The Red Fox Inn offers savory, Vermont comfort food in a charming, historic barn that is a few miles from Stratton, yet remains somehow shielded from stratton douchebaggery. It feels like a decidedly local place, with a quaint upstairs barn dining room and a kick your heels up bar that hosts live music Saturdays. The dining has two tiers if price ranges and food. They have tender venison medalions or pecan crusted brook trout if you're looking for something more upscale. Those ring in on the pricier side at roughly $35. However, you can also stop in for some well priced pub fare such as house meat loaf, fish n chips, or a grass fed burger for around $12-14. The food is reliable, the service is attentive, the beer and wine selection is on point and the mammoth fireplace will be there to greet you and spread warmth over your evening. Tip: if you eat upstairs you don't have to pay cover for music on Saturdays. They serve the pub menu both upstairs and downstairs.

The best apple pie I've ever had coupled with ice cream. Pure deliciousness! Thanks to the Logans and their Red Fox Inn!!

As a first time visitor to the Stratton Mountain/Windham County area, this is at the top of my list out of a dozen spots for one of my most spots to grab a drink and food. First off, I was welcomed by friendly staff as soon as I walked in by myself and took a seat at the bar. As it was snowing and I was driving alone, I didn't get a chance to enjoy one of their many drinks, but the people at the bar and restaurant sure seem to enjoy them. But I did get a chance to sample their yummy sweet potato fries and red fox chicken tenders. Both were above par for bar finger foods but I ate all of it not because I was hungry but because it was a comforting meal from being out in the snow. The best though was dessert. I was lucky and smart enough to get their infamous apple pie coupled with ice cream. I could've licked the plate and spoon clean which I probably did. It was that good. Even the President and his staff love this apple pie! I got a chance to meet some of the Logans who own the bar/restaurant/inn and I must say they are good people. Danny, Cindy, and their team went beyond their way to say hello and make me feel at home in a town where I was a visitor. I can see why they have so many locals who continue to go there. Also, they have bands who play music there every weekend and I hear the scene includes dancing, good food and drinks. I hope to be in the area again soon to join in on the fun.

It looked pretty but tasted average. The brussel sprouts were just fried, no flavor, no balsamic, nothing. Bland ! The green beans were drowned in garlic which saved them. Espresso martinis were good. The yellow fin tuna appetizer was decent and the crispy rice it was served on was tasty. Still on the bland side.. more rice than tuna. We ordered a winter salad to go and it was literally such a joke of a salad, especially for the price. A handful of mixed greens, two tiny slivers of squash, a sprinkle of red onion, disgusting dressing, and a quarter sized amount of cranberries. Little 2oz cup of goat cheese (which was the best part). Absolutely laughable. We ordered the tartufo flatbread and again, just bland. Didn't taste any truffle and it just wasn't great. The best thing I had by far was the brownie with icecream. Definitely the best part of the gigantic meal we had.

Small place with good service. Very Scottish with interesting decor. The chicken salad with corn I…read moregot on my garden salad was tasty and definitely interesting. Hubby reported his roast beef sandwich was great although the roast beef looked overcooked to me. What was dubious, however, were the French fries. They had a sort of mealy texture and a very odd taste--I thought they used coconut oil to fry but hubby thinks they coated them with baking soda, then fried. Either way I wasn't a fan.

The inside is charming and has that old wooden bar smell that I like. This would be a great place to grab a drink on a cold winter day. Very Scottish, lol. We were seated immediately for our 6:30 dinner reservation. We each ordered appetizers, which took nearly 45 minutes to arrive, even the cup of soup. Mozzarella sticks were nothing special, the cheddar tomato soup was really tasty. My mother in law loved the cock-a-leekie soup, and my father in law liked his scotch egg. It took another 20-25 minutes for our entrees to arrive. For a restaurant that closes at 8 pm, it was surprising at how long the food took to come out. They must have a very small kitchen. Everyone in our group liked their meal. My "loaded vegetarian baked potato" was just a full cup of sour cream and cheese on top of a potato with lukewarm broccoli on the side. A bit disappointing, with there were at least chives or seasoning. Basically nothing else vegetarian on the menu so this was what I was stuck with. Desserts were good, especially the sticky toffee pudding. I would call this place a step above average in the area, but service leaves a lot to be desired.

