I still have the chills just thinking about it. We did not see whales like some were fortunate to see them, but we didn't feel like we missed anything. I could do without all the talking before the actual show started but I was impressed with all the enthusiasm. There was a lot of audience participation, including getting the kids up and moving. My partner, his family, our friends, and I ended our excursion with the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. Their location is built at the former site of the Ward Cove Pulp Mill. The mill was the largest pulp mill in the USA prior to closing in 1997. It was an action-packed event where the audience had to choose sides. The athletes are real lumberjacks and possess the strength and skills required by that trade. They demonstrate a half-dozen skills that for most people would be difficult and dangerous. Unlike an actual ESPN lumberjack competition, there's no trophy for the winners; instead national pride is the prize! This is a fun and enjoyable show for all ages.

It was still early in the day, so there weren't too many patrons in the shop. The store was quite large for a small town, so we spent a good amount of time walking through the place and browsing the shelves. While I read mostly non-fiction, I was pleased to find a section of fiction books written by local authors. I purchased one that was autographed and plan to enjoy it when I get back home. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the store was well organized and clean, with the all the shelves clearly labeled. This was the best bookstore we visited during our Alaskan trip.

e careful what you rent... We rented the Subaru Impreza. Had we known it was 6+ years old, full of…read morestains not water spots water spots, and a smell brought out by humidity. So I reached out to them about these things. When contacted, they said there's no evidence of smoking in the car. Yeah maybe 90% of the renters adhere to the policy when it rained you could pick up that smell. You would think for $125+ a day plus taxes plus paying to get it from the airport into Ketchikan and back. Make it look like the car has been detailed once in its life or at least break out the carpet shampooer. Not asking for perfection I understand different standards, and different resources in Alaska, but Ketchikan has resources for a car detail. This was ridiculous considering they had comparable cars, much newer without the issues. When I contacted them, their response was well. It only has 31,000 miles and it rains 300 days a year, that's when they told me they were water spots not oil spots. Anyone who is spilled the two on a piece of fabric knows the difference. So rent locally.

Admission is very reasonable at $7 for adults, with free admission for children and military members, and just $6 for seniors 65+. While I do wish the museum was a bit larger, there was still a nice collection of totem poles to see and learn about. They even have several totem poles displayed outside, so if you don't have time to go inside, it's still worth stopping by for a photo. We were amazed by the history behind them and just how old some of these incredible pieces are. The staff was friendly and welcoming, the bathrooms were clean, and the exhibits were well maintained. Overall, it's a great short stop to get out of the rain, learn something new, and experience an important part of the local culture. As an added bonus, the free shuttle will bring you here and back to downtown, making it a very convenient attraction to visit. Highly recommended if you're exploring the area!

The distillery tour, which is the focus of this updated review, was 2.5 hours long and was an absolute pleasure to attend. Travis, one of the two co-owners, did a great job of mixing in the historical aspects of his distillery, with the science of how the distilling process works while mixing in his own down home humor to make for an excellent excursion. As part of this tour you get to taste all the products Uncharted make, which includes numerous Gin, Vodka, Agave and whiskey products while Travis is giving his presentation. Upon completion of his presentation we went upstairs to the "lab" to make our own personalized bottle of liquor where I ended up making an orange colander Agave. Such fun! If you have any interest in the distilling process and have ever wondered how liquor is made you should definitely give this excursion some strong consideration as you will not be disappointed. Just 90 miles north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Ketchikan is the southernmost and fourth…read morelargest city in Alaska. It hugs the bluffs that form the shoreline along the southwest corner of Revillagigedo Island, where we called our day 4 port of call. This is an island community where Alaska Native Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures; fishing traditions, history, and outdoor experiences shape everyday life. Just south lies Saxman Totem Village. My partner, his family, our friends, and I visited this location as part of a tour scheduled via the cruise ship. It's home to an extensive collection of 24 replica totems moved from abandoned villages as well as a replica Clan House and a Carving Center. The poles are not religious in nature but rather represent characters in a story or events in history. This isn't the only place in the area to see totem poles, but it is the only place where one also gets to see the carvers at work on their craft. The Clan House features a magnificent carving of a Beaver on the outside, and inside are four carved house posts as well as another large panel carving inside the building. There wasn't much walking involved, and we got to experience a wonderful cultural dance performance inside the Beaver Clan House. Our guide, Liam was really the star of the show. His storytelling and passion for the grounds were impressive. The park itself seems like a place worth seeing if one's interested in local history and culture.
