Nick Lambert and the River Grille hosted the Newburgh Free Academy Wrestling team for our annual dinner. They graciously shut down the entire restaurant to accomodate us. They painted a beautiful mural on the wall in honor of us. Nick and his staff were outstanding. The food was equally outstanding, our parents and athletes enjoyed chicken marsala, penne Ala vodka, popcorn shrimp, salad, potatoes, assorted vegetables buffet style. The food was cooked to perfection and all the guests enjoyed several trips back to the buffet. During the awards the guests were treated to cake and ice cream. My children want to have their birthday dinners there they enjoyed it so much. The atmosphere is awesome, a beautiful view off of the outside dining area of the Hudson River and Mt. Quick to seat, Slow to serve. That is the best way to describe this establishment. Party of 9 includes 4 children. 2 meals were not prepared as ordered. Due to the 1 hour wait for the food we didn't bother to ask for this to be corrected. Steak was over cooked. You could tell the calamari wasn't fresh, but was frozen. Burrata was good. Fancy menu with lackluster food and high prices. Simply wont go back. There are better options at the waterfront. Needs improvement. read more

A group of 5 went here for a dinner on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was barely halfway filled and yet the service was unbelievably slow. It took 30 mins for 3 bottled beers, one cocktail and a glass of wine to arrive to the table. The wine was warm and there were no beer glasses. The food was average, but way overpriced for the quality. I would not go back based on the meek service and mediocre food. They served frozen butter with the bread too (yeck!) The most frustrating part of the horrible experience was the confusing staff. A few servers were setting up tables and paying zero attention to the fact that people had been seated and had yet to be attended to. read more

Went for dinner, hostess told us we could go to bar. bartender was not complying to covid social distancing guidelines and not wearing a mask while making beverages and serving people. He even allowed two patrons to remove their mask to drink in front of him. When it was our turn, he questioned the age of my friend who is 23 and gave him his NY drivers license. He didnt believe him and started quizzing him on pe teachers from his high school. He would not believe him and there was nothing about his drivers license that looked fake. This restaurant does not deserve one star. If I could give it 0 stars, I would. I only gave it one star because they allowed my party of 10 to reserve a table right before we showed up. The menu appears fancy, but of the five different dishes we all ordered, none of them were worth the 45-minute wait or the expensive price tag. Save your money and go somewhere else in Newburgh or Cold Spring that will give you good, hot food, for a reasonable price and won't keep you waiting forever. read more

Love dining at The River Grill. When weather permits, sitting on the covered patio is wonderful. Start with a cocktail, relax and enjoy the magnificent view of the Hudson River. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The restaurant offers a nice selection of delicious dishes. Their steamers are the best. A great place to casually entertain and impress friends and family from out of town. After dinner, take a leisurely stroll along the river front promenade. You'll think you're on vacation. read more

First time patron will return. Extremely tentative staff. Sat outside. I order lobster rav which was out of this world! The Large shrimp and the cream sauce took it to the next level. My partner ordered seafood paella and also was very pleased. ( Where have you gone before and gotten too much seafood?) that was the paella. Chock full of all types of seafood. I had Cabernet and it was on par. My date ordered a Long Island which he didn't enjoy- tasted of cheap liquor. Other than that it was great. Maybe bigger tables would be the only recommendation. I went here with my girlfriend, and honestly I think that they could have done a lot better. My drink selection was very basic, but my girlfriend ordered a glass of riesling. The only problem there is that it does not state who makes it; what sort of overtones it has, or anything for that matter. Our server was very standoffish (who will rename nameless) laundry listed their specials and years that's sad because honestly with a little coaching he would be phenomenal. We ordered the calamari, and it looked like it was bought at restaurant depot. Like come on man, get fresh squid, clean it, throw some flour on it... a little salt and pepper, throw it in the fryer, serve it with a lemon, and enjoy. I ordered the steak Florentine .... and not only was it bland (it's not against the law to marinate a steak) it also tasted frozen. My potatoe croquet had restaurant depot mashed potatoes inside of and my girlfriends food was a lot of the same. But you know what got me going the most... everyone that worked there looked miserable!!! Like do you understand (and this one goes out to the owner/ chef Mark) that when you serve sub- par food at high prices and you put 2 bussersand 2 hosts on a slow saturday, your staff will suffer.... they're not making any money. I honestly at this point can't blame the host for being high- I would have definitely lit it up if i had to work there too. I do think the shrimp that came with my entree was fresh so that's a plus. Now this is probably a scathing review to some but I worked in restaurants for 15 years and this place has a lot of potential, it just needs a little guidance. read more

