Okay, a preface to my review before you hear about my experience. This place is a historic home in…read morehistoric downtown McKinney. It's absolutely beautiful, and makes amazing pictures for your wedding day. Nothing that I have to say is about how beautiful the location is, or any crazy hidden surprises (okay, maybe one) about the house. Please, look at the photos I posted from my own wedding to see how incredible this place looks and how well it photographs. Now, on to why it got three stars. When we first went (a year before our target wedding date) we were told that there were only 2 weekends left in the month of October and that it would cost x amount of dollars more (I can't remember the exact number) if we wanted an evening wedding because it was "in such high demand". We really loved the place, some friends of ours had been married there, so we swallowed the pill and moved on. Looking back, I really doubt it was that crowded seeing how easily they got us in for a rehearsal practice, I think we got ripped off. During the many many months up to the wedding they were so hard to get a hold of. They never answered their phone and sometimes it took two or three urgent voicemails before they would call us back. The woman who owns it convinced us we would need the extra hour added on to our package and when we didn't even remotely use it (finished earlier than the original time anyway) they wouldn't refund us even though THEY got to go home early because of it. Several things the actual week/day of the wedding. At our rehearsal we noticed that a strand of lights on the gazebo was out, we asked them to fix it and they didn't. The owner's mother is a florist and when we refused to use her because her prices were OUTRAGEOUS they retaliated (or so we believe) by leaving this horribly ugly bright orange/palm leaf floral arrangement on the top of the gazebo. Our colors were brown and blue, and she knew we were getting married later and left it up. It's now in all of our wedding pictures (see the example I posted) and honestly made putting our wedding album together a $@&!# because it was in EVERYTHING. We had to do a bunch of black and white photos because of it. I am still angry about it. As far as the weird surprise goes, their "bride's suite" is behind their laundry room and not very well appointed. We had to rent a hotel room so my party and I could get dressed because honestly, there is no where to sit down in there. Also, laundry room. Also, scary as hell doll-filled room right next to it. Like seriously, this is a lost scene from that weird 80's movie where dolls kill everyone. Also, the food we sampled at the tasting we went to was not what the food tasted like the night of my wedding. They cater their own weddings and the food at the tasting was pretty good, the night of it was disgusting. I really think they used left-over food from the wedding before because it was luke-warm like it had been under a heat lamp and flavorless. Luckily my cake was incredible and made up for it. They really made my wedding difficult to enjoy. They were not there to help us at all, and the women we hired to be "day of wedding helpers" were the only reason my party and I even got down the aisle. They were way overpriced for the terrible level of service they provided, and the terrible catering. Their only saving grace is the beauty of the house and the picturesque aspects of historic downtown McKinney.

The owners, Carol and Cheryl are awesome to work with and are available any time you need them for anything. The home is just beautiful and has a lot of character, which makes it exciting to decorate. We were able to go the night before the wedding and set the venue up. When we arrived after the wedding on Saturday the owners and their crew were busy as bees making sure the guests had everything they needed. The cakes they made were awesome and the food was delicious. The punch is exceptional and the chocolate fountain was a huge hit. The bride and groom were extremely pleased as were all the guests, and this grandmother was smiling. Everything was affordable and worth every penny.

I reached out to call the shop a couple days to confirm my appointment, since we traveled from out of state to be with family. I called during work hours and was never able to get someone to answer the phone. The answering message said to text, so I did. (It's the owner's iPhone - not even a business phone). She answered and confirmed my appointment immediately. I had a weird feeling about this appointment for the next couple of days, since I had seen several previous reviews stating she kept rescheduling appointments, only to never see the client. Morning of my appointment and she reached out saying she needed to reschedule my appointment. We were disappointed to say the least.

Baby was not cooperating at our first visit and we were only able to get a few pictures, but Lisa happily re-scheduled us to come back a few weeks later, and we're so pleased with the outcome! Our day-of host, Pete, was very courteous and helpful. We did have trouble getting management to respond to our emails and texts in the months leading up to the wedding. At one point, we didn't hear back for a full month. We also were told during our initial tour that the sound systems installed in the chapel and reception hall would be available to use, but were later told that we couldn't use the sound systems that are permanently installed, and rather we had to provide our own speakers and equipment. Other than the communication trouble and speaker situation, we really enjoyed having our wedding at River Road.

The location in Anna, TX is remote enough to make it feel secluded. Set off a country road, there is plenty of open field parking. From what I could see, there was the main reception building and the outdoor wedding space was across the creek. Upon arrival to the reception area, very nice, top of the line golf carts were waiting to chauffeur guests to the outdoor ceremony area. The ceremony took place outdoors past a small creek where there was a quaint bridge. The seating was set up in neat rows where the centerpiece had a lovely antique chandelier. There was also a mic set up and outdoor speakers so the vows could be easily heard as well as music to bookend the ceremony. Our friends who got married are huge Anglophiles and they chose "London Calling" by The Clash to take their first walk down the aisle as man and wife. Great touch! For the reception, the building has lots of long tables and some round ones. There was also a dance floor space. The only thing I would say here, is I wish there were some noise abatement measures. While there were speakers to amplify the toasts and speeches, the large space was too boomy to hear with clarity. Other than that, the space was very nice. There are also rooms to the sides of the main room for the bridesmaids and groomsmen to get ready. The restrooms were also very clean and well maintained. Overall, I thought River Road Venue was a lovely place to attend a wedding and had beautiful grounds. I would definitely love to attend another wedding here again sometime.

I dropped my ring off and that lady was amazing, she talked me through everything, she was great. But then I got a call... and was told 4 times that my ring was made from lab rubies/diamonds.... it felt like a slight, I know they had to test it but I dont get why she asked if I knew or why I was getting a phone call with that being the primary conversation.... when they were focusing on tightening the prongs.. I was well aware I had a lab grown ruby and diamonds.... doesn't make me any less but it felt like she tried too.. Then im told that my ring will be out for 3-4 weeks if I keep in house, if they send it out it'll be less time... I wanted to think about it, then decide to send it out and im told it'll still be 3-4 weeks.. mixed info but okay sure im still on board... then on that same phone call I ask if they know exactly how long and if I can hold it until they work on it and she goes 'no, why?' And I say 'well it's my wedding ring....' and she goes 'ok, why?' And I said 'because I want to wear my wedding ring' At this point I dont understand why I have to justify wanting to wear my wedding ring...... So then I decide to send my ring out, I get no updates.... I had to message them and ask when it was coming in and then was told 'it comes back next thursday we'll send you updates'.... and they did not... I had to respond today on the day of and let them know im coming, to which they finally responded it was ready... One lady was nice, but the lack of customer service, the remarks regarding my ring and the inability to do as they say and follow up, assures I wont be going back. They did a good job on my ring but im not going back.
