Ive had afternoon tea in a handful of countries as well as 5-6 here in the states. These tea sandwiches were my absolute favorite. I enjoyed every single one and despite others reporting not being able to finish them--I couldn't resist and inhaled them all. Their liverwurst was surprisingly delicate and savory. They are all freshly prepared and nothing beats having four caviar blinis to start! It was nice comparing the different types of caviar ending with the coveted ostera. The glass of champagne was a nice touch especially after my cavitini, which is a perfectly shaken vodka martini with a caviar bite. The tea was delicious and they thoughtfully returned to freshen up the pot to keep it warm throughout our meal. My date played it safe and ordered their crispy chicken sandwich with fries. All of which was good although I had hoped he would pick a more Russian dish. The scones and dessert tray came second and I forgot to take a photo. It was just the right amount of scones and they bring out the clotted cream without needing to ask. The decor inside is lovely and I enjoyed the red throughout the venue. We came during a quiet brunch time and I was surprised it was not more full. I had been wanting to visit The Russian Tea Room for quite some time, so after Masquerade, when we found ourselves hungry and nearby, it felt like the perfect opportunity to finally experience it. We arrived around 4:15pm on a Friday, and the restaurant was quite empty. Knowing that afternoon tea service ended at 4:30pm, we asked if we were still able to order it. The first person we spoke with said no, but shortly after, another staff member came out and said they could absolutely accommodate us. We were excited and grateful that they were willing to make it work. The space itself is beautiful and has a charm all its own. I loved the little details, including how they pulled the table out for us to sit down rather than making us awkwardly squeeze into the booth. It felt like the kind of classic New York experience I had been hoping for. Unfortunately, this is where the experience took a turn. We confirmed again that afternoon tea was still available and were told they would be happy to serve it. When the tray arrived, I was honestly confused and disappointed by the presentation and the lack of items included. I don't know if we were served what was left at the end of tea service, but it was very different from what I had envisioned for a place with such a long-standing reputation. I asked to speak with a manager, and he apologized and offered to take the tea service away. I appreciated the apology, but I was surprised to still be charged for a champagne that I never touched. I even told him I was happy to pay for the tea, but instead I was charged $25 for a house champagne that did not look appealing and was part of the disappointing experience. I really wanted to love The Russian Tea Room. The atmosphere is beautiful, and there is clearly a lot of history and character here. Unfortunately, the afternoon tea experience did not match the expectations that come with the name, and the handling afterward left me feeling even more disappointed. It's like walking into a grand parlor with red, plush furniture and artwork adorning the walls. I did the theatre pre-fixe, which is a three course meal that consisted of a buckwheat blini with caviar, beef stroganoff, and medivik, a Ukrainian honey cake. The latter was the star of the show. We celebrated our 12th anniversary at the RTR. I had always wanted to enter its historic space and it did not disappoint. From the moment we entered the door the experience was first class which is extremely rare these days. Every person with whom we interacted was professional, warm and kind, again, extremely rare to find these days in the service industry. My husband had the afternoon tea which he adored. The scones are far better than the ones served at afternoon tea at The Plaza. The tea itself was delicious as were the sweet and savory treats. I had the mushroom Stroganoff which was divine. This is the first time in a long time I enjoyed every element of the experience. I would say the food far surpassed what we had expected in terms of quality, the presentation was superb and our server Carolina was excellent in every way. The service was extremely lackluster, the way our table was situated my seat was in the way of everybody walking by, the food was below average, and overall, I was extremely disappointed with the experience. The key low moments for me were - we waited 25 minutes to have someone acknowledge our table. Then they told us that our waiter was unavailable and that somebody would come back. There was no flavor of horseradish in it. - my friend ordered an aviation cocktail and said to them, if you don't have all of the ingredients, please let me know, and I will order something else. instead of coming back and letting us know that they didn't have the ingredients for that, they created something else and tried to pass it off. Once she called them out on it, they admitted they didn't have the main ingredient. - my food which was very pricey, which I don't mind when it's worth it, but had very little flavor and very little substance to it. I got the potato dumplings. Which by the way, the waiter tried to talk me out of and kept recommending red meat dishes, and I politely shared I can't eat red meat many times. - for some reason, they had our table with the chairs in the walkway. I eventually ended up getting up and moving our table in my chair because it was really a nuisance. We waited 20 minutes and had to flag someone down to find out waiter so we could at least be given water. The waiter claimed that the reason our orders were coming out slow, even the caviar for one of our drinks, was that the only service station that wasn't overrun was the dessert station. The food is overpriced and the main draw is for the ambience and decor which is elaborate and decadent. The second floor has a tree with lit colored glass eggs and a spinning bear aquarium reminiscent of a Russian dancing bear. I only ordered the honey cake because we had already eaten and were visiting friends. It was moist and delicious, but certainly not enough to make me return. Others in my group spent $33 for a handful of Pelmeni dumpling in a sauce. Although they were deemed