Yesterday, however, was a completely different experience. It was my 19 year old daughter's first time shooting a gun, and she was already very anxious. Unfortunately, what should have been a positive introduction turned into a stressful and upsetting experience due entirely to one staff member. When we arrived, we rented two lanes -- one for my daughter and me, and one for my minor son (16) and an adult male friend. Everyone except my daughter had been there before. When we got to the lanes, staff member Bruce began questioning us. I explained that it was my daughter's first time and that she might need some extra help because she was nervous. Instead of being supportive, Bruce immediately became aggressive and started yelling. He then went over to my son's lane and escalated further, getting into my minor son's face. The adult male with us asked him to please back up and be respectful. Bruce responded by getting into the adult's face and yelling even louder. We asked to speak with a supervisor. Bruce followed my friend to the office and continued invading his personal space until the supervisor finally told Bruce to back up. By that point, my friend was understandably upset and chose not to continue shooting. My son shot a few rounds, but the situation had already soured the experience. Thankfully, another staff member later helped my daughter calmly and respectfully, and she was able to learn how to shoot for the first time in a supportive environment. That staff member was professional and deserves recognition. It's extremely unfortunate because prior to this visit I would have given this range five stars and praised the staff. One person completely changed that. For a new shooter -- especially a young, anxious one -- being yelled at and treated aggressively is unacceptable. Be aware of who is working when you visit. Our experience would have been entirely different had we not encountered Bruce.

Great success! This was my first time going to a shooting range, so I had a range of emotions…read moregoing. I went with a friend of mine, as he's more experienced than me and had been promising we'd go. We pulled up and I was surprised, mainly because I always thought shooting ranges were indoors (this one isn't). As you can see by my pictures, there's two levels. The lower one consists of shooting for pistols and rifles. The upper level was for trap shooting and archery. We pulled in on the lower level to check in, which was super simple. They have these electronic machines to register and once completed, you go to the attendant to pay. Keep in mind it's cash only! We paid a total of $10.00 (5 a piece) which was a score! After we paid, we drove to the upper level and were greeted by the trap shooting attendant. He went over the rules and gave us pointers to help us be successful. This was only my second time doing this but my first ever doing it at a range. The pointers I got really helped as I hit two, which I never did previously! For hitting the target, I was given this really cool pin! Once we were finished, we used these cool magnet things to pick up the shell casings. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and can't wait to come back!

Never heard back from them. I had to call my CC company to formally dispute the charges. Very frustrating and disappointing service. They seem to make it difficult to cancel. When I signed up for this course, I didn't have any idea what to expect. I have not shot a gun…read moresince my time in the service in the Viet Nam era 1970s, and I am more than a little nervous about having one. My wife made me take the course because she is concerned that, as a club musician, I am an easy target. After all, I am the last person on the street (usually downtown or in Soulard), just got paid, and am carrying valuable amplifiers and other easily pawnable equipment. After all, my $1,200 amp will easily pawn for $25 anywhere by some douchebag meth head. So I purchased a handgun (9mm Glock 43) and took the class. It was located in a pretty run-down American Legion Hall in Maryland Heights, and was taught by an older gentleman, Dennis, who is a certified NRA instructor. At first, this made me more concerned because I am not a supporter of the NRA. He said that he was actually the youngest member of this AL post. He was really knowledgeable about all things gun-related. He is a veteran, experienced hunter, and an excellent instructor. The classroom portion of the course took 6 hours, and they actually flew by. There were only 6 students, and everyone was polite, interested, and participated in all the exercises and discussions, which covered everything from beginner (me) to advanced gun-owning. I truly learned a lot, from how to properly handle the pistol, to how to actually carry a concealed weapon, important legalities, and various scenarios and how they can play out in real life situations. Since there is no firearms range on the premises, we then caravanned to the Gateway Gun Club, where we shot 20 rounds in practice, then another 20 rounds, of which 15 must hit the target. Dennis was there supervising, and ensuring that each of us were safe and skilled enough to pass the shooting portion of the course. It would have been nice if the AL Hall would have had a range, but I really have no complaints at all. He helped me refine my grip and I put all 20 rounds in the silhouette, with 3 actually hitting the bullseye! My only real complaint is that once I completed the course, I had to take my paperwork to the St. Louis County Police Department in Clayton, which is currently like navigating through an obstacle course of barricades and narrowed streets. Now I just have to wait several weeks for approval and then go back there to pick up my official card. Cost was $85 for the course and $90 to the Police Dept. I appreciate everything I learned and may go back for the advanced course.

