This past Saturday, I decided to treat myself for a self care experience, and went for a pedicure. Even though, I ran a few minutes late for my 315 appointment, it was well worth being there later. This was my first time back here, after many years, when I came pre pandemic for hair cuts, hilights; so I wasn't sure of what to expect. Hayley, one of the students was personable, friendly and a pleasure to have had doing my pedicure. The bonus to me, that I was unaware of was all services for Valentines day weekend were 1/2 price. I booked a microdermabrasion for next month with her. I can't wait. I also received a pedicure from Taylor. She gave a wonderful pedicure. My toes looked great. My only issue was when I booked the service it was supposed to be buy a service get a service for half price. I was told this promotion was for the month of June. When I checked out I was told they weren't doing that any more. They stopped it last week. The girl at the front desk called someone to see if it could be honored since that was the reason I booked the two services. She was told no. To me that is bad business. Recently went to treat myself to a facial after going through a pretty tough week and was super happy to be able to get an appointment next day. Had an advanced facial scheduled for 7 pm and my aesthetician was excellent. The other students on the other hand made the experience unbearable. Students were answering phone calls, showing each other videos and conversing at full volume making my relaxing treatment all but. The teacher had stated it was an issue after my service was over but if it wouldn't have affected the student I was working with, I would have walked out. I have had services at TSPA previously and it had been great but this experience has really made me think twice about wanting to return. About a month ago I decided to get highlights in my hair. It can get expensive depending on how much product is used, plus the labor of your colorist. My mom has been getting her hair cut and colored at this school for hairdressers and beauticians for a few years. Got to listen to your mother! She suggested I give them a try. Glad I did! The student who did my highlights was very careful in doing her work. She routinely consulted with her instructor. It takes a little more time get a cut or color here because of the need of the instructor to guide and speak with the student. But that's all good - you know they are going to do their best. Students need the public to practice on. I believe they need a definite number of practice hours before they graduate. The student I had will graduate in a few months. She has a job lined up at a private salon in the future. Very talented and sweet young lady. You can buy Redken hair products here. I love that high quality for my hair. One year after graduating TSPA. AVOID GOING HERE!!!!!! THEY ARE $$$ HUNGRY AND DONT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR COMPLAINTS! This academy has been dishonest on multiple occasions, including lying about firing an instructor. They mislead students and fail to uphold their promises. I would not recommend trusting them with your education or money. If your looking for a supportive professional teacher who actually wants you to succeed and organized learning environment in the manicurist program I would STAY FAR AWAY from TSPA. As a 2024 graduate of the "Professional" Nail Program, my experience was profoundly disappointing. While there were a few positive moments, the overall journey was plagued by disorganization, inadequate resources, and a deeply unprofessional teaching environment. My teacher has expressed a day before i was supposed to graduate on our final one on one that she was ONLY worried about me passing my practical exam this was the first time she ever communicated her doubts in me and it would of been extremely nice for her to tell me earlier and i could of gotten an answer as to why shes worried i wont pass and advice, instead i got no explanation, only anxiety about graduation due to the fact she waited until the last possible moment which felt extremely insulting. on multiple occasions, my teacher made derogatory remarks and public criticisms, such as calling me out for my posture in front of the entire class. I encountered repeated instances of unprofessional behavior, and public comments that were made to embarrass or humiliate her students. I have also learned that she discussed my academic performance, grades, and personal circumstances with another student outside of any professional or academic context. This is an unequivocal violation of my rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which strictly prohibits the unauthorized disclosure of a student's educational records and personal information. my teacher also couldn't wait for one of the most important people in my entire life to arrive at my graduation: the love of my life. Instead prioritizing a personal errand of bringing her mom grocery shopping instead and rushing me through my important moment ive worked hard for. As