The employee was very nice and explained of all of their authentic desserts to me. The quesito was so unique with the delicious cream cheese in the middle. The coffee bar has a lot of tasty offerings but the book selection is pretty limited and not the broadest selection but I'm sure for those it's aimed at it excels. Then there are places you find almost by accident. A Little Gelato and Bakery and The Olive Wagon is the latter. It is tucked behind the businesses near Allendown Drive in South Durham, in the kind of location where you could pass within a few hundred feet of it for years and never know it was there. That would be a mistake. Inside, a husband-and-wife team with four children is quietly making some of the best desserts I have tasted in Durham. Start with the tiramisu. The ladyfingers are made in-house. The cocoa is properly bitter, the sweetness restrained. Nothing is trying too hard. The chocolate mousse has the same quality: dark, smooth, deeply chocolate, and remarkably close to what I remember eating in Europe. Then there is the gelato. A customer recently walked in with two pounds of fresh peaches. About 30 minutes later, those peaches--along with little more than water and sugar--had become peach gelato. That tells you almost everything you need to know about the place: good ingredients, proper equipment, and people who understand that sometimes the less you interfere with food, the better it tastes. My daughter has already found her favorite: the jam cookies. We brought home the carrot cake, so judgment on that will have to wait. Perhaps most surprising are the prices. A pint of house-made gelato is about $16. Many pastries are around $6, some small treats closer to $3, and generous cake slices around $9. In an era when an ordinary dessert can cost nearly as much, this feels almost stubbornly reasonable. The owners also understand food sensitivities, including gluten, because those concerns exist within their own family. There is a seriousness about ingredients here that doesn't feel fashionable or performative. It feels personal. Durham has plenty of places with better addresses, bigger signs and considerably more buzz. This little shop doesn't need any of that. You just have to find it. And once you do, order the tiramisu.
