love this gym! It's close to my house and has a cozy, homey vibe you can't get at big chains like Planet Fitness. They offer free classes, personal training, and I never have to wait for equipment. While I mostly stick to cardio, I've also started exploring the weights. The perks are amazing--I love hitting the sauna in the locker room post-workout. Pros: As someone living on Queen Anne, the location is incredibly convenient for me, and I love the great selection of classes. The Body Pump classes--especially Rachel's--are fantastic and definitely a highlight of my workouts. Cons: On the downside, the cardio machines are definitely outdated and need an upgrade. The women's locker room feels quite dingy, and standard supplies like toilet paper are rarely refilled promptly. It really feels like management doesn't prioritize maintaining the club; for instance, the lights in the women's locker room were completely out for days, leaving us with just a few dim emergency bulbs. read more

This very flexible fitness centre offers an excellent member experience and is much more than a run-of-the-mill gym, creating a welcoming, completely non-threatening atmosphere. I've been coming to Seattle Gym for years. It's a great community, and the staff is friendly and helpful. The location is fantastic, and it's a very large gym with a huge diversity of equipment. Decent gym. Old, could use some new equipment. What I'd really like to point out is that I've been coming here for 3 months and today (Sunday) an older gentleman who claims to "be the boss here" refused to give me two towels for a sauna and shower post/workout. When I asked him why he wouldn't give me a second towel, he said that he's the boss here and that those are the rules (he gave me the second towel when I returned to ask him specifically why he wouldn't give me a second one). Keep in mind, this isn't posted anywhere (at least not conspicuously) and I have never been refused a second towel by any of the other employees. He impolitely told me to bring my own next time if I wanted to dry off. If you're the boss and this is your business (whoever you are), post a rule, enforce that policy across your business, and please for the sake of the next person treat them with some respect and customer service. If anything, you could have asked if I've been receiving two towels in the past (otherwise why would I be asking). You were condescending and your need to tell me that "you're the boss here", tells me and others everything they need to know when dealing with you. Props to Jessie and Jeff there though. They are cool dudes and have always treated me with respect and kindness whenever I'd go in to grab a workout. read more

Beware! Within a week of joining, I discovered this gym not only could care less about mask mandates and the safety of members, but also has staff so poorly trained that they think it's perfectly acceptable to tell a member (aka paying customer) to handle COVID concerns themselves and the company doesn't care to be involved. I contacted the manager several times and cancelled my membership very clearly - again, this was at the very start of membership enrollment. Come to find out, they've happily collected money for three months now. I completely understand many businesses have done their best during COVID to figure it out, keep customers as safe as they can, and make sure their staff is paying attention to things like mandates. This business is absolutely doing the opposite. It's clear management doesn't believe COVID is real, and that's pretty scary! read more

I was a member of this gym for 3 years. When COVID hit, I had already prepaid for the entire year for over $500. I was only able to use the gym for only 2/12 months and then moved out of state. Despite contacting them multiple times and their promises to refund me a prorated amount ($411), they never did. For the price, this is a mediocre gym at best. For those who live in Queen Anne, the location is convenient but the location is cramped and they have suspect billing practices. I was just reminded of this as I just received their 2023 mailing list for renewing membership and want to warn anyone who is thinking about subscribing for a year up -front. read more

First, let me say, the staff here is great. That's about it. I joined this gym several years ago as it was the only option with classes. I have been highly disappointed since. The Good - staff is very nice and helpful - most members are nice The Bad - gym is dirty with old machines - cramped and crowded. - machines are packed close together - electrical wires hang from walls, across floors, across stairs - I've seen outlets hanging off the wall with exposed wires - winter gym is freezing, summer is a sauna - ceiling leaks so water puddles and buckets all around - did I say the machines are OLD as hell - showers dribble out water and take 10 minutes to warm - several cardio machines lean sideways as floor is screwed The free weight room is so packed and crammed that it becomes hard to do any kind of lifting at times. The person next to you is sometimes only a couple feet away. Benches are old and antiquated. Weights are always mixed up and missing. Also, when I went to cancel, they charged me for a months dues, which would be fine, but I had my membership on hold and the charge should have been much less. When I asked for help, they COMPLETELY IGNORED me and were suddenly unavailable to talk via phone, in person or email. I'm sure they will respond and LIE about trying to contact me or that my situation is policy (it's not). They completely ghosted me, which looks to be the MO according to Yelp reviews. I've been a member of Pro Club, Golds, Harts, 24 Hour Fitness, and Denali, and this is by far the worst gym I've ever been to. It's like your uncle Phil purchased a bunch of old crappy equipment from yard sales and set up a gym in his garage. For real, stay the heck away from this gym. It sucks. Like sucks bad. Management only wants your money and could not care less about the quality, cleanliness and condition of the gym. read more

