Tried this place on a recommendation from a friend. The food was excellent. We loved the garlic Nana bread. I had the salmon curry. Snuggled away in the foothills of Johnston lies an amazing place for Himalayan and Indian cuisine. With a pepper for the "J", The Punjab calls to you from the road. Come in! Sit down! Relax with meeeee! Eat some of the best Indian food of your life. Not joking. We're going to do this review in reverse because in my opinion we're saving the absolute best for last. It will be worth the wait, I promise. Time Machine ignition......go. We left full and smiling as we waked out to our car. We had just finished two (yes two) incredible desserts. My wife who is chocolate lava cake fanatic HAD to lay claim to that choice, while she passed on her knowledge of Carrot Hawla to me and suggested I get that for myself. I have to admit, a carrot based dessert would never be my first choice but this was like nothing I had ever tasted. Rich, creamy, savory and sweet with just enough cooked pistachio texture to keep it interesting. Truly a very unique treat. The lava cake was smaller but don't let that deter you from getting it. Warm and gooey, chocolatey and delicious, with 2 scoops of ice cream to accompany it, made this the perfect choice. On to the entrees. We had the Veggie Korma and Palak Paneer. Now this the main event and it had every right to hold the championship belt. The Veggie Korma came out super fresh, garnished in steam. It smelled awesome! You know when you want to just dive right in but your brain tells you to chill because you KNOW you'll burn your tongue? Welp. Dove - in. Tongue - tingley. Regrets - none. The veggies were cooked very well and there were plenty of them, which is always a plus. Now, can I try and describe the Palak Paneer as accurately as possible? Well imagine little pillows of cheese tucked into some of the most velvety green tastiness you've ever seen. The only thing more iconic than Punjab's velvety green paneer goodness might be Scarlett O'Hara's green velvet curtain dress from Gone With the Wind. So there. Now where it all began for me. Where I became a believer, a fan, a die hard follower of this restaurant. "But Dan, didn't you say that we're going backwards with this review? Isn't this the appetizers? Like, the first things you ordered?" YES, YES, a hundred times YES!!! We chose the Punjab Veggie Platter first because we figured it would give us a chance to take a flavor trip through some different options. And let me just say, you're trippin' if this trip doesn't pack some much needed flavor and variety in your life. It had a little bit of everything from cauliflower to potato based magic morsels. Oh man. Oh man. Oh man. This is the moment we've been waiting for. The Paneer Johl Momo. * They're steamed dumplings filled with cheese and onion and magic and dreams and wishes and straight A's on your report card and memories of your first kiss and seeing the stars at night when you're out in the countryside with no light pollution and seeing the new tulips just poking their lil' heads out in early spring......all of that. Plus it comes delicately bathed in a spicy rich light sauce that will alter your reality (for the better) with every single bite, sip, and dip. This was possibly one of the best appetizers I have had ever. Like EVER ever. Seriously. And now we find ourselves at the very beginning. This place is spectacular. From the wood floors, bar, and furniture, to the cool motorcycle wine rack. The decorations and atmosphere are very cozy and welcoming and the staff is elite. They were working like a well oiled machine from the time we sat down until the moment they all wished us a fond farewell (and I mean ALL! Even the kitchen staff said goodbye, waived, and said "Thank You!") This place is a MUST TRY!! Or a MUST RETURN FOR MORE!! Or a OH EM GEE HOW DID I NOT COME HERE SOONER???? If you blink, you might miss it--that's what I thought in the beginning but I have seen how popular this place has become in about a year's time. Being open to new food adventures, the first time my husband and I came here was to partake of the breakfast buffet. The owners are gracious and helpful--describing each item we were interested in, on the buffet spread. We also enjoyed mango lassi to complement the food. (The ownership has changed but the food is the same quality.) What sets this place apart from other Indian places is the Himalayan aspect. One cannot find much of that in this area. The Chicken Momo is so very similar to Chinese dumpling, it crosses over most food preferences. The Lemon Rice is my favorite--basmati with fragrant hint of lemon. I thought it went well with the savory curry-based dishes. But of course, they have usual favorites featuring both chicken and lamb (if you are into the latter). If you are fan of Indian food, this deserves your try. read more

This Indian spot is like a small whole in the wall with tasty food. The young owner can be seen running the whole front of the house by himself. However he is very pleasant and takes his time with all the guests. He does need some front of the house help but he will find it. The food can range from mild to heavy spice- so know your limit. The portions are good and the prices are good. The only thing is I wish they had a variety basket of Naan. But the sauces that they serve with the Naan are like jam. So good!! I thoroughly enjoy this little spot! First, the name is just fun to say! PUNJAB! Not to be confused with Daddy Warbucks 8' tall body guard. I am fairly certain they are referring to one of the 4 regions that comprise India. The northwest area to be exact! The food is so succulent and flavorful. Every dish I have had here appears to have been cooked slowly and deliberately. Whether vegetarian or meat, SO GOOD! I enjoy mixing and