Ambiance here is quite nice. It definitely has a colonial vibe and offers some early American dishes. Our waiter was quite polite and offered some suggestions. The food however is overpriced and just doesn't fit the bill. I was surprised to sit down and see a simple steak and potato dinner was $72. I ordered duck and my wife ordered pork belly. The food was alright but neither were meals that we'd want again. Two entrees, two apps, and a single glass of wine. ~$180 with tip. I don't mind spending $200 on dinner - but if I'm spending that much dinner should be stellar. This was just mediocre and I'm honestly surprised it has a 4.5 star rating average. My partner and I rang in New Year's Eve at The Puddle Dock and couldn't have been happier with our experience. We chose seats at the comfortable-looking bar, which was a great spot to start the evening and soak in the warm, antique, historical vibe of the space -- lots of character without feeling stuffy. We built our own dinner from a mix of appetizers, and everything we tried was excellent. The local cheese plate featured a soft, brie-like cheese that was rich and delicious. We also ordered the mussels, which were a standout -- especially the mustard component. I wouldn't have expected mustard to pair so well with mussels, but it absolutely worked and added a surprising depth of flavor. There was also a chicken dumpling special that was comforting, well-seasoned, and very satisfying. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. The service at the bar was fantastic. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful when offering advice on what to order, which made the whole experience feel easy and welcoming. We dined here on Nee Years Eve and had a great time. The atmosphere and location are amazing. It's right on the edge of Strawberry Banke and the ice rink, and has its own parking lot (though it is often taken by the skaters, who technically aren't allowed to park there) in downtown Portsmouth. The cozy cabin vibes, warm fireplace, large bar, and Christmas decorations made it truly lovely. The food was good, even great, but didn't quite rise to the level of amazing. My duck breast was a bit fatty and tough without the crispy outside one would expect. But the flavors were good. Normally the food here is excellent, not the case with the "ribeye" and potato menu item. It's the most expensive item on the menu at $75 and sadly does not live up to that price at alll. We were told the rib eye is an 8-10 ounce well marbled local raised steak served with greens and fried potatoes. What came out were 5 small strips of cold, unevenly cooked, zero seasoned, zero flavored, strips of cold steak like youd see at an Olive Garden steak salad. Total disappointment, we tried adding salt, pepper, but it was too far gone. The potatoes were average at best and the greens were micro greens. It was presented all mixed together like a salad. To top all this off it's served with smears of black cold mayonnaise all over the plate... absolute disaster. This item needs to be removed stat. read more

5 Star alert!! We loved this place! Went here for my birthday and will be recommending it for anyone visiting Portsmouth. Note it is on the pricy side!! Atmosphere is cozy and quaint. Very old charm. There are tables inside with a bar and an outside area. Wait staff was nice and attentive. Food was delish! (I didn't take the best pics so don't be concerned by them. What we got and recommend: - mussels - appetizer. They grill them on a cast iron and not in a broth. Different but tasty! - beet salad - must get. It was amazing! - scallops - plentiful dish, with amazing sauces and garnishes. ( you get a lot of scallops too!) - another member at the table got the swordfish and said it was very good. - another member at the table got the pork belly and said it was the best he ever had! Just love the ambience of the space. The fireplaces, the wood beams and the interior design keeping the olde style look. It fits for Portsmouth and is a great way to start your evening or end it after a nice walk around downtown Portsmouth. Not sure why I did not finish the review. My bad. Returned on 8/10/25 with my mother-in-law and her boyfriend. Such a perfect evening. We were able to walk around the public gardens just across the street before dinner, and then afterwards, enjoy a live performance and see the gardens in lights. The meal was great. Consider making a reservation, as this place can get busy. The service was very friendly and polite, and efficient. Our server provided recommendations and we ordered a few things, including the chowder and the beet salad, and the trout. Everything was very good and we enjoyed our experience here. It was our second time to the Puddle Dock. Unfortunately this was not a stellar experience as was the first time. The food was excellent but service was lacking. There were two servers visiting our table. When we asked one for a wine recommendation, one said she would send the other waitress over with