a result, I had to go through my graduation without the person I most wanted there. It was devastating. The fact that she chose her own schedule over such an important moment for me felt incredibly disrespectful and completely ruined my celebration. teacher told us conflicting information about state boards, stating one thing for months (such as the bag we bring to the boards MUST BE all black with no writing) and then on the last week of school stating the complete opposite stating we CAN bring a colored bag it just cant have writing, which was confusing for myself and other students. the teacher would repeatedly ask my age after I asked basic questions about the academy, which made me uncomfortable. One time, when I asked about when financial aid left the building (which I literally wouldn't even know the answer to that question) she asked how old I was. It felt unnecessary and distracting, this pattern of focusing on personal details instead of simply answering my questions makes me feel uncomfortable. This could be viewed as age discrimination if i wanted to go that far. In terms of her teaching, there were numerous instances where she failed to provide adequate clear, correct, instruction or support, leaving students to teach each other. This lack of guidance and clarity in her teaching methods was detrimental to my ability to succeed in the program. Her failure to fulfill her duties as an instructor reflects a serious disregard for her responsibility to provide a fair and supportive education for all students. OVERALL: the high tuition fees aren't fully justified by the quality of education, resources, and job placement assistance provided. read more

My experience with the Salon Professional was outstanding...almost. Rita Argo was my student stylist and I cannot say enough about her. She was friendly yet professional. Rita discussed what she was going to do before she started cutting. I really appreciated her knowledge before she started. Her instructor Tina also listened to the plan which was also very conforting. After all, Rita is a student and this was proof she was ready to do her craft. Miss Tina was also interacting with me. I appreciated that she reconized me and did not behave like I wasn't in the room. I made another appointment with Rita and I am courious to see her grow in her field. Now, for the negative. I almost didn't make an appointment. The girl answering the phone was rude. She had a conversation with someone else while I waited to continue my conversation with her. I thought she was a student and the phone was part of the training. When I found out she was an employee I was shocked! You actually pay her to chase away customers! I know you can do better then her to represent your establishment. She was my first contact with company and almost my last. This place is the most disorganized and unprofessional establishment I may have ever received a service in. First I must say, the students are GREAT and I left INCREDIBLY happy with the work that my stylist did on my hair. However, when I came in, the student quoted me $29 for my color touch up and told me that it includes 2 free ounces of color. The teacher came over, they went over exactly what the student was going to do, the teacher CIRCLED THE $29 PRICE, signed off, had me sign the paperwork with the $29 price point on it, then told the student to go ahead. The student ended up using 0.5 oz of four different colors (0.5 x 4 = 2 oz). AFTER the color has already been applied to my head and it's too late, some other teacher decides that they have to charge $17 dollars for each extra COLOR used, instead of pricing it by ounce, which is the pricing structure I signed off on. They also say that there is a $10 up charge that they forgot to mention because of the color line that was used. (This upcharge isn't on their pricing menu.) So the student comes back and tells me that the school is now going to charge me $90 instead of the $29 that they initially told me and had me sign off on and SHE'S upset and incredibly uncomfortable that they're now charging her client TRIPLE the price that they quoted me and had me consent to by signature. The student pulls over ANOTHER teacher to question the pricing, and this teacher is shocked. She tells us that, as long as she's worked for TSPA, color has been priced by the ounce and I should be paying the $29 plus the $10 color line fee - NOT $90. So their staff isn't on the same page about how their pricing structure works because management is disorganized and I, the client, have to eat that???? I run a business and, if we ever encountered a situation where there was miscommunication to a client, we'd take the loss because it's not the client's fault that we can't get our pricing menu down. THEN, when I go to check out, I ask the receptionist if I could please speak to somebody in charge as I am VERY confused about their pricing and not prepared to pay TRIPLE what I was told it would cost. She tells me that there are two people in charge currently on and that she would go get one for