I did not have a good experience due to ongoing communication issues. Over several months, I made repeated attempts to get responses to questions and concerns about the care I received, without success. During my visit, Dr. Chin indicated he would promptly send a report to my internist, but I had to contact the office multiple times before it was sent, nearly requiring me to reschedule that appointment. Additionally, the information shared with me during my examination and scan differed significantly from what was reported to my internist. There may be an explanation for this discrepancy, but despite multiple attempts to follow up, I was unable to obtain clarification. Clear and timely communication is important to me as a patient, and this was unfortunately lacking. read more

I went to Dr. Chin about some concerns about how my toenail was healing. Dr. Chin did something that's too uncommon among doctors: he really listened. A lot of doctors give superficial formulaic responses, almost like they're reciting a textbook. The good doctors synthesize their knowledge with the specifics that the patient is telling them. Dr. Chin did just that. He gave me a lot of details about why my current condition made sense given my earlier injury and why all the signs he was seeing that everything was healing normally. read more

I went in for a simple bunion surgery with Michael Chin and I had to have two surgeries afterwards at NORTHWESTERN to correct his major blunders. I went from being a runner to never being able to run again. He fractured my foot and gave me a a major cock toe. Two years later I'm better thanks to doctors at NW. It should be easier to access lawsuits against doctors. They're buried and mine wasn't the first. read more

If you are having a problems with your foot or ankles Doctor Chin is the doctor you need to see. I had so much pain in my heel that it was very hard to walk . Doctor Chin had my fitted for inserts and gave me advice on the proper foot wear. He also recommended EPAT treatments . He told me that many of his patients after receiving EPAT treatments were able to start running again after their 3rd or 4th treatment. My insurance did not cover the treatments but it was the best thing that I ever did to correct my condition. After three treatments my heel pain was gone and I could return to my daily workout routine. I was at the end of my rope and Doctor Chin got me back on track. . If you are experiencing any type of foot problem I would highly recommend that you see Doctor Chin . Incredibly disappointing experience. When I received my bill and questioned the charges, referring to a conversation Dr.Chin's assistant had with me about estimated cost for inserts and insurance coverage, the assistant denied giving me such quotes. Perhaps this was because her boss and their billing person was standing next to her when I questioned the charges. The billing person was somewhat helpful in clarifying the charges but customer service overall was a tremendous disappointment especially after having had relatively positive interactions previously. I was so frustrated to the point that I'm not even going to redo my inserts fitting and would rather pay for inserts I never use versus continuing to work with this business and the staff. Really such a bummer because I love running and the work they do but the customer service component is lacking. Also I concur with another review regarding wait time. Been here 3-4 times with some foot issues. The doctor is actually friendly and knowledgeable but they need to do a ton of work around their customer service, scheduling, etc. The two stars go directly to the Doctor. Never once have I been seen within 30 minutes of my original appointment and every single time "the doctor is running behind". Usually I get the canned 15 minutes when in the end it would be around 40 minutes. There is a general sense of apathy from the front desk as well so unless you don't have anywhere to be, like a job, then you are fine. I will be looking for a better podiatrist that better accommodates my situation. read more

Had been to The Running Institute about 5 years ago to evaluate my foot and went back a two months ago for a new issues. They charged me as a new patient...something that my insurance didn't cover as I was, not in fact, a new patient. While the diagnosis was nice to have, the doctor gave me two options for treatment, neither of which were covered by insurance as they are experimental...one was a $1000 laser treatment and one was a series of $1800 injections. So, massive insurance bill later and no treatments other than experimental ones that aren't covered by insurance...thanks but no thanks. read more

