I have yet to be disappointed in the food at The Placid Baker. Eating here is truly a treat! The sandwiches are absolutely incredible. I always say that the quality of sandwich is highly dependent on the quality of bread, and boy oh boy they've figured that out in spades. Oh my! A friend heard that I was looking for a great croissant. I had been to Paris, bless those souls killed and injured during the Friday night bloodshed, and had the best pastries ever. Napoleons, Bonnets, croissants, you name it...I loved it. So, for the past several years I have been on the hunt...sort of like Elmer Fudd, with just about as much luck, looking for that great pastry bakery. I found it here at the Placid Baker. I recently got a tip from All Over Albany that the Placid Baker is one of the very few bakeries in the region that regularly offers French Macarons, so I had to stop in and see for myself. They didn't have any in the display case, so I asked the girl behind the counter and she told me they were making some right at that moment. The baker came out and said he had some pistachio (my favorite!) all ready to go, they just needed to be sandwiched. in less than 5 minutes I had 5 fresh macarons in a little paper bag and was on my way. Being a completely spoiled NYC girl, I almost decided to move to Troy when I took a bite of their veggie sandwich. Not only it was made with largely organic and local produce, the price is at least 50% lower than what I would pay for a similarly made sandwich in NYC. It would've been nice if they have free-wifi for the customers (there was a wifi signal, but was password protected). I can't wait to go back here when I go up to Troy again! read more

My wife and I ate at The Placid Baker on 8/16/12. The sandwich most written about on Yelp is The Placid Cuban (which someone on Yelp referred to as The Cubano -- former name?). It wasn't available on the day we were there, but a sandwich that had some pork was recommended as a close substitute so I took that. I couldn't imagine The Cuban could have been any better -- what I had was super excellent. My wife ordered The Broadway Pretzel and, except for the salt on the pretzel, liked her sandwich. She also loves pickles, and thought the sliced pickles that came with both sandwiches were the best she'd ever eaten anywhere. The pastries were beyond compare! Our favorite was The Mudslide. It looks like a brownie, but they categorize it as a cookie. I wanted to order the Peanutbutter Brownie, which got a rave review from a regular customer on Yelp, but I let a customer who hadn't eaten lunch jump in front of me -- and she ordered the last one. I also wanted to order The Chocolate Bomb and The Truffle Brownie, but they were out of both. We also ordered a pastry (looked like a cookie) that had mint as filler -- truly excellent. My wife loves Macarons, and they received very good reviews on Yelp, so we ordered some of those but none had coconut which my wife most loves. We both thought the Macarons were ok, but next time we'd invest our calories elsewhere. We also bought a loaf of bread. I thought the girl at the counter said it was sourdough, but I'm sure that it was more rye than sourdough (if there was any sourdough at all). The only rye bread I could see listed said onion was mixed in but, if so, we couldn't taste any. The only serious advice I'd offer The Placid Baker is to create a website -- keep it up to date and be anal about its accuracy. A blog is the closest it comes (placid baker.blogspot.com) to listing the info. you'd hope would be on a web site. As of Nov. 2013, the most recent entry in this blog was back in June. It lists new hours (10-3, Mon.-Fri.) that Yelp hasn't yet caught on to. [As of late Nov. 2013, under its Menu tab, The Placid Baker still lists its old closing hour (4PM), so don't arrive late.] It also lists being open on Saturday (9-3), which isn't quite accurate. The bakery itself is closed on Saturdays -- but it opens a stall at the farmer's market around the corner (a sort of mini-Placid Baker). The day I visited, there were a dozen to two dozen wasps flying around its pastries. Seeing insects around your food isn't the most appetizing thought for prospective customers, the owner should be concerned about a visit from the health department -- and I hope the girl putting her hand in to grab pastries for customers was receiving combat pay. read more

I come to this bakery often for lunch and I think it's a gem. The bread is awesome and sandwiches are always fresh. Tom's turkey sandwich is absolutely delicious. The food is organic and fresh, so obviously it's going to be pricey. I finally tried the macaroons today that people keep raving about. Those were okay, but my absolute favorite is the apple almond tart. The restaurant is set up like a cafe and has outdoor seating. It's a bit annoying because the space on the sidewalk isn't proportionate to pedestrians on trafficable days. It's not just this restaurant, but all of them on that strip. It is nice to have the option to dine outdoors though. Overall, decent place to grab a quick bite. read more

