Went here for the first time with a group of friends who go all the time. Awesome vibe very relaxed and chill low key bar, but also a cute place to eat. My friends and I stopped in the Red Fox on a friend's recommendation, saying it was a great place to unwind and have a drink after skiing at Stratton. Oh. My. Kids. Oh, my, kids! OMK! I felt like I was drinking in the ball pit at Chuck E. Cheese's. They were everywhere! Everywhere! And loud. So loud. After slamming back a beer and a few (frozen?) appetizers, we ran out to binge drink at our chalet. I'm not sure what happens after 8PM, but unless you're looking for an early-bird special or a baby to sell on the black market, I would skip it for another bar. A nice, quaint hideaway that offers a country, log house dining room on the second floor and a cool pub on the first floor. We dined in the second floor restaurant where the atmosphere lends to a very welcoming dining experience by the fireplace in a cold winter night. It's very "Vermont" après ski type of dining atmosphere. However, after enjoying the appetizers the main dishes left a lot to be desired as did the desserts (bread pudding served cold). And the bill was equal to one for a NYC fine dining restaurant while falling short of delivering delicious food - NOT WORTH IT. One of our guests ordered a fish (all fish on the menu was farmed) and another a pork chop - the pork chop tasted exactly like the fish served to our friend. No more needs to be said on this careless cooking process. Go for the atmosphere and apps. Skip ordering too many cocktails and main courses. The apple pie is well worth it. read more

If there was a 0 that would best describe the quality of my experience at the pretentious Red Fox Inn. Let me start off by saying, the up stairs is quite lovely. But don't let its charming look fool you. We had a party of 7 and our reservation was for 5:30 ( Even though the up stairs does not open till 6) and since there is NO waiting room we were sent up stairs to be greeted by dumbfounded workers who told us the Kitchen staff was not ready so we were sent back down! Since there is no waiting room and NO place to sit down we took a seat at an empty table only to get scolded by the bar tender that other people were waiting for that seat.. mind you that the bar down stairs takes no reservations. With no place to wait, we were forced to wait in the bar where you are constantly having servers run into you and children stepping on your feet and pushing you out of the way to play the 3 arcade games they have in the corner. When we FINALY got our table ( mind you we were the FIRST ones there and only ones for about a half hour) we were shocked at the prices for their food. But, we remained optimistic in hopes of good food for this expensive place..... $38.00 for Penne a la Vodka with shrimp... the price will remain the SAME even if you don't get the shrimp! We had someone in our party order this and without the shrimp because she is allergic to shellfish. I would have liked to have thought for that price that would be the best Pene Vodka she ever had, but she complained it was missing something and Very bland. I had the special of the Tuna and that was priced around $27.00 and even that was very bland and left me unsatisfied. For the price of their food.. its NOT worth going to if you are visiting Stratton VT. They should not price their food so high when its TGI Friday's quality. We ate in the dining room last week. The facility itself is beautiful, really amazing. That's where the upside ends. The service was lackluster, our waitress was very cold and unfriendly - zero personality or hospitality. Unfortunately we had a party of 8 so they just added on the tip (such a pet peeve of mine). We had to ask for bread and got a nice annoyed look from our unhappy waitress. The food was just sad. This is by far the BEST place to go off the mountain- there is a pub with great food, and a romantic and beautiful dining room upstairs with a great wine list and the food is comfort food that hits the spot EVERY time! Every band I have seen in the tavern has been more than I ever expected to find in the middle of no where vermont- I have been plesantly surprised by this place time and again! If you dont make reservations of a weekend day, dont bother coming here. We were basically told 2-3 hours for a party of six in their upstairs dining room and about 20-40 minutes in the overcrowded and noisy bar area downstairs. We were thinking of coming the next day to the upstairs restaurant, but the 30$ entrees scared us off. Found a 30$ pre-fixe deal in a magazine found at the restaurant and asked a waitress about it. Apparently, they no longer honour this deal... thats nice. Ohh yeah, the parking situation is quite hectic with multiple one ways... so lots of potential for car damage or people getting run over as (a) some people race into the parking lot to make their reservation and (b) others leave drunk. I tend to be generous with my stars, always looking for the good. I must say though that 5 star relating was earned. The Inn is in a beautiful spot with plenty of room. The Inn has rustic charm and the Inn keepers made us feel like family staying for a reunion. Friendly and accommodating. The restaurant/ pub was open during the summer, with the main restaurant closed. The food was great, the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. We had a large crowd, up for a family wedding, and they handled it well. As loud as we got we fit right in at the pub. They canceled the amount my nephew signed for at the pub (around $250) and then claimed it was a math error and added another $100. No call. No notice. He saw it from his bank statement (used his debit card) and is now fighting it. We had been greatly disappointed with the service and poor attitude of the staff, but never expected they would try to cheat us after we left. This review is for the Tavern I have been going to the Red Fox for over a decade in both the winter and the summer, with kids and without. This is by far my favorite low key place to eat and drink in the area. The staff is VERY friendly and welcoming. The VT ambiance of the bar is wonderful. Don't expect a life changing food experience but what they do they do well. Fancy Salad, Burgers, Fish Tacos, Wings, Ribs and Fried Clams with home made tarter sauce in the summer. Know that the owner still runs the kitchen and as a South Boston native takes his clams seriously. As good as any on Cape Cod. There is a specials board with a six or so items every night. Be aware in the winter (especially during holiday weeks) the bar will be loud. Kids can and will act disorderly. The bar, pinball and foosball are all right in the dining area. If you get there after 5:30 there will be meaningful wait for a table. Smile, be nice, have a drink and deal with it. There is a reason that the Fox is always crowded and has been for multiple decades. read more

