My family & I adopted Angel (Clove) back in July '20. I initially found The Rescued Dog through their instagram page (through a hashtag) & always kept always watched out to see when the perfect fit for our family would come up. The adoption process was incredibly simple. Since this was during covid, appointments were staggered & we got to do a meet & greet with the puppies available. I sat in a playpen with four playful puppies & watched as one found my lap, rested their face on my lap to watch their siblings continue to play. It was at that moment I knew it would be the puppy for us! I even remember one of the ladies running the meet up coming over & saying "I think your dog just chose their person." And she couldn't have been more right . Angel is smart, sassy, funny, loving, gentle, & has become the best surrogate mother/ older sister to my son. She was the first other being to feel my son kick in my belly (& nudged him back ), stuck by my side through the roughest pregnancy, & is the best dog I could have ever imagined! In March, my fifteen-year-old and I were browsing homeless pup pups online when we came across the TRD site. The most adorable little guy was looking back at us, "Please come take me home with you." He was a half long-hair chihuahua half dachshund. TRD fosters dogs in homes until they are rescued. This particular dog was being fostered with a little teeny tiny eentsy weentsy white and tan chihuahua. We applied for the first dog and were told 8 other people had also applied for him. Jeez! Of course 8 people had applied--he was sooo adorable. TRD came to do our home inspection, which checked out a-okay. The next step was to go to the adoption event on the next Saturday (second Saturday of every month). We had to bring our current dogs (2) with us to see how they would interact with the new dog. The other applicants would be there, too, along with their current pups if they had them. When I arrived at the event, only one other applicant had shown up. She seemed very nice, and her dog was beautiful. But, her dog was intensely shy. He would not say "hi" to other dogs, or even to people. He just wanted to snuggle his owner (easy to understand that). My two pups, on the other hand, immediately started playing with the dog we wanted as well as his foster sister. And, to top it off, they have the exact same coloring. Ours are a white and tan and a black and white, and they were a white and tan and a black and white. It was Doggy Brady Bunch adorableness. Everyone was commenting on the cuteness. As soon as little miss chihuahua sauntered up, I knew I wanted her. She was simply adorable, calm, and cuddly--just like my chihuahua. And we all know chihuahuas can be hyper, barky, and just overall not cool. I had purposely always gotten dogs at 8 weeks from reputable breeders so I could both choose carefully from a litter as well as strongly influence the personality to create loving, calm dogs--and had been successful at this so far. I was nervous about getting a 5-year-old and a 9-month-old dog that had been stray and kenneled for all or part of their lives. The TRD people took me on a ten-minute walk with my two dogs and the two adoptable dogs. We chatted about relevant topics. One of the ladies told me she had had four dogs and how wonderful it was. Having four kids, I could relate a bit, hehe. Still, I was a bit doubtful about having four. Wowza, that's a lot of leashes and poop. But, altogether, they weigh 32 pounds (15, 10, 4, 3). So, it would still be only like half of a real dog. Toward the end of the walk they asked me if I'd be willing to adopt the second dog. Now there was zero hesitation--yes. My sons had polo games that morning and my girls were otherwise occupied (15, 17, 19, 21), so I was there solo. He had said, "Mom, if there's any way you will get that other dog, please get her." He would be so happy to hear that she was going to be voted onto our island. The dogs came to $250 each, so $500 total. Since my others are purebreds that cost $2,000 and $2,500 respectively, this seemed like a bargain. It was also great to help the The Rescued Dog organization continue its great work with this fee. The dogs are every bit as beautiful as my purebreds, loving, and so grateful. We did our traditional family vote for naming new babies and animals, and landed on Easton (which means "noble power") for the black and white and Emmy (as in the Emmy Award) for the white and tan. It took about five weeks for our other dogs to realize the new dogs were not just visiting. It was hilarious watching our 10-year-old chihuahua literally turn his head away when they would try to talk to him. "Dogs? What dogs? I don't see any new dogs here." Once our dogs took the newbies off the guest list and put them onto the family roster, a ridiculously glorious bonding period ensued. Games, ball-chasing, chasing of each other, licking, snuggling, sharing food, stealing food, group meditation, group twilight barking, massive puppy piles, group property protection barking, morning doggy kisses, you name it. They bonded as a four pack. Thank you, TRD for bringing these two dogs that were left on the streets of San Bernardino into our lives. Thank you for