If I was only rating the building, aesthetics, layout, and ambiance of "The San Anselmo Coffee Roastery", this place would probably eclipse most of the competition in the Bay Area. But the main purpose when visiting a place like this is to taste their coffee and bakery selections. Located directly at the corner of San Anselmo Ave. and Tamalpais Ave. in the heart of downtown San Anselmo, this place has been around dating back to 1979. Considering it has survived several decades, this place must be doing something right. Therefore, yours truly Donovan H. had to check this place out for himself. As I mentioned, this inside of this place is quite impressive in just about every way possible. The presentation of whole coffee beans in large coffee sacks really showcases just how detail-oriented this place is. There is also a hand-carved mirror, a coffee grinder (that looks like it is out of the 1940's), and some really awesome looking wall art. Finally, there is an abundance of indoor and outdoor seating; perfect for enjoying that cup of coffee on a crisp Marin County morning. I came here during the afternoon of Saturday 7/15/2023 at around 4:25pm. Since I already had my coffee fix earlier in the day, I decided to go with their "Green Blend" smoothie (for about $7.50 + tax). This had a mix of spinach, mangos, bananas, pineapples, and orange juice. The good news is that they were very quick; after I placed my order, they had it ready in less than a minute. The not-so good news is that this thing was overly sweet. Think of a Jamba Juice smoothie; those are loaded with sugar. Well this thing was even sweeter than one of those. As many other Yelpers have mentioned that the coffee is bland and not that good. Well this smoothie was only a 3 out of 10 for me. The service also leaves a lot to be desired as many of the employees that were working behind the counter seemed to be more focus looking at their phones than actually helping the customers. I actually had a get an employees attention just to ask for a straw. Overall, "The San Anselmo Coffee Roastery" is just an okay place. Some of the negatives is that they are quite pricey, service is just average, and drinks are just okay for me. With that said and done, I am giving them a 3-star rating. read more

Highly recommend this local spot for a coffee or tea. They have smoothies and plenty of treats as well. I tried the Mexican mocha and we also got the tropical smoothie along with a raspberry coconut bar! Definitely worth checking out and enjoying the ambiance whether inside or out! read more

San Anselmo is a beautiful, but sleepy town. My mother and I took a trip down and had a hard time finding something open for lunch. We were so lucky to stumble upon this spot on the corner - a cute coffee joint is always a great option! Walking in immediately immerses you in coffee culture. There are bean bags (the coffee kind), wooden furniture and an endless menu to choose from. You can tell the crew truly cares about nurturing the flavors. I took my cup to the outside seating and enjoyed our beautiful California sun! Definitely added to my coffee landmarks! read more

On a Sunday morning, I stopped by to grab a cup of cappuccino paired with pastry. The interior seemed inviting having both indoor and outdoor seating, strange drawings on the walls and nice decor. The variety of pastry is pretty good, and you can order anything from coffee to smoothies as a drink. My usual choice is cappuccino, and this time I ordered the same. The drink came with over an inch of foam on top of what tasted like over-roasted coffee, probably not as bad as Starbucks, but really not that great. Their pecan pastry was, on the other hand, quite large and delicious. I enjoyed the atmosphere with people reading a book or a newspaper, studying or just looking out onto the street. Peaceful... I came back later that day and got a smoothie. That was a bit of a disappointment as well. While the flavor was pretty good (Tropical smoothie), the consistency seemed a bit too thick (trying to sip it through the straw was close to moderate breathing exercise!). I did appreciate the paper "green" straws - great attempt to sustainability and environment protection! Overall, I would rate it a bit better than a chain store, but some improvement has to be made on how they make their coffees/other drinks. read more

Good: seating area is nice, with free wifi and plugs if you are trying to get some work done and want to enjoy the open air. Not so good: coffee is weak, food is not the best and overpriced, staff has been rude to me multiple times, music is very loud. I personally prefer Marin Coffee Roasters up the street or even Fairfax Java Hut. However, this place does make a nice spot to sit with one's laptop. read more

My first visit was on Thursday, Feburary 28th at 3:30pm It looked like a very cute coffee shop. I went in there is two younger gentleman working. I ordered a grilled cheese. They are very polite. Unfortunately, the grilled cheese was disgusting. I couldn't eat it. It was tasteless and hard as a rock. Monday, March 3rd st 3:25pm This was my second visit to this coffee shop. I came into the coffee shop to give it one more try. When I walked in, there was one of the same younger gentleman that I saw on Thursday and there is a younger, female, heavyset Hispanic lady that took my order. She was very upset that it interrupted her conversation with her male co-worker. I asked her if she had a coffe cake without blueberries. She said no and gave me no other suggestions. I ordered a vanilla latte. She had trouble making it and it overflowed. She gave it to me that way. I tried it. I asked her, what kind of coffee this was? She said, with a hateful attitude, it was a vanilla latte. It tasted so disgusting I put it on the counter and left. I'm not sure why customer service doesn't matter anymore. I've gone into several places and the people that work there are literal upset that someone interrupts them to order. She does not have to give me an attitude. She works behind the counter she could be friendly. So disappointing. read more

