This place is probably one of the few gems you'll find in this part of town, tucked away in the middle of a residential area, not too far from Notting Hill. Despite its lack of touristic appeal, it has a beautiful interior with a rustic elegance and artistic flair that makes it THE pub of choice for most locals. This means that even on a random Tuesday night, it's never empty. It has a small drinking area, accesible via the smallest doorway you've ever seen, as well as a large dining area where most of the art and comfy seating is. The staff is chill and friendly, and you're not likely to be forgotten even on the busiest of nights. A nifty little feature this particular pub offers is the cellar downstairs. I wouldn't call it the most comfortable place to chill in, but it does have a rather novel appeal; especially if you're looking for a bit more privacy and quieter conversation compared to the upstairs dining room. Their menu features hearty pub food cooked with care, and the seasonal fare is something you're not likely to find in any of the pubs in central. The Lamb Shepherd's Pie and the Fish & Chips seem to be the fan favourites, but I liked the burger and sides, myself. Everything was perfectly spiced without the usual fistful of salt most places douse their food in. The drinks menu goes well beyond the typical draft beer, and I found their whiskey selection to be plentiful enough to make a whole night of it. Everything else from wine to rum is also available, and they have a few cocktails available, as well, but I swore never to drink a cocktail in a pub ever again, so you'll have to tell me how that goes if you decide to have one. The closest tube station is 5 minutes away from the pub, so it isn't the hardest place to get to, but still pretty out there, in my opinion. What an incredible experience! a lovely pub and restaurants! The ambience was amazing, full of beautifully decorated trees and shrubs, really in the Christmas cheer! I love the little doors into the dining room! So cute! I had a mug of Winter Warmer beer (delicious) and I had a perfectly cooked, delightfully savory beef burger with fries! We were served by a very kind gentleman who was pouring the beer, he was very helpful with any questions we had! 10/10 experience! I would give more stars if I was able to! My buddy lived in London for a few months in London and recommended this bar for a drink. It is a little out of downtown, but a great walk. There is a subway station nearby if you want to take the tube. The place use to have sections where depending on your class, you would sit and have your libations. Very cool. The bartender was nice enough, but the atmosphere was top notch. Make sure to go to the basement to check out the bathrooms. It is pretty cool down there. read more

We had a great time, the staff were really friendly, food was great, large portions and the drinks were great too! The menu has a couple of good options for vegetarians - Breaded brie was the star of the table. - Baked camembert, wild garlic pesto, beer sourdough, crudite quickly become another favorite! - Spinach, pea & watercress soup, toasted campaillou, pumpkin seeds was delicious too. ------------------------- As they do a seasonal menu, we sadly couldn't find the breaded brie on the menu anymore. -Irish soda bread and marmite butter, the bread was full of flavour but the butter seemed like plain/garlic butter butter rather than marmite. -Burrata and Nutbourne tomato salad, croutons, wild garlic pesto was absolutely yummy and filling! -Beetroot and freekeh wellington, carrot puree, steamed rainbow chard, gravy , the pastry on the wellington was really good, however the filling could do with a little more flavour. Bright dining room with lots of dark wood and plenty of large tables. Also a more exciting cocktail menu than your average pub, with 4 different kinds of G&T. What a pretty, pretty pub!! I finally understand what Ashley meant about tiny little doors! I like them (even though I was worried that I'd hit my head!!) We have a friend who lives around the corner from here, so we wandered in for a drink after spending all day outside in the sun (as soon as the sun went in, we became cold, and in need of drinkies!!) Apart from the pubs good looks, it was great because: * I love all the little compartments to divide up drinkers * The staff were speedy and friendly * The food smelled lovely * A previous review said it looks unremarkable...but I thought it looked beautiful! Started out NYE 2012 here, and went several other times past that. What a great, friendly, amazing, gorgeous pub. Made several friends here, and had a BLAST of a New Year's Eve. The little sections divided up by wood and short doors were allegedly were businessmen brought prostitutes - and who among us does not find that fascinating. The gorgeous front windows - etched glass sinuously winding around the front - has NEVER been broken in all the years this pub has been here. Well over 100 years without a break. Yanks could take a lesson from the Brits in taking care of their stuff. read more

Don't bother to look for it yourself. They gave us beer right away when we were waiting at a bar waiting for a table. As soon as we sat down, we waited and waited...finally waitress came to our table. From the 2nd beer, we just went to the bar and brought it back to the table. So, I recommend to go order directly at the bar. We ordered beef pie, and it was excellent. What a beauty. I have to take my (proverbial) hat off to this pub. Why? Because it is exceptional. Why? Because it's like the "shire" meets Oliver Twist! Old British heritage neatly displayed in a compact yet spacious establishment. High ceilings, oak bar, ornate windows and teeny tiny doorways that make you feel like you have stepped into Lewis Carroll's fantastical world. If I wanted to share this I would probably say that I highly recommend it, that it's not to be missed and it's one of the best pubs that I have ever had the pleasure of frequenting, but as I don't want to share I didn't say a word. read more