your thorough process that ensures dogs will be well placed and cared for in their new forever homes. I didn't end up adopting from them (no reason besides I found a pup I wanted at another rescue) but just wanted to write a review and say that both Sarah and Dani were fantastic to work with and were trying to truly find the best dog for me. If they were this great during COVID I can only imagine that they go above and beyond even more during normal circumstances. We adopted our first puppy on Monday from The Rescued Dog. His name was Yeti but we renamed him Obi. He's super sweet. The people at the rescue were awesome to deal with. They were responsive, open, patient with my numerous questions and best of all, I could tell they really love Obi and wanted to make sure he was going to a good home. I could tell the foster mama was going to miss him but was glad to see him going to a loving family. Obi is doing really well. We already took him to our vet and they know us there thanks to our plethora of kitties over the years. They were so happy for us to have found such a good puppy. I just completed my first successful fostering with The Rescued Dog. I believe they began in February this year. I like that they are good communicators and were willing to work with me and what I was willing to accept in my home as a foster. I got to hang with the most cute, sweet little dog for three weeks, and today he was adopted by a nice couple. Like most rescues, they provide everything you need to foster--food, bedding, a crate, leash, and medical care. Another thing I liked about them is that they facilitate the adoption process. If someone wants to meet a dog, The Rescued Dog organizes and carries out the "play date". (Another rescue I fostered with expected the fosters to do everything--including the adoption paperwork and payments!) They are very careful to screen adopters thoroughly, and do a home check before letting a dog go to their new home. It seems like they also work hard to get the dogs adopted quickly. Every time I look at our newest addition (Cooper), I want to cry happy tears of joy because he is the most wonderful dog I could have ever imagined. TRD was fantastic to work with. We had initially applied for another dog but she had already been placed with a family. They responded and let us know to keep an eye on their Facebook and their website, in order to find other dogs who would be available shortly. Sure enough - we found Cooper (fka Chip) on their Facebook page after a few weeks. I emailed Hannah right away and told her that we were interested. She set up a home check and once everything was given the "okay" there, we scheduled a play date. Our golden retriever / chow chow mix is kind of a pain in the butt - she is very loud and is a total alpha. We needed to find a dog that could hold his / her own ground and not let her walk all over them and Cooper is the perfect dog for her. We adopted Cooper three days after our playdate. Hannah was awesome in coordinating everything and providing all of his paperwork and details about his history. This is not meant to be a negative reflection on the dogs or the rescue. I applaud and respect this rescue for being 100% volunteers, but want to show my experience and frustration. My husband and I recently got married, he has been stationed in San Diego for almost a year (he's in the military) and I stayed in Jersey to finish another year of college and to plan our wedding. In Jersey I was extremely busy with working as a manager at a popular breakfast place, a waitress at a pub, a full time student and I had my cosmetology license. Moving to California has been extremely difficult; leaving my friends, family, my childhood dogs (2 miniature schnauzers who are both 8), my jobs, my college campus and my cosmology license (different states have different requirements). My husband and I both love dogs and talked about getting once since we were engaged! We did research and only saw positive reviews about "the rescue dog" so we decided to look and we found the perfect dog. Buccaneer; a 4 month old beagle with a missing eye, and in his information section states he's friendly with dogs, cats and children, loved to cuddle and play and old bays when the foster cat ignores him. We both felt an instant connection and decided to fill out the adoption application. In the application we state that we live in an apartment but since I do not work buccaneer would never be alone. Another question was if they would be able to do a home check, we said of course! They asked for a reference and our person email and phone number, we obliged! They even asked that if buccaneer was adopted before us if we would look at their other dogs, we said of course. after the application was finished it said wait up to 24 hours for a call or email or call them. 24 hours pass and no call or email so my husband and I call them. No response so we leave a voicemail. A few hours later we try again. Nothing. The next day while my husband is at work I try twice more. Nothing. My sister (who was my reference) said she also never got a call, strange. During this whole time they were posting on their Facebook and Instagram about dogs who got adopted