Finding a way to work your body that fits your schedule and matches your personality is always a challenge. A friend recommended pilates and said she was going to try the Pilates Room... I should come with her. I was anxious. I am not slender, toned and athletic and I was afraid of being the hippo in the room of folks with such bodies. I had no idea what pilates was about and was sure that I would not fit in. But, there was an easy to use website, a clear, concise schedule online and a terrific one-week $20 trial that would allow me to try any class I wanted in that week, so in I jumped. I probably held my breath walking in. But, the space was welcoming and intimate. The instructor (for the first class and every one since!) was knowledgeable, supportive and skilled at meeting me where I was in terms of comfort and ability. After a week of checking out a few classes I was hooked. I could feel that I was working, but had been supported to ensure that I was not injuring myself. Modifications were readily available and I was not alone in using them. The studio is right in my regular travels -- downtown and close to everything. The schedule has 5 or 6 classes that fit in my schedule and provide some variety. The month membership with no sign-up fee and no commitment for more than a month means I can drop in as my schedule allows throughout the year. I very much appreciated the extra bonus of a teacher discount that makes it that much more accessible. I can sign up online to ensure a space in class and found it easy to have a standing reservation for the classes I could commit to regularly. And the people are fantastic - when I have wanted to get into a class that was listed as full online, with an email I get a timely response and have no qualms about showing up and being welcomed! Tori - the owner - is incredibly professional, responsive and supportive. The other folks in class represent a wide range of Ithaca -- in every size, shape and ability level. I have never felt out of place or uncomfortable... even when I am hanging upside-down in the anti-gravity class (which is my new favorite fun!) I am grateful that I found the Pilates Room and that it has become part of my routine. I feel stronger and more comfortable in my body because of it. The Pilates Room and Antigravity Studio has been keeping our cores strong for fifteen years. Small businesses thrive when their customers are happy and the success of this business is a tribute to that. The co-founders bring unending warm, supportive energy and meticulously individually tailored anatomical corrections to their varied repertoire of small classes and opportunities for individual training. The studio is genuinely warm and friendly, but underlies that is the owners' ongoing commitment to professional development. They are endlessly intrigued by the human body and endlessly inventive about ways that one can strengthen and flex it. My experience with the technology and administrative organization since Fall 2013 is that it is seamless. All the instructors have back-end ability (pun intended); that is, in administering client software needs and their mission: guiding people in core-strengthening. Everything works: signing up, paying, canceling; it's all easy. The classes at this studio form a community, reflecting the best values of our small town and the caring philosophy of the owners. I have a free membership at a large studio at the University but pay to work out here because the instructors' caring attention has made me see continual progress in my health and fitness. read more

Being a person who can't/won't work out on their own, needing more personal attention and group-dynamics to get motivated, The Pilates Room is the perfect place for me. The owners have created a fitness-family environment and I'm greeted by people who know my name every time I walk in. The classes are small, which allows for lots of personal attention and adjustments. The staff is knowledgable and passionate, resulting in kick-ass classes that are dynamic and diverse. I'm 19 weeks pregnant now and all of the instructors have been lovely and supportive about creating exercises and giving me modifications to maintain my fitness level throughout my pregnancy. It's been wonderful! I highly recommend Kimberly's Barre class! It's my new obsession. It's fun and hurts so good. :) Also, before I was pregnant, I LOVED the antigravity classes! I'd only ever seen those classes in Manhattan! How lucky are we that the Pilates Room has brought Antigravity fitness to us in Ithaca! read more

I joined the Pilates Room this past January after having the opportunity to attend a workshop offered to the Ithaca Triathlon Club. The workshop provided insight into core strenghtening and the importance of connective tissue and fascia. I use to only focus on cardio and weights; now I have encorporated core strenghening into my exercise routine. In addition to pilates, The Pilates Room offers many other types of classes, such as Barre, Urban Rebound, Reformer, etc. With the variety of classes, there is always something new try. In addition, the instructors continually mix up the classes to offer variety and new challenges. The classes are small, the instructors are personable, and the instructors are able to monitor and assist you during the classes whether you are a beginner or a regular attendee in the class. read more

I'm not sure what the earlier reviewer was talking about, but I've been going to the Pilates Studio since last August and it has been fabulous for me. When I began, I couldn't come close to touching my toes, my sense of balance of poor, and I was generally weak. I feared serious physical challenges as I aged further. Now I feel better than I did 30 years ago. I've taken several different classes (pilates, of course, barre and rebounding) and experienced six different instructors and they've all been uniformly strong. And last, but not least, the other "students" are a very diverse group (from undergrads to retirees and a broad range of interests).