My feet suck! Flat and narrow, they're why I am no stranger to podiatrists; it takes both hands to count the pairs of orthotics I've had. Dr. Chin is a godsend and a game changer. I was quite pleased with my last podiatrist, but since that visit I began running - a lot. My current pair of orthotics were up to the task, but they weren't specifically designed for sports; distance running in particular. Getting used to the rigidity of orthotics takes time, but no amount of conditioning ever made long runs a pleasant experience. I had a nagging soreness on the edge of my foot that persisted a month after the Chicago Marathon. Afraid something serious was going on and my winter running plans might be sidelined, I went to Dr. Chin at Running Institute. The Running Institute is a fantastic, holistic, running-positive practice; from the great selection of trashy mags in the waiting room, to the mini Universal Sole store onsite - they think of everything. The practice focuses on the runner as a whole, not just their feet; they have an internist specializing in sports medicine and a chiropractor/acupuncturist on staff as well. The practice runs like a well-oiled machine and is quite tech savvy; the staff are equipped with iPads, able to look up your insurance coverage quickly, and the receipt for my visit was emailed to me before I reached the elevator. I've made three visits to RI. At my first exam, Dr. Chin listened to my concerns and eased any fears I had about serious injury; he thought the rigidity of my orthotics might be the culprit and suggested a few simple tweaks to reduce my discomfort. He also did a video gait analysis - reviewing my stride frame-by-frame; while the fit of my orthotics and shoes was good, Dr. Chin did prescribe a few PT exercises to correct other aspects of my gait that could cause future injury. Before I left, Dr. Chin showed me other types of orthotics well-suited for runners, including a softer, cork-based one. Enamored with the idea of an orthotic that was more forgiving, I decided to go for it. With a race coming up, I was advised to wait until I had at least 8 weeks to break them in. When I returned, I was casted for my cork orthotics; three weeks later, when they were ready, Dr. Chin trimmed them to fit my running shoes, checked the fit, instructed me how to break them in, and scheduled a follow up visit. They say the highest compliment you can pay a service provider is a referral; I have referred a few friends here - who also have reported very positive experiences - and wouldn't hesitate to refer other runners. I can't think of anything that would have made my Running Institute experience better. Having seen many podiatrists, this was the first I've seen that truly specializes in sports-based podiatry. I've completed a few long runs in my new orthotics and while I can't say it was like running on air, I can say my feet no longer feel like I ran barefoot on concrete for miles. TIP: Bring your running shoes and socks to your appointments. read more

I'm not sure it gets much better than Dr. Chin. From the minute I walked in with top of the foot pain, I felt at ease and well-cared for. I was petrified of being put back in a boot, as other doctors had done in the past. To my relief, Dr. Chin isn't quick to jump to the boot. Instead, he went out of his way to find alternative methods of relief so I could continue my running and my racing, including laser therapy and dextrose injections. Further, he doesn't believe in cortisone (as he shouldn't!). For me, it turned out not to be a stress fracture, but some extensor tendonitis, which has virtually disappeared within weeks with the prescribed therapy. But most importantly, Dr. Chin takes the time to really understand your pain. For my first appointment, he spent over an hour with me. Incredible, really, given that most of the time you see a doctor for about 10 minutes. I'm impressed, and I highly recommend Dr. Chin to runners everywhere. read more

Over the past 6 months, I have been to FIVE podiatrists in the Chicago area. The reason I went to so many is because nobody could correctly diagnose my foot pain--and treat it, so I'm still treating an injury that occurred six months back. Is it a neuroma or a stress fracture? Turns out, it's neither! Dr. Chin was the ONLY podiatrist who suggested I had a different injury (something in my joint that caused inflammation, in case you're curious..). He's very proactive about treatment, and really wants his patients to feel better. He's also the only podiatrist I've felt this way about--all the other ones I saw were 10-15 min visits, and they'd tell me to "give it a few weeks." Seriously? I guess with podiatrists, 6th time's the charm. If you want to know which other podiatrists to stay away from (at least from my experience, PM me--or just see Dr. Chin. Spare yourself months of agony! Note: Dr. Chin also has an office location in Skokie right off the Edens at Old Orchard, which is convenient if you happen to live/work in a northern suburb. My one slight complaint about the downtown location is that they'll validate your parking for a nearby parking garage on Randolph and State, but it's still $11. I feel like they should be able to work out a deal with that parking garage for free parking, considering AMIC in the same building on Wabash offers free parking in that garage. But if you're not driving (which I wouldn't if I didn't have to), it's obviously convenient to el/bus/walking. read more

I received a call from the doctor a few days after posting my review. He saw that I wasn't happy with my visit and wanted me make things right. He offered to see me again free of charge. I declined to see him again since I didn't think I needed it. I didn't have any issues with his diagnosis. He explained to me reasons why some of the staff wasn't friendly and he said that he would counsel them. Also, as for the shorts issue, the option to put them on should have been given to me. But, then again, I didn't fill out my paperwork ahead of time so that's my fault for not doing that. I appreciate the phone call and desire to make things right. read more

