Representing 2025, D is for Dianne's Fish Shack & Smokehouse. This is another June 2025 Canada trip. I decided it'd be cool after Toronto instead of going the same way back to go up east-northeast and come back into the US from the Thousands Islands Bridge to see something different. We arrived in Kingston at dinnertime hungry but unsure what to eat. I looked on Yelp after parking in downtown, but was still unsure. My girlfriend & I needed to use restroom and popped in a hotel. We asked the front desk recommendations. She recommended Dianne's very close walk. We ate outside. It was balmy for Kingston in early June with temps in the 70's F around 8 PM; their average high temp in early June is only upper 60's F (around 20 C). Our server was friendly. She said people are enjoying the first really warm evening of the season. We both got their fish n' chips. It's an Alaskan Pacific haddock as opposed to cod or others used. This is superior to other fish n' chips I've had. This is delicious. Fries were good too, but the fish was the real star and about the best fried fish I've had. read more

We were supposed to a restaurant across but they were taken aback when we said we're a party of 15 so we crossed and found this place that could accommodate our group. Since we're not locals in the area, we opted for the poutine then my daughter opted for the fish taco. Her food was actually good but rather a very small serving. Either that, or we're used to American-sized servings. The poutine we had was the seafood type since we figured out, they should have amazing seafood since we're near water. Flavor-wise, I think they needed more. The sauce that came with it did not seem to give justice to the dish. Nice location though. And service was good. I was really looking forward to this restaurant during my birthday trip to Kingston. They have a Pride flag out front, which is a plus, very happy they support making everyone feel safe and welcome. I went on a Sunday night and there were a few tables but not overly busy. The food was very good. I'll say up front that the reason I'm deducting a star is because the time between getting my appetizer and main entree was more of a wait than I'd ever expect at a restaurant. Luckily, on this evening, I didn't have a tour or event to go to, so although it wasn't ideal, nothing catastrophic was cause by the wait, but it was still too long. I would say about 35-40 minutes after appetizer was finished. The drink thing is really starting to get on my nerve. $15 for a drink and now almost every restaurant puts then in a small glass. You don't get what you pay for. I ordered two drinks with being there so long and the 2nd was in a fancy margarita glass but it was nearly ALL ice. Not what I expected for fifteen bucks. The restaurant itself is cute. Has a very beachy vide and is on the water in downtown. There is outdoor seating too, if you're into that sort of thing lol. The booth I sat in was quite comfy. I ordered grilled Mexican street corn for the appie. Here, you get value. Two full cobs and it was delicious. The main course was two of the tacos. And like I said, that was an unbelievable wait for two little tacos. The taste of the food, however, was so good, they still get 4 stars from me. I had the shrimp and beef brisket tacos. And they had an all corn glute-free option. Always a plus with me. The tacos were really good and loaded. Lots of flavour. My server was Abbey, but lots of different people waited on me. The service was okay, but it was a good wait for another drink and for the main course. The appie came out fast. If they can speed up the food delivery and make those drinks worth the price tag, this place would be phenomenal. I am visiting Kingston again in October and will go back. Have gone twice and enjoyed both experiences. The ambience and service is always great. While I didn't enjoy the shrimp tacos (because I have the cilantro tastes like soap gene) I understood they were objectively good. The addition of dad's root beer on the menu was also really good alongside oysters, which had a great mignonette sauce to pair with. Then finally, while the shroom burger wasn't perfect (it was messy) it was so packed with flavour that I would happily get it again! This is actually a 7/10 for me. We arrived at 4pm in the afternoon looking for a late lunch, early supper. The restaurant was probably 1/3 full but the staff seemed to be running behind, but they were nice. We opted to sit indoors. The decor gave off fish shack vibes. We ordered the fish & chips and the brisket burger. The batter on the fish was so crispy and stayed crispy throughout my meal. The kind you could grate your fork over and hear the crispy sounds. The haddock was tasty and tender. I really liked the tartar sauce. As for the sides, the fries were also very crispy but had no taste. The coleslaw had some BBQ spices in it, which I found a bit weird. Don't know if it's inflation to blame but this is one expensive fish & chips at $24. The brisket burger was served in a tasty grilled bun. It only had one paper thin slice of green pickled tomato and was accompanied with the BBQ flavored coleslaw. Great lunch spot in downtown Kingston. Menu is simple but has lots of options. Service is good and