This was one of my worst dining experiences in a long while. The service was poor, we waited about twenty minutes before a waiter delivered the menu, we waited another 20 minutes for a requested wine list and still longer for our order to be taken. We were there one hour and forty five minutes before our meal finally arrived. All four entrees were over cooked and cold. The vegetables were wilted. Needless to say we were not happy. We complained and asked for a manager. The manager was not there and another waiter introduced himself as the acting manager and apologized for the meal, offering a 10% discount. It would have been better to have comped at least one entree. We had chosen the restaurant due to it's close proximity to a movie theater so that we could eat and go to a movie. We were looking forward to the river view, a good meal and an enjoyable evening. The poor service and the food and the missed show ruined our evening. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

Walked into the river grill on Sunday afternoon to enjoy some drinks and lunch. Upon walking in the front door, the hostess stand was unattended and it happens to b located right next the the bathrooms doors. While waiting to b greeted, the men's room toilet flushes and two seconds later a man with kitchen attire pops out to ask if we have been greeted....all happening after the toilet flushed and no hand washing occurred. Not mention the awful stench of human feces came out behind the kitchen worker came out if the toilet. Such a turn off. We told the host when he finally came to us that we were not staying. Disgusting that a kitchen employee takes a disgusting crap and doesn't wash his hands. The health department should b made aware!!! Will never eat there ever!!! read more

Really awful food, over cooked and overpriced. Terrible service, slow and graceless. No ambiance. If you value your stomach, wallet, and eating companions, stay away from this restaurant. One of the worst meals I have had. This restaurant may have been good at one time but has lost its way. We were a group of 12. Three in the group ordered paella which was more of a soup or stew than paella. The Caesar salad was wilted lettuce bathed in dressing topped with powder Parmesan cheese. The presentation was disappointing the taste was worst. The service was sub-par and our server seamed to be overwhelmed. There is no value here. Our total bill was over 750.00. Given the cost and experience I suggest avoiding this establishment. Take a 25 minute ride to Montgomery and Visit Ward Bridge Grill, if you want to stay closer there is always Cosimos in Newburgh. I don't see a reason to have a meal here. read more

While the food was decent, the service was TERRIBLE! We were one of two tables seated inside and only 8 tables were on the outside patio so it wasn't busy. We had to call our server over to serves us water, the bartender and waiter were too busy texting at the bar to pour us our wine, we never saw our waiter again until the check was ready. Acceptable view of the water, but the food and service made me want to walk the plank. The "homemade" caesar salad is a lie: the dressing tasted goopy and artificial, lacked the flavor of any fresh ingredients, and obviously came from some wholesale vat of some mass-produced, salad-topping atrocity. The "peppercorn sauce" accompanying my steak sandwich was described as an au poivre cream-based sauce by my waiter, but turned out being canned gravy with a pathetic two whole peppercorns in it. My partner and I TRIED to eat here and we were seated right away. We were served bread and water quite promptly...and then proceeded to sit at the table for a good 15 mins (and that's being generous) and no one ever came back to our table. We attempted to pass some time by looking through the menu's, but we both opened our menus and neither of us had an actual menu in the book! No one came to even ask for a drink order, appetizer order, or anything of the sort, so we got up and walked out through the restaurant to leave. There were at least 6 servers/employees sitting at the bar chatting. As we walked out, I let the hostess know of the situation and she seemed very surprised. As we proceeded out of the front door a server runs out and asks us if we are all set and asks why we were leaving. Should not have been a shock there! read more