Feet. Nearly everyone's got 'em. So where do you turn when they aren't feeling so footloose and fancy free? I go to Dr. Chin at Windy City Foot and Ankle Physicians. Dr. Chin is amazing. He really takes time to listen to his patients and get to the bottom (er, sole?) of their ailments. He takes a very holistic approach to foot problems. It could be an out-of-whack hip or knee that is causing your foot pain. If this is the case, you can be sure that Dr. Chin will refer you to someone who can help, whether it's an orthopedist or a physical therapist. He seems to have very good relationships with his colleagues, and is familiar with the network of physicians and physical therapists in the Chicago-area. Not a runner? Don't be intimidated. Though the website and office are runner-themed, Dr. Chin does not discriminate. He just wants you to feel your best. This is reflected time and time again in his bedside (footside?) manner. In addition to asking his own questions, he takes the time to answer any questions you may have. He is very approachable, patient and thorough. Twice when I have visited Dr. Chin there have been people shadowing him. It's very encouraging to see someone who is good at what they do helping others to improve their skills. 2 hour appointment. 2 hours. Arrived 15mins early for my appt. and was then first told about paperwork to fill out (6 pages worth!). Receptionist looked at me like I should have know there was paperwork to fill out online but was never told on my initial call to schedule nor was I told the day of when I had to call to confirm my appt. as I never received a confirmation/ reminder call from them. Wasn't taken back to a room until 15mins after my appt. time and then had to wait almost another 20mins for Dr. Chin to come in. Was with me for about 20 mins and stepped out and ordered an ultrasound. 35 mins later he finally came back to do the ultrasound. Unfortunate thing is I didn't really leave with a diagnosis for my pain even after asking questions in different ways. After being there for 2hrs I was just ready to leave. read more

This has been the worst experience I've had with seeking medical care. I sought treatment here for a severe case of plantar fasciitis. Having recently relocated from California, I was unfamiliar with physicians in Chicago and found myself at the Running Institute and I am no better off now than when I walked in their door several months ago. Per Dr. Reilly, I went to Athletico for PT which was unsuccessful in treating my injury as the therapist passed me off to a student for 90% of the session which actually made my injury worse. Dr. Reilly then suggested I try three sessions of the EPAT treatment which didn't work. At all. There went $450. On the final EPAT session - in September - I ordered my orthotic and wouldn't you know, I still don't have the pair. Dr. Reilly received the initial orthotics but they weren't correct and she said I could try them even though they weren't what she ordered for me. Um, no. I'm not going to take a $450 investment to fix an injury if it's not 100% right. She sent them back and it's been almost THREE MONTHS and I still don't have them. This office staff has zero customer service skills. The front staff - and the aide/assistant who takes you back and goes over your history - are incredibly unfriendly (and he is borderline cold). I have had to call every other week for an update on my orthotic and I'm told I'll get a call back for an update but I never do. In fact, when I expressed my growing frustration with Dr. Reilly about the lack of follow-through about two weeks ago, she said she'd have someone call when the orthotics arrive which 'should be any day.' I called today and apparently "they've been in." Not a call from anyone as Dr. Reilly promised. So after nearly spending a $1,000 at this place, I'm exactly where I was in terms of pain when I walked into their office this summer. Oh, and they don't answer their phones after 4:30pm. Spare yourself and skip this place. read more

