5 stars isn't nearly enough! Ari is a GODDESS. An absolute master at her craft. The salon itself is gorgeous, upbeat, and everyone there is so friendly. I used to work at a salon and have had everything done to my hair - from extensions to chopping it all off; level 1 black all the way up to bleached blonde. At the risk of sounding high-maintenance... I have been trying for literally years - across multiple states and different stylists - to achieve a cool blonde with dark shadow root. It always came out a little too warm for my taste, and never quite had the contrast I was hoping for... Until ARI! She is so sweet, professional, and a master colorist. She was able to get the closest I've EVER gotten in literally ONE session. I'll never see anyone else!! read more

This experience was genuinely heartbreaking for me. My fiancé surprised me with a haircut at The Salon by Robert Lupo because I'd been having a really rough week. We had planned a nice date afterward, and this was supposed to make me feel good. Instead, I left crying. Melissa had apparently double-booked appointments. After washing my hair, she left me sitting there with a towel on my head while she worked on another client. Throughout the haircut, she repeatedly put her hands against my face, smudging and ruining the makeup I'd spent time putting on for our evening out. It was uncomfortable and unnecessary, and by the end of the appointment my makeup was a mess. Then I saw my haircut. I specifically asked for face-framing layers and bangs. What I walked out with looked absolutely nothing like what I requested. The cut is choppy, awkward, and honestly makes me look like Joe Dirt. I was so devastated that I couldn't get out of the salon fast enough. I cried the entire ride home. My fiancé and I ended up canceling our night out because I was so embarrassed. I can't even bring myself to post photos of the haircut because that's how humiliating it is. To make matters worse, I was encouraged to purchase a hair product to "keep my hair shiny." Before buying it, I noticed the bottle appeared to be cracked. When I pointed it out and said I didn't want it, both Melissa and the owner insisted it was just the label and that the bottle wasn't actually cracked. When my fiancé picked me up, he examined it, ran his fingernail over it, and confirmed it was in fact cracked all the way around. What was supposed to be a relaxing, confidence-boosting experience after a difficult week left me feeling worse than when I walked in. A few points to make in regards to the owner's response: 1. My name is Xiomy. Not Xiong. You can at least pretend to be respectful and respond by taking the time to write out my name correctly. Yes, my name is unique but most people would have the decency to at least try to say or write their name correctly. 2. You said you'd provide a partial refund or store credit. And you said I could follow up to confirm one of these two options over email, and that's why you gave me your email address. When you say "at no time did I commit to a refund" - that's a flat out lie. I don't know why you would lie about this, to try to save face or make yourself feel better? And in doing so, you are implying that I'm a liar, which I'm not. Oh well, it's your word against mine. 3. I've had hair extensions several times and haven't had issues before. Not until this salon. What does that tell you? And the extensionist didn't tell me to come in for upkeep. I also don't appreciate you implying that I didn't take care of my extensions while I had them in. I literally flew from LA to get cut and color from Robert. I used to be a hairdresser and I've worked with high end stylists from Turkey, Israel, Italy and France. I could have gone to any one of them for these services but Robert's attention to detail, creativity and execution is unmatched. I shortened an appointment with a world renowned tattoo artist earlier in the day to make it to my appt with him and let me tell you I'm absolutely thrilled with my hair. I get compliments from men, women and even middle school girls (judgiest people on earth) on my cut at least twice a week. He is worth his weight in gold. Also Khalila is a total badass and I'll do my next cut with her because of the vision I have. Robert is like going to a Versace show and Khalia is like Prada. Also love the L'Oréal professional line and would highly recommend you purchase what they recommend to maintain your style. The vibe is totally authentic and the experience is fulfilling. Also I have to say if you want a European level stylist but without being snubbed by European attitude this is the place to go. I was having one of those moments where I felt like I needed to get my hair cut RIGHT NOW. You know what I mean. My regular stylist is in Rockridge and extremely hard to get an appointment with. I have had my eye on this salon for a while and decided to take a chance. Took the first available opening - so glad I did. In most salons, the stylists are very independent of each other. Maybe even competitive. This place operates like a true team. Donta was my stylist, he's delightful. He has many years of experience with ethnic hair but other hair not as much. Because I wanted something a little transformative and complicated, he checked in with Ari for input and they literally