Worst haircut of my life - no joke. I have never in my entire life cried about my hair (not even when I was 6 and got my first perm) until my cut from this place. My bangs are so short that they won't even lay flat on my forehead and apparently me asking for no layering translates to "cut as many short layers as possible". I just styled it again this afternoon and seriously cried. It looks HORRID. Of course the stylist completely criticized the last person who cut my hair and said it would take her a long time to "clean up this mess". Right. Great waxes. Everyone is professional, clean, fast, friendly-enough. Affordable. I've been going for over a decade and I'm never disappointed. They don't use hard wax, which I appreciate. So much less expensive and faster than competitors. They've seen it all and are not judgey. When I go in for a wax, I'm not looking for a relaxing spa experience - I want a quick and easy and as painless as possible. Never, I repeat NEVER go here for a manicure or pedicure. You're taken to a dark, abandoned basement where the supplies and staff are questionable at best. The prices they charge for the (lack of) service is outlandish. It felt like a 12 yr old was hacking away at my fingers and toes. I left with majorly smudged nails and the technician said "that happens." I went home and removed the polish immediately. And my fingers are in pain from the hack job that was done. Biggest waste of money and worst experience I've ever had getting nails done. And the cherry on top? This awful, painful mani/pedi took TWO HOURS. Absurd. Long story short, go elsewhere- they don't know what they're doing, the atmosphere is creepy, the staff inexperienced and immature, and the quality non-existent. read more

I've stopped going to The Refinery for off several years that I did go off an on due to their inconsistent services ranging from ok to terrible. The good: Autumn, the owner, does a good wax and I've never had problems, and she gets you in and out of there quickly. The bad: the one time I strayed and used a different waxer, and I got warts, not the STD kind, but molluska, and that's because maybe the waxer didn't put a towel down on the table. I thought she must spray it down between clients, but I guess not. Ugh, grody. After paying $400.00 to get rid of them with a dermatologist (and that was with medical insurance), I sent a letter to the owner and mums the word. (Yeah, I did get them from this service, there's no other possible way.) I had the worst manicure of my life here too. The manicurist didn't soak my hand for long, nor use cuticle softener and then started hacking away at my cuticles, making one bleed, so it couldn't even be painted. I was still charged for the service. (Of course, it was my cuticles' fault, not hers.) I have had ok services, nothing fantastic, as well as the horrible experiences above. The prices are very reasonable and if you are to go, always make sure to know who you are going to. It seems that a lot of stylists, waxers, estheticians, go in and out of there. I just moved from Minneapolis, but stopped going here years ago, but wanted to warn people that you really need to be careful about who you see here. read more

An update: I being seeing Amy for eyebrow waxes for about six months now...and she is consistently awesome. She gets me in and out in ten minutes and does a great job EVERY time. I'm so glad I found her! I give Amy four stars but maintain that quality of service at the Refinery is hit-or-miss based on provider. read more

Bt has been doing my waxing for over a year and I am extremely satisfied with the results. My eyebrows are amazing. The Brazilian waxes are done perfectly. She is a master at what she does. I am so glad I found her after trying so many different ladies at this location (many are wonderful just not like Bt). If I could I would give her 10 stars. I went into the refinery last week to get my first ever Brazilian wax and it is exactly as the other reviews state. Fast, cheap, and well done. She did wax me faster than I ever thought possible, and even when I asked for a break, she said I could get through it. But...I could, and I did. In the end I was pleased that it took 10 minutes and I was on with my day and able to get other things done. The fact that you can hear other people get their waxing done, who cares. It's not like you are telling the gal all your secrets that you don't want anyone to hear. The cheap thin walls are part of the reason, I'm sure, why they are soo reasonable in price. I will be back! But the other reviews are accurate in the statement that if you want a spa experience, do not go here. Definitely not a relaxing environment :) read more

