We were visiting with friends and they recommended we go to dinner at The River Grill, which is one of many restaurants on the water. It looked nice when we went in and they honored the reservation. We sat at a table on the water with a nice view and from there, it was just one story after another. We had to flag down a server after nearly 25 minutes since no one ever came to our table. Danielle then said she would take our table and the manager then came over as she saw we were disappointed and she offered the four of us 4 drinks or 4 desserts. That was thoughtful and the drinks were well prepared and tasty. They served some bread, not a huge quantity with butter and tapenade which was nice, but you had to chase them down for a refill. Three of us ordered Chilean Sea Bass and one ordered a Seafood Paella. The seafood paella came out piping hot and the three Chilean Sea Bass were sent back as the food and vegetables were cold. The Manager then came over again and took our three plates back and had them properly heated and then offered us desserts since we already had the drinks, but we were interested in a nice relaxing dinner, not the freebies. The attitudes of the manager and server changed dramatically to the point where we felt so uncomfortable and wanted to get out of there. There are any other restaurants on the water that surely look more appealing and have to be much better customer service oriented than this place was. read more

Located on Newburgh's waterfront area, views of the Hudson and the mountain back drop can't really be beat for scenic views. Parking surprisingly is free, and able to find parking after less than 5 minutes of searching. (This was during 2pm on a summer afternoon during peak tourist season.) Upon entering The River Grill, you could tell that the premium tables were the ones located outside under a shaded awning. I came here with a party of 10 adults and 3 babies. Without reservations we had no chance to sit outside with such a large party, so we were seated in the indoor section. The decor was mostly themed nautical, with a large wooden steering wheel hung on the wall, and a few model sail boats on display. Sea blue painted walls, and a wooden alcohol bar made up the rest of the indoor area. The indoor area looked as if it could fit about 30 people. The lunch service was still being served. Our waitress came around and was pleasant. She informed us of the specials of the day, and promptly took our orders. I ordered from the raw bar. A dozen raw little neck clams, and half dozen raw oysters. The food came out in good time with appetizers first. The little neck clams were okay. They had all their juices and were freshly opened and chilled on a bed of ice. I would probably change their supplier since the little necks did not have any briny taste and tasted as if they came from a fresh water clam bed. The little necks were also small in size. My local Shoprite usually stocks better quality little necks; both larger and more briny tasting. My oysters were fresh, but as the little necks, did not taste briny at all. Given, the menu did not advertise the oysters as from choice areas such as Blue Point or Prince Edward Island, so one cannot expect these oysters to be compared to such quality. Others in my party ordered the Bree Burger, The Fish N' Chips Catch of the Day (Soft Shell Crabs - Special of the Day), A Fettuccine Alfredo pasta dish (Special of the Day), Crab Cake Appetizer and an Angus Burger. The Bree Burger is served on a croissant bun. The beef patty appeared to be perhaps 1/2 a pound. It is cooked to order. The people of my party said it tasted okay, but did not think a croissant's taste and texture are what they were use to for a burger. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at the affordability of the selection. I am accustomed to waterfront establishments to serve items at a premium price; totally expecting the price to hit $35-$50 per person. In fact, though I ordered the premium items, I paid less than $30, and my wife ordering the non-premium items spent around than $15. (Not including tax and tip amounts.) The bathrooms could be an issue. They were average in terms of cleanliness, however the problem is one person at a time. There is one restroom for the guys and one for the girls. If the place gets peak, I think you can expect a backup for the," head." This restaurant appears to be the calmer of the restaurant offerings on the Waterfront. If you plan to come for a peaceful meal, this is the one to come to. Overall, I give this establishment a 3-star, "A-Okay," experience. read more

Enh. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Service was lackluster (The waitress was trying her best, but seemed to be super swamped and it took forever to get anything, the busboy wasn't even trying to get the water in the glass when he poured it, and the woman in the front seating people looked like she would have rather been anywhere else), and the food was uninspired. It wasn't bad, and I normally wouldn't have minded uninspired, but for the prices you expected a little something more. :P I suspect it's a management issue, needing to inspire the workers to achieve more than just mediocre. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants. Sitting outside with a view of the Hudson and some really great food is a warm-weather treat. During the winter months it is cozy inside. On my visit last week, there were a few unusual snags: the French onion soup was minus most of the cheese, and our waiter, who was a little rough around the edges mixed up our order. When he straightened it out, it still wasn't good. Before I let the whole evening deteriorate I called over the manager. He was most apologetic and replaced our entrees with the top notch food I'm used to. I was really impressed with how it was handled, and the River Grill remains a favorite. read more