me. After waiting for about 15 minutes, she comes back with no manager and says that the manager told her the price is $90 so I have to pay $90. I reiterated to the receptionist that it's not her fault but, again, I as the client would like to speak to the manager. She goes to look for her again. After another 15 minutes waiting, she comes back with no manager and tells me, "this is the price, there was a miscommunication error, the only place we can go from here is forward." Management can't confront their own clients??? I'm so incredibly disappointed with my experience here. I feel bad for the students and staff that they have to take the brunt of the disorganization and unprofessionalism of management. I work in management and I couldn't ever imagine hiding in the back from an upset client. This place needs to get their shit together. read more

This place was excellent. My student Jordan went over everything she was doing, asked me what I was looking for, gave me suggestions, and we devised a plan for my hair. There were no high-pressure sales on products, but I appreciated all the information she shared. Her teacher was very professional and always checking back on us. She also made a point of thanking me for my patience and for coming there to support the students. All the students had smiles and seemed to enjoy what they were doing. After many years of coming here (my previous review was from 6 years ago so I'm a long-term client), I have to downgrade and I'm really sad to do it. I want to support students, but I've seen a few too many things occuring lately that make me not want to. Biggest issue: I am a loyal client who buys a lot of stuff-- they offer Gift cards, facial packages etc and I usually try to take full advantage of those. Well, apparently their front of the house staff charged me wrong for a facial package (under charged) and then like 3 months after I purchased it, I am getting phone calls about how they didn't charge me correctly and now owe them more money and this and that. OK whatever, just make it square and I'll move on. It's not worth arguing over these amounts of money, but I find it really unprofessional to call a client back *after* you initially charged them and to say "I didn't charge you enough, you owe this...". Front of the house needs to get that right at point of sale or you eat it. Second, I was there for a facial and there was some type of gas leak/smell. I was evacuated 2x durinig my facial there by making it a not relaxing experience. I was outside in the sun with facial chemical on my face--- the students were great! Even getting bottled water to help get the product off my face so no issues would arise. I received absolutely not offer of compensation for this... I guess I still got a facial? LOL Anyways, they were able to discount it a bit after some heavy pressure at the front of the house, but again, person there wasn't authorized to do anything. Fine again.. students want to support blah blah... I agree with a few others who have posted about issues related to educator turnover and student unhappiness--- It's palpable as a client and that doesn't make for a good experience for anyone. I'm really sad to say that my days of coming here are over after they figure out what's going on with my package and money left on my account. TSPA is fine place to go for salon services on the cheap. I have only ever been there for hair services, and below is the Need to Know: -Set aside plenty of time, especially if you are going for a color treatment. The instructors check the work of the students and will assist as well, which can take time. Careful and slow is how they go, as they are students there to learn. -Know exactly what you want and bring pictures, or be somewhat flexible about your expectations. Err on the simplistic side if you are just trying TSPA out for the first time until you get a feel for the school. For cuts on the basic side they are fine. I go in to get my head buzzed and my main flop trimmed. I have learned to be precise about what I ask for. -Unless you go in SUPER often you will likely have a different student each time. -They are mad cheap. For a cut and wash I pay $10. read more

I just called to make my Mother and I appts. (I live in Attica. Mother visiting from out of state.) I have been a faithful client for 5 years now. Enjoy the students and I tip at least $20-$25. We were going to have cuts, color, low lights and pedicure, and also buying products. First I was told I had to have a consult, on lowlights, and a possibility they won't be able they won't even get to doing them. I said "since when?", girl says for months now. Hmmm....I was in 2 months ago, they didn't do that. I'm so happy business their is doing well and that the students have enough clients to practice on. We will take our business elswhere. Came to the Salon Professional Academy to get a facial and support my bestie girlfriend Kristie S. while she's in Esthetics school here. Upon entering I signed in with the receptionist and Kristie was right there to greet me. I