food comes out fast. Honestly, I was a little disappointed. Came for dinner on a weekend in August. It gets quite busy (with tourists) I think. The location is great, as it's right by the harbour. Ordered the Mexican Corn, a few different Tacos, and Lobster Roll. Not sure if their tortillas were just not my thing, but the tacos were mediocre. They're decently well dressed but not stand out in my opinion. My favourite thing was actually the Corn, which was tasty and fun. Service was great, the waitress was friendly. I was always curious about this place, so I dropped in last night. Seated quickly, which is always a plus. I got placed at a long high table with a metal chair. The decor is mostly chalk drawings of fish. Nothing spectacular, but at least it's not distracting? The menu is a mess of combatting cuisines, chosen to maximize the number of diners they can lure in. Is it a seafood place? A Mexican restaurant? A BBQ joint? Why pick when you can have it all? Surely they do all of them well! I got the smoked brisket with fries. Beef was tender, but the sauce could have come straight from a bottles and probably did. The fries were the best part of the meal. The server was efficient, and did cheerfully give me napkins when I asked for them. The maitre'd brought my cheque without asking if I wanted it, and at that point my thoughts were, "Well, if you're that tired of having me here, then I guess I'm tired of sticking around." Maybe he was anticipating a huge crowd to come fill the mostly empty restaurant. For the price and the quality, it's an average experience. Nothing bad about it, but nothing outstanding either. This is unfortunately a zero-star rating, only because 'zero' is yet to be an option on Yelp. This was my first trip to Dianne's. The prices are on the high-side, but that was not the issue. Having been a Chief Marketing Officer for the better part of the last 20 years, I have a deep understanding of the connection between customer satisfaction and paying for the roof over my head. Based on their performance the staff and manager of Dianne's do not. It was a Monday evening, fairly crowded and we were greeted with, "We're short a bartender, so it may be a bit slow." We agreed to stay. My date and I each ordered the fish and chips, and a dozen oysters each, and glasses of wine. Then the wheels came off: 1. After about an hour the waitress brought us one order of oysters. When asked where the other one was, her response was, "Oh, I didn't realize you ordered two, would you like this one now?" A legit question, however we were there to eat together, so we opted to wait for the second dozen. That took about 40 minutes. In my customer service world, when the waitress messes up an order, rectifying it in a prompt manner is the correct course of action...getting put at the back of the kitchen queue is not. 2. We are now almost two hours and two glasses of wine in, having consumed the oysters and feeling very hungry. So then one order of fish and chips arrived. "Oh, I didn't realize you wanted two." Duh. So she walked away to have the kitchen , in the now almost empty restaurant, prepare the second order of fish and chips, leaving my date's order on the table to get cold. These two points are indicative of poor training, execution and attitude. We ordered more wine and espressos and paid the $310. I was about 20 minutes to closing time and the waitress said, "Take your time." So we did. At about 10 to nine, having paid the $310.52 bill, I requested another espresso for my date. The response from our waitress was, "I've closed the till for the night." Interesting yet irrelevant. It costs a restaurant under a dollar to make an espresso. In my world, a good restaurant has three choices: 1. Prepare it, reopen the till and bill me 2. Prepare it and I pay cash 3. Prepare it "On the house", in the context of $310.52, I'm thinking most establishments would opt for #3. Telling the customer to basically 'pound sand' is not on the table. My date's name is the same as the restaurant. She wanted a T-shirt. Again the answer was no. This is one of the most blatant errors by this team. A T-shirt, paid for by a customer, and worn by the customer in the location of the business amounts to advertising paid by someone else for a business - it doesn't get any better than that in the world of marketing. The cost of a T-shirt is under $5 when purchased in bulk through a premiums and incentives company. Again, option #3 would have been far better than the course of action they chose. So we left the restaurant. My date said that's crazy I want a T-shirt, so she went back in. The three staff, tall waitress, short waitress and presumably the cook (male) were seated at the bar. She stated that the waitress was 'terrible' and the entire 'service experience' was retarded. Look it up in the dictionary: in the context of an event it means slowed down and dysfunctional. She asked for the name of the waitress and was told 'no'. The cook jumped up and braced my date. I'm really not sure what he was planning to do but the aggressive attitude was in line with their complete disregard for the customer. The following day my date contacted management. The manager she spoke with was only focused on the use of the