Very unusual Victorian Young's pub located in Maida Vale, north west London close to Warwick Avenue tube station and Little Venice. The exterior of The Prince Alfred is rather unusual, consisting of wood and etched glass. Inside, it is very quirky indeed, made up of a series of wooden booths with miniature doors connecting one to the next! Moving around the pub is a little like moving around a submarine, ducking low in order to pass through bulkhead doors! The ceiling is high, with chandelier type lighting hanging down. The bar itself is of a fine wooden design with a high gantry which reaches almost up to the ceiling. A clock is incorporated into the design. Seemed like a fun place to go. Went in as the people immediately demanded for ID. When I handed it to them, they they told me it was fake and said the only way they would serve me was with a passport. The manager told us that they could buy an ID off any street corner therefore, he wouldn't take ours. We went to the Warrington Hotel down the street. The food was good - a little expensive but good none-the-less. This is why I'm giving the place 3 vs 4 stars. I had the lentil soup to start and the steak and ale pie for the main. A really cool quaint pub situated in Maida vale, nice quirky partitioned rooms that require you to duck down and crawl into each one. The decour is unremarkable but the atmosphere on a Friday night is friendly and welcoming. A average selection of drafts and one or two real ales. The restaurant seats plenty and a large portion of the guests look like what one would assume Maida vale locals look like. We had the lobster and ribs at a very reasonable £30. The lobster was a little small but the ribs very tasty. If I lived in the area, this place would definitely be on my local list. read more

A bit hit and miss. Beautiful pub, with traditional snugs, nicely re-decorated dining room, and a good selection of ales and ciders, with some choice of soft drinks, such as Fentimens or standard juices. Staff were friendly and very helpful, although not entirely well informed; when asked if the meat was free-range we were told it was not, although the management later told us it was (great!). Foodwise; glad to see they no longer serve Fois Grais; poor on veggie options, although the one option did sound lovely. The presentaion of everything we ordered was lovely, but quality wise, not all worth the rather high price: The olives were overly salty, but that's a matter of personal choice. The scallops were perfectly cooked and glorious, as was the hake. The 'confit of duck' was just a rather tough, dry duck leg, rather than fat stored, slow-cooked, fall off the bone confit. One of our party ordered chips and proclaimed them the best they have ever tasted, whilst parsnips served in the veg side were dry and withered. The giant yorkshire pudding, was impressive looking but dry and chewy, rather than crisp and tasty. Overall expensive for food that was a bit like a practise run. £16.50 for the hake, whilst lovely served with a crab butter, is a little steep when it only comes with 4 halves of new potate and you have to pay and extra £3.50 for dried out veggies to make it substantial. Made more dissapointing by a visit the previous evening to the exceptional Grain Store at Kings Cross, which charges a similar price, but to a consistant & much higher standard. read more

This pub is a friend's local and worth visiting for their decent selection of real ales. If you are in a small group and wish to have privacy, look no further: they have retained the old wooden partitions that separate the bar from back in the day where the working class sat in different sections to the middle class. The Prince Alfred is a charmer! Original curved and frosted Victorian glass windows and partitions, killer backbar woodwork full of architectural details and flourishes and those historical partitions with the 'duck under' passageways. I've gotten two different answers on the origins and they are probably both true to some extent. The first answer was that the partitions separated the classes drinking in the pub. The main entrance on the corner was for the livery men and the private entrances to the sections were for the gentry. A second version told of prostitutes gathering in the front and bankers (why bankers? I dunno. Just relaying the story) would take the woman into the privacy stalls. Whatever the story, the relics of history give the pub some additional cache. One quirky outcome of the interior layout is that there is no interior access to the toilets. You have to go outside to the door by the restaurant (separate entrance). The staff here is friendly as are the patrons who range in age from young singles to neighborhood regulars and professionals. It's very close to the Warwick Avenue Tube Station and is well worth checking out. read more

I saw one of the managers that used to work here working in a pub nearby, so not sure if that means they are going to be shut for a prolonged time, but we are definitely missing our neighborhood pub. read more

Cute pub- it has walls diving throughout the pub - supposedly, they were class dividing walls in old days. Drink on the menu is what you would expect from London pub. I was staying at the Colonnade next door and the concierge recommended this spot. Walking by it looked totally empty and I took it as a bad sign, but when we walked in it was packed (the pub side). Funny how when we sat down, more people started to flock into the restaurant side. I had the potted brie as an app, and the foie gras burger after. I asked if I could have my burger au poivre, and it totally threw the waitress off. She kept running back and forth to the kitchen trying to describe what I was talking about (russian language barrier I guess) and I even wrote "au poivre" on a sheet of paper so she could show whomever she was trying to explain it to. A short while later the chef comes out to our table, and by now, I'm thinking maybe I should have just taken it as-is, to avoid any unwanted "spices" on my burger. The chef was polite and confirmed my request, and said he could do it no problem. My old lady had the foie gras and chutney as an app and the sea bass. Unless you like the UK version of sea bass go for it, otherwise I'd stick to something else. Not saying the sea bass here was bad, just that it's bad all over the UK, especially if you're used to how sea bass is in the US or Japan. The wine list here was decent and the rocket and parmiggiano salad was a good side. The wait staff was polite and went the extra mile and the chef came back later to check if everything was ok with my burger, which was pretty damn good. What a perfect Sunday brunch spot, this pub and restaurant is extremely distinctive due to it's curious head bumping interiors. I'll leave you to Google the actual meaning of why the booths are divided by low wooden beams, my flatmate informs me that the Prince Alfred was a knocking shop, the partitions providing partial seclusion for the ladies to conduct their business. No idea if this is true or just one her yarns, but it certainly adds extra flavour to the Sunday roast, lying in a delicious wedge of plate-sized Yorkshire pud. God bless locals! read more