and other updates. My husband and I decide to message them on Facebook and Instagram because we are worried that maybe our application didn't go through or something was wrong with it (since they were adopting dogs out and posting about them and it's been over 48 hours). We finally got an email back asking what we would do if my husband is deployed with buccaneer. Reasonable question! We state that I will be here when my husband is gone and we plan of making buccaneer a part of our family forever so when we move he will come with us. Send email. The next night we get another email asking if we ever had a beagle before, we responded that no we never personally had a beagle before but I used to frequently dog sit for my neighbors beagle and I had 2 miniature schnauzers growing up (1 being a rescue) and my husband had 2 chocolate labs. Email sent. Now my husband and I are feeling confident because if there was any problem with anything on our application they wouldn't be corresponding with us, right? Last night we got an email stating our application for buccaneer was denied because we don't have "breed knowledge" and we live in an apartment. I totally understand the rescue is doing their best for the dog and I respect that but we already stated that we never had a beagle and we lived in an apartment on our application we submitted Thursday and now Monday night after emailing back and forth for the last few days it's now a problem. I felt like we were getting dragged along, they should have stated right away that it wasn't going to happen since we live in an apartment. Not give us a false sense of hope. What I thought was also weird was they never called my reference still, even though we would still want to adopt a dog from them!! My family and I fostered a dog from The Rescued Dog, and all the ladies were very polite, respectful, and genuinely care for the dogs they save. I was very cautious with what kind of a dog to foster, as I have small children. The Rescue Dog will listen to all your needs and wishes and find a dog that will suit your family. The dog we fostered was almost a perfect dog and we fell in love with him. Fortunately for him, and unfortunately for us, he was adopted only after 2 weeks and we had to let him go. (Hardest part of fostering!) I think that's pretty fast, and it's probably because The Rescue Dog works hard on getting the dogs get adopted. Few days after we got the dog, I was asked to fill out a questionnaire to answer in details on his personality. It is then related to his adoption page, which helps potential adopters to have an idea if he matches them. I think that makes a big difference, rather than seeing a generic information. I was able to meet his future owner during the adoption (like the other reviewer said. The Rescued Dog will initiate the meeting, but I asked if I could join the process) and got to witness the process. The coordinator would make sure that the dog matches their expectation and their lifestyle, for the sake of both the adopter and the dog. In our case, our pup was exactly what they were looking for in a dog. I am excited to foster another dog from them soon. My husband and I are dual military and we fell in love with the dog Sunny. We filled out the application. They first responded with Sunny is a pit and my housing community had breed restrictions, that's understandable they then said good luck on your search -__- didn't even offer to help us find another dog after filling out that long application. So i responded asking if we can look at other dogs they said they were concerned that i mentioned I'd give the dog away...and one question asked under what circumstance would I give the dog away so I answered if I wasn't able to take the dog to my next duty station or if the dog was aggressive to my husband or children. I felt like they were looking for an answer and i gave them an honest one, if I go to a country that doesn't accept that breed or if they send me on unaccompanied orders, I have to give the dog to family. I work for San Carlos Animal Hospital and we care for a lot of The Rescued Dogs that come out of the shelters. This organization does not take any shortcuts on the care they provide these dogs. The fosters are fantastic, sweet and provide excellent care for these poor, sometimes neglected dogs. Not knowing what the background of each dog is, they do end up with dogs that have serious medical issues. They put all of their efforts into fundraising and make sure that every dog gets every chance available, no matter the cost. I could not say better things about The Rescued Dog. After my 14-year-old border collie mix passed away last June, I told myself that I would wait until after the holidays to get another dog. Well, that plan lasted less than two months. I kept seeing the photos and bio for a dog that had been rescued by TRD from the Humane Society of Imperial County. "Vala" was about 1.5 years old, a beautiful all-black belgian shephard mix, with a heart murmur. I decided to complete the online application and was able to meet her just a few days later. Both a volunteer coordinator and Vala's (now called Gretchen) foster dad brought her to my house for a meet and greet. I