Stopped in on our way to Manchester, Vermont on the recommendation of a client. There were 5 in our party and we were starved after 5 hours of driving with no stopping for snacks , etc. when we arrived at the Red Fox it was 7 pm on a Tuesday night and the place was packed with what appeared to be golfers and locals who all appeared to know one another. Fortunately , we were seated within 20 minutes and when leaving, all 5 of us agreed the Red Fox gave each one of us a meal that was superior to most 5 star restaurants. Ironically, we are all employees in the Food and Beverage Industry with 3 members of our group being Chefs in upscale restaurants in 3 of the largest Northeast cities. Two of us had Salmon cooked perfectly, 2 in our group had one of the tastiest Duck we've ever eaten and the last member had barbecued chicken fingers, Foxtails the Red Fox calls them , which were served with homemade blue cheese dressing and were scrumptious!! In addition we all drank One of the best tap beers we've tasted, sorry can't recall the name, however, it was beer brewed locally. To end, we decided on the Apple Pie with Vanilla ice cream as we had tried this pie once before at Abe and Louie's in Boston and just couldn't pass up the opportunity to have it again. This pie was selected to be served in DC at an inaugural reception last year which speaks to just how incredibly good Ma Bean's Apple Pie really is. We even bought a whole pie to take with us. Do yourself a favor on the recommendation of our group, who obviously know what a good meal should taste like. I wish there was a no-star rating because this place has a no-star and no-class service. I went here for dinner on New Years Eve with my girlfriend and her family. We thought the place was nice so decided to return after dinner and hang out until the ball dropped. They charged $20 just to walk-in the door. Then they offered to check our coats which I thought was nice. My girlfriend and I each checked our coats and my scarf on one hanger and they gave us a ticket to claim our items at the end of the night. The end of the night comes and we hand in our ticket but our coats and scarf were missing. The coat check girl claimed that she had given me our coats and scarf (she remembered exactly what we had and described them perfectly). When I spoke to the manager, V Chhan, and told him that they were not returned to us, I showed him my claim ticket that I still had in my pocket. He told me that "the ticket doesn't matter." After much arguing, he gave me his word that he would rectify the situation. He asked us to return the next day to see if someone had taken it by mistake. When we returned the next day, the jackets were not there and V would not come out of his office to speak to us. Instead, he sent someone to ask us to give him one more day, so we did. The next day we finally spoke with V and he said he would contact his insurance company and they would rectify this. He even gave me a time table. He said that he would call insurance the next day (sunday), that they would probably get back to him on monday and then he would call me either way by tuesday. This would have been last Tuesday, January 6th. He has since then, not called me and has been refusing to return my call. I have left messages on the Red Fox's answering machine and with employees, but V never calls back. I have tried calling on January 6, 14 and 15. I have notified the Bondville Police and they have contacted the wife of the owner of the Red Fox. She told them that they are not responsible for lost items. If it was a case of e hanging my coat on a hook underneath the bar or leaving it on the stool, it would be my fault completely and I understand that. But how can a business offer a coat check service, take your coats, lose them and then not offer a refund for the lost items? Especially after giving me his word that he would contact their insurance company. This place has no class. read more

A group of eight ladies stopped here for dinner after a day of snowshoeing at Stratton Mountain and found the food and atmosphere to be just what we were looking for. The menu was small but included hearty favorites like duck, sirloin, salmon, and roast chicken. The wine list was extensive and we settled on the $40 daily bottle special of Cabernet savignon and were not disappointed. We started with some appetizers including beet salad, Caesar salad, and mushroom pattie (delicious!) The main dishes ordered varied from duck to salmon to vegetarian consomme and everyone was pleased with their dish. The highlight of the meal was dessert which we were at first too full to eat but once the mixed berry pie and bread pudding hit the table we were in heaven. There was an African band playing in the bar downstairs but we were too full and tired to stay for more than one song. I would definitely return on my next trip to Southern Vermont! read more