I have been coming here since i was probably a toddler. I absolutely love this place. They always have wonderful staff there, (baristas, cooks, cashiers, and Tim of course).*Shoutout to the cutest barista Emilia!* This place is the perfect place to go if you're looking for a community coffee shop where you can always strike up a good conversation or get a perfect oat milk latte. Their food is a staple too, (ancho breakfast burrito, tomato basil soup, and their veggie burgers are my go to's!). I'm a Amazon delivery driver. The older Spanish lady was nice enough to let me use the restrooms on my lunch, but couldn't give me a cup of ice in this summer heat. I hope in and out this van over 100 times in over 100 degree weather and she couldn't give me a cup of ice without paying for a cup. Please get some cheap disposable cups. I miss my tea joint, but I'm thrilled there's a decent coffee place to fill the vacancy. They really made it a welcoming, colorful hangout with outdoor seating & indoor alike. It's been a week since my last confession & it occurred here. I don't drink coffee, but they made a mean chai latte. Their pastries are fresh & tasty & I make a great frittata, but the one I had here knocked off my socks. It had artichokes & tomatoes & so much flavor, I've been thinking about it all week long. Quite cool place on the corner.. wish the al fresco got more sun, given as many outdoor tables as there were! Noted the free wifi avail. here... seems to offer a lot here, in the way of food, various roasts and their flavors. Coffee wasn't bad at all, and neither was the Italian soda ordered. Lots and lots of pastries on the menu (an octogenarian came to the cashier to state that it's the v best choc croissant he's ever tasted), salads, bars, cookies... This review is based off of one drink and one experience! I came here to wait for my friends that went to the spa across the way. And I loved it! it was love at first sight when I ordered the stickybun latte! I LOVE sticky buns and was always complaining that they're not as accessible and poof, The San Anselmo Coffee Roastery understood me clearly. I asked to drink it there and I had to upgrade it in order to do that but I'm really not complaining; I did ask that it was topped with whipped creme but the guy forgot... BUT I was ok with the foam and sipping on it at their outdoor seating when the employee comes over and apologizes, takes my drink, adds the whip, and brings it back! That was sweet! Normally, at any other coffee place I'd go to, they would really just say oops and shrug it off but the customer service was great :) So moral is, 1. Order Stickybun Latte 2. Take a seat outside 3. I like the old garage door that opens up to the street. Reminds me of the open air shop I used to go to in my hometown. Menu is average coffee shop fair and tasty. Here are the cons: - Owners want you to order something every 20 minutes if you are on a laptop. - When buying a coffee refill to support the store, they charge full price. They don't even give a discount for bringing the cup back to the counter! If I am rolling through to get a quick bite, this is a good spot. One of my favorite cafes. Great location. Great outdoor seating. Kind staff (with almost zero turnover). Strong Internet. However, I have three suggestions for improvement: 1. When a customer pays by credit/debit card, there is no way to tip the staff. They deserve to be tipped. This is simply unconscionable. It is unfair to the staff and uncomfortable for the customers. Welcome to the 21st century, get Square (https://squareup.com). It takes 15 minutes to setup. No paper receipts. You use an iPad mounted on a rotating stand. 2. Improve the coffee. We're on the Third Wave of coffee now in the rest of the world. This place is still on the Second Wave and roasts the heck out of the beans. It's not the baristas. It is the bean. Visit Taylor Maid in San Rafael for much better coffee. 3. Get rid of that giant roaster and all the burlap bags of beans sitting around. More tables in a better laid out arrangement would be way more interesting. The roaster and beans no longer are a cutting edge design elements. Why remind people that the coffee style is 20 years old? Why take up all that space where people could sit? I've been going to the San Anselmo Coffee Roastery pretty much since they opened and I have to say that I'm not coming back. They have the best location with great outdoor sitting but their service couldn't be less personal and actually rude. I would go almost everyday for the same drink and I came with a friend, who wanted a small ice latte, guess what? the process was complicated enough that he wanted to sell me two large drinks and when I corrected the order, he even said that I just wanted it cheaper and didn't want to pay for the taxes, since it wasn't to go...Can you believe it? I go there about 3-4 times a week and always pay the taxes for drinking it there and even buy food and snacks. Anyways, I was a regular customer treated with very little respect. I rather go to another coffee shop down the street where you get what you order, even with a smile and great attitude. read more

