ElizabethW was my last stop during a lovely 3-day getaway to Carmel with my family. I was looking for a birthday gift for a friend and was delighted by the selection and attentive staff. The products are upscale, charming, and unique -- everything from home diffusers to artisan soaps to gorgeous tote bags and gourmet kitchen items. They also have a lovely jewelry display in the front room. *Exactly* my kind of shop and I was in heaven!
Why only 1 star? I was treated like a nobody at checkout. There is one cash register and there were only two people in line -- a lady in front of me, and me with my 10-year-old daughter. For some reason, it took 15-20 minutes for the sales associate to complete the customer's transaction (not sure why, since she didn't have any exchanges/returns.). But I wasn't in any hurry and was fine with waiting. The associate even said to me with a smile, "Thanks for your patience. I'll be with you in a moment." I responded, "No problem! Take your time." Smiles, pleasantness all around.
After the sales associate finally finished the transaction, a blonde manager lady suddenly swooped in and said, "Let's get this line moving so these people can get on with their day." I'm like, great!! - and I move up to the cash register. But instead of helping me, she starts ringing up some random person who had NOT been anywhere in the vicinity of the line -- an impatient-looking older blonde lady with an $80-dollar room freshener. UMMMMM, hello?! I've been waiting here patiently for a solid 15-20 minutes with my arms full of merchandise, and I was *obviously* in line RIGHT BEHIND the previous customer: Facing forward, 18 inches behind the lady in front of me, clearly in line formation...I was NOT fiddling with my iPhone, I was NOT browsing while waiting. I was waiting patiently, looking toward the cash register expectantly. But, you're just going to skip over me and help some random customer jump the line? Really?
I was so taken off guard that I was speechless. Normally, I'll speak up if someone has skipped over me in line because it's usually an honest mistake, something along the lines of, "Oh, actually I think I was next." But this time, it was so egregious and deliberate that I was stunned into silence. I couldn't believe I had waited that long only to be slapped in the face. It was like a huge F U. Neither the sales associate nor the blonde lady manager (nor the line-jumping customer, who was clearly the entitled rich-b!tch type) cared that my daughter and I were *obviously* standing right there in next-in-line position....and had BEEN there for a solid 20 minutes by then.
Maybe I didn't look rich enough or distinguished enough -- or WHITE enough (I'm Asian) -- to be treated like a real person. Now, I'm not one to use the R word lightly. In fact, I go through life feeling pretty chill and positive, and I pride myself on always giving people the benefit of the doubt. I always assume FIRST that people are decent and NOT racist....and 95% of the time, I'm right -- people generally are pretty wonderful. But in this case, I was disappointed. It was EXCEEDINGLY OBVIOUS that I was next in line AND I had been waiting a very long time to check out AND the sales associate had even acknowledged my patience for waiting. It can't have been age discrimination because I do not look like a punk kid -- I'm in my 40s, and I always dress respectfully/with style -- plus I had my freakin' tween-age daughter with me. So, I have no choice but to assume that the color of my skin led the manager and sales associate to give preferential service to the other customer. Utterly disheartening and infuriating.
As enamored as I am with ElizabethW's offerings, I won't be going back. Shame. I'm also disappointed that this experience left such a bitter taste in my mouth at the end of an otherwise fabulous trip to Carmel. Stay classy, ElizabethW. read more
