they possibly have a fish hiding somewhere. They definitely know more about fish and plants than other local stores. They occasionally get fish, and crustaceans that I don't see anywhere else. I like their wide variety of supplies like food and medicines. Whoever places orders really knows what they are doing. Look elsewhere for plastic decorations but they usually have great rocks and wood. Ask if you don't see the wood you want because sometimes they have wood hiding other places in the store. They have pleco caves and shrimp accessories. read more

My wife And I have been thinking about purchasing a larger fish tank for our beta fish. I was looking online because of COVID 19, But I just wasn't getting the answers that I needed from a professional. I looked up The Pet Works on Yelp, and went to visit a few days ago. A nice gentleman with a red beard and mask helped us very professionally. He guided us along the way. I Purchased a 15 gallon bowfront fish tank set up that had a heater for the size a pump and everything you need it all in one kit! And then we picked out a bunch of plants and the natural soil palette floor matter for the tank floor. We purchased eight green eyed black finned tiny schooling fish; that we found out that we could have Swim in the same tank with a beta fish. I Purchased a lovely rock and a piece of driftwood also. TPW has a great selection of food for your doggo and accessories. Worth the visit with easy breezy parking. I came after I saw they do nail-clippings at such a reasonable price. My pet, Smokey, gets real nervous about his paws being touched let alone getting them trimmed. DJ who did quick work on him with care and meticulous detail. Smokey teethed DJ, but I probably wouldn't have know if I didn't ask DJ, he was busy just busting off those pesky, quick growing nails. Immensely helpful to have someone who knows what they're doing and is great at it. read more

I've been coming here for dog self-wash for a few years and this place has just gotten terrible. They can't be bothered to stock towels or washes and rinse even when it's slow. The tubs are absolutely filthy. Half the aprons have broken clasps. If you ask anyone in the grooming area for help they act rude, harassed and defensive. Everyone has nothing but excuses to offer. Today I was told that you have to ask at checkout for assistance but there's zero signage saying that anywhere. And today they stood by and did absolutely nothing after another patron threatened me with assault because my dog shook and sprinkled his back. I spoke with a manager today to give feedback and he had nothing but more excuses and defensiveness when I told him I was offering my constructive feedback and perhaps they could use it to improve their service. I've always had great service buying food, toys and other stuff, but my experience with the self wash is, well, over. I was holding out because it's the closest place to me but they do not seem interested in offering the service they have created. read more

He walked us through every step and answered every dumb question we had! He never grew tired or was rude with us. The rest of the staff seemed extremely friendly as well. They had a ton of stock of just about everything for every pet you could imagine and with pretty good pricing as well. Beats paying shipping online. We have been loyal, supportive customers for fish, cats, dog and related supplies since PW opened in Olympia, but today I saw that one employee was wearing a sidearm pistol. I spoke with the manager to express my concern. Yes it is 'legal' to allow open-carry firearms, even for employees on the job, but employers can also legally prohibit employees from carrying guns to work. I told the manager I will not shop there again unless they change their policy. I do not feel safer around an employee with a sidearm, I feel uncomfortable--it makes me question the safety and the values of the business. The manager was polite and said he would think about and consider my input. I hope other customers speak up. It's a well-documented fact that where there are guns, the risk to public safety increases. Guns are not forgiving. Humans make mistakes, and people get killed. Guns are not the solution. read more

This is a really nice pet shop. It's very clean, organized, and the 2 employees we encountered were knowledgeable and friendly. They have everything you could want for dogs and cats. They carry some pets for sale: birds, lizards, a few snakes, frogs, fresh and salt water fish. They also sell rats n mice, but I'm not sure if they're pets or snake food! They have a better than average selection of Bully sticks and chews. I enjoyed this store more than the other two cookie cutter pet stores that you'll find in every state and most cities. They had 2 different kinds of puffer fish! I love those guys! Yes, you can take your furry best friend inside with you. read more

My fiancé and I have just moved to the area from Chicago (I have convinced her to move back home with me). We care about our pup and want to provide the best for him. We liked that this shop sells high quality food, so we stopped-in. This first time we where there, the folks at the counter kept ignoring her and talking to other customers, even though we were standing in line and they were not. We paid for our items and assumed that it was just a fluke. We went back in today to get our pup groomed. The groomer was sweet and kind and therapeutic. We dropped off our man and left. Upon returning to pick-up our dog, we decided to grab some treats. I left my fiancé to pay for the treats while I took care of the dog. Again, the woman behind the counter completely ignored her. She never once acknowledged that she was even there. She just rang her up and said nothing. This is not the sort of customer service this town needs. If you run an independent business, you should treat everyone as though they are all important individuals. The only information that I have about this cashier is an "HS" on receipt and that she is a shortish blond woman in possibly her 30s. She is pretty unprofessional. read more

Extremely helpful and knowledgeable. You must ask for help though, or they will keep working on what they are doing. That's how they keep the store as neat as it is. Their aquariums aren't crowded and the fish are healthy. I just bought my 75 gallon aquarium there for less than the big box stores. They aren't there to rip a person off. I am concerned about the downtown Oly's lack of ADA access -- the front door was difficult to open as a couple employees stood & watched me. (Not even any applause that I'd made it in!) I brought my dog in to the self-wash area and found out none of the spots were accessible to people who use wheelchairs/walkers. (I've since learned the place on Fones DOES have an accessible tub.) The employee just shrugged & said "sorry. I'll tell management..." It's been 5 months, but I haven't been back to see if management has done anything about the accessibility issues. read more

I bought a bird for my elderely mother from Petworks that was supposed to be hand fed. Even though I have worked with birds for over 20 years she has not. Well, if the bird was hand fed, it was not hand fed for very long. - I wrote a letter to Petworks management but no one had the coutesy to respond to my note. I like the store but customer support is a sensitive issue. That will be my last visit. read more

Was our first time in and used the grooming service for our beagle. We were beyond pleased with the service and pricing. The store and grooming area didn't smell. It was clean and the gentleman in grooming was amazing. He took time to greet our dog and go over the service details. We will never go back to our old grooming facility as their service has been awful. Wow!! If I could give 10 stars I would. Good job The Pet Store, you've sure earned our business.