This gym is pretty much perfect to be honest. It's a little on the smaller side but I've yet to go in and not be able to use a specific piece of equipment since I joined (unlike LA Fitness). Lots of free weights, benches, squat racks, and circuit training equipment. They have an amazing pool if you are a swimmer and the sauna is great. i love this gym! its very close to my house and has a very homey vibe to it that you cant get at a big chain gym like planet fitness or anytime fitness. They offer free classes for members, they arrange personal trainers, and i have never had an issue finding equipment i need. i mostly use the cardio machines but i have been exploring weights. I love using the sauna in the locker room to get more sweat out after a workout. I still stand by my original review. Although I now sometimes notice staff wiping down machines...but they still look dirty. This gym advertises cardio machines with individual TVs but all the ones I've tried don't have sound. I plug in my headphones and no sound comes out even if the volume is turned up all the way. The lack of good wifi upstairs is still really annoying. Especially since at one point they were advertising improved wifi. This might've been when they charged members the yearly maintenance fee. At this point I feel like they want to be able to advertise that they have lots of amenities like cardio tv's and wifi to stay competitive. But it is just marketing and they don't really care if they offer these things or not. Because if they cared, everything would work well. Also, lately I've noticed that some cardio machines need repair because they squeak or make noises. One would think the staff would test the machines regularly and keep them on a maintenance schedule. There are always 2-3 people behind the front desk. It would be great if some of them actually walked around the gym to make sure everything is working and in order. read more

As I am very myopic, so I try to set close to the instructor so I can follow better. From the start, it was obvious that a few members felt that they had "a (permanently) reserved" place in front, which they jealously guarded to the point of actually taking my mat, if I arrived there before them, and hanging it back on the mat hooks! One day three of them threw their mats down close together at the front. I hadn't realized this when I placed my own mat just behind their theirs after I had entered, as it was not clear if they had been left by members of the earlier class. I had just wanted to make it clear that I wanted to sit in the row behind. A few seconds later a member came up to me to tell me that my mat was too close to hers--even though their own mats were much closer to each other. I moved my mat. The meaning was clear: You don't belong here. Know your place. We're first. Keep a distance from 'us.' From the day I joined the class, members refused to acknowledge me. The disdain was palpable silence. Hostility to me steadily increased. Last Thursday, I made to class early and placed my mat in the first row." I went to get a two blocks. When I returned I noticed that same member's mat was placed, this time, just a few inches behind my own. I asked her, "Excuse me, would you mind moving your mat a bit further away." Furious, she shouted at me, "W--H--Y ?? [WHAT the hell are you talking about?]" I so so taken aback by her churlishness that the words "You're in my space" tumbled out of my mouth. Most people in Seattle do not behave this way in a private club. Ten minutes later she had barely moved her mat. This went way beyond annoyance ("You are sitting in my spot"): an explosion of hatred. For no other reason than my appearance. This is how racial mistrust and hate are engendered. Though born and raised in Seattle 65 years ago, I hadn't given thought to what "racial privilege" meant. That changed. I thought of all the bigoted Caucasian teachers I had had. IS THIS WHAT LIVING IN SOUTH CAROLINA IS LIKE? She could not "get it" that I wanted the same right, too, to ask her to do what she had asked of me only weeks earlier.. I have tried to be polite as possible to other members. In fact, I had asked two if I would be blocking their view if I sat diagonally in front of them. Their answers were either icy or nasty. * * * * * The treatment I received unmasks how TSG really feels about minorities like me: "We don't particularly want 'them' here. By ignoring their complaints, they'll eventually 'get it.' " A message, posted--not a review!--on yelp, likewise went without response. In 20 months there has been only one (token) minority staff person. All white instructors. In other words, their intention, I believe, is to keep the gym as white as possible. * * * * The place is as hot as hell in the summer. When I joined, I asked if they had air conditioning; I was told they had a high-tech-sounding alt system. It turned out to be large electric fans. I could forgive this and other issues, e.g., the substandard strength-building machines, which I don't use, as I go to another gym to work out. Turning a blind eye to not so subtle racism: NO. * * * * * The manager LIED to me in writing 3 times, saying (1) staff had tried to contact me ("You didn't get back to us"); (2) he had proof of this; what I got a doctored email; (3) a refund had been sent. "I can lie in your face..." (Reminds me of the blowbag who twitters things demonstrably untrue). What he wrote revealed a lack of integrity. Only after 6 days of effort was a refund processed. * * * * Lily "Rosa Parks" H. : "I don't like sitting in the back of the 'bus.'" TSG: "You are not allowed to ride the 'bus' at all now." A small coterie of bigots has lynched the sole non-white in the class, too "uppity" for their tastes. philistine Apparently, they've gotten away with barely veiled racist behavior for a long time. So used to white privilege, so unwilling to give it up. For TSG what counts is: (1) keeping them happy (& racist); (2) "fixing" the problem by driving me out, as these white women all along wanted. * * * * * My parents paid a high price. The Seattle Gym is a wonderful gym! I had just got back into fitness and was looking for a gym that was nice, in the right price range and nearby. I couldn't have been more happy with my find. The staff is always friendly and willing to answer any questions. Unfortunately I recently moved to a new neighborhood and had to end my membership. I looked all around Seattle for a place in the same price range/size...which apparently doesn't exist! The women's locker room was always clean and the sauna was such an after work out treat. I highly recommend The Seattle Gym to anyone looking to make a change! So many gyms can be so intimidating, but the Seattle Gym takes it back to basics and has a true sense of community. I welcomed that message with disdain thinking I was finally out of this disgusting gym and its greedy practices, but they still managed to keep charging me for 10 months after they closed and just transferred me to the other location against my will. Right now (January) the Seattle Gym (Powered by Prorobics) is running their annual membership drive. If you're thinking of joining this gym BEWARE. My story leaves me thinking there are larger financial issues with the gym and if you join now, you run the risk of closure at some point soon for the Queen Anne location. I was a long-time annual member at the Laurelhurst location, which closed after May, 2018. They promised a pro-rated refund to annual members. My story is common; I filed the refund paperwork in June and have not heard from the Gym owner despite multiple emails, to multiple email addresses, and a fruitless visit to their Queen Anne location. Zero response from the owner on my $230 is a bad sign. As for my time as a gym member, the Laurelhurst location was convenient for me. I felt like I received what I paid for, not clean enough to shower regularly there but passable facility with a friendly core membership. read more

