I wandered in today in need of a simple condolence card. I have for years purchased all my stationery exclusively, and often gifts, in this quaint local store. Today the young woman (cashier) at the counter was kind and helpful, but I had forgotten cash, had only a card and didn't meet the minimum purchase requirement ($8). I decided to pass on the card and return on another day to get it with cash, but the young lady at the counter turned and asked the dark haired heavy set woman if it would be okay to make an exception. Another woman (Possibly the owner??) was rude and dismissive in her tone when speaking to me, saying, "This one time, but we really do prefer cash". I ended up purchasing the card and picked up a small set of notecards by the register - I felt bad for the cashier during the exchange. I'm a small business owner; I get it - but I was about to walk out and return another day for the same purchase. It wasn't a big deal until she (owner??) was rude in her tone of voice and the glare she shot me. This is the second time I encountered that attitude, so I think I'm going to start looking elsewhere for my stationery. It's a shame because I do like to shop local. read more

I liked that everywhere I look there is something interesting to look at. The table displays are arranged by theme so you can easily find related items all clustered together. I especially liked the shore bird table with different knick knacks of birds you can see in Monterey. Different things available were very soft tea towel, spoon holders, fancy matchboxes, notepads, mugs, magnets, stickers, and coasters. Another table in the front was the holiday table with Halloween-themed gifts. Other themes included California bear, a dogs dolphin/whale, and honey bees. I recently went gift card shopping at my local Barnes and Nobles and I had a hard time finding a nice birthday card. I was pleased to see many different types of cards and even some that are hand painted for a reasonable price! If I lived nearby, I would stop by for unique gift cards and note cards. They also have a small section of wax and wax seals and some colored pencils, erasers, and sharpeners. The store is small and full of potential gift items, but that also meant it was a little narrow and I had to wait or go around the tables to navigate through the store. That said, the other customers were friendly and polite. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I walked away with a shorebird tea towel and some hand-painted gift cards. read more

Plethora of cards in all genres. Fabulous gift wrap, bags and bows. I also find exactly what I'm looking for her and then some. Only issue I have is the pricing of some items can be a little obscure and frustrating to keep asking the sales staff "how much is this". First off parking, plentiful street parking (yes times you have to hunt, tourist spill over from Monterey). Staff Amazing, helpful far from over powering, easy going atmosphere. This is one of my "must stops" when visiting Pacific Grove. They have a wonderful selection of cards, gifts, wax seals, etc.

First off, the store has nice merchandise but crowed to peruse and overpriced. Still I've enjoyed browsing and making purchases over the years. The customer service is bland if not aloof at best. But still I persist to give local business my custom. But that changed today. Each year my husband buys me beautiful glass ornaments from the Quill. This year he bought me one that I already had. So, I came in to swap it for another along with additional $60 worth of goods. They wouldn't take the $14 ornament back and told me very crisply that its posted AND on our receipt that they don't take holiday items back for refund, exchange or "gasp" to be courteous. Funny thing is EACH year that have this ornament for sale, it's not like they don't have this years inventory going back into storage to pull out for the next season. I mean they weren't going to lose money on me. But they have, because I left the rest of my purchases on the counter. The sales person looked surprised that I wasn't going to buy more. The Quill is happy (well maybe not happy since they don't seem to have the ability to smile) to take your money. But not so happy to oblige smart business practices to retain a good (but now extinct customer.) read more