While the food was fantastic, the service was a joke. From a waiter that could not be bothered, a Maitre D that did not communicate with his staff, the experience was far from what we expected. From the moment we got there, we were concerned. The Maitre D asked us 3 times if our server had been to introduce himself, which he did 15 minutes later. The server brought out my son's food before he took the adults order...which we asked him to hold until appetizers were served, the server forgot half of our appetizers and the bus boys took away unfinished food. Needless to say, we will not be going back, we will go to one of the other restaurants on the waterfront. read more

We always love this restaurant! I'd give it 5 stars but Yelp blocks my reviews when I do. We were here for an early midweek dinner. We had the French onion soup which had a nice hearty broth and lots of gooey cheese. Absolutely delicious. The bread basket was too good (ate too much) and the salads were nice & crispy. For entrees we had the angus steak, really good and cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the pasta Florentina, which was so-o- good. No room for desert. The service was very good. I must start this review by saying Thank You to the chef and restaurant owner Mark. I have done many parties at the River Grill over the last 5 years,so when it came time for TBJ to find a place to hold our community Seder I went straight to The River Grill. Mark said yes and tackled and preparing foods he has never done before. The Seder was held April 15 with what he thought was a count of 80 people. On Monday the 14 we called Chef Mark to inform him we would be 90 people. On Tuesday we walked in and at 5PM and found a restaurant set up for the Seder with a warm and friendly staff who served the group with no hitches,and could not have done any less to please everyone. This was my first time eating here. It was the restaurant with the least wait time for seating. First, there was only one bathroom working. The other bathroom sink was broken. It was dirty, smelled disgusting and paper towels all over the floor. Obviously it was not cleaned regularly. Nor was there any concern about it so it seems. Second, we sat down and waited 10 minutes for a wait staff to come to the table. It was a wait for our drinks and an hour for our appetizer only after we inquired about it. One staff said the kitchen was backed up out waitress said kitchen lost our order. Finally got our app and our lunch, nothing to rave about. Bill was 70 dollars for 2 drinks, app and 2 sandwiches. I've eaten at some classy restaurants and paid the same for much more and way better service. When asked about speaking with a manager we were told there wasn't one. There was a "owner/chef". The waitress informed us she has worked there 10 years and she had an attitude. As someone who worked in food serv for many years myself I felt her service was inadequate. it wasn't even that busy. There was no compensation for our inconvenience and no attempt to appease us. Don't waste your money or time. Some things are just not worth the wait. read more

When my husband asks where I would like to go for Sunday Brunch, my first reaction is always The River Grill on the Waterfront in Newburgh. Not only is it a great locale but the food and the menu are consistently excellent. Today I had one of the specials: sea scallops with spicy seasoning over a bed of arugula with mandarin orange sections and cranberries. It was perfect! I also had a fabulous Bloody Mary- very well executed. Several weeks ago I had the lobster ravioli- also excellent! My husband had the rack of ribs- so much better than the rib place a few doors down! For dessert we shared something different- a deconstructed cannoli - cannoli filling (with chocolate) elegantly presented in a martini glass with chips of pastry to dip! Brilliant! We have been been there many times and I have never been disappointed. I even had my daughter's bridal shower there because the ambiance was intimate and elegant but not pretentious. The service is also very good- staff are friendly and attentive. Obviously during busy hours it's going to be more intense. I look forward to our next visit to The River Grill! I know that I will leave happy and satisfied! read more