fell in love. Also, I enjoyed working with TRD on the adoption. The entire process was seamless and the rescue was completely up front and transparent with me about Gretchen's health challenges and what would be required for her on-going care. I still stay in touch with Gretchen's foster dad and he joins us on afternoon walks from time to time. She absolutely LOVES him, which is a testament to the quality of fosters who volunteer with TRD, and the organization's overall commitment to rescuing great dogs from pretty dreadful circumstances and finding them forever homes. TRD is the BEST!!!!! We went through a couple different rescue organizations to find our perfect pup, but TRD goes above and beyond to respond promptly to your emails and to make the adoption process as user friendly as possible. Every SINGLE person I encountered with TRD was professional, friendly, easy to talk to, understanding, and just over all a great person. We were looking for THE perfect dog- a dog who could live in an apartment, be ok while I was at work, not make the neighbors hate us with their barking, be dog friendly, etc etc. Pretty much a dog that everyone wants. We had a high list of priorities and I wasn't sure this dog even existed in the world. But she does and TRD brought us together! They have the DOG'S best interest at heart, there is no waiting list, the dog simply goes to whatever home is the best match. It's that simple. The dog goes where the dog will do best. AND! On top of that, the dogs from TRD are fostered, so you know exactly what their home life behavior will be like!!! We had an unfortunate experience where a dog's shelter behavior and home behavior were wildly different, so we knew we had to be extra careful and slow with this process. TRD was so understanding and wanted us to find the perfect dog as much as we did. I will forever be grateful to every single team member at TRD who took care of our pup before she found us. I hounded our adoption coordinator with countless emails and annoying messages. Thank you, Dani for putting up with me!! I love this rescue! I am a foster and volunteer for The Rescued Dog. They are so easy to work with. When I foster I'm given all the supplies I will need for my foster dog, crate, food, bed, toys, leash, collar, etc. Every dog they have chosen for me to foster has been just wonderful. I also enjoy volunteering for them at adoption events. It's great to see the adopters look at all the dogs to find their new best friend. I love that each adoption requires an adoption application, a home check, and a playdate with any dogs in the household. We just adopted our 4 month old princess, Ariel, from The Rescued Dog. Everyone was super easy to work with and made the searching/adoption process quick and smooth. Brittney e-mailed back and forth with me asking what I was looking for in a dog and gave me some great recommendations. When I decided on Ariel, she put me in touch with Ariel's foster mom, Dani, who emailed me additional information about her and was able to set up a play date near my home. After the initial meet and greet, she then brought Ariel over to my apartment with her favorite toy and lots of other goodies the very next day and we finalized the adoption! Ariel is definitely the best thing to happen to me and I will forever for thankful for The Rescued Dog and Dani for saving Ariel's life. She was an abandoned and very sick puppy covered in ticks when she was found, and now she's the sweetest little princess and the love of my life :) I definitely recommend The Rescued Dog for adopting a pup! read more

We feel so lucky to have found The Rescued Dog and worked with them to adopt our new puppy Zelda. I found Zelda on their web page and filled out their application. They reached out to me by email and phone within 24 hours and started to set up a visit to our home. They worked with me to find a good time and communicated with me quickly when any change was needed. They were also very good about working with me to make meeting Zelda just a meeting and not an adoption so my young kids didn't fall apart if it didn't work out. During the visit, Gabriella and Teresa showed genuine interest in our home and our family and how Zelda would fit with both. Zelda was the sweetest little puppy! She just seemed to have (and continues to have) a personality of respect and manners. Not qualities you always give to dogs, and certainly never puppies I've met. The whole experience was wonderful and we couldn't be happier with our new family member. I'll be doing my best to interact with The Rescued Dog again in the future. They focus on saving their rescues from high kill shelters and have a tremendous network of fosters that keep the rescues safe until they are able to locate the perfect family and match for every single animal that they save. I have been fortunate enough to work with many of the volunteers, fosters, and directors of the TRD, and I couldn't be more impressed. They have been an absolute blessing to find and have been able to match our family with two amazing dogs over the last few years. One aspect that separates this team from other rescues in the area, they care about the dog and the perfect placement.