I am definitely not coming back. Yes, this place has great prices, but as expected, the quality of service is not great. I got a full leg and brazillian wax. Basically my legs feel like I shaved, and now the hairs are growing back. It seems as though the hairs were ripped off, but not from the follicle. When I called to complain she said "sometimes when it's your first time with legs little hairs grow back because they're not on the same cycle". Well, it feels as those these are ALL my hairs, not some little tiny hidden ones, and they just happened to grow back a few days after I got it done ?? Another thing that was really gross was that my lady double dipped in the wax. Either way, I've gotten Brazilians done at more expensive places and had MUCH better results. I would say unless you're broke and desperate, choose a better quality place to go. Otherwise, it's cheaper to just shave than pay $90 for the same work. read more

They have all types of services including haircuts, facials, waxing etc. The place is clean and when I called for an appointment after 7 (they close at 7pm), the phone was picked up so that was a surprise. The only thing is that their walls are thin downstairs (I've never been upstairs), so thin that when you sit at the waiting area, you can hear the waxing sound *ouch* and screaming of the girls *It hurts!* The service is nice and the location is good, a 3-10 minute walk to U of M campus. read more

So I figured I could yelp a place in Minneapolis before heading out to the lake. Let me tell you, I found a gem with the Refinery. Amy did my waxing and she's packing the expertise. Whenever I need a Brazilian wax I go to BT at the refinery. After going to other salons and trying out other estheticians at the refinery I finally found BT who is amazing! I am a very hairy person and my hair is very coarse which most people don't know how to deal with. BT takes her time to wax all of the hair without causing pain and minimizing ingrowns which I'm prone to. I can't go to anyone else for waxing because BT is simply the best! read more

I will say that they got three stars from me only because I met the most awesome esthetician there a few years ago. She no longer works there (google Brogan Skinworks). She is the best! And while my regular esthetician was setting up her new shop and not taking appointments for awhile, she did refer me to Daniella at The Refinery. She was pretty good. However, I misguidedly tried to get another wax at The Refinery before getting her advice about Daniella.I will tell you this, NEVER get a wax from the owner!! She is absolutely horrible! It was sloppy, messy, painful, and ineffective (as in, she missed a lot). The new space for waxing doesn't have a lot of frills but it pretty much matches the cost and the feel of the waxing business there. Reliably satisfactory service at an unbeatable price keeps me coming back. All the waxers I've had have been knowledgeable and efficient (and cheerful!). I love the hot stone massages they offer in the winter. Really relaxing and a great alternative to a Swedish massage. I've been seeing Daniella for 3+ years for waxes. She is incredibly thorough and is by far the best esthetician I've ever seen. Not only is she great at what she does, she is a great person! Makes you feel totally at ease & extremely comfortable. First time and did not have a good experience. Left with a lot of tint dye on skin. First lash tint experience and my eyes looked like I had been crying with eyeliner and mascara on. Brows were very sloppy. My first brow tint experience was with Hannah at Haus Salon and I left looking clean and fresh. Corina did my lash and brow tint and I don't recommend her. I can't speak for the rest of the establishment, but I won't be back. Corina was quite defensive as well, while I was polite when I gave her my feedback and a tip too. It would have been better if she offered to clean up the tint on my skin (or rather just be more careful when applying from the start). I immediately went home and got as much off as I could using makeup remover and some facial scrub. I have plans tonight, looks like I'll be wearing layers of concealer lol. What compelled me the most to write a review was corina's attitude. She was very defensive and too aggressive when I politely gave her my feedback which was simply "there is more tint dye on my skin than I anticipated." Her response was basically "this is normal, duh are you stupid?" But it's not normal, and if you go to the right person, you don't leave with your face covered in tint. read more

I've had waxes, massages, and facials at this spa, and can honestly recommend them all. The vibe is very young urban, but they also have a lot of zen elements, complimentary water and tea, etc. The professionals working there all strike me as on the young side and just starting out, but everyone has always been great at their job and friendly. I also recommend getting on their e-mail list- you can get good deals through their 'early week specials'. My only complaint is sometimes the massage therapists rub lotion all into my hair, which makes me a little crazy when I'm trying to make my hair look decent enough to walk out of there! read more