matching sauces with various rices and fried vegetarian foods. Never a bad bite! The buffet is rather small, but dynamite comes in small packages for certain! AND it comes with unlimited Naan!! FOR THE WIN! I'm not sure I have met a friendlier staff. What's not to love about Punjab Indian Cuisine. First time here and we will be back! Went her on a weekend afternoon for lunch. Our server was the owner who checked in on us multiple times, refilled our waters quickly, and helped us make decisions on what to get! Everything was delicious and came out quickly. My party and I left completely full, I wasn't even able to finish half the dish I ordered. Lamb Vindaloo was the perfect amount of spice for my brother and I, but we love spice. My boyfriend thought it was too spicy, so beware if you can't handle spiciness. You can also request the chefs to put less spice in your dish as well! Methi Chicken was delicious! It is herby so folks that don't like that flavor should steer clear. It was creamy otherwise and the chicken was perfectly tender. Chicken Tikka Masala was great as well! For spice lovers, definitely request for it but other than that we got some tender chicken and it was great with the Naan. Owner recommends getting garlic naan with it next time though. So sorry for the bad pictures, the food was so amazingly delicious we couldn't even wait to take the picture. That garlic naan was so amazing, I enjoyed every single bite. So fluffy, garlicky, buttery, with a slight crunch from the toast on the bottom. We've never had chicken momo before, but I am so glad we tried it. The dough was so chewy and delicious. The filling was perfect. I could eat a bowl of these dumplings everyday for the rest of my life and not get tired. I love how they offer a choice for how spicy to make it. We like it on the spicier side (but I know some people don't like heat). We ordered the lamb vindaloo (medium-hot) it was so good! Perfect heat. The lamb was so flavorful and tender, melted in my mouth. Chicken korma is my all time favorite. They did not disappoint, every single bite was better than the previous. (Heated up the next day and tasted even better, if that's even possible). Wonderful little spot, service was top notch and helpful. One thing 2 know is that you can ask them to go in the middle of the spice levels, we went middle and this Eskimo was feeling the heat directly from Punjab. Next time I'll ask for a level down from mid. Recommend doing the Samosa's on the app list with the yogurt dressing, out of this freaking world! Stopped in for lunch and had an amazing meal! Cauliflower 65 was well sauced and delicious, honey ginger and garlic cilantro Naan were heavily garnished and absolutely fantastic. We shared 2 lunch specials - chicken masala and chicken korma - both were incredibly flavorful and seasoned perfectly. I love the fact that they asked whether we wanted our dishes "mild, medium or hot" and the medium was perfect for us. The spice was definitely there but not so strong that it was unbearable. The servers were polite and welcoming and the space is really cute! I look forward to returning for dinner and trying some of the Himalayan dishes! read more

A great layout for the dining area and an ample lounge area. The decor is well thought out and appealing. Jarred spices sitting in jars on wall mounted shelves were a nice touch. A very welcoming manager and great service staff. They're more than willing to make recommendations if you're new to Indian cuisine. The menu is varied and all items we tried had a great mix of house made spices. We had paneer (a firm cheese) in both an appetizer and main dish. It didn't disappoint. Turns out it's also homemade. The food was amazingly good. Complex layers of spice that don't "flatten" out after a few bites. Tucked away in a little plaza is this newly established place. If you've been to this location before, you'll be familiar with it's warm interior. There is a large bar and plenty of seating to accommodate large parties. After we got our drinks and ordered, we were served with a complimentary mini appetizer.. well seasoned, breaded and crispy, deep fried smooth mash potato balls. They remind me of a potato croquette. We ordered the vegetable samosa to start off with. The samosa dough tasted homemade and they were served crispy and piping hot. The flavorful filling was well textured and mixed. They are now one of my favorites. Dinner consisted of garlic naan, ginger honey naan, Chicken Tikka Masala & Chicken Biryani. The naan was fresh but not my favorite. The Masala portion seems small, but what it lacks in size it packs in flavor! I ordered the Biryani "hot" and was it.. we were sweating! But it was steaming fresh and good portion. This is the real deal. Everything we got was delicious best Indian restaurant in RI so far. The vindaloo is spicy but we love that! Only thing that i would skip is the lentil soup it was ok but lacked flavor in comparison to other dishes. The samosas were so flavorful crunchy outside and soft inside and the red topping was the perfect spice! The tomate garlic soup was excellent perfect for cold night. First time here. Tried several dishes and two breads. First, the tomato onion chutney is amazing and the raita is good and quite tangy. Vegetable samosa were fresh and homemade. The chicken tikka masala is excellent and we ordered all dishes mild. Lamb korma is good but the lamb was very very mild and probably America Lamb. If you haven't tried it yet, you're missing out! There was too much food for one sitting for us, so we took it home and had it for dinner the next night. Just as good as it was at the restaurant. If it your first time trying this type of cooking, don't be afraid to tell them. The waitress took her time explaining the differences between the dishes and heat levels.