Awesome Customer Service!! We lost a beloved small bat stuffed animal (which the company has discontinued), so I was frantically searching for a replacement and stumbled across the-quill.com. The website is gorgeous and extremely easy to navigate. Their page indicated that they had precisely the bat we wanted, and I was overjoyed. The ordering process was one of the best/easiest/most-user-friendly that I've ever used. I was willing to give an "unknown" place a try, since my experience thus far had been so exceptional. (I tend to limit my online shopping to only a few places.) The amount of correspondence I received after the order hit the perfect balance---not so much to make me go "enough now!!" and not so little that I was left wondering if my order was really happening. The product arrived perfectly, in minimal (environmentally friendly!) but secure packaging. Unfortunately, it was the wrong-size bat!! It was medium (not small) so I quickly sent off an email (on a Sunday). I certainly didn't expect any response until a weekday---but then about one hour later I got a beautiful response! They had forgotten to update the size on their website when they got a new shipment (mistakes happen, and this is totally understandable); they were apologetic, kind, professional; and they resolved my dilemma completely, efficiently, and generously. Outstanding customer service!! In any event, I can *most highly* recommend this small business, because there are clearly *real human beings* close-at-hand, and this is such a wonderful and uncommon experience these days. Stephanie Loftus and The Quill are FABULOUS! I got married last Fall in Carmel and when searching for a place to have custom invitations made, I quickly realized it would be a challenge. Small, personal stationary shops are a dying breed. Paper Source and Papyrus are great shops, but as far as invitations are concerned you're pretty much left on your own to pour through endless sample books, or are helped by a staff member (in my experience) who isn't very knowledgable. Enter Stephanie and The Quill. A beautiful breath of fresh air! Stephanie will sit down with you in her adorable studio at The Quill and, while she does use sample books from her high-quality vendors, she will expertly guide you through the books and narrow down options for you based on your preferences. She designed a GORGEOUS invitation suite for me as well as day-of cocktail napkins, guest towels for the bathroom, ceremony programs, table numbers, personalized dinner menus, and thank you cards. My guests were truly blown away at how beautiful our invitations were...I may have received more compliments on those than any other part of the wedding! :-) As for Stephanie herself - you will absolutely not find anyone more knowledgable (she knows EVERYTHING about wedding and invitation etiquette!), professional, and kind. I'm very particular and had a LOT of questions along the way and a LOT of changes I wanted made. Stephanie was nothing but patient and efficient with me the entire time we worked together. She is the epitome of class and elegance, as is her shop. She's a Carmel native as well so is also very knowledgable about the Monterey/Carmel wedding industry in general. I loved, loved, loved working with her!! And of course, The Quill is a huge slice of heaven for anyone who drools over beautiful stationary, high-quality gifts, and so much more! I fell in LOVE with this store. Decent selection of all things stationary: journals, planners, pens, pencils, markers, big selection of cards, and they had wrapping paper and ribbon on spools so you could get just enough, loved that. The rest of the shop was packed full of unique gifts: books, lots of candles and soaps, funny socks, scarves, knick knacks and tchotchkes, the last of their christmas ornaments/decorations on sale. I love going into The Quill for birthday cards and gifts. They always have unique/beautiful options to choose from. My son loves all the stuffed animals and book. The invitations are beautiful every time! I had my wedding invitations done there and have since gone back for multiple invitations since including birthdays and baby showers. She really is professional and sweet and has always had my stuff completed on time and as we had talked about. I highly recommend going to the Quill for invitations, cards and gifts! Cute place, not so friendly staff. Walked in two ladies working tonight on April 25th, no actual customers. They did not say hello, no may we help you? So I just decided to ask about looking at wedding invitations. Saying I have heard about the studio for wedding invitations. She rudely responded, you need an appointment. Okay? Well how can I go about that, online. In such a rude tone. I was turned off by this place and now I am going to spend my money else where. The Quill did our wedding invitations as well as our escort cards for our wedding in September. Stephanie was far and away my favorite vendor to work with. She is extremely organized and helps guide the process for those of you who don't know what you're looking for (I was clueless!). The end product were the most elegant wedding invitations I've ever seen. We received more compliments on our invitations than I could count!! We are so in love with our invitations we will be framing them as a keepsake to hang up in our house. Their shop is also adorable. I've purchased candles and books there! I have loved the Quill from the days they occupied a tiny bit of Grand....Now to see they've expanded & moved onto bigger and better without losing the small-shop feeling. Its nice to see a locally-owned and operated boutique store with first-class service and products. I have bought out every piece they have in certain styles of cardstock/invites/greeting cards at times! My mom started mii on that habit of hording greeting cards to have "Just in case". She passed down a ton of those Current/Hallmark card packs from the 80's to mii as a upcycle my own greeting cards at times too. so if the Quill has an awesome Thank You or Birthday card, i'll skip making my own and just buy All 3, 4, or 5 they have! :) I used a vendor they carry for ALL of my wedding paper needs for my wedding in 2003. I did all my own save the dates, invites, thank you cards, menu's and programs, kids programs, note cards---everything! The paper products were from a company called Envelopments....The Quill still carries their products today. love that. I was back in force in 2009 buying all the papers to do a friends wedding invites! I often pickup mothers'day gifts, gifts for my sister (a cheer/football/baseball/dance/field hockey mom & local business owner) who happens to be just as crazy as I am about the Quill :) they're great for baby gifts too. Back to the customer service, its amazing! whenever I did buy out anything I wanted more of, they were wonderful about ordering more and letting mii know when I could pick up special orders. The gifts they carry are always the cutest, latest, most stylish, high-quality, fun and often-useful! So wish I had an unlimited budget....I get myself way to spend-happy whenever I go in. there are often unique jewelry pieces made by local artisans. You cannot go wrong bringing yourself by to check out all the Quill has to offer! unless you're bad about sticking to your budget, then go by and window shop after hours like mii! ;) so much looks like it fell straight out of a Martha Stewart magazine/Pottery Barn catalog/better than etsy's because you can hold and see what you're considering purchasing. and they are nice too. highly recommend. just wish more of it fit into my budget! ;) :) read more

This is one of those adorable little shops where you find plenty of items that you'd be THRILLED to give (or get!) as gifts. You know, the kinds of items that make other guests jealous that they didn't bring such a unique gift? Haha Their sweet and special collection includes some of the following categories: birthday party items ("forever young" candles), baby/kid items (stuffies, books, baby blankets, memory albums), large array of cute non-Hallmark cards, section of wrapping paper and gift bags (those cool large sheets of wrapping paper that you purchase by the sheet). Several journals and paper products (notepads, colorful journals, pens). Some kitchen trinkets and cookbooks (cutting boards, cookbooks with beautiful covers). A selection of socks with some adult words on them (aka swear words). Good-smelling lotions. Colorful leather wallets. Seriously, I think there's something here for everyone. Prices are higher than Target, of course, but definitely still affordable. Whoever curates the items sold here does a fabulous job of picking things that I haven't even seen in similar stores. Once we started digging through their paper selection, no one offered to help. Was a bit disorganized in the paper section, but the rest of the store was clean and organized.
