Just finished brunch here and it was a very tasty meal, indeed. Four stars because even after our wait (that was longer than the time they gave us) it took almost 45 minutes to get our biscuits and gravy. There was probably something that happened but our sever was just not that great and I feel like had he told us about the wait on the food our moods would have been a bit better and I would have given 5 stars. Two mornings in Lawrence means two mornings of delicious lavender lattes. I was introduced to The Roost on Saturday for brunch with friends while visiting the area for the first time. While we did have to wait longer than originally quoted, eventually we sat down and were tended to by a friendly and attentive waiter. I scarfed down my breakfast sammie, which was everything I wanted it to be; thick-cut sourdough, fresh veggies, perfectly cooked eggs and a delicious aioli. Paired with the above-mentioned lavender latte, I was a happy and full girl. The next day I returned just to grab another of the lattes to-go and start my Sunday off right. Anyway, I had the the Portobello Sammy and it was SO tasty, and the consistency of the 'shrooms was fantastic. The flavors of the other things on it? Sweeeeeeet!!! No, not like sweet, sweet. But like wonderful, sweet. Hubby ordered the Meatball Grinder and was kind enough to let me taste it. It was good too, but not as good as MINE! It took the longest time to get, first my iced coffee, which I forgot to mention was one of the finest Breve Mocha I've ever sipped on. And then FOREVER to get our food. Not just great, but AMAZING. We were in town for Thanksgiving and staying at a nearby hotel when we decided to give this place a try for breakfast. We loved it so much we stopped by later in the day for more coffee and went back for more the next day! The baked goods were incredibly fresh and honestly the best breads, biscuits and pastries we've ever had. I suspect because it's from a nearby local farm. The homemade biscuits and homemade apple butter are wonderful and everything else is good to boot. This place is so amazingly delicious that we ate breakfast here twice during our short 3 day visit to Lawrence. This place is the Mecca for bloody Mary's. I tried 4 different ones of a selection of about 8 and I can't decide which one was better. They were all amazing. They also had the best coffee that I tasted in the area, hell, better than the crap they serve in Southern California. For breakfast on both days I ordered a breakfast sandwich on a biscuit with a side of potatoes. This was seriously one of the best things I've ever had for breakfast. Ever. I got the Kansan breakfast and the omelet, both of which were reasonably priced and very tasty. I really like their breakfast potatoes. Wow, this was the best breakfast I've had in a long time. We walked in about 11:10am on a Saturday and got quoted a 45-50min wait for 2 people (we waited more like 30). I have to eat gluten free and while there isn't a printed out gluten free menu, nearly the whole thing can be made gluten free. I got The Kansan (which is usually 2 eggs, bacon or sausage, toast and potatoes) with a (naturally gluten free) potato pancake subbed for the eggs and gluten free toast for the regular. This wasn't the 100% most delicious meal God's graced the planet, but this meal was GOOD and HOT and FAST. It filled me up perfectly after eating every drop (without being too full) and still feeling full 5 1/2 hours later. Also- none of that gross greasy feeling you get after something like IHOP. My daughter and I had a wonderful breakfast at the Roost today. It seemed to be a busier than usual Sunday brunch crowd. After waiting a long time to be seated, the waitress was very prompt in greeting us. She was amazing! Kim was her name. She had a wonderful smile and a great attitude even though she was working very hard. When my daughter and went to the bar to get our cup of coffee, I said, "I love Kim". My daughter then said, "I was just about to say the same thing". In an instant, Kim was the positive spark we needed. Then to top it off, a nice man, (I assume he was an owner/manager) came over to our table and offered to bring us some cookies to eat while we waited for our food to arrive. We were overjoyed! I was fortunate enough to visit for breakfast twice on a recent trip. I love places like this where you can get a great breakfast at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend the potato pancakes if that is your type of thing. I tried some of their sweet treats, specifically the dark chocolate truffle on a stick thing, and it was very good. Saturday brunch. Party of 4. Ordered the rooster, corn beef hash, biscuits and gravy, the Kansan, traditional benny, and French toast double. Liked the benny, but their hollandaise was okay. It had a cheddar taste that I have never had before. When asked for extra side of it, it was additional 75 cents. Would have been nice if the waitress (Molly) let the customer know that it will be an additional charge beforehand. French toast is very fluffy but lacks flavor so needs maple syrup. I usually prefer my French toast without syrup. Their biscuits and gravy was ON POINT. My favorite out of everything I had tried here. Wait was about 20 minutes, so I recommend you come in smaller parties or earlier. Server was friendly. Visit was pleasant. read more

First visit. The food was delicious, but service was terrible. My group of 3 was not greeted while waiting to be seated by 3 different staff that passed by. Then upon being seated, it took 15 minutes for our waiter to take our drink order. Following placing our order our waiter never returned or spoke to our table. She repeatedly approached every table around us, but did not once return to check I . We waited 20 minutes upon finishing dining to finally go to the bar to ask to pay our bill. During this time our waiter visited 2 tables around us twice, and another 3 times, repeatedly passing us without glance. When we requested to pay at the bar, the could not help us as they claimed they couldn't print our tickets. After another 10 minutes we asked again to pay our bill so we could leave. Our waiter gave our tickets to another staff to check us out. Maybe our waiter had a bad day, but it was incredibly disappointing to feel like a table of 3 minority women were being intentionally ignored. Feeling invisible isn't fun. read more

The Roost is one of my favorite places to have brunch in Lawrence. The atmosphere, the employees, and the food are all great. The two standouts for me are the barista, Chelsea Rae, who makes a mean honey nut latte (and a delicious iced jasmine tea with honey), and the bacon. You will not have better bacon in your lifetime, guaranteed. The only reason I don't give the Roost five stars is that their pancakes and waffles are quite dense. I prefer lighter, fluffier pancakes and waffles. But other than that, awesome. read more