wine tastings. Next thing we know our waitress appears with individual wine carafes and pours my husband and I a full glass of wine each. My husband was ok with his, but mine was a Cabernet, which I did not want. The waitress of course took it away, brought the wine menu and made it right- but I ended up feeling embarrassed by the whole situation. Another annoyance was that we were offered more bread (the bread is very good but thinly sliced) and found out when we got the check that they charged $2 for extra bread. Delightful experience Wednesday night at "The Puddle Dock". Every course outdid the last. The cocktails were expertly crafteted, refreshing, subtle & well balanced. I ordered the chicken which was tender & moist served over heirloom corn porridge (which I was initially a bit hesitant about trying) was subtle, smooth with crisp bits of sweet corn that complimented the entree perfectly. The cinnamon rum bread pudding was the perfect finale. Served warm it was melt in your mouth indulgent accompanied by a lucious rum caramel sauce. Our server Mackayla was the perfect combination of friendly, informative & attentive without being overbearing. It was her first night serving and she knocked it out of the park. Puddle Dock is a beautiful little restaurant in Portsmouth. The minute you walk in, it's warm and inviting, with a big fireplace and all of the wood accents. It's absolutely gorgeous. The hostess took my coat for me which I thought was lovely, and we don't see enough of that. If I'm wearing a short jacket, I don't mind putting it on the back of my chair, but when I'm wearing a longer coat, I hate that it has to drag on the ground if they don't have a coat closet, Everything from the drinks, to the meal, to the service is impeccable. It's a great date night spot or just come for the yummy food. We started with the Yorkshire pudding. I'm a sucker for a perfect popover and this is definitely that. I had the colonial pie of the day which was seafood and my husband had the duck. He said it was some of the best stuff he's ever had. I finished with the Pavlova and my husband had the pumpkin pie special. Both were exceptional. I would highly recommend a visit or 10.. lol. read more

Great food! I can't say enough good things about this spot. The ambiance inside was perfect for a nice dinner and can imagine even it's better during the colder seasons. For an app we got the campfire mussels they tasted so fresh and it was nice to have a different take on them. For dinner we got the land and sea burger and the crispy skin chicken breast which were out of this world. I don't usually like to get chicken breast out but the waitress recommended it and I'm so glad I got it. I don't think I'll eat that delicious of chicken anywhere else. For dessert we got the delicious cinnamon rum bread pudding, another knock out. Highly recommend the place and food! I wish we lived closer so we could go back more! We were up in Portsmouth and the Puddle Dock was on our short list to try. A smaller place with upstairs and down stairs dinning this place is so wonderful. Old and antique the crowd was not young but everyone was having a great time. We split a Strawberry Banke Devil egg with caviar, perfect mix with a salty tast that was to die for. Glad we did it. We started off with the fried squash flowers with riccotta cheese. OMG they were great. I had the duck - delish and cooked perfectly but she had the Haddock on purple mashed potatoes and spring brocolli. OK I believe it was really brocolini, but who cares it was fantastic! The best, freshest, most perfectly cooked fish in a long time. We had the best time, the best service, and laughed and ate well. This is a very unique place! The overall feeling is so warm and cozy-- a colonial tavern feel with an elevated elegance. The menu is very curated and all choices are on brand with the overall feeling. I don't think there's really a bad option for food. I would say to check the menu before you go if you are someone who wants a generic meal, because this is not that place. They have a pretty decent wine selection to choose from as well. This was favorite restaurant we went to in our weekend in Portsmouth. The atmosphere and service is amazing. It's small and romantic while also giving an aura of colonial Portsmouth. The food is amazing. The winter squash soup was so vibrantly colored and flavored. It was perfect for the cold winter day. The pork belly had great flavor and it is so smart to put it on top of a slice of brown bread that soaked in flavor from both the pork belly and the baked beans underneath. Had a lovely dinner here this evening after a spending time visiting downtown Portsmouth and surrounding area. Has similar atmosphere as the Gibbet, a restaurant in Groton. We shared a Yorkshire Pudding for appetizer which came with a wonderful popover and magnificent sauce (we agreed this was the best dish), a chicken and leek pot pie, the Portuguese cod, and for dessert a blackberry lemon pavlova and a key lime posset.