I must say I'm extremely surprised to see the litany of negative reviews for The River Grill. My boyfriend and I went there for an early dinner one afternoon and we had nothing short of an extremely positive experience. Our service was great. Our server was attentive and on top of everything. As for the food, we enjoyed everything we had. We started with the Shrimp and Lobster en croute which was delicious. Then we shared the filet mignon quesadilla. Also great and the meat was extremely tender. Our salad course was a nicely done ceasar. Then we shared an entree which was the shrimp stuffed with crab meat with steamed vegetables and potato croquette. Delicious! The restaurant split our entree for us onto two plates and gave us our own sides. And didn't charge us a sharing fee or for soda refills. This place doesn't warrant two and a half stars in my book. I like to think of myself as a diner with high standards and this place fit the bill. Plus the view was beautiful. I smell something fishy and it wasn't my dinner. These reviews call into question if there is a vendetta of some sort against this place. Some of the reviews aren't from people who experienced the food or service or nitpick on stupid things. read more

Been here twice. Once for Mother's Day in 2015. Lettuce in salad was old and lobster tail was raw after waiting over an hour for entree. My second time was last night for co workers 40th bday. We had a terrible meal at The River Grill last night. It was a Wednesday night, but the outdoor dining area of the restaurant on the beautiful Hudson was full. Once our full party had assembled, it took several minutes for a waiter to even approach our table. We were there more than 30 minutes before we were even allowed to order our appetizers. The kitchen staff is capable because our starters were creative and tasty. However, our main course was very, very delayed. Two seafood dishes were cold, a grilled chicken dinner was over-cooked...and cold, and my filet was covered with brown gravy (for some reason) and the gravy had a film on it that indicated to me that it had been under a heat lamp for some time. All our vegetables were limp, overdone, and cold and my rice had a chemical taste that warned me not to finish it. Once I got my steak, they had removed my fork and I had no knife. I couldn't eat and I sat there trying to signal one of the waitstaff for help. My wife eventually gallantly got up and went across the room to get my utensils. We ate most of our meals because we had been in the restaurant for two hours and we were really hungry by that time. The busboy was sympathetic to the fact that we had waited so long, but the waiters were nowhere to be found. Someone from our party went to the woman at the door to ask for the manager; he was told that the manager was not there last night. Later, after lots of protests, one of the waiters came to the table and claimed to be the manager on duty for the night. He was little help since the meal (after 2 1/2 hours) was over. The Hudson is lovely on a summer evening, but our experience at this inept restaurant was terrible. I will not return. read more

We went here to celebrate a family birthday. We dined inside because it was so hot out on the patio. It took a while to get seated because we were a large group, but this was a minor inconvenience. Our server was efficient, but not overwhelming. He was very helpful in selecting various entrees, and very accommodating for taking care of the children in our group. Our food was served in a timely fashion, and we had plenty of time to enjoy the fine cuisine and the company. We had a wide variety of offerings, and all of us were very happy with the quality and quantity of the food. I highly recommend the River Grill, and I know that we will be going back. read more

I have eaten here before and the food was OK but tonight it was horrible. my wife and I had fish. my Seabass was undercooked her Maki was overcooked the portions were small and the price was on the high side. I don't mind paying A premium but I do expect the food to be good. If it were not for our terrific server, Trevor, I would give one star. He took back my Blue Point Oysters and did not charge us, though I ate two. They were of questionable freshness (slightly mushy and fishy). Bluepoints are usually plump and firm. Really inexcusable was the "Cocktail Sauce" - it was ketchup with a dab of horseradish. No thanks. The crab cake was okay, nothing outstanding, and not made with lump crab as advertised. The crab meat was shredded..The brownish/grayish color of the interior was off-putting, and it did not have any kick.I believe that a Maryland style crab cakes should have a bit of dry mustard and cayenne or Tabasco in the mix. It was supposed to come with an aioli sauce- but instead was a strange, flour-thickened concoction.'Very bland. My husband enjoyed his cold beer and turkey burger. I will admit that his fries were really good. With seven restaurants in a row on this lovely waterfront, this restaurant really needs to step up its game. read more