had to fill out paperwork with my information, skin type, and skin concerns. On the way back to the Spa area we walked by a huge Cosmetology area where every single chair was filled with clients getting new do's by the Cosmo students. The Spa area is a large room with curtains separating each spa treatment area. The set up kind of reminded me of a hospital ER..lol! The lighting was perfect, dim and very spa like. The noise however was not. Both clients and students were not using their "spa voices" which I felt was quite unprofessional being that only a curtain was separating you from the next client. Anyhoo..on to the best part! My facial was amazing! Kristie performed a thorough skin analysis on me and tailored my facial to meet my skin care needs. Dermalogica products are used for the facials. I was happy to know that they're cruelty free, certified vegan and clean! FIVE STARS for Kristie's vast knowledge, supreme professionalism, and excellent skills! At the end of your treatment you're given the opportunity to purchase products from the Dermalogica line that are recommended for you. The establishment is very clean and definitely are following covid guidelines. Today I booked with Donna Hopkins for a manicure and pedicure. First, she was very pleasant and provided stellar communication skills. This was the first pedicure that I ever got so I was a little apprehensive. Well my apprehensiveness immediately disappeared when I was called for my appointment. Not only did my nail tech make me feel comfortable, but she was speaking to me at each interval to let me know what she was doing. She also used an amazing lavender sage product for the mani and pedi which made my skin so soft and smooth. I was so pleased that I bought some product for home. The person who overseeing the students was also very pleasant and also made the atmosphere comfortable for the students to learn but also ensured they were doing everything they were suppose to. Multiple teachers have quit due to the unprofessionalism of the management and owners. They are unable to keep track of students paperwork, hours and over all training. They have completely ignored new Covid-19 protocols in an effort to continue to bring money in the door, often times putting as many as 20 students into a small space, with no social distancing practices. They have put students and clients at risk, not to mention financial hardships in several cases, with their carelessness. I booked an appointment for hair and makeup before I was having engagement photos taken. I was told that it would take "about an hour and a half" When I came in, I told the stylist what my time constraints were. When it was clear things were going to take longer, she enlisted the help of a fellow stylist and eventually her teacher as well. At one point, three people were working on me to make sure I was out on time. When all was said and done, I was out only five minutes later than I had hoped and looked and felt fantastic. Basically..... I was a victim of wishful thinking. I knew it was cheaper here than other places and in my mind was certain that no one would let me walk out looking bad. Man was I wrong. First of all, my appointment is at 5:45 - I walk in early and let everyone know I'm here. 6 people walk in after me and all 6 of them get addressed and taken care of (moved back to get started)... I just sit around for 20 minutes waiting but don't get annoyed yet because I'm excited for my new blonde summer highlights. Finally I get called back. I'm friendly and nice to this girl, after all I'm really trusting her. Basically she talks over what I want with her educator and I, we decide to go for a blonde baylage. She assures me it may not look exactly how I want it but she WILL NOT LET ME WALK OUT LOOKING LIKE AN IDIOT. Ha. After putting foil all over my entire head literally one inch away from the roots with BLEACH, I knew something was up. Finally this girl takes all the foil off and I'm shook because I'm literally platinum. We rinse it out blah blah and it's disgusting. I felt tears welling up. I could see the look on everyone's faces. "Oh, this is not good" was basically written on everyone's forehead. My hairdresser and some friend she has come over and assure me that "the toner will fix everything" We go through the whole toner thing blah blah. In the end my hair looks 2 shades lighter than before with a mix of caramel, gray and green. It's hideous. Unfortunately my friend can't fix it until next weekend so I'm really pissed that I'm out $70 and have ugly hair. Whatever. Hair can be fixed. Life isn't that bad. But do yourself a favor, don't come here to get your hair colored. read more

