A great local pub in a historic neighborhood. Loved the ambiance. Had fish and chips with tartar sauce, a curry sauce and mashed peas. Very British! Everything was delicious!

    Original Victorian Woodwork.

What a relief to go into a pub without a big TV screen throwing sport at me. A feeling of stepping back in time and enjoying the elegance and ambience of surroundings that modern developers would have ripped out. One can imagine drinking with the ghosts that must exude from the old wood dividers and panels and discussing perhaps the siege in Sydney St or the sinking of the Titanic. But to come up to date; it's a good working pub that suits all tastes and a restaurant that serves a popular menu that is not too expensive. The Prince Alfred, more than a pub, a London landmark - an institution !

They have the cool class dividers from Victorian Age in the bar.

My buddy lived in London for a few months in London and recommended this bar for a drink. It is a little out of downtown, but a great walk. There is a subway station nearby if you want to take the tube. The place use to have sections where depending on your class, you would sit and have your libations. Very cool. The bartender was nice enough, but the atmosphere was top notch. Make sure to go to the basement to check out the bathrooms. It is pretty cool down there.

    Oooh pretty pretty pub...

What a pretty, pretty pub!! I finally understand what Ashley meant about tiny little doors! I like them (even though I was worried that I'd hit my head!!) We have a friend who lives around the corner from here, so we wandered in for a drink after spending all day outside in the sun (as soon as the sun went in, we became cold, and in need of drinkies!!) Apart from the pubs good looks, it was great because: * I love all the little compartments to divide up drinkers * The staff were speedy and friendly * The food smelled lovely * A previous review said it looks unremarkable...but I thought it looked beautiful! I like the frosted glass pattern, the pretty ironwork and light, airy space (although I suppose this would be less impressive if it was a cloudy, grey day!!) **I should probably mention that I was in a reeeally good mood....so I may have had a rose-tinted and tipsily happy view of the world when I visited this pub!!

If you have time, go there. 4 star decor, beer selection, food, and service at a bar 2 star service at a table Bathroom is outside, so make sure to ask where it is. Don't bother to look for it yourself. They gave us beer right away when we were waiting at a bar waiting for a table. As soon as we sat down, we waited and waited...finally waitress came to our table. From the 2nd beer, we just went to the bar and brought it back to the table. So, I recommend to go order directly at the bar. We ordered beef pie, and it was excellent. Nothing like the one I had in the U.S. They get it from the restaurant next door called Movember.

Went for Sunday roast on a pleasant afternoon! The roast chicken was just okay okay but their banoffee pie with banana icecream was just amazing. It was too good. Now full in the tummy, could hardly walk around

This was a special-dinner night for our last night in London. Fabulous food in a nicely maintained 19th C pub. Pricey but worth it.

We specifically came to try fish and chips, so we were lucky that The Mall Tavern was nearby. Each of us ordered fish and chips, and all of our plates were left nearly empty. My goodness, I have never had better fish and chips than here at The Mall Tavern. The fish was crispy, and the chips were perfectly salted to taste. I appreciate that chips in England are more like potato wedges than classic American french fries. Way less fried and way less salty, so you can enjoy the actual taste of the potatoes! I also ordered a side of Mac and cheese that we all shared. I don't know what kind of cheese(s) was used, but it was the perfect starter to our meal. For dessert, we had the sticky toffee pudding for the first time. It was hard not to order another one!! We came in for late lunch, so the restaurant was empty. I assume they are much busier at lunch and dinner time. I also enjoyed the selection of beer while we waited for our food to come out. Next time I'm in London, I'm returning here immediately.

This restaurant was absolutely amazing from start to finish. I ordered the beef roast, and we also shared a side of the creamy cauliflower, which was to die for. I truly cannot sing the praises of this restaurant enough. The service was personable and welcoming, making it easy and comfortable to ask questions and try new things. One of the managers (apologies I don't know her name) checked in on us several times and even encouraged a few of us to try additional menu items. The food came out quickly, and once it arrived, the table went completely silent because we were all too busy enjoying every bite. I highly, highly recommend this spot to anyone visiting London and even the locals. A solid 10/10 experience!

One eventually came to our table after sitting awhile. I of course had to try the fish n chips. A couple of veggie burgers were ordered and a regular burger. Surprisingly happy hour was still on at 8 o'clock so drinks were ordered. The food all came at the same time and everything was cool. The fish had a nice flavor from the fried batter. To me it was similar to Long John Silvers as far as the batter is concerned, but slightly better quality overall. The fries were standard. The only thing horrible was the very bland mashed green peas. They should be omitted from every pub across the country, but I think it is a traditional item included with the fish. The cocktails were good as well as the price. The sticky toffee pudding was something else I was advised to try while in London. I must admit it was really delicious. It came with a scoop of ginger ice cream and a warm buttery toffee sauce to pour over. It was delightfully warm and sweet and paired well with the ice cream. The cake itself was moist enough on its own with notes of brown sugar and molasses. I could have had seconds and thirds of this desert. Yum! The majority of my party didn't think the food was fantastic. The burgers happened to be somewhat alright. This was a first for me having pub food and I would have more again as long as I stick to the basics.

She can set up her own Yelp account if she wants to argue. The service was friendly and helpful (although once the food was served, we didn't see them again. This is kind of normal for UK pubs? I feel like the booze options on Yelp need updating: beer, wine, straight liquor and gin & tonics. Maybe call it Uk pub full bar? No martinis or Moscow mules here.) Our server (south Asian dude, helpful, accommodating, and friendly) was awesome, but so were the other staff (2 nice young ladies of different ethnic ancestry), so basically across the board great service. Weather was great, so we enjoyed people watching from our outdoor seats (Daunt book totes are definitely a thing here. Even when the bookshop in question is closed)