First off, I NEVER thought I would be running again...and I AM! Thanks to Dr Chin. I had an old running injury that was about 14 years old, that caused me great pain and created new problems over the years. It was a simple pinched nerve that was ruining my life and keeping me from what I love doing...running! When my sciatica finally went down to my feet and was giving me drop foot, it was time to fix this(mostly because strangers would ask me if I was ok!? lol). So, I went to Athletico to get it looked at. They referred me to Dr Chin. Now I have done physical therapy for this old running injury at least once every two years, with very little pay out and lots of $$. But, with Dr Chin's treatment and suggestion of Active Release Technique (with Amy at Athletico), it ABSOLUTELY worked!!! It is not a comfortable treatment, but, soooooooo effective. I would do it again if I had to. Then he referred me to a nuerologist to finish the PT on my back(that I should have gotten fixed years ago! I just didn't know how to go about it). I am back to running and ran a 5k in November and now training for a 10K in March and half marathon in the summer! I never EVER thought I would be doing this!! And I run with a stupid grin on my face every time! I absolutely recommend Dr Chin and the Running Institute!! I suffered a right quad injury on the training for the Chicago and NYC marathons last year, and went into The Running Institute based on rave reviews on social media. Met with Dr. Natarajan's PA for 15 minutes and probably spent less than 5 minutes with the doctor himself. Was written a script for PT and off to PT I went. I did ask for imagery and they didn't feel it was necessary. Didn't get any warm and fuzzy feeling from anyone in the office. Everyone acted like they'd rather be somewhere else. After 4 months, I finally heard back from their office, wanting me to come in for a follow-up. I was incredibly annoyed by this because there wasn't any earlier concern or contact. The front desk couldn't give me an idea as to what my initial bill would be, nor would they fathom a guess. Nor could they tell me what a video gait analysis would cost. Overall I was not impressed on any level. You'd think that a place called the Running Institute would actually listen to runners and help them instead of just shoot out a referral. There's no value-add. If you've been hurt while running, you're better off seeing your own doctor who can refer you to a competent and caring sports medicine doctor. read more

I recently went in to The Running Institute with a foot injury-they got me in quickly and Dr. Reilly was wonderful. She was very thorough, understanding and genuinely had interest in my particular situation. I have nothing bad to say about the care I received or the staff as they were all very friendly. My disappointment came when I needed a doctors note stating I was unable to participate in a marathon [due to the injury I was seeing them for]. They complied with the request but charged me $20 for a signature. It required no time from the practice and I was currently under their care. They claim it is a new practice policy-one I've never heard of. My frustration had nothing to do with the price but more so the principle or it all. I was an active and paying patient-the least they can do is sign a sheet of paperwork saying I was injured and under their care. Again the staff and doctors are great, but this is a practice policy that needs to be rethought in my opinon. read more

While she's polite and seems to really know her technical terms, I have a few areas for improvement. I'm not a doctor, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so it would be helpful to put things into layman's terms when explaining the mechanism of the injury or defect. In addition, I felt that while I was able to articulate my issues well, I don't know if anyone really heard me on the constraints I had around treatment. This ain't my first rodeo--I've been through injuries and physical therapy before--so I know my limitations and the outside demands placed on me. I shouldn't be in more, acute pain when I leave than when I walked in. So bottom line, I felt the doc had a good idea of what was wrong, but could have listened better on how we'd get to the finish line with treatment. read more

After experiencing a great deal of pain in my foot that would not go away after one night, I made an appointment to see Dr. Reilly. After going through broken bones in the past, saying I was worried I did it again was an understatement! I found Dr. Reilly to be extremely helpful and professional, and she was able to provide me with a very fast diagnosis. The staff was very friendly, it was a short wait to see Dr. Reilly, and best of all she was very understanding. In visiting other Doctor offices in the past, I felt at times that I was just a "number" and I was being pushed out the door right after my appointment in order to make room for the next patient...not the case here, people. Dr. Reilly took the time to explain to me the exact condition I had, was very empathetic of my injury, and we talked about treatment options which then turned out to be very successful. If your are experiencing any pain in your foot/ankle, get checked out immediately; do not wait to see if it gets better! I highly recommend going to The Running Institute. This review is for Dr. Chin and the Running Institute, located on Wabash in downtown Chicago. It's a very good practice offering some of the very best sport podiatry, but beware of high costs and billing mishaps. GOOD: Dr. Chin is the very best foot doctor I've ever worked with, and the entire practice is geared towards runners. From analysis to examination to orthotic fitting, this is the place to go. I'm pleased with my orthotics (I've purchased three pairs here over the years) and the service I received. My mom (not a runner) also saw Dr. Chin to address her painful foot issues, and was able to enjoy her European walking tour without further issue. BAD: The top flight service you get here comes with a hefty price tag. And watch your medical bills carefully: I was billed for *every* visit, including just to pick up my orthotics. All of my billing issues were eventually worked out, but not without a good deal of hassle. If you don't have patience and really good insurance, you should be careful about coming here unless you have money to spend. PRO TIP: My wife and I have purchased orthotic inserts with and without insurance. If you don't have good insurance, expect to pay up to $600 a pair. If you are self-pay, consider other options. read more

