The name of The Saltbox Smokehouse in Sodus might lead some history buffs to assume that the business is housed in a New England-style house with a sloping back roof. While it is located in a 1800s-era building, the "saltbox" in its name actually refers to its method of curing more than 15 varieties of bacon, one of the specialties of the establishment at 6152 Barclay Road in Sodus, the former home to the Heluva Good! Country Store. The deli/restaurant is a dream fulfilled for the husband-and-wife team of James and Sara Wheaton. The pair enjoyed spending time together in the kitchen and started cooking for large events such as her sister's wedding. With supporters encouraging them to take their cuisine to the next level, they hunted for a place to house a restaurant for more than a year. Finally, the building off Route 104 struck a chord. The eatery serves as both deli and restaurant. Cured and smoked meats, such as bacon, smoked turkey, pastrami and pork loin, can be ordered on their own from the counter. Bacon comes in 15 flavors including apple bourbon, garlic, maple and horseradish. My wife and I recently stopped into the Saltbox on a whim while in the area, after passing the sign for them many times in between trips to Rochester. Small building, and there were already a couple customers there at right around noon on a Saturday. You order at the counter, then sit at one of the 6-8 tables they have in the nicely renovated building, and they bring you your food. They have daily specials, and this days were burnt ends. We both ordered sandwiches - my wife ordered the "On Top of Old Smokey", a sandwich with smoked cheesy meatballs on a sub roll, with a spicy tomato sauce and provolone, served with chips, and I went with the Steakhouse Sandwich, a sandwich filled with brisket, bacon, spicy pickles, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion on a roll, and I swapped out the chips for a side of bacon mac and cheese for an upcharge. We also got a 1/4 lb of the burnt ends to try. The dining area filled up quickly, but our food was brought pretty quickly. We really enjoyed our sandwiches, especially the meatballs which had a great flavor. The mac and cheese was bland, but I have yet to find good mac and cheese at a restaurant in CNY. But the star were the burnt ends - absolutely bursting with flavor, straight up meat candy. Wife and I could've made a meal just outta those. The price is comparable to other BBQ places. The service was fine - employees weren't exactly enthused to be there. No one was rude or anything, but we almost got the feeling we were being bothersome to them, but could've been an off day. We would definitely go back to try other stuff, or just for them burnt ends. read more

Stopping in right at opening, we were greeted by kind staff members. We wanted to try everything, so we put in an order for brisket, pulled pork, bacon, and kielbasa. Alongside the meats, we wanted to try their sides as well which consisted of mac and cheese, baked beans, corn bread, cole slaw and salt potatoes. For the brisket which we looked forward to the most, we found these to be drier than we would have liked. Paired with sauce, they were just okay. For the pulled pork, we found this to be phenomenal. Smoky and delicious all on its own. Definitely a highlight for us. For the bacon, we ordered 3 different kinds, and we found the flavors didn't really shine through. Although generously thick cut and cooked perfectly. The kielbasa was a bit of a letdown. We found these to be on the dry side, but the flavors were okay. For the sides, the mac and cheese we found the pasta to be a bit overcooked and overall, on the bland side. The baked beans tasted great, no complaints there. The corn bread wasn't anything special and neither were the salt potatoes. Although we did enjoy the salt potatoes and found they were exactly how they ought to be. The cole slaw was also on the bland side and tasted more of the fridge than any flavor. We've heard good things about their smoked wings which we had to try before leaving. We ordered a 5-piece with their spicy Asian sauce. The wings were delicious, the smokiness flavor penetrated throughout the entire wing, but the sauce was very salty which took away from the natural delicious taste of the smoked wings. Overall, a good experience which some seasoning issues but would revisit if we were back in the area. read more