This is the third large family event we've held at the River Grill, and until now, we've always been very happy with the quality of the food, the presentation, the service, and of course the location. Our most recent meal wasn't up to the standards we've come to expect. While the French onion soup and all of the seafood dishes (from appetizers to sandwiches to mains) were well-received, the ribeye steaks were tough and the chicken "parmesian" and a chicken Italiano sandwich were disappointing. One of the chicken Italiano sandwiches looked delicious, but the other could best be described as "blackened." Service was good--when we could get it. I understand that large groups are a challenge, but I was surprised that nobody came to check on us after our meals were delivered. The "parmesian" was served with about two tablespoons of tomato sauce for a half-platter of linguini, but there was no one to ask for a bit more. Likewise, those of us who were drinking only water often sat waiting for glasses to be filled. The restaurant was not full, so I'm not sure what was causing service problems--or a mysterious shortage of menus. Still, it's a lovely spot--so if you do go, here are my dining tips based on today's visit: 1. Make your menu choice quickly so you're ready in case your menu is taken away and given to another table of diners before you get a chance to order. 2. One you have ordered, ask the server to confirm any sides or other elements of the dish that are important to you. (One diner is still pondering The Mystery of the Missing Wasabi Slaw--but I put it down to having two versions of the menu.) 3. Unless you have a dietary restriction, stick with the seafood. 4. Opt for the garden salad instead of the Caesar. 5. Do NOT upgrade to sweet potato fries unless you like the waffle ones, which are never crispy. 6. Ask for a carafe of water at the start of your meal. read more

Ive been to this restaurant multiple times, and enjoyed every meal I've had. The service was perfect and the staff very friendly. Today i went with two of my daughters to have lunch for one of their birthday. Unbeknown to me they were hosting a bridal shower in the main dining room and a graduation party in the back out door area. The owner could not have been any nicer to seat us, the menu was a full one with specials. We ate our lunch which was stellar and the service was above par. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful. I started to get nervous when I was brought the wrong dish. I did have to wait some time to receive the right dish. Went there on a Monday evening. Was gorgeous weather, so we sat outside. Got our drinks OK (they forgot the garnish). Bread came about 10 minutes later. Waitress took our orders, and told us that the filet was a much thicker cut than the other steak. I ordered filet; husband ordered the "regular" steak. Got our salads, and mine had the wrong dressing. Waited an eternity (probably 45 minutes longer) for our entrees. The filet was NOT any thicker cut than regular steak, just much smaller (I did expect that with a filet). And it was full of, well not fat, not gristle...more like connective tissue separating it into "sections" of meat. Not like any filet I have ever had before. Suggestion: get the regular angus, not the filet. I always regret not ordering the angus, after "trying something different." At this point, I hear the waitress telling other tables about the specials that we were never told about. I wish we had...I would have ordered the angel hair pasta with seafood. Oh well... We didn't order dessert. Have to say, the water/bus server guy was awesome...he was so attentive and gave us the best service of anyone there! read more

My boyfriend and I ate there a couple of months ago because we got one of those on-line coupons. Well I saw the coupon again(they are always giving them for a reason!) and I had to share my experience. We both ordered the $30 seafood dishes, him the fra diablo and me the paella. Both dinners were horrible! ALL of the seafood in the dishes were so overcooked, I couldn't chew it. I wonder if when cook calls out, the dishwasher jumps in his place and tries to cook.... We will never go back there again. Even with the coupon, we still paid way more than we should have. Overpriced and terrible. Every time my husband and I go out to a new restaurant we rate it as compared to The River Grill in Newburgh. It truly is the benchmark in the industry. We have dined there many times over the past 14 years and have always been delighted with the flavors, ambiance and wide selection of entrees. The specials are always exotic and cooked to perfection. The hostess and servers make us feel like royalty. This is not your rush in, rush out chain eatery. The River Grill is fine dining at its best. read more
