Good news? Our waitress was sweet and made sure you had your coffee filled and food out and ready. For once, our food was good and warm. We left a good tip. Bad news, the owner is beyond rude. My husband has lived here his whole life, has never done anything to the man, and yet treats my hubby like trash. If you're looking for work there, don't. They don't pay enough and they're disrespectful to the waitresses especially. I've only gone here a handful of times in my life and I've never been fully impressed with the place. Should have listened to my instincts when there were only two vehicles in the parking lot at lunch time and kept on driving. The service was ok, but we ended up leaving most of our lunch on the table. We ordered cheese curds for an appetizer. Our server came back to tell us she forgot to put it in ahead of time (which wasn't a big deal), but then came back 30 seconds later with them and said that they got them done quick....yeah, there's a reason for that...the cheese wasn't even melted inside. The chicken teriyaki sandwich was simply a warmed chicken breast with a smear of fake swiss cheese (you'd think when in Monroe, WI, they could put a real piece of swiss cheese on the sandwich), and a little cup of soy sauce on the side. The Tuscan Panini came on soggy bread with canned, barely warmed mushrooms, and again, fake mozzarella cheese. Very unappetizing. We won't be going back. read more

This is one of four local breakfast restaurants I've frequented over the years (the others being Corner Cafe, Swiss Alps, and The Blue Ox), and I will be comparing The Red Apple Inn to these three. First, the food quality. This is on average somewhere between The Blue Ox and Swiss Alps. The skillets are excellent and definitely a stand out, yet occasionally the food will come cold. Food serving sizes are quite large for the price, but the drinks come in very small glasses, so you'll either not get enough water, or end up with 3+ water glasses in front of you. Overall I'd say decent depending on what you order, but I know that some customers who were regulars at Corner Cafe definitely felt a dip in quality when coming here while their preferred restaurant was under renovations. The building itself is fine. I've never found any of the four Breakfast restaurants to have bad buildings, yet if I had to place one at the bottom it would probably be this one. Occasionally dirty, but overall I would say it's more than adequate. The wait time is consistently short. We often get the check very shortly after getting food, which some may find odd or rude, yet I find this to be preferable to having to chase down a waitress or wait for minutes at a time as is often the case at The Blue Ox. Finally, the wait staff. Overall I found the wait staff to be very friendly and responsive. There is one waitress who definitely stands out (and anybody who has had her knows who I'm referencing; she's been brought up in numerous other reviews), and she certainly has her off days. She's very friendly, but if you're not a regular her quirks could definitely be jarring and perceived negatively. Just something to keep in mind going in. Overall The Red Apple Inn was pleasant, and could be considered average. The skillets are the stand out menu item, and while I've heard plenty of bad regarding dinner options, breakfast seems to be fairly good. This would rank third out of the four breakfast restaurants mentioned in the beginning. read more

Three of us today for lunch. One ordered the baked ham with pineapple. Can order a la carte, just potato and soup or salad or dinner which includes salad bar and roll. Salad bar has nice selection as well as many dressing selections. Food arrived nice and hot with good flavors. Inexplicably there was 1/3 cup of juice on plate which made it difficult to eat (drippy). Next order Hawaiian chicken sandwich with fries and soup. (2 soups available daily). Had something unexpected on sandwich. Couldn't decide what it was. Asked server who didn't know. Asked cook - Swiss cheese. No mention of cheese on menu, so no opportunity to decline while ordering. So did the pineapple ring make it Hawaiian or did cheese make it a Swiss chicken melt?? Third order - tuna melt with fries and soup. Server didn't ask and forgot to say want soup and sandwich at same time (dunker). Server took soup, presumably to put under heat lamp. So sandwich and cooled soup (not particularly appetizing arrived together. Tuna had a lot of mayo, so messy and needed great care to eat. Fries will be just a minute. Fries which normally come with sandwich finally showed up when nearly finished. Not enough people eating to explain why fries take so long. While waiting for orders had an ice water spill. Grab napkin, server Johnny-on-the-spot says will grab cloth. Silly me, I thought a spill called for some urgency, especially when it's heading to someone's lap. Server went to fill water glasses for another table. We used everyone's napkins to avert a total disaster; another server belatedly showed up with cloth. Apparently our server asked, with no urgency, another server to bring a cloth. Score food, so-so. Server- maybe I should have given one star instead of two. We ordered a combo platter and it was all burnt. When we sent it back, the owner came back out and gave us a hard time for sending it back! He told us they had to cook it that way or it would be cold! We canceled our order and left. The only positive thing about our visit was the great waitress! I left her a nice tip! read more

Went for lunch today, the wife and I. She had the bacon cheeseburger and fries, I opted for the hot beef and mashed potatoes. The gravy had an off taste and I will bet the farm the potatoes came out of a box. As for hers, said the burger had an off taste as well, leading her to think that it wasn't 100% ground beef. Our waitress was horrible, wife needed ketchup, as she didn't bring it with the order. Must have waited 2 minutes for that while the food got cold sitting there. Small family type place with a little dated atmosphere but relatively clean. Staff was friendly, quick & attentive and I didn't need to wait for anything. I ordered a small breakfast. Excellent in every way. My wife and I stopped here for breakfast and were quite pleased with both the food and the service. We were seated immediately, I never saw the bottom of my coffee cup, and our server, Tif, seemed to anticipate all of our needs. The food is fast, cheap, and you get what you pay for. It's a local hotspot for the elderly, which is why it's one of my dad's favorite breakfast spots. I usually order the gypsy skillet and it's good after you doctor it up with seasoning. The waitresses are pretty horrendous at customer service, and I grimace every time we get the same leathery old lady with dried out dyed hair. Ok, I'll admit that ordering batter-fried salmon wasn't the smartest thing I've done, however, it would've been 100x better had it not been cooked beyond burnt. The tarter sauce was ok though so that's a bonus I guess. The food portions were HUGE! I've never heard of Ala Carte coming with any sides, much less soup, roll AND a potato. The "dinner" version came with all of that plus the salad bar. I opted for a side salad instead of soup and told them to keep the rest of the food as I didn't want to waste it. DH ordered a simple breakfast of eggs over well (hard but not broken). It took 3 tries before they could get it right. The waitress, who was very apologetic and friendly, explained that they couldn't get them hard without breaking them and asked if that was ok. I explained that other restaurants could do it and that they should try again. They finally got it right- after about 30 minutes of trying.