I had no idea this place existed until I won a gift card in a Pines of Peace charity raffle. The pulled pork had no fat, was plentiful and, while they supply sauce on the side, it is so flavorful it doesn't need any. The mac and cheese was delicious. My friend had the blt and said it was the best she ever had. We got a pound of their regular bacon to go. It had a wonderful flavor and almost melted in my mouth. We're going back this week for more bacon and I can't wait to try the brisket. All of the employees were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this hidden little gem! read more

We stopped on a rainy Saturday and had the best meal I've had in awhile! Great little place with atmosphere to sit and talk with friends. There was a unique selection of about 5 beers and cider. You order at the counter and everything is brought to the table. The servers were friendly and efficient. We ordered a BLT (with thick in house bacon) , pulled pork, brisket and a BLT salad. The soup of the day was kelbasah corn chowder which was so yummy. Everything was hot, homemade and delicious. Prices were affordable. Well worth the drive from Fairport. The Saltbox Smokehouse is just the kind of place you hope to stumble on. Fantastic food, cozy & friendly environment and beer on tap. We have been here two times now while staying at Sodus Point, once for breakfast and most recently for dinner. It's counter service- you order and pay up front and your meal in brought out quickly. The breakfast was solid- I remembered it needed a touch of salt but that is easily remedied. Dinner last night was fantastic both the meat and sides are terrific. The brisket was the best I've had so far in NY- no sauce needed. The salt potatoes and Mac and cheese both shined. The chocolate chip cookies are a must try. There are some weekend specials like ribs and prime rib in addition to the regular menu. They serve the lunch and dinner menu starting at 4. The staff is awesome. read more

Overall very good food!! My favorite thing we got was the baked beans (yum!!!). My husband loved his whole meal (pulled pork sandwich and sides). My salad and mac and cheese were both pretty good, but the brisket and mac and cheese were a little more dry than I typically prefer. Everything tasted great though. The staff was very nice and they had a bunch of picnic tables set up outside which was perfect for a sunny afternoon. We will definitely go back next time we're in the area. read more

Top notch barbecue and a store to boot. I was fortunate enough to get to try their baby back ribs. Typically they aren't on the menu, you have to call and find out what it is that day. As advice, they run out fast, so you can call and reserve early on in the day. I called at 2pm and reserved a rack of ribs for 630 (they were almost sold out by 2pm!). Amazingly when we showed up everything was ready. I am a rib snob but these were incredible. They had sooo much meat it was like a brisket (which they also have), just look at the photo! My husband and I were traveling west toward Rochester. We stopped at The Saltbox Smokehouse near Sodus, NewYork. I had the Knucklehead- pulled smoked pork. It was amazing. The bun was soft but didn't get gummy and the pulled pork was better than my favorite place back home. They provided several choices of homemade sauce. I chose the dilly beans for a yuside (I was thinking some kind of baked beans). They were actually pickled green beans. Someone who likes pickles would probably love them. Unfortunately I don't like pickled things. My husband had the smoked meatball sandwich and really liked it also. To top it off we got a chocolate chip cookie as large as a grapefruit - yum! Stopped here for a sandwich at the end of our road trip. the 2 young guys working were super lovely and patient. they made our sandwiches with such tender loving care! It took a little longer than a regular deli but it was well worth it. My friend got turkey and i had chicken salad. Both meats were moist and deliciously smoked and so fresh tasting. We also picked up some bacon to take back to our rental. That was an excellent decision bc the bacon was out of this world. We especially loved the apple bourbon bacon. YUM! The guy excitedly told us he makes many more flavors and they change all the time. would love to come here again if im ever in the area. This was my first time eating here. My husband and I both got the special boneless rib sandwich. The sides were delicious- mac and cheese and coleslaw but every single bite of my sandwich had shards of bone it it /small ones and Big ones. My husband got no bones at all. In general all barbecue is good barbecue, but some is better than others. This bbq isn't bad, but it is unremarkable. I ordered the barbecue brisket sandwich and wasn't very impressed. The service was good and fast, but the brisket didn't really have a smoky flavor and was rather bland. The sandwich came in a roll that was basically a soft sandwich roll you'd find in a bag on any grocery store shelf; soft and flavorless. I came to The Saltbox yesterday (8/17/18) with my boyfriend for breakfast but I can't wait to come back for lunch and dinner! The young lady who took our order was very friendly and helpful. Our food was served by owner and and pit-master James which was a pleasant surprise! We both got the Smokehouse Skillet and a cup of coffee - wow, were we pleased. It was pretty silent between the two of us because we were both focused on scarfing down this delicious meal! The best part was biting into the little chunks of bacon that packed a powerful flavor punch. The sausage was perfectly spicy and delicious, too. We bought some meat to take home with us: smoked kielbasa and their apple bourbon bacon. Doesn't look like much from outside, but the inside has a nice, small, quiet eat in area. I have gotten takeout from here multiple times, but this is my first time eating in. The food is always great. I enjoy the brisket and pulled pork the best out of the things I have tried so far, but look forward to trying a few other things on their menu. Catering! My wife and I had lunch at the Saltbox earlier this summer; I had a pulled pork sandwich and she had the Chef's salad with Turkey - both were excellent! We needed to have a family/friends get-together catered and worked with Sara, one of the owners, to put together our menu. Based on our lunch experience, went with both the Pulled Pork and the Chef's Salad with Turkey for main dishes. Sara suggested the Caprise Corn Salad for a light side. Planning - We made an appointment and stopped by in-person. Sara was super patient with us and really nailed the right amount of food for our guest count (we were planning for ~20). Sure, we had some left over, but no one had to worry about how much they were taking on their first plate (or second plate, for most). The Pick-up - I arrived within 1 minute of our scheduled time (during the Saturday lunch hour) and everything was ready and being marched out of the kitchen and loaded in to my car. I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. All the food was packaged well, including the dressing for the salads and the BBQ sauces. They provide squeeze bottles for all, which was a great idea and keeps everything neat. Most BBQ places give you bottles with screw caps and plastic containers with spoons - both are messy. Simple touch, yes, but the squirt bottles are perfect. The food - alright, let's get the "meat" of the review. Chef's Salad - it looked like a piece of art. Everything was arranged perfectly. Mixed greens, cherry tomatoes and cucumber slices. Sara keeps the red onions in the center in a separate container, to not overpower the flavor for those who would like to do without. We chose the Lemon Vinaigrette and the Creamy Basil dressings, both of which Sara makes and are very good. Now, the main reason to get the salad is so that you can add the turkey! The Saltbox brines and smokes their own turkey - and it's awesome. For our event, they provided lots of turkey in a separate container, so people could add what they wanted. Meat lovers will be impressed by the turkey-to-salad ratio. Several folks went back for seconds and grabbed a pile of turkey solo, or made a turkey sandwich. Pulled Pork - Excellent! Moist and tender, but not sitting in a bunch of juice at the bottom of the pan. They include some "bark", like you should, but not a single piece that was hard and dry. I hate biting in to a pulled pork sandwich and hitting one of those inedible pieces. The flavor was great, even without the sauces, but I recommend also using some sauce:) We had the traditional, sweet heat and Carolina sauces - all were excellent. Caprise Corn Salad - Corn, tomatoes, cilantro and fresh mozzarella, tossed with another light vinaigrette made by Sara. This was an awesome addition for a lighter dish that could hold its own when paired with some of the more powerful BBQ flavors. This was a big hit and some of us upped the ante with a little heat by mixing in a bit of the Carolina BBQ sauce. Our guests went out of their way to complement the food and everyone had plenty to eat. We would definitely recommend them for catering and will be back in-person for breakfast, lunch or dinner. read more