We felt compelled to review Red Fox Tavern after reading a review that made inflammatory, arguably defamatory, and potentially actionable remarks about a Red Fox employee (publicizing a name and making ugly allegations beyond what seems reasonable when critiquing service in a food establishment. Yikes!) ---- Anyway, we've been to Red Fox Tavern, on and off, for about a decade. It's downstairs from a restaurant above that has fine dining. The tavern has good food, but isn't fancy. It's a bar with food and amenities you'd expect in a tavern. It's casual and can get crazy busy at night during ski season. If you get there early, you are less likely to have a long wait, but they can't be expected to save tables. Once there, the majority of people tend to stay a while. It's common to see a long table full of kids eating appetizers and running back and forth to the pinball/arcade machines or foosball area while parents are at the bar area with drinks in their hands. The adults eventually sit down and order, but it can take a table quite a while to turn over, as is standard apres-ski at many taverns in ski country. Sometimes table service is fast and other times, it's slow as frozen maple syrup. You either take the walk of a few steps up to the bar to get their attention, or you wait. That's just how it is there in winter so for people who want a restaurant as opposed to a tavern, there are many other options in the area. On nights when service is so slow it is painful (not common but happens) customers always have the option of tipping accordingly, leaving, and/or not coming back again. Otherwise, you go with the flow. Apart from ski season, the place is pleasant, low key, and relaxing. Family favorites are fried clams with bellies in summer, viking mac n cheese in ski season, the burgers and tacos. Other dishes we've tried there have proven satisfying. The prices have definitely gone up in recent years, but deals can be had on themed weeknights where they do specials on burgers, tacos, and so on. Look...it's a tavern and can get insanely busy. Overall though, the food's consistent and the bar's well stocked. read more

Went to the Red Fox Inn over the weekend with a group of friends and left wishing that we had just stayed home. To the restaurant's credit, we were seated quickly and the food was fairly tasty, even if the portions were a bit small for the price. The real issue was with the service. Our party of 6 was seated and our waitress began taking drink orders. My two friends ahead of me ordered beers, I ordered the third for our table and the waitress asked if she could see our I.D.'s. No problem, we thought. But when she looked at mine, one of the newer-style NY licenses, she was very perplexed by it and said she would have to take it to her manager. (I should note here that I am 29). She was gone for about 5 minutes, handed me my license, began taking drink orders again and casually mentioned that she would not be able to serve me. Confused, I asked why not, and was told that she just hadn't seen a license like that and didn't think it was valid. My wife offered to show her license as well, which is the same newer (though greater than a year old) style but this was not sufficient proof for the waitress. Our group should have just given up and left but I pressed further and she conceded that she could bring her manager over. Her manager initially did not want to serve me either, again citing the unfamiliar style license. Our entire group asked her to reconsider, given that I am of-age and was showing them valid proof. The manager had to take my license away again and after several minutes came back and finally agreed that it was valid. During this whole, roughly 10 minute affair, the rest of our group was waiting to order drinks. Our waitress had to then finish taking drink orders and so from the time we were seated until we were served our drinks, nearly half an hour had gone by. Our meals at least came in a reasonable amount of time after ordering, however it is always disappointing to be at a seemingly nice establishment that still serves $15 sandwiches in plastic trays lined with wax paper instead of on real plates. We declined dessert and asked for our bill. This took quite a while and we were also bothered to see that a 20% gratuity had automatically been added. Whether this had been noted on the menu, I'm not sure. Often I don't mind this since it can simplify things for larger groups but after the hassle ordering drinks and the wait for the bill, it was not a welcome sight. There was also an item on our bill that we had not ordered and needed removed. It took several minutes to find a server we could ask for help. They took the bill away and then minutes later we saw they had resumed cleaning and setting tables and we had to specifically ask for our check back. Long story short.. just a very odd experience. I've had worse food and service elsewhere but even in light of that there is no reason I'd ever return here. read more

My venison medallions were more like shoe soles they were so tough and overdone. The service is unprofessional and confused. The service was very good from all on staff, the atmosphere was just what we were looking for (old barn type decor, high ceilings, big fireplace, white tablecloth, but not extra formal and stuffy), and the food was good. Irish pub downstairs and a nicer restaurant up. Famous for their award winning apple pie. It is very good! Friendly pub. Live music is often very good. Weds nights they offer authentic Irish music and excellent fish and chips specials. Restaurant looks good and the menu looks excellent, but I'm always drawn to the pub. They offer the full menu in the pub too. Some creative specials too. Not a tourist trap like so many of the Stratton restaurants. An excellent variety of beers on tap. read more
