Just wanted to write an update because I see that a lot of people reviewing here confuse BroadStage…read morewith SMC Theater. It is the same PHYSICAL venue, but not the same organization. So, some people who are reviewing the programming or staff are actually reviewing SMC, not BroadStage or vice versa. I have never attended an SMC performance so I can't speak to their programming or staffing, but BroadStage has very interesting programming & very kind staff. Since BroadStage programming is so eclectic, though, some of it just isn't of interest to me. Different strokes....

Lovely venue but sometimes the artists or productions chosen to take the stage are disappointing…read more I've had the experience now twice of going to a show based on genre and marketing and having to sit through performances that feel like they were brought in to cater to a very specific, very small but obviously inner circle community. Choose wisely what you come for. If your intuition tells you this artist was maybe brought in simply on connections and what community they're a part of then listen to your gut. I say all of this because there are so many deserving and talented productions out there that deserve and would love the privilege of being paid to perform here but to see the opportunities squandered on the same old stories and inner circle artists is enough for me to think long and hard before buying tickets to this theatre again.

I have younger friends who currently volunteer for CalPhil and it's just horrible for them. The music and the ambience is GREAT , so if you're up for a concert or anything...CalPhil is the place for you. Maestro Victor Vener does a good job introducing each song with some sort of anecdote , personal experience or what not. He's a great guy. The orchestra itself is pretty good too. Music/Concerts = 5 of 5 Volunteer Experience = -1 (I vowed to never come back after my first year...it is beyond disorganized)

There's something intimidating or out-dated about orchestras. Or maybe it's because there's so…read moremany other things to experience here in Southern California that I forget their existence? Perhaps it's just me, but going to a see something in the classical music category is not the first inspiration that leaps to mind... However, I'm really glad I did. I mean, I've been to the Hollywood Bowl, but not for classical stuff. And the H-Bowl has such a bigger reputation that I wasn't even aware of Cal Phil...until my boyfriend's mother decided to celebrate her wedding anniversary with one of their Festival on the Green concerts. Firstly, since I am totally 100% adverse to traffic congestion and paying for parking, the parking situation for Festival on the Green (its last year at the Arboretum) was delightfully within my budget: FREE. I parked off one of the adjacent streets (watch out for free-range peacocks!), and (dangerously) jay-walked across Baldwin Avenue, under the watchful but non-ticketing gaze of a motorcycle cop (phew!). There, I met my party, and we sauntered off to wait in line for the gate to open. With us, we'd brought appropriate picnic gear: fold-out chairs, blankets, bags of supplies, drink, and food. Every other party in line also sported the same items. Suddenly, I got really excited by the prospect of picnicking in the warm twilight, consuming large amounts of food at a leisurely rate, and being surrounded by nature and live music. All of a sudden, it dawned on me that I ought to do this MORE OFTEN! Due to the large Asian population in the San Gabriel area, every volunteer was a local Asian teenager. That amused me for no real reason, other than the fact that I too am Asian. As soon as the gates opened, people flooded in to the lawn. Being light on my feet and competitive, I scouted ahead of my party and staked us a place right smack in the middle with a good view. There we set up camp, as the jazz trio warmed the crowd up with their opening act. The sun was still out, and it was fun to see what other's had brought for food. I set about eating a gigantic tofu salad that took me all of 90 minutes to consume. I can honestly say this grazing was really, really enjoyable. We had a little time before Cal Phil got started, and legged it to the porta-potties (very clean and non-smelly!), as well as explored the food booths (bought a huge slice of delicious carrot cake to be consumed in the dark). What was most engaging to me was Maestro Victor Vener: even though he was binoculars-away, his manner and voice was so warm and personal, it felt like he was speaking to you, the crowd, directly. He made it comfortable to enjoy the music...it was not something obtuse or esoteric. I even found myself swaying along to the music, recalling pieces from my childhood, and absolutely being riveted by those well-known, beloved orchestral pieces. I left feeling like I wanted to skip and twirl from the ambience and music! OK, so maybe I'm just easily moved, but I don't care...I definitely want to return for more enjoyable summer evenings on the Green! Thanks Cal Phil!!!

If you drive, parking can be a challenge, but there are some spots near the Gold's Gym. Venue is small, seats can be uncomfy (especially the fold aways in the front row), but otherwise a cozy venue where you do not feel overwhelmed by the stage.

I am now entering my second year in the Meisner Technique class and it has been so much more than I had expected or hoped for: - creative inspiration - a deeper understanding of the craft - valuable insights from industry professionals - an incredibly supportive community - some amazing friendships - tangible career support - the opportunity to build relationships with people in the industry But maybe more important than all those things is the fact that in showing up for class and doing the reps - and just like going to the gym, you have to put in the work - but showing up, practicing repetition, doing the independent activities and the scene work week after week, not only am I honing my skills as an actor and feeling more confident and decisive as an artist, I can feel that I'm building a deeper more foundational relationship with myself. And I get to bring this transformative work into every aspect of my life and into every relationship: family, personal, professional. I have come to understand the craft of acting now as a fearless and searching study of human behavior... and I think in order to teach it, above all, one has to love humans. John Ruskin undoubtedly, in my experience, loves humans, loves artists, poets, actors... and he loves his students. And that devotion permeates his words, his actions, his teaching, and every moment at the school. It's a woodland setting tucked away in the city. You are not going to find contemporary cutting edge theatre here, and you're not going to care either. The ensemble consists mainly of older, seasoned character actors, an up and coming rookie, and the occasional guest star. They are good at what they do. They choose old chestnut plays that still have plenty of tread on them, and are loads of fun. Forget about natural dialog. The slurred kind, with loud background noise, where you can't hear 3/4's of what the m.f. is saying. These people come from the days when actors were actors. Their vocal ranges and clarity are astonishing. I feel as if I'm listening to Richard Burton without the Welsh accent, prior to his marriage to Liz Taylor. An absolute plus is that you can arrive early and picnic here. Thank god the taco trucks haven't made it up treacherously windy Coldwater Canyon yet. BYOM: Bring your own mug. They serve Peet's coffee on the house, and the purchase of a brownie goes to support Tree People. What a fine excuse to eat a brownie.