I always enjoy passing up Starbucks (and Peet's to a lesser degree) if I can find a locally-run coffee house. Dunno, I just like the idea of the shop owner being on hand so I can get the story on where the coffee comes from, and also, to have the boss handy to hear all my little bitchy complaints. Outdoor seating is right on the sidewalk where you can watch all the Caucasian families tool by on mountain bikes. This is a town where no one ever seems to go to work, and it's fun to kick back and imagine I'm one of those peeps - for an hour at least. New, yet familiar, that's what I think about the new San Anselmo Coffee Roastery. Wow, the impressive paintings on the interior greet you as you walk in. The Roaster is right in the middle of the room, making it fun to view. The staff looks strikingly similar to those in Fairfax. I really like the setting. It's the Fairfax roastery on steriods (or coffee). The seats and tables are new and there are plenty of plugs for complimentary internet. The charming table remind me of being in shop in Paris. Great location, very clean, plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. The benches outside are friendly and inviting. I can't wait for a summer day to hang out in the patio. read more

I travel a LOT, and I really should make a whole lot more reviews than I do. :) But I don't often feel inspired to. Today I feel inspired. :) I came here for the second time this morning and ordered a vanilla latte. The guy at the counter asked, "regular, or decaf?" He remembered from my last time here, when I ordered something else "decaf". I get a headache from regular coffee and completely forgot to ask for decaf, so I was super grateful for his memory. :) This place also gets points for: - Open area to get kissed by the sun while you're working (even if you're inside) - 4 hour parking on the street perpendicular if you drive down enough - Gluten free treats - Glasses if you're staying here (no wasting cups) - SUPER friendly service. - Free wifi and lots of outlets - Comfy seats Normally I end up going to Starbucks when I travel because it's just consistent. There's good lighting, wifi, outlets, I can stay as long as I want. Now that I know about this place, I'll definitely be here WAY more often. :) read more

A great place for some things and not so much for others. I definitely recommend getting the espresso beverages and teas here, but not the drip coffee. For some reason, it tastes as though the beans have been burnt...? Which isn't so bad when it comes to lattes, just not in my drip coffee please! As far as food goes, I'm not a fan of their lunch and/or savory products, but I do really enjoy their almond croissants! Their other pastries have been good as well, so you can safely count on their sweets. Great spot for meeting up with friends or grabbing something while you're out and about. However, I wouldn't recommend bringing your laptop here to work remotely for long periods of time due to two factors: noise and sunlight. The building layout amplifies everything, which is no real fault of the establishment, but there's a certain time of day where you just CAN'T escape the sunlight. So, come here to relax, chat, hang around for a bit and people watch -- not to work. Also, to tie into my point regarding noise: they often have musicians perform, and usually they sound great, but I'm pretty sure the guy they brought in the other day was using an amp. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but that seems a little 'much' for a performance for a few random people in a cafe. Ultimately, I like going here because it's local, quirky, their white mochas aren't too shabby, and I have yet to experience anything terrible that would prevent me from returning. read more

I'll start off with saying that I'm not a Marin Coffee Roastery groupie, the coffee shop located up the block from this new San Anselmo competitor. I go there occasionally when I'm in the area, but far from a regular. So when a friend suggested we meet at the new coffee spot in town I thought, why not? I'm sure it's just as good if they're that close to such a neighborhood staple. Boy was I wrong. What a letdown. I started with a latte. Pretty gross. Thin, watery, bad flavor. Next I tried a regular ol' drip, expecting something much more hearty. Again, disappointed. Watery and pretty flavorless. Come on? You're a coffee shop that strikes out twice on the same visit with two different drinks? Note to owners: when you open up a second coffee store in the backyard of a different coffee store -- make sure your product can beat, or at the very least, meet the quality of the first place. This place did not. Nice location, well laid out. But a coffee place with marginal coffee, in a county with coffee choices galore? Pass. read more

It will be interesting to see how this place progresses. It struck me as odd for the town council to allow two coffee shops to exist in the same, non-franchised, down-town area. This is not a Starbucks kinda town. The long-established, much frequented Marin Coffee Roastery has a large and loyal customer base. The San Anselmo Coffee Roastery seems to have acquired a very similar look and feel to the Marin Coffee Roastery. Not sure if that is intentional, or just a duplication of their location up the road in Fairfax. I had to go and investigate. What I found was a staff that was still getting their rhythm, a female member of staff standing at the cash register, talking on the phone, ignoring people wanting to place orders, a so-so atmosphere, and nothing hugely superior about the products being offered. Certainly a more successful business proposition than the previous occupant of this space, and time will tell if they capture business from the more established coffee shop which is a 1 minute walk away. But for now, at least, I'm sticking with my known quantity. read more

The most expensive soy cappuccino in Marin! $4.36. Good Earth charges $2.98 for the same thing, and believe me, Good Earth is not known for how inexpensive it is. Most cafes charge around $3.50 for a soy capp. And as others have said, the coffee ain't that great. The outdoor area is nice and the indoor area has plenty of outlets for study hall on computers. read more