The food is great but the manager needs to be fired. We have been there twice and she is horrible!!!! First time we went she let us stand at the door for 10 minutes without approaching us. Second time we saw her again on the stairs going upstairs and again she did not approach but waited for us to get someone to seat us. Our food was delicious and server was great but when we ordered dessert the staff started setting up for a party for the next day. I felt very uncomfortable so we moved to a different table. They then proceeded to come next to us again moving more tables. We needed all of ten minutes to finish our coffee. I literally felt like I should go sit on the sidewalk to drink my coffee. When I said something to the manager about how wrong this was she stated she couldn't pay her staff any longer. Totally unbelievable and unprofessional. She should not be a manager. So let me start with a positive,..the atmosphere is nice but unfortunately after being seated was basically ignored, the waitress stated taking the order of people who walked in after us so we flagged her down to get our drink order. We ordered drinks, calamari & 2 salads (my salad was the arugula & fig salad w heirloom tomatoes) when it came it was 3 cherry tomatoes cut in half, 3 small figs cut in half and a mountain of arugula. My boyfriend ordered the blackened chicken Caesar salad but got Cajun chicken, it still was very yummy but only had literally one crouton and one anchovy in it. Drinks were good but only half filled and over priced. Waitress was attentive over all. In a nutshell everything was not to full potential. At the end host came over to help clear table and while leaning over to do so actually looked down at my chest (eww) Won't be going back! Go to Captain Jakes next door 1000% better. read more

Nice little restaurant on the waterfront with beautiful views of the river and docks. A little pricey- $50 for two of us, and that was without any drinks! To start off we had bread with olive oil spread, delicious. I then got myself a shrimp cocktail which was the only downfall of my meal. For 10.50, I got a plate of 4 jumbo shrimp, which were not cleaned properly. My date and I were pleased with the meal itself. I really wanted crab cakes, which wasn't on the menu as a meal, but as an appetizer and our waitress, without a hassle, made it into a meal. It was delicious, came with a potatoe croquette and some veggies. Perfect size! My date ordered the duck salad with raspberry viniagrette and was also pleased with the flavors and the size. My wife and I had a wonderful dining experience here last evening. I can't fathom what is up with so many bad reviews...makes you wonder. The service was near perfect from when we walked in the door to when we paid the bill. They could just do a bit better on keeping the water glasses filled. I had they herb encrusted Tilapia, which was very nice. My wife had one of the specials, Shrimp and Pumpkin Ravioli. She wished the shrimp and ravioli had been spiced differently, but still enjoyed the dish. The garden salads of fresh greens, tomatoes, cukes and olives had a wonderful homemade dressing. The crusty bread with butter and tapenade were a nice start, and came to us just after sitting down. Sitting on the covered patio overlooking the Hudson on a warm late September evening was fabulous. Our waitress was great. The entrees are pricey, but not crazy and the wine was rather fairly priced. I would encourage people not to trust the 1 Star Yelp reviews for these guys. These people's experience had the be the exception to the rule, and if you have an experience worthy of 1 star, you should absolutely let the management know. I can't imagine paying $80-$100 for a meal for two, hating the whole experience, and then just heading home to complain on yelp. It makes no sense. read more

After reading reviews I felt good about taking 2 kids in the middle of winter for a casual lunch. a CASUAL lunch. In jeans we were SIGNIFICANTLY under dressed for white linen napkins and arm towels and the youngest patron excluding us was over 60 and in Sunday best expecting peace and quiet. The food was good, not great and the wait staff started great and then never showed up again after food was delivered. Overall a nice place but not what others painted. I'm assuming (could be wrong) their reviews of "kid friendly" and "casual" happen when the temperature is above single digits. Outside patio did look great but we decided hypothermia wasn't worth it. Would I try again? Perhaps in 30 years when the kids are grown and I'm wanting stuffy. read more

When the restaurant opened years ago, the food was good. I went a few times in the last year or two. And my son also went a few weeks ago. The food has become progressively worse. I don't mind paying $30 a plate for an incredible meal. I ordered a menu item, Mahi-Mahi with pineapple chili salsa with a side of rice and vegetables. I got a nice size piece of fish with about a third of it covered in the salsa. The fish itself tasted like boiled nothing. It was grilled or something with NO seasoning. I think they were hoping the salsa would do something for this fish. They'd have had to SMOTHER it in this salsa to give it flavor. PLUS, the vegetables: plain, boring steamed vegetables. The rice: I think it was plain uncle ben's. For $30, everything on my plate should taste incredible. I think it's important for owners and chefs to continuously review, taste and check on the food. This dish has so much potential to be incredible, but it was a fail because I think no one is checking on how things are tasting. That being said, fair is fair....my calamari appetizer was cooked nicely, not rubbery. My dessert...a cappuccino and a piece of pistachio ricotta cake were both delicious. And the service was pretty prompt and friendly. But I can't help but give only 2 stars for a lousy main entree. it was honestly no better than a meal at the diner. My husband felt the same about his meal, and my son who had just been there said his pasta with vegetables tasted like it was boiled and served that way. I go to the waterfront for the waterside atmosphere, but I won't be back to the River Grill. At least when we go to Cosimo's on Union, every single thing on the menu is delicious. read more