word 'retarded' as applied to the service (not to any individual). She attempted to re-victimize my date, rather than address the very real harm done to her by the terrible service and attitudes of the staff. In a company which values customers as the source of all revenue there is but one correct response: "Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I will address it with my staff. I would like to get a complimentary T-shirt to you, if you would accept it, as a token of my appreciation." That's it, that's all. If that had been done, I would not have felt compelled to write this long a review in the negative. However after 45 years of helping serious companies make billions of dollars, this struck a nerve. There are other options in Kingston when you want to have a pleasant evening, I would not select Dianne's. read more

Love love love Dianne's! It has a pub feel to it, and the fish and chips were delicious. Thick, flaky haddock with a golden breading. The taco salad was also very good. Our server recommended a local gin (Earl Grey) for my wife, and it was so good, we made sure to bring a bottle back to the states. Service was spot-on -- not too much attention, but just enough to keep us satisfied. We were there mid-May, and things were just starting to open up for the season. There is patio seating, but the tables had not been set up just yet. But I can imagine a delightful time watching all the people stroll by. This section of town, right on the water, has a lot of historical sites and beautiful architecture, and it would have been great to take it all in on that patio. Pretty good, especially if you come on the right day. Came on a Monday as I was stopping by before heading to Toronto. There were a few tables seated but still plenty of space at around 12:30 pm. Given the downtown location parking can be tough at times but managed to find street spots a short walk away. My brother and I each got a fish taco to try as well as the Monday fish & chips special. The fish tacos (2 for $13) were the highlight as they were packed with toppings (cabbage, onions, salsa among others) and the fish was nice. Stopped by on a Monday and was surprised by the decent valued specials that they offer on specific days. Monday was luckily, the Fish and Chips special which meant $14 for 2 pieces of fish, coleslaw and fries. Also, we ordered the beer-battered fish tacos on the side which in all honesty I enjoyed a lot more than the Fish and Chips. Really liked all the flavours in there and it was packed with toppings. The actual fish and chips were pretty good albeit a tad small per piece, but taste was solid. Would highly recommend keeping an eye on the specials because without them, the value would be lacking. Taco Tuesday seems to be what I should go for as the tacos are really really good and comes with a Margarita for $15 total. read more

What kind of foolishness is this? The tiny little fish portions were swimming in grease~it took four p-towels to mop up most of it. The salad was absolutely not fresh! The coleslaw in the tiniest container I've ever seen was old and tasteless. How does this place get away with this? I called and was told that it's Skips fault. Now Skip leaves a LOT to be desired, but how is it their fault you don't know fish n' chips INCLUDES CHIPS? NEVER, EVER AGAIN! I was still hungry and wound up having to cook another meal! I've visited Dianne's many times over the years and have always enjoyed my experience and food here. They offer a good selection of local beers and wines on their menu and obviously many seafood options as well. For those who aren't into treasures from the sea, there are a few land loving (and vegan!) choices as well. My go to order is the fish and chips with fried shrimps. I love their fries and home made tartar sauce as well, so so good!! A great choice when in downtown Kingston for a yummy meal! read more

This place really exceeded my expectations. Food here was fresh, staff were courteous, and we overall enjoyed our dining experience here. Before our mains arrived, we were served complimentary bread and butter. I started off with a small cup of Fish Chowder. It contained small chunks of haddock immersed in a creamy savoury soup. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it for those visiting! As our mains we ordered the Steamed PEI Mussels in a white wine tomato sauce and the Taco Plate. The mussels were very tender and fresh tasting. I liked how the sauce was light, which allowed me to still enjoy the mussel flavour. For the tacos, I chose the BBQ Brisket and Beer Battered Baja Fish Tacos. The lunch combo also comes with a side of fries. The baja fish tacos were a bit bland, however I enjoyed the nice texture of the fish and the crispy batter. The brisket taco was phenomenal. I really loved the juice running from the meat and the spices made it really delicious. On a side note, we ordered the herbed chicken on the side. The chicken was incredibly dry so stay away. It was actually pretty quiet here on this Thursday during dinner hour. We sat inside, and our waiter came over right away and took our drink orders and started us with water. Service was great! We had a row of fish tacos (five), you can mix and match but we went with