On principle, I paid what she requested and cancelled my other appointments for mani/pedi. I had a terrible experience here. Yes, I know this is a student service business. However, I am confident in saying my 10-year-old niece could have done a better manicure. And the supervisor's idea of "checking" her student's work was a quick glance over my pedicure and manicure. The polish application was so thick that even the manicurist kept smudging it as she polished other fingers. In addition, she was wearing chunky jewelry that nicked four of my nails, so she had to fix them. However, instead of doing them over, she just did a hodge-podge re-polish on the parts that were smudged, which led to an even thicker coat! Also, the students seem to each have a personal kit they use to conducts pedicures and manicures. I had no way to tell whether the little kit was ever sanitized between clients. Also, instead of using a cuticle trimmer, the student used tweezers! I don't know if the school teaches that method or if the student decided that on her own, but it was not good. My nails are oddly shaped (some round, some square, some no shape at all), and I had to remove the polish as soon as I got home because as I said before, it was completely smudged before I left, yet somehow the instructor OK'ed it. I would never go back to this place for any service at all. read more

A back facial is sheer bliss. For only $25, the ab fab Student Clinic at TSPA can go a long way in helping you feel, at least for an hour, like a billionaire. Check your troubles at the door. The regimen is similar to a regular facial: First, your back is gently but thoroughly cleansed. Then (ahhhh) a hot towel to remove the cleanser. Next is exfoliation (more hot towel). As this is a school, and these are students, albeit advanced ones, at this point your esthetician consults with her instructor to evaluate the condition of your skin, what type of mask is recommended, &c (like a regular facial). Anna, a lovely, very competent student, applied the mask and finished with a 'buttercream' lotion (more hot towels in between). She also gave me a terrific mini-back massage, which left me feeling like overcooked spaghetti (a good thing). I discovered this luscious treat about 10 years ago, and TSPA offers the best value for service and product. They only use Dermatologica brand products. Other salons in the area charge ~$65 up for a back facial. If you're just curious, or hard-core, try TSPA for a back facial. Gents, don't be shy. You're welcome here. Oh, wait! I almost left out the best part. After my back facial was complete, Anna flipped me over like a flounder and gave me an incredible FACE facial. The first time I came here was on a whim, and I decided to just cut off 14 inches of my long locks! I will tell you I missed my hair day after day until it grew back to a comfortable length. The girl who cut my hair at the time was so nice and did exactly what I wanted plus Cleopatra bangs, which I loved! Now that my hair has grown back, I prefer going to someone very experienced as my hair texture is unique and requires more attention. The other few visits here I colored my hair, black, something easy. I'd rather come here for that and pay less than other salons for the same exact service. I am not sure I would come for more complex coloring services since they are students and still learning, but otherwise they do a great job with my black dye and it's refreshed and I walk out happy. Waxing is great here because they are so detailed and get every small hair out, that means even if they have to use tweezers! I've also had a regular facial and a back facial here, nothing special. I am used to Hungarian facials so I guess my review on this specifically may be biased to someone who hasn't experienced one of those. The back facial is enjoyable though. Now for the cons: The GEL mani is the worst I have ever had. I usually do my gel manicures at home and it lasts about 10 days before any chipping begins but I was lazy and wanted someone to do it for me. My manicure here was completely peeled off all 10 fingers within 24 hours of receiving the manicure, YIKES! I would not come back for a manicure here. I've been going here for years. I absolutely LOVE it. Microdermabrasion is super-expensive, but sooooo worth getting (and an absolute requirement for an aspiring cougar like myself). I can get it here for HALF of what you'd normally pay at a salon. The students go out of their way to make this a true spa-like experience. And the extra perks (subsequent facial, extraction, neck/shoulder massage, etc.) make it even more incredible that I can get all this done for less than $60. I've only taken advantage of the skincare services here, but I can't praise this place enough for the money. Sometimes they even run buy one, get one half off specials, so be sure to check the website before you go and see if a friend wants to tag along. It's well worth it! read more

The person doing my hair was absolutely amazing and so patient however Miss Tina or whatever is a rude person and should not be teaching there. After she told the student to cover my whole head in bleach half way through she changed her mind and told the student to use foils. I walked away spending close to 200 dollars on my hair because of the amount of remixes. She should get fired she's unprofessional and rude. If I wanted to spend that much I'd go to a high end salon. read more