The service was pretty bad. With a reservation we waited 15 minutes for a table. (We had someone on crutches). Then we waiting another 15 minutes to order drinks. Finally the hostess apologized for the delay but never offered to buy us a round even when the service didn't improve. Then they only accepted one coupon when we had two buy an entree and get $18 off the second entree. Good fairly good, view exceptional. Not rushing back. read more

Went with a large party and they only had one server so the service was attentive, but slow. The view is incredible. Food was good, but slow in coming out. Server had a hard time keeping track of who ordered what. Same thing with the checks. Would have been good to have two people assigned to the large group. We had 6 pm reservations for 5, we showed up about 20 minutes early. Told the hostess we would wait, if need be, she then proceeds to bring us to a table without any umbrella (mind you they had umbrella between tables that were empty) we told her we needed a shaded table or medical reasons (it was well over 85 degrees) She said she would try to accommodate. She walks back says yes, then says no. Another employee then proceeded to move an umbrella to a table nearby as they complained about the heat, when questioned we were told they were already seated. Our son went around back and there were 8 tables properly spaced and not in use, to which we were told, no those are for reserved parties...umm, we had reservations and were currently at the time of said reservation. We are in NYC, and do not get to see our kids often...while I cannot rate the quality of the food, the customer service is horrible...so no stars from me(I am forced to rate to get met entire review posted) Thanks for putting a damper on Father's Day... we wound up going elsewhere read more

I regularly go to this restaurant & always enjoy myself. Unfortunately this time was different. I went on July 3rd to the waterfront to see the fireworks & had made reservations here. We were seated & given menus. We were served water after about 5 minutes but no waiter. After about another 15 mins a waiter came over & asked if we were being helped. We said no & the waiter said ok I can help. He took our drink order, dropped them off & read the specials. We waited another 10/15 mins& he finally came back to take our order. The restaurant was clearly understaffed & everyone(especially the manager) was running around like crazy. And hour and a half after sitting we received our entree. The food tasted good but was a little cold. We finished & I got up to get the check since who knows how long it would take for someone to come to the table. Overall, I was disappointed in the service. I expected it to be busy since the fireworks were going on that night but I would think that a restaurant would be prepared & know how to handle the influx of ppl. We have been to this restaurant several times. The food is consistent and the view is beautiful. Clearly the owner has no clue how to run the front of the house... Where everyone eats. The service was less than acceptable. We had 7:30 pm reservations and it took 3 hours to complete the service. The table was not cleared after each course. Doubt we would come back and would NOT recommend it. There are many other restaurants that have good food AND good service. Go elsewhere. read more

My family went to the river grill for my mother's 60th birthday. The best thing we had was the lobster quesadilla appetizer, but everything else was very disappointing. The sangria was not tasty, and the crab cake burger was very dry and bland. The worst part of the experience was that I had asked the hostess 3 times to have the waiter surprise my mother with a birthday dessert. He just plopped the check on the table, and my mother was visibly hurt that we didn't even think to have them surprise her. When I commented to the waiter how disappointed I was, he didn't offer an apology. After spending around $130 for lunch for 4, we spent the whole day regretting that we hadn't gone somewhere else. We saw a huge rat run into the kitchen from the outside as we left, which also totally grossed us out. read more

I brought my father here for his birthday and needless to say, for the price and quality of the food, it is the worst in the Hudson Valley. The service was not all together appealing also. When we walked in, the host was sitting on a chair texting on his phone and greeted us like we were walking into a funeral. We chose to sit on the patio because the view of the Hudson is amazing. That is probably the only highlight of the whole experience. I ordered a seafood bisque to start and it should've ended there because it was cold and bland. It tasted to me like it was canned soup. Main entree was the seafood paella which was also cold and had no flavor. They gave you a lot of rice but did not seem to be cooked fully because it was not fluffy but hard. The quality of the seafood did not seem fresh at all. After a big hit in my wallet and an upset stomach, me and everyone I know will be avoiding The River Grill. For the prices as high as they were and being on the Hudson you would expect a lot more. What a shame. read more