This rating is for the Steps Challenge classes and Hi-Lo Dance class. I gave up looking for Steps and Hi-Lo classes when I was living in New York, no one teaches it but it was such a nice surprise when I found them in The Seattle Gym. So far I have tried the Monday and Wednesday evening class with Kari and Saturday morning class with Jana, and I absolutely love the classes. It's fun, challenging and never boring. The class room is very big and you have lots of space to move. This is a very friendly gym, it has a lot of history and the place is kept very well and clean. I don't use any of the equipment, so I can't rate on that. read more

The only reason I'm a member here is the location. The gym itself seems like something out of the show "Hoarders." The place is cramped and filled to the gills with a mish-mash of old equipment. The locker rooms are mustier than your school gym's. At least there are some nooks and crannies to stretch ikn and a few classes. But the owners really need to rethink the layout, make some room and most of all step into the 21st century by investing in some new machines, TVs and redo the locker rooms. read more

aaahhhhhhhh My phone call to the gym itself after seeing a 5 star review for the Laurelhurst location with their new name gave me a staff who is not trained in customer service, welcoming, positivity or knowledge of the gym. It's about positivity, treatng people well so they want to come in. When it isn't they don't. There are a lot of good gyms in the city. And lots of people who are courteous on the phone who need jobs. read more

OK. Let me preface this review by stating I teach physical fitness for a living, so I'm pretty picky when I step into a group exercise class. I've signed up for the Pro-Robics $99 summer special for four years in a row, because I'm happy with (most of) the class selection and instruction. Kari Anderson, owner/director/fitness goddess, is an outstanding group exercise teacher, always providing challenging choreography and excellent cues. Maybe that's why she is so popular. And rich. Another gem of an instructor is Katherine, who teaches a "Step Challenge" class on Saturday mornings. While I prefer cardio workouts, I also occasionally go to "Body Pump" classes because they are like green beans, good for me. Body Pump is a resistance training workout, performed to music. Very repetitive and a little boring, but I just attended Lisa's class tonight--and she was very good. There are a couple instructors whose classes I prefer not to attend. I once was told by a Body Pump instructor to keep a wider grip on my chest presses because otherwise I was working my ribs. Instead of suggesting she re-read some of her fitness training textbooks, I explained that my narrower grip was due to shoulder instability. She seemed ok with that answer and moved on. Another instructor doesn't hear the beat of the music very well, which makes following her choreography a rather interesting experience. There are a variety of resistance machines and free weights on the first floor of Pro-Robics, though I have never seen the place too packed, which is nice. The second floor seems to have an ample number of cardio machines, as I've never seen people waiting to use them. The only drawback is the front desk staff. Maybe I catch them on their "off" days, or maybe I'm too hyper about customer service, but rarely do they greet me when I arrive or say good-bye when I leave. Price-wise, I can't beat the summer deal. As long as Kari and Katherine remain, I'll keep returning to Pro-Robics every June. UPDATE 8/2007: The front desk staff this summer have been great. Every time I walk through the door, someone is present to greet me, as if I'm a real customer. Kari, Katherine and Lisa are still teaching, so I'm still a happy camper. read more
