A group of about 10-15 people meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month in Leawood for an hour lunch meeting. Typically, there are a couple 5-7 minute speeches that will be given and evalutated and then an opportunity for short "Table Topics" so everyone can practice thinking and speaking on their feet. My boss recommended that I join a Toastmasters group after she noted that I used "like" in conversations more than a Valley girl. That's embarrassing. At each meeting, there is a Grammarian/Ah-So Counter who reports how many times each person used a filler word, incorrect grammar, etc. Then the "winner" gets to take home the Wizard of Ahs trophy to remind them to speak more thoughtfully. After proudly earning this title for many meetings, I can say that I have definitely improved my speaking skills. I've been to other Toastmaster clubs and felt intimidated; this is a very diverse and welcoming group. Feedback is positive and constructive. You will always laugh. At BRKTHROUGH, you compete in challenge rooms (there are 40 of them, although a couple were unavailable during our visit) - they last a minute or longer, and are categorized as Physical (requiring speed, agility, coordination, etc), Mental (brainpower, trivia, memory, and puzzle-solving), or Skill (precision, dexterity, patience). The descriptors above came from the BRKTHROUGH website, but I can confirm that they are descriptive of the challenges. The room type/difficulty is shown on a triangle, so they are often a combination of two items (for example, mostly physical with some skill-based components). Every room is scored based on your completion (or lack, thereof) out of 100 points. You can redo rooms as often as you like, keeping the highest score. Your team has an RFID wristband to enter the rooms. Your goal is to earn as many points as you can during the time period you paid for (we did 2 hours). Not only do you try to get your best score, there is a leaderboard to show how you are doing against the other teams in the building. You can earn a prize if you obtain a certain minimum score, or win against the other groups. Other than the boys arguing over strategies, we had a good time. Even with young kids, we were able to complete a lot of the rooms. There are plenty of rooms that could be completed by those with physical limitations, but obviously not all of them. We had a good time and the time flew by. There is also a bar and restaurant and a few games to play after your time is up.