0/5 SERVICE. Genuinely came with high hopes, the menu looked so good that I was planning on dining…read morehere lunch and dinner as I was visiting nearby farms/shops which recommended this... but lunch was horrible. Mainly attributable to SERVICE which was HORRIFYING!! Ambiance was charming home setting outdoors and rustic wood vibe indoors. The food was average/iffy. Garlic peppercorn steak was encrusted with a layer of seasoning and yet it wasn't that seasoned in terms of flavor, was just ok. Ordered medium and yet it looked black on the outside and medium rare inside and beyond tough - I could not even cut the steak, I ended up just ended eating the whole thing straight up. So strange and not worth $30 at all. The Idaho skins were good just wish the potatoes were crispier. The signature applewood smoked wings were so overpriced and terrible. I could not taste any flavor, it tasted like boiled wings expensive 6 for $18. The worst part: service, or rather lack thereof.!! Upon entering, we waited awhile for someone to come greet and seat us and seemed to judge us when we clarifying what tavern was when we were asked if we wanted tavern or dining room. We were seated and took a LONG time until finally our server came to take our order. Then took an even longer time to get our food almost 20minutes. The other table that got seated after us the order the same wings at the same time, got their food 10 minutes earlier than us and their server was present throughout the meal . Ours just was nowhere to be seen throughout the entire time. Finally the food came, we ate quick, and asked for the check. We couldn't even find our server to get the check! The other table has already gotten the check and signing the bill. We then got up and tried to flag down our waiter to for the check and takeout box and after a long time she gave them but disappeared again for a long time so we tried to flag her down, again, so we could actually pay. When we did, she rudely said "do you see the things im carrying? can you wait?" Mind you, we have been waiting for nearly another 20 minutes after we finished eating for any appearance from the waiter. We tried asking the other waiter who was actually present if we could but said we needed to get our actual server. We finally finished the whole transaction (20min waiting for food, 20min spent flagging down the waiter for the check/giving the money), and frustrated we wasted so much time here while on a trip for just OK food, we just left because the server then disappeared AGAIN after settling our bill. Hilariously enough, the only time she seemed to care about us was when we left and she went RUNNING after us to ask us "you did not tip enough, did I do something wrong?" in a rude and fake overly concerned way. After we briefly explained, she proceeds to loudly shame us saying "you supposed to tip me xyz because I provide you a service and if not you're really disrespectful". The audacity. Service was beyond horrible!!! and still demanding higher tips calling customers disrespectful when we did nothing but wait and get yelled at by her for not waiting even longer and still needing to directly pay her extra tips. During that scolding we got, we saw her name tag: Avery. Overall: Foods ok. LONG WAIT for food and check. Horrifying service by one server: Avery. Perhaps other servers were better like the one who took care of the table who sat down at the same time and left 20 minutes earlier meanwhile our service was way slower, not as friendly, demanding tips, and public scolds/shames customers for it. This experience totally soured my impression of this place and now I'm questioning why people even recommended this place to me and why I went along with it!

After being seated, we waited about 10 minutes before our server arrived--she was actually very pleasant--but unfortunately things didn't improve from there. After placing our drink order, we waited 25 minutes and never received it. During that time, multiple staff members walked by, glanced at our table, and kept going without checking in. We ultimately decided to leave. To make matters worse, the server attending the table next to us had about as much warmth as a block of ice, which didn't help the overall atmosphere. Really unpleasant

Came here for the first time for a special event and we were impressed with the place, which…read morerecently underwent an extensive addition that increased the floor space, providing for a large tasting area and plenty of seating. River Roost is just a brewing facility with a tasting room, so there is no food provided or for sale. However, the place is across the parking lot from Big Fatty's Barbecue for some amazing, out of this world barbecue, Mac & Cheese, and the like. And you can bring it here to munch out while savoring the many beers on draft. And since it's not a restaurants, Fido is welcome. The owner was the attendant on that day and he was quite affable and also knew his beers like the back of his hand. I tried a "Mas Verde" IPA and it was absolutely delicious. Overall a superb time with wonderful people and great beer and superb food from across the street.... The only warning about the area is the parking situation. As the area (which used to be a blighted warehouse and industrial area) has become gentrified and dotted with apartments, the nearby Northern Stage Theatre, and numerous restaurants, parking has become an issue and customers should either arrive early or realize they may have to park several blocks away. But that only shows just how popular this area has become and part of it is River Roost's doing. Great place!!!!!