all fish. They were good, and I appreciated the double corn tortilla to hold the taco in place. The hubby had the clam chowder and he said it was good, but needed some extra salt and pepper in there, (which he added). Its a cool place to check out if you are a seafood lover. Diane's fish bar had wonderful presentation and the taste was impeccable. It didn't leave me feeling gross afterwards - I had the Baja fish tacos and the salad that went along with It. The salad dressing was a bit too sweet (could be due to the fact that I don't have a sweet tooth). The best part about road trips is that you get to try something new everywhere you go. Me and my wife were headed up to Ottawa to see my parents when we decided to stop and explore Kingston which marks the halfway point of our journey. I'm very skeptical of seafood restaurants, particularly when they aren't really next to the sea... but Kingston is however on a major river and shipping lane so I trust that the seafood is fresh and I was right! Dianne's is right in the heart of the city core so parking can be a little tricky when you get there. There is street parking and also paid parking lots scattered around the neighborhood but they get really full during weekends. We ended up getting the beer battered fish tacos, lobster roll and fish cakes. I'm a sucker for tacos and I generally hold taco places at a higher standard and Dianne's definitely hit the mark with their fish battered tacos. I highly recommend dropping by here if you are in Kingston. The city has a lot of good culinary spots and Dianne's is one of those spots that is always full of locals so you know it's not just another tourist trap. read more

This chowder was all cream, a few big chunks of undercooked potatoes and maybe 4 TINY pieces of white fish.... Like literally 3 or 4 tiny pieces. A definite Kingston staple spot! Dined at Dianne's for lunch today (a later lunch, that is, at around 4PM), and sat outside to take advantage of the lovely sunshine downtown Kingston was having. It was our first time here -- both in Kingston and at Dianne's -- and based on a bit of research on Yelp and Google, we (I am referring to a family of four) picked this place on our way to Gananoque (which we chose to skip, after seeing the liveliness of downtown Kingston). We were seated immediately by very friendly staff, and a comprehensive look through the menu, we chose to share two 'large plate' dishes; Alaskan pacific halibut fish and chips and cavatappi pasta with herb-marinated chicken. This seemed like enough at the time, however our estimation of the portion sizes was wrong (re: 'large plates' -- threw us off), and it came out to be a bit less for us. That being said, the food was absolutely fantastic! An immensely satisfying and fulfilling meal, along with the views of the park and water that creates such an enigmatic atmosphere, we truly savoured every bite. The fish and chips created just the right dichotomy between soft, flaky fish and delightfully crunchy batter. The pasta was dressed in a great mélange of olive oil, garlic, arugula, parmesan, and nuts, and the chicken was well seasoned. Dianne's also has many options for drinks, which we took advantage of by ordering a classic margarita and two mojitos, as well as a ginger-ale. My only complaint here is that the margarita experience would have been enhanced if it was in a stemmed cocktail glass. Another complaint is that the food took quite some time to be prepared (around half an hour, I think) -- which made us think that some starters were definitely needed. This complaint may be slightly irrational, as we were quite hungry and the place was quite busy -- sorry! In conclusion, Dianne's is a great place to sit and dine while taking in the ambiance of the wonderful Kingston downtown area. I would give this place 4.5 stars if I could, alas, I cannot, so 4 unfortunately will have to do. A few more times at this place will definitely change my rating to 5, I'm sure. I really wish I took some photos, because the atmosphere and food looked brilliant. Also, kudos on the music choice! Really added to the experience. A tip to future diners -- take advantage of the menu. There are many great options on there, and based on the portion sizes (which are comfortably reasonable for one dish to be eaten and/or shared by one or two people -- not four), quantity does mean quality. I stopped here based on the recommendation of a local when I was here for work. I opted for the coconut seafood poutine and their dry English style cider. I couldn't have been happier. The service was friendly, albeit a bit slow (hence docking one star). I would definitely return though. read more

Absolutely amazing! We came wanting to sit on the patio but it was full so we sat inside and 2 minutes later the hostess(going above and beyond) to get us a table on the patio. The ambiance inside the restaurant was homie, music was not too loud and and we can actually talk to each other without having to yell. Food was very good. A little on the pricy side and fairly busy due to the tourist. But the food was decently delicious. I enjoyed their pizza more than anything but they also had a mussels selection and I personally love seafood and thought that was well worth it!