I have never touched a gun in my life. In fact, up until now, they kind of freaked me out. I just never had that exposure. I knew going from nothing to a certified gun-toter might be a bit of a challenge. Enter St. Louis CCW. I found them online and it didn't take long from navigating the website to realize this would be the perfect place to start. I signed up for an Intro to Handguns class. This business is a husband-and-wife-run operation out of their own home in Prairie, MO. As down-to-earth as a business could possibly get. They have converted their large garage into a classroom, and have a shooting range in their backyard they built themselves. Greg and Leilani Pugh were incredibly friendly. From the moment Leilani offered me a beverage when I arrived to when she offered me one of her chicken salad sandwiches she'd just made before I left, I felt very welcomed. For $50, I received a two-hour semi-private class - one hour of classroom instruction and one hour of range shooting. It was only me and one other guy, so we got very personalized instruction. Greg and Leilani are constantly doing classes, which enables the class sizes to be small, and for them to be flexible with class times, which is a great benefit to the student. Greg started out by asking me where I'm coming from and where I want to go, and I appreciated how he wanted that insight so he can better serve me in the class. Greg was a fantastic teacher. He's personable and entertaining, and clearly knows his stuff - and I know that it's one thing to know what you're talking about, but quite another to be able to convey it to others in a way that they can learn. His classroom instruction, which was a combination of lecture with a Power Point presentation, demonstration, and hands-on dry fire practicing, was engaging and easy to understand. I was then able to shoot some live ammunition out on the range with both a revolver and a semi-automatic (I got through 20 rounds of the revolver and 40 on the semi-automatic). They provided the guns and ammunition. It was great exposure and practice for me. I went from being a little nervous to even touch the damn thing in the beginning, to hitting a bullseye on the target before I left. Success! The Pughs don't list the place's address or phone number on their website - understandably they want to be pretty private because it's their home. When you fill out the form to request a time for your class, Greg sends you back an email pretty promptly, which includes his phone number, and a map to his place. One thing to note - this place is FAR. I did a dumb thing and glanced at the map, said, "Oh, it's right off of 44, that will take me 20, 30 minutes tops." WRONG. I should have appreciated the fact that the map was there to tell me how to get there and was NOT to scale. Duh. This place is about an hour away. So, Stupid Me was late. Luckily they were cool about it, and didn't cut my time short or start without me, which is what I feared. So if you live the in City, expect about an hour commute each way. TL;DR version: Even though this place is a bit of a drive, it's worth every minute and every penny. If you are like me and want a wonderfully thorough, individualized introduction to handguns, look no further. It's not a big fancy range by any means, but it is the perfect environment for learning. They also offer a CCW class that is 8 hours long, and includes lunch. I'm sure he's got a wealth of information to share, and I'm greatly looking forward to it.

School of Rock summer camp is one of the experiences that launched my daughter's musical life. She…read moredid her first camp there at the age of eight and subsequently had the courage to audition for multiple musicals and other performances. She's now done solos in her school talent show and had principal roles in musical theatre shows. These camps are perfect for beginners who show an interest in music and want to give it a try. It's a full week of fun and some instruction, plus exposure to what it takes to get up on stage and perform with with band. A child who wants to play an instrument or sing should definitely experience this. It's an encouraging, energetic environment. Make sure you plan to attend the performance at the end of the week because it's a big deal to the kids. And get there early to get a seat because both years my daughter did the camp, it ended up being standing room only.