Walked in on July 4 at about 930 am. They weren't totally ready for us, but did a good job attending to us. We came to grab some sandwiches to go to beach. We wound up getting 2 slabs of applewood bacon $1 each, and my husband claimed they were SO GOOD and fresh. They used gloves which is always a bonus. Clean. Happened to be driving by and craving bbq, this quaint little spot seemed to fit the bill and fulfill my cravings so we circled back and tried it out. I ordered the brisket meal with beans and corn bread along with a meat only portion of pulled pork. The brisket was a little dry, the bark on it was super flavorful and had a decent amount of smoke, however I have def had better. The beans were great and had nice chunks of bacon in them. The corn bread was judt a muffin, not what I would expect from a good bbq joint, reminded me of a jiffy muffin, was moist but left something to be desired. The pulled pork was ok but lacking that great smokey flavor I was looking for. I tried two bbq sauces one was the sweet heat which was good and the other was the original which to me was too sweet and lacked any true definition of being great, I set that aside after a simple taste of it. read more

Unfortunately, the meat fit well within the confines of the hamburger bun - no napkin required; Mac & Cheese was tasteless, nothing special about the Coleslaw. Definitely not worth nearly $14. My husband and I are self proclaimed bbq snobs and this place is the real deal. Between us we had pulled pork, brisket, mac and cheese, beans, and corn bread and everything was spot on. The mac and cheese was the best bbq mac I think I've ever had. They also seemed to be very Covid safe, everyone had masks and gloves on, and we were able to eat outside at one of the tables in front. The food is delicious. Their bacon is an absolute must try! I have family from out of town that requests Saltbox Smokehouse bacon every time they visit. My personal favorite is the smoked brisket but honestly everything we have tried from them has been delicious. Recently my family held a catered event and we chose Saltbox Smokehouse. Great catering for an event - Saltbox helped cater an event I helped host with 150 people. When delivering the food, they offered to stick around to help set up quickly - arrived on time as planned. Nice layout of deli sandwiches, salads, meatballs, and salt potatoes that people lovedddd (especially meatballs). Great communcation, great local family and business to support! First visit observations: CLEAN, CLEAN,CLEAN. Masks were worn by all. A greeting when walking in the door. Large parking lot, great outdoor seating with spacious picnic area, and a handicap entrance. All great points. Mid sized nicely appointed country ish dining area inside with non sticky seating, huge plus! So, our server, and sandwich maker was a young man approximately aged 16, to 18, and it was notable, to me, that he was enthusiastic, polite, and on the ball. Kudos to you, young man. We ordered between the two of us: Knuckle sandwich, caprease corn salad, a burnt ends sandwich, corn bread, and a garden salad. The knuckle sandwich was huge, moist and delicious, not over smoked or salty at all, delicious. The corn caprease salad was fresh, summery and light, and plentiful, the mozzarella cheese added making it really very tasty. The sauce on the side, a bit on the sweet side, but very good, if I could add anything, it may be a second of the small containers or a larger one of sauces, maybe a selection of sauces would add to the flavor spectrum as well. The burnt end sandwich, which seemed to be a special that particular day, was done really well, as rich and yummy as these are, but the sandwich was not anywhere as big as the knuckle one. The side salad was very fresh, crisp, cold and good. The corn bread was muffin style, and very good, moist, fresh and just right. The price point is what I would expect, approximately 30.00 for a meal for 2. BBQ is not a cheap take out or a sit down. But not overpriced either. I did notice reviews mentioned ribs, which were not on the nice handed out clean paper menus. so kind of confusing there, as we would definitely get them at a future visit. Perhaps add this info to the wall board, or menu? Also, would love to try a full BBQ chicken dinner, if offered. A well tended smoker is obvious here as well as the entire restaurant effort. I would love to see a second wall board with offers, specials etc. on the dining room side also, as well as the counter, as customers can take their time to put together their order ideas while other are at the counter. Drinks are cooler kept and the usual, approximately 2.20 a bottle. very cold, did not see straws, but Covid, you know Great place for quality, clean and very tasty BBQ offerings, I didn't see the deli offerings inside, but would try them at a further visit.
