Improv For The People is a great word of mouth Improv class. It a nice mix of people who come from different walks of life. There are actors who book and people make their rounds on the Stand Up circuit. The Eclectic mix ranges from documentary film makers, to teachers, to rocket scientists. I am not kidding. That's not hyperbole, I am stating that quite literally. I was invited to Improv For The People by a friend of mine who used to be in a short form group with me in New York City. She ended up in LA as a working actress and wanted something uber-local since she lived in Culver City and did not want to commute very far. When she found it she would not stop talking about how awesome her class was. Eventually I audited and became a real member. The lead instructor and proprietor Matt is an effective, encouraging, instructor who can get to the heart of what improv is quite quickly and gives awesome notes. He has a knack for finding and highlighting peoples strengths and critiques in a professional and tactful where group members wind up feeling inspired and not discouraged. Another great perk of Improv For The People is Stage Time. Matt is a promoter of the "Alley Cats" show at M.I.'s Westside Comedy Theater the Santa Monica Promenade. (Yea, the really touristy one!) There aren't just "class shows" This is a real honest to goodness dues paying LA audience. Within two months I was up on stage performing with the group. Unfortunately, I had to scale back the 'hobbies' to focus on other things but I know Matt still running a cracker jack class and from what I hear now a full studio. One other awesome thing about this group is the community feel when members have performances or are involved in other things the group comes out to support one another. Sometimes the number is small and sometimes its big but the members of this studio/class really care for one another and show their support whenever work/scheduling allows them to. I think they might have moved from the Original Location which was the Fanatic Salon so check the website. And tell Matt you found it on Yelp!

This is information you need to let people know earlier in the day not wait until they waste their time and gas money and arrive at the box office. The girl running the box office was apoigetic and nice. Someone associated from the production was trying to have the people that did buy tickets be able to sit through the rehersal since it would be a full run-through. He later told me that he was overruled and it was a no go. I did receive a refund, but even the refund doesn't cover the price of gas that was spent and sitting in traffic driving there and driving back. Not to mention there are different things I could have done with my day if i wasn't going to attend this show. Astronomical unprofessionalism and zero regard for the audience's time and frankly money. If you have already purchased tickets to one of their performances I highly recommend that you confirm if the show is still going on so your time isn't wasted. I have to say out of all of the plays I have seen in LA this is one of the worst experiences I've ever had. I won't be going to any future plays put on by this production company. Do better. The lighting director and the sound engineer were busy setting everything up, and I sat silently in the darkness, watching everything come together in preparation for what was to come this weekend. Thank you, Odyssey, for welcoming plays from other cultures and languages into your theater.

I did that in November '23 and have been going every week ever since (sometimes 4 time/week). I've kinda let it take over my life because of how much fun it is, how great the people are (students and teachers) and what a nice little dance family it has become for me. Some students take classes to be able to compete in dance competitions, others just do it for the pure joy of dancing. Personally, I do it for the pure joy but the nice thing is the studio is welcoming to all people regardless of why you're taking the class. And it has been pure joy. Please do yourself a favor and come to a class. You won't regret it. Also, all the teachers are fantastic but a special shout-out to Jackie and Raul, who both teach salsa classes, among others, and who have helped foster that home-away-from-home feeling at the studio. I honestly can't thank them enough.

We took two series of classes with them and we plan to continue when time permits. We learned a classical Indian dance form that is seeped in tradition and it was also very fun! While I am of Korean descent, I never once felt odd for wanting to try kathak dance classes, even when I didn't know what kathak dance classes were when I saw a notice for them. I was really glad when I asked my 12 year old daughter if she would be interested and when she said yes so we signed up! We also had access to student videos so we can practice during the week and it was a terrific way of getting some exercise while we're safer at home. It was also wonderful being part of a community that is diverse, respectful, and kind towards each other. Plus, many of the students were from different parts of the U.S. and it was great to check in on them weekly. For out first online recital, my older sister was able to view it online and it was a real joy for her and us that she was able to watch since she lives in a different country. I wondered if it was too expensive, if it was legitimate, and if we were making the right decision. But looking back now, I can say with my whole heart that it was one of the best decisions we ever made for our daughter. My daughter stayed with the program for two years, graduated, walked the red carpet with so much confidence, and watched her graduation film on the big screen surrounded by people who believed in her. It was emotional for me as a parent because I saw how much she had grown, not just as an actress, but as a person. We chose to continue because my daughter truly loved acting. I worked extra hard to make the tuition possible, and every sacrifice was worth it because this is where she discovered her passion and found confidence in herself. Gayla creates a space where he feels comfortable asking questions, talking openly, and truly being himself. Her warmth makes her more than a coach. She is a trusted mentor. As a parent, knowing your child has that kind of support system is invaluable. She does not push. She inspires.