transformed my look and gave me exactly what I was asking for. I could not be happier. Additionally, I wanted some advice about my teenage daughter's hair color, and Melissa, Donta, and Ari spent a good hour on a full-on color consultation complete with strip tests. We're heading over next weekend for that appointment with Donta. I was worried about my kid bleaching on top of color but I am convinced this team knows what they're doing and will keep her hair as healthy as possible given the request! Everyone was nice, communicative, friendly. At no point did I feel like I wasn't cool enough or gorgeous enough to be there. Some high-end salons give you that vibe. Not here. Last but not least, the salon is tasteful and contemporary. Prices may be a little high for Alameda but lower than what you would see in San Francisco. I think they're more than fair. Enrique has cut my hair for the last couple years. For the most part I have been satisfied but he has always been one of those hair dressers that does a combination of what you ask for and what he thinks is best. The last two cuts have been extremely disappointing. A couple months ago I asked to cut my previously long hair to shoulder length. He cut it a few inches below my shoulders. I just came in and asked for just above my shoulders. The pic is what I got. When I sent him a text expressing my dissatisfaction he literally laughed. Initially I reached out by sending a message on Yelp after searching through many salons for someone who had consistent positive reviews, which is very hard to find. I got a response within an hour or so on Yelp and had an appointment for the next day. I was so surprised that Robert himself was available to cut my hair so quickly. I eagerly took the appointment. When I walked in the front door, I got a sense of cleanliness, friendliness and professionalism. Everyone made me feel welcome and comfortable. Going in, I was very nervous for multiple reasons. I love visiting The Salon & being styled by Ari! I knew my first "covid-cut" would be here (and I was getting desperate!!!), but I was nervous to visit a salon after so much careful quarantining. My fears were immediately assuaged by the diligent & thoughtful protocols Robert & team have enacted. I was completely comfortable the whole time I was in the salon & left feeling safe, pampered & beautiful. Why I love this salon: 1. The vibe is on point- the space is airy & light, clean & comfortable. I would choose to lounge in this space, even without receiving a service. 2. Robert is a perfectionist & everything he does is of the highest care & quality! Every moment of your experience in the salon is considered without being fussy- from the space layout, to the products used, to the equipment (sinks, dryers, etc), down to little details like beverages offered (sensibly- not during covid.) Start to finish, every visit to the salon is an utter delight. 3. The location is great, parking is abundant & AC transit accessible. Why I love Ari as a stylist: Ari is extremely skilled, and has a great ability to integrate her broad experience with the desires of her clients. She is consistent, meticulous, and produces great results. 1. She gets me! I want to look good, but I am lazy!!! I need a low maintenance cut that looks great daily & can be styled up when the mood strikes me. Ari's consultation was easy and friendly, and she quickly understood what I wanted, and how it could be executed with my particular hair (texture, quantity, density, etc). 2. She is the best communicator! Ari sets impeccable expectations! We have all left salons feeling shocked or disappointed by our style. Ari won't let that happen. I am a challenging client. I say "I don't know what I want, can you just make me look good?" Ari can ask a few questions & then take charge and I leave happy with a perfect cut & color. or (presents inspo pic of some model who had a team of 12 styling her hair for 6 hours before the shoot), "I want this, but I don't want to have to style it" Ari can graciously & tactfully tell me no, I can't have Beyonce's look without a lot of styling effort, and even if I wanted to put in the effort, at home the result is unlikely to match my hope. I need to hear that! Then we discuss further, and I end up learning how to use a curling iron & feeling empowered, gorgeous & capable. 3. She is technically skilled! Ari is just good at hair! It feels like magic, the way she can understand how to sculpt your particular type of hair, but really it is her broad experience that she uses to carefully craft your style. She is masterful. Four times I try to book with the owners husband, who is a new father. J just had an amazing experience at The Salon by Robert Lupo! An experience that quite honestly, I had been dreading. After suffering through my "covid hair - don't care" phase of life, and the trauma of having my regular stylist move away, I found myself seven months between cut and color. I was certain that no one could blend the 2-3 inches of outgrowth, or master my complicated trim. (Tons of baby fine hair, that turns to curls the moment a mist comes my way.) Melissa not only accomplished that, but seemed to tolerate my vision of what I needed done. Most stylists encourage me to rock my curls. Something I only do on Sundays. This is non-negotiable.
