Stopped by here on our way though town - end-destination was the Hocking Hills. Definitely has an old-school/small town vibe, which sat well for me, and the prices reflected it (very reasonable for 2025). Lots of selection, whether hot dogs or burgers, so be ready if the line is rushing through on a lunch break. Apparently the special here is a root beer slush, which my buddy got and was happy with. I ended up getting a burger and hot dog, both were on a toasted bread, which is a little bit unique. Loved that the menu is pretty pickle-forward. Flavors were on-point, the bread could have been a little less-firm, but maybe it's because I took a couple minutes to step to my burger and it firmed up like drier toast. Kind of wished I got the chili dog, but was completely stuffed before the end of the meal, so wasn't able to further gorge. Will be stopping here again when we make a dedicated trip to Parkersburg later in the summer. read more

I love this Hot Dog and Root beer shack in Parkersburg WV and highly recommend it and will definitely be going back!!! There is NO dining inside right now due to Covid-19 but you can call ahead or just show up at drive thru and that's what I do There are so many hot dog Varieties to chose from...but I go with the Sweet SOS and Spicy SOS with a large frothy root beer to go. They serve them ENGLISH Bun style and the chili or sauce as some call it is killer. I like both, the sweet and the spicy... They also have dogs with peanut butter...I am not brave to try it yet but cashier says they sell a lot of them!!!! Now me, a lot of peanut butter on hot dogs would be to sell one, so not sure if her and my standards are the same!!! If in the area, google map directions...and thank me later!!!! read more

[[Sat.11.Feb.2023 @ 11:30am]] Wife & I was out and about that morning, it was approaching lunch time, so we started having conversation what type of lunch we was up to, like family restaurant, quick in and out, drive thru, then it was type food we were up for, Steak, Seafood, Hamburgers, HotDogs, Wings, Pizza, American, Chinese, Japanese etc. We decided on Hamburgers / HotDogs with Fries / Onion Rings, so now it was time to narrow it down to either a Large Restaurant, Fast Food or Diner Type, we was decided to go with a Diner type. Since we was in the area of 7th & East St area of Parkersburg it was decided to head on over to "The RootBeer Shack" on Staunton Ave. We arrived there about 11:30am and the parking lot was about 80% full of parked customer vehicles and Drive Thru lane was full as well, now that is a Good Sign that the food is good when there is continuous customers coming through. The outside of the Diner was clean as well as the inside, customers was setting all around enjoying the ambiance and food of what the RBS had to offer, we walked up to the counter and was met by a front staff employee that was very friendly, helpful, kind and nice with a Great Attitude, the other staff workers all had there jobs that they were all in sync doing together and were very supportive of each other, that is exactly what you want to notice is a good Team that will give customer a Great Experience. Wife & I ordered (4) Hotdogs with Slaw & Spicy Sauce and couple Pepsi Drinks and we would be dining in, the Front Counter worker stated that it may take a little longer then usual do to amount customers and they had a large Hotdog order of (20+) to get prepared and ours would be next, which that was fine. Since they had a large hotdog order before our order and it would be few minutes we decided while waiting on our hotdogs, we asked if we could try couple bowls of Chili and could we get that while we waited on our hotdogs, staff worker stated for sure. We went and had a seat at a table and in just (2-3) minutes our bowls of Chili was brought out to us with Crackers, we started taking a few bites of the Chili and my wife and i looked at each other and we could tell by our eye contact with each other that this was Good! and not only Good but (excuse my language) ~ "Down wright Dam Good!", We both was so enthused, exited on the Taste of there Chili. This chili was very Delicious!, no doubt about that, we would have to say that "T.R.B.S." has the #1 Chili in town and it surly beats Wendy's Chili, we defiantly enjoyed the taste of there Chili! Now once we had finished our Chili it was like 3-5minutes later our (2) Slaw & Spicy Sauce Hotdogs we ordered each was brought out to our table, we had taken a bite each of our hotdogs and oh my goodness it was so good the Slaw was wright on point and the Spicy Sauce had the Perfect Heat and Spice for the Great tasting Hotdog, the Bun was just as perfect as the rest of the Hotdog, we were so astonished by the food we had here, it was just absolutely DELICIOUS! We sat there and talked about how Good this entire food order was and how convenient this establishment was to us just across the river from us and within (1/2 mile) from downtown where my wife works and my self i am retired and i usually drop lunch off to her at her office, that we are defiantly positive "The RootBeer Shack" has the "Broadway Sandwich Shop & Crystals Diner" beat on Delicious Tasting Food and it is more convenient straight inline path to my Wife office downtown. We are Defiantly Constant Customers it will not be any longer trying to figure out where to go to get something quick and good for lunch, it will always be now "The RootBeer Shack"! Great little place for good hot dogs and root beer (floats)! Only downside is: It's currently under new ownership and has very little staff. (Due to the whole Corona Virus/ unemployment problem that's nationwide and lack of willing workers these days) most of the staff are teenagers who will be returning to school soon which will leave the owner in more of a need for more staff. Due to this there's long lines wrapped around the entire building and parking lot out into the road. (No dine in eating at this time) Also they're currently operating on very limited hours 11 am - 4 pm---FYI But if you're patient the food and root beer (floats) are quite good!! I wish the owners lots of luck and hope everything works out for them. Please give them a chance to serve you and your family. A frosty mug of root beer topped with root beer icy slush, hot dogs with grilled crispy buns, and fried sides - it doesn't get much better than that! First: This place convinced me that peanut butter belongs on hot dogs. Trust me, it's true! Intrigued? Read on! I stopped at The Root Beer Shack during a drive from Cleveland to Richmond VA on a sunny Saturday. It was the perfect spot for a road trip lunch. The building is indeed shack-like. There's a small parking lot, a small porch with a few tables, more tables and counters and stools along the windows inside, and an ordering counter. There's also a drive-thru here to get food and drinks to go. The staff were friendly and service was quick. (Given the hot dogs, burgers, fried sides, fast service would be expected.) The ladies working that day seemed to be having fun, and took care in the food preparation. More on that below. Overall, pretty much the atmosphere you'd expect in a place called The Root Beer Shack. Definitely a place for the locals, in a good way. On to the food: I got the HUGE mug of root beer slushie, a refreshing beverage for a warm summer day. (That's a root beer topped with a root beer flavored icy slushie topping instead of having ice in the mug. Had to have a root beer at the Root Beer Shack!) I also got two dogs and a side of fried green beans. The green beans were as expected - fried, similar to TGIFridays, and served with ranch for dipping. This place has a TON of topping combo options for their dogs and burgers, so it took me a while to decide. I settled on the Slaw Dog and the Cheryl Dog. The sides of the buns on both were grilled on a flat top, making the outsides crispy - a nice and unexpected feature. The slaw dog was semi-classic - a sweet, creamy chopped slaw and ketchup. The Cheryl dog was taking a chance: "spicy sauce" and peanut butter. The "spicy sauce" turned out to be a thin chili-like meat sauce (like a Michigan sauce for us upstate NYers, but less meat and more chunky). The peanut butter was smeared under the hot dog. The combo of the spicy sauce and peanut butter was almost satay-like, and just darn delicious. I'm sold - PB is a valid hot dog topping option. Overall, this place lived up to previous Yelp ratings. While Parkersburg itself may not be a destination in my future, it will be worth a detour on a road trip to grab lunch at this little "shack". read more