Wow! Was in town for a few days and I have gone in there 7 times. The soups are very refined and are accompanied by a truly perfect baguette, even by Parisian standards. I can also recommend the orange macaroon and any of their heavier pastries. Gluten lovers paradise. Only place in Troy where I'm actually happy to give them my money. This place is an absolute gem. I have no idea why a place like this is in Troy but I thank god that it is. Cute decor, cozy interior, and you even get a view of their kitchen. Friendly staff who know a lot more about baking than your run of the mill bakers around here. If you've never been, you have to try their almond croissants. Their other pastries are good but this one is a must try. If you're in the mood for actual bread, their baguettes are also point. We stumbled upon this sweet little cafe bakery because the Whistling Tea Kettle was not open. We enjoyed our experience very much. Take with a grain of salt the snobby, picky, negative reviews. A business will never please everyone! I loved the ginger citrus tea, the breakfast muffin, and a few other pastry goodies we shared.. The prices were reasonable and the servers were very pleasant. Tortano bread is the best crusty bread in the capital district. It is a round bread with a hole in the center. Too bad they only have it on Friday afternoon after about 2pm and on Saturday morning. $5.00 a loaf. I have to try the Cubano sandwich when I get a chance. read more

Nice to have a French bakery in Troy. Never thought I'd speak French in downtown Troy! First time I went I spoke with the owner who is from France. Pastries are a lite burnt but good. Service is so so. Was expecting more from a French bakery. Doesn't feel like the employees want to connect with customers and make their experience the best it can be. It's about just getting the customer checked out so they can go in the back to finish their tasks. They should take lessons from Nibbles down the street. read more

One word. Pretzels. My son and i happened across The Placid Baker's table at the Troy Farmers Market right when they brought out their handmade pretzels. We only purchased 5, and as soon as we bit into one we instantly regretted not buying the entire basket. I've spent a lot of time in NYC and Philly, and have eaten my weight in what i call "streetcart pretzels", so i think I'm quite qualified to say...The Placid Baker makes the best pretzels in the universe. read more

Last month, I called the bakery inquiring about a specific bread I needed for a dinner I was hosting. They followed up with me, the weekend of my event, to confirm my inquiry and needs. Initially, I did not place an official order, just inquired, yet they still called. This truly exhibited exceptional customer service. I've been here a bunch of times. I've never eaten anything bad here. The savory stuff is generally tasty and their mac and cheese is just divine. Their lunch options are switched out a lot, but there's usually several kinds of sandwiches (one is always vegetarian--possibly vegan?), soups, and salads. The sandwiches are on very good bread, and they'll grill the sandwiches for you. If I'm really lucky, there's mac and cheese! The portions look small, but always fill me up properly. (Did I mention the mac and cheese is divine?) This baker doesn't do cupcakes or cakes. He does croissants and tarts and macarons and some bars/balls etc., and nothing's overly sweet. During the holidays, I picked up a killer pumpkin mascarpone tart. He uses high quality ingredients (usually organic or local). We're always sure to pick up some ham and cheese croissants when we have time to head to this shop. read more

Very good soup hear at the placid. Carrot ginger soup is my favorite so far. Even though the price is higher than I expected, it's worth it because they use organic and fresh stuff! I usually come here for the macaroons- the macaroons are priced at $1.75 for one which is a really good price considering Short and Stout sells them for $2.45, and Whole Foods sells them for $2.50. They were delicious! Good service with a cozy environment. read more

The breads are good the service is terrible. Called twice for Rye bread said they would have some. Got there and nothing. Said they would have some on Saturday. I called there and they don't answer the phone! But the answering machine said open till four. I got there around 3pm and they were closed. They were inside and they wouldn't come to the door. What a wonderful place ! Such a variety of incredible things to try. The french macarons are no Laduré but they are quite enjoyable all the same. The pulled pork sandwich was amazing. The Ciabatta bread in combination with the ingredients tasted really fresh and delicious. Try the "Tres Mariposas" coffee if they have it --- it is possibly the best cup of coffee I have ever had. read more