delicious, seems overly expensive for beef, for sour cream, mushrooms, and peas. DO NOT COME HERE - metal found in food. I took some scones home, and upon eating some of the leftovers I noticed a thin piece of metal embedded in the scone. I was horrified and immediately stopped eating but I don't know if I had already ingested a piece of the metal already. Other notes on the dining experience: I came here with a large group after work, and was excited for my first tea experience. The ambiance was nice, and our main server was extremely helpful. The tea experience was fine, and there were some standout sandwiches (smoked salmon and pate), but inconsistencies in the quality of the bread, as some were quite dry and stale while others were fluffy. The dessert course also had some hits and misses, my favorite being the scones before this incident. We were offered rolls and I choose both the sourdough and the pumpernickel and both were soft and tasty. We decided to get a couple of dishes and share them. We ordered both the Pelmeni and the Beef Stroganoff. There was also Cabernet ordered along with Anastasia, which is an Earl Grey tea, with lemon and orange blossom. It also came with a small dish of cherry gel to add sweetness to the tea. The Pelmeni were small little dumplings with beef, a creamy sauce and peas. It was so good and savory. And then the Stroganoff...reminders of my bubby and dad's Stroganoff. Made with braised short ribs, cooked to tender perfection. The noodles were cooked well and the creamy sauce is set off with the addition of some black truffle. A dish that memories are made of! We were full after this savory and heavy meal so no dessert this time around. Lets talk about costs...yes, it is a bit pricey and for three of us with two glasses of wine came to $150. To be expected, not only because you are in NY but also because the RTR prides itself on excellent quality and excellent service. Well worth the visit! My wife and I came to this iconic establishment to celebrate a special occasion. We made reservations and chose to have lunch here. As soon as we went in the restaurant, we were warmly welcomed by the very friendly staff. I specially like their faberge eggs and antique samovars. What's running through my mind is this is really a very elegant and classy restaurant (which is what I really expected). The atmosphere gives a sense of Russian luxury setting. We were led to one of their many red colored dining booth, the table was covered with a white cloth, with formal table setting. The staff had to slide the table out for us to seat in and out of the booth, which they do with all costumers who gets a booth, a plus for excellent service. We ordered our drinks, I chose a zero proof Russian fizz and my wife got a black tea. For appetizer we chose pirozki, a mini bread-wrapped chicken, lamb and beef with a flavored cream cheese for dip. As our entree, I opted for the Cotelette a la Kiev and my wife chose their beef stroganoff. The drinks were good, the pirozki was amazing, the flavor seems to be bursting in the mouth the more you chew on it. Beef stroganoff was tender and moist , has rich bold flavors of the creamy mushroom sauce. The moderate sized cube of beef on top of pasta that was cooked al dente was savory. The beef stroganoff was amazing. The Cotelette a la Kiev is a classic dish consisting of a breaded chicken breast stuffed with herb butter, served with mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and a mushroom sauce. It is crispy and golden on the outside, with a flavorful, buttery, and garlicky filling that melts when you cut into it, it is palatable. Staff service was top notch, waiter is attentive and very knowledgeable of their menu. Food service was exceptional, slow, well-paced where costumers were given the chance to fully enjoy the meal and the ambiance. As expected, this is a high-priced dining experience which I may say is just fair considering the high quality of food, fantastic service and magical ambiance. It is all worth coming to this joint. You can't expect this place to be all glitz and glamor with Michelin star service for the price points, but as you enter and dine, you feel the weight of the restaurant's years..it's an institution, and you respect it as such. I had a plethora of possible dining options for the 2 weeks in the city,, especially for Restaurant Week lunches, and I decided on TRTR because of the unique menu, and convenient location close to so many iconic places. So glad I did! The interior is absolutely gorgeous. Not very bustling with patrons, however. The hostess was kind and sweet, and so were the wait staff (although they seemed to be a little green, but eager). Most reviewed seemed to say lunch service wasn't great but dinner was on point, so we booked dinner at 8pm on a Saturday evening. The inside decor is so gaudy and so Russian, but very classic and cool to see the gold framed paintings and garish reds abound. The service was good, I thought everyone we interacted with was very friendly. However, it wasn't fast. We ordered a chicken Kyiv, a salad, and an onion soup and it took probably 20 or 30 minutes. And when it came...it was not great. My soup was, to be fair, a solid onion soup with some good bread in it. But it didn't feel freshly made, and our suspicions were confirmed with the friend chicken. My husband said it tasted and felt like it was pre-made and then quickly fried to complete his order. We came to this place for several reasons. I'm probably 50+ years late to this place as a hot NY destination. The room is no longer vibrant and full of big names as it was back then. But I can still imagine Dustin Hoffman acting up as Tootsie with Sydney Pollack in the room. The rich tradition, the sadness (if you are aware of when it opened and who the first owners were)--perhaps that explains why Baryshnikov visited this restaurant after his run-out. We had some conversations about something similar with the manager and the waiter. This was more of a destination to visit rather than a restaurant experience. The food is okay; I'm not overly concerned about it. Attached is a picture of Chicken Kiev. The soup served was just fine, along with some vegetables. It is indeed slightly overpriced, but I expected that. I asked and was told that there is no more live music available. read more