With my many foot ailments that have come to light over the past year and a half, I have been very grateful to find a doctor that works with people who run. Dr. Chin films you running on a treadmill (like they do at Fleet Feet) and you receive a doctor's diagnosis of how you run and, in my case, what needs to be fixed. The office has hours that are conducive for those of us that work during the day (including before and after work appointment times). I changed podiatrists last year to Dr. Chin and I am so glad that I did. He seems to genuinely care about his patients and he wants to see you succeed and run without pain (relatively speaking of course). He even has a list of shoes recommended for certain types of foot problems (similar to Fleet Feet but better)! If you are a runner or an athlete and need to go to a podiatrist, I would highly recommend Dr. Chin. I have recommended some of my friends and co-workers to him and all have had similar great experiences. read more

Dr. Reilly thoroughly explained what was happening with my foot and suggested an orthotic. When the orthotic arrived, it was shaped completely differently from what she described. In addition, I was charged a second co-pay to have the orthotics cut to fit into my shoes. And then they suggested another follow up appointment (with another co-pay) to make sure the orthotics were working properly. At the dentist there's no additional co-pay to make sure the crown fits properly. At the eye doctor there's no additional co-pay to make sure the glasses fit properly. I felt nickle-and-dimed to death, besides that the orhtotics are not what was described to me. Going elsewhere next time. Not impressed. read more

I came here the other day to have a pain in my root foot looked into. The pain in my heel has been such that I have not been able to run for distance in a very long time. My primary care physician recommended the Running Institute and I immediately made an appointment. First off, getting an appointment was very easy and they were able to see me within a few days which was great. I came in at my appointed time, the staff was very friendly, and the wait was less than 5 minutes (after filling out all the paperwork) before I was seated in an exam room. A very nice assistant asked me a little more about the reason I was in. And once she left, not 2 minutes later, the doctor came in. I'm used to often waiting 20 minutes or more in an exam room before the doctor comes in so this was a very welcome surprise. Dr. Chin examined my foot. Asked me some questions. And then proceeded to give me a detailed assessment of what he thought were the issues causing my foot pain. He took a good amount of time explaining and showing me the issues and creating a plan for the next steps on how to get everything better. It definitely appears that I came to the right place and am seeing the right doctor. read more

Dr. Chin is absolutely fantastic. I saw him 5+ years ago with foot problems and then went to see him again just recently. He identified the problem right away and was able to adjust my foot (which was jammed) on the spot. He also checked to see that I had the right running shoes and gave me a program to get my running back on track. Just a few tips to ensure a smooth visit: There is construction around his office and traffic and parking were a mess. Keep that in mind if you are driving / taking a cab/uber. They build in 10 - 15 wait time from when your appointment time, so if you are running a little late, that's ok. I was seen 15 minutes after I checked in, which isn't too bad as far as waiting standards go. read more

Dr Chin was friendly and seemed knowledgeable, but despite my having ordered a pair of orthodics based off my molds every year since the molds were made, the office allowed the lab to destroy them, and then expected me to come pay for a new mold-creation appointment because of their own failure to keep track of my molds. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Chin, Dr. Ardell and The Running Institute team and their great care the last few months. 9 weeks ago I was diagnosed with a cuboid stress fracture after Dr. Chin was able to quickly get me in for an appointment and take an X-Ray. Using EPAT treatments to promote bone healing I was out of my walking boot in 4 weeks! They have been extremely personal in their care, giving me guidance to return to running and taking time to discuss nutrition and lifestyle changes I can make to heal and stay healthy. I am a big fan of Dr. Chin and his staff. As others have mentioned, he is knowledgable, friendly, and listens. Especially during COVID, running is my primary stress reliever and very significant to me. Dr, Chin has allowed me to continue doing what I love, as well as providing some tools and suggestions to keep me on the path. I found his staff to be accommodating. Since my flat feet are pretty pronounced, my orthotics are pretty aggressive, so I ordered a second pair so I could occasionally wear casual shoes. read more