So while I was in town, I decided to check out the other hot dog joint in town. More of a "dine in" type place, you place your order at the counter, and they bring it out to you. The dogs here are served on a toasted (grilled) New England style coney bun, which add a nice twist. After the "bland" sauce at the other place, I opted for the spicy sauce here, and I'm glad I did. THIS is a great hot dog sauce. Rich, flavorful, and the spicy has a nice but not overwhelming bite to it. Served with mustard and onion, a really good hot dog!! Although a bit pricier (almost double) the other place, this is a much better hot dog, and worth the extra $. Next visit I'll try other items on the menu. read more

We werent very impressed. The hot dog flavor is good, however the prices compared to the portion sizes are a little extreme. We must have arrived on a down day or something because the coleslaw was dry and so was the sauce, what little we received. We liked the bun and the dog itself, but the whole trip was basically a one time thing. Even the nachos were of a very "store bought" variety and very salty. read more

I just loved it here - Everyone was smiling a s so nice - plus the food was super good. I had a gentlemen's dog - medium sauce and mustard ( which I picked brown) with onions. Fries were good and crispy. Turns out my wife can eat the sauce and got it on the chips they use for nachos. Lot's of people had the Root beer floats and that looked amazing - Barrel Beer so no caffeine, making it also safe for Sandy. This was the biggest bust on my recent trip to Charleston and Parkersburg, WV. I had planned going to this restaurant with the words Root Beer in it for weeks now, thinking the root beer would be awesome. They have limited hours, so I came on my 2nd day in town, after lunchtime. Turns out the root beer is not homemade, it's just Mug Root beer, imo, one of the worst rb in the world. They are actually famous for the root beer slush, which uses a machine to slush ice and then they add it to the top of the root beer. It basically adds 79 cents to their normal fountain drinks. I've had Mug at least 100 times previously, so this was no treat for me at least. If you want homemade rb, just go to North End Tavern. read more

Look, if you have limited funds and need a quick lunch, this is a good place to do it. The staff are super friendly, and are easily the star of this place. The food... well, let's say that the food is barely a step above gas station food. Let's be real about it. It is located in a bad part of town, and it blends in very well with the surroundings. The decor, the exterior... let's call it... white-trash americana? Sorry, but taking a hot dog out of a pack and pouring some SAMS club fries into grease is not exactly fine dining.
