Hot sausage sandwich delicious, meaty treat at the Tobay car show. Packed with onions and peppers, juicy crispy.

Cousins Maine Lobster recently rolled into Forest Commons in Staten Island, and I finally had the…read morechance to see if the Shark Tank hype was real. As someone who is permanently avoiding corporate coffee in favor of supporting small businesses, I was more than ready for a local food truck pilgrimage. The Culinary Reality Check: Maine vs. My Expectations. I went in with one goal: the Connecticut Roll. For anyone wondering, yes, I am the rare foodie who is actually allergic to mayo, making this the only safe harbor for me. The Lobster: Scrumptious, soft, and undeniably fresh. Even though it arrived "bone dry" (mine was definitely missing the signature butter drizzle), the quality of the meat was top-tier. The Bread: Perfectly soft and fresh. However, since it lacked that buttery goodness, I ended up skipping most of the bun to just savor the lobster. The Portion: Let's talk about that $30+ price tag. I opened my small box to find a bun that was... well, let's just say it wasn't exactly a cruise ship buffet portion. It's a respectable sandwich, but definitely more of a "special occasion" snack than a full-on meal. The Tater Tot Engineering Project: Now, while the lobster was the intended star, the tater tots absolutely stole the show. When I saw the large box, my brain immediately assumed it was for the roll. Nope. It was a literal mountain of tots. They were "Perfectly fried and crisp." Zero grease (a miracle for food truck fare). Plentiful enough that I "engineered" two additional meals out of them over the next 48 hours. Even on day three, these tots were still delicious and crispy. I basically had a three-day tater tot residency in my own kitchen. The Verdict: Insight for Fellow Foodies. If you're headed to the Cousins Maine Lobster truck, go for the taste and the freshness--it truly is some of the best-tasting lobster around. Just be aware that you are paying "NYC-on-wheels" prices for smaller portions. My Pro Tip: Don't let your expectations fail you like mine did. It's a food truck, not a seated restaurant. Enjoy the lobster for the delicacy it is, but prepare to have enough tater tots (if you buy these) to feed a small village (or just yourself for the next three days). Do you think the "butter-less" Connecticut roll was a one-time fluke, or should I explicitly ask for extra "liquid gold" next time? Let me